Of all the places I've been for burgers(and there are hundreds) this was my biggest surprise, first of all I was under the impression that it was an upscale establishment which means I would have to get dressed up lol then when I arrived I was thrilled to find out its very laid back almost fast food like....I ordered the Kobe beef burger and I liked the idea that the fries came separate(the burger tour can add pounds quick)so this time I skipped the fries
Bun--awesome with an onion flavor
Meat-- nicely seasoned
Toppings--excellent with many to choose from
I thought this was just as good if not better than most of the upscale restaurant lunch time burgers in center city -

I have eaten some truly awful burgers in my time, but this place makes you forget all about them. I like my burgers the way they were invented, nothing fancy added, so I can taste the burger. This burger is awesome! And, if you like frills, a wide variety of toppings is available.
Everyone raves about the truffle fries, but if you are a purist like me, the just plain fries are also terrific.
When you have the burger urge, 500 is THE PLACE. -

I'm definitely going to regret signing a lease for an apartment around the corner from 500 Degrees...this place is ridiculously addictive and I somehow find mind myself here way more than I should.
The burgers are really good and the truffle fries are omgamazinggg! It completely hits the spot after a long night of studying. Plus it's reasonably priced (like $11 bucks for a cheeseburger combo) and is definitely way more food than anyone should eat in one sitting (not that that ever stops me). Just note though, that it's not "fast food" per se, I usually wait abt 10-15 minutes for my food.
Also, bonus, the guys who work there are super nice and laid back and didn't judge me when I ended up there two nights in a row once. -

The beef was good, sweet potato fries were awesome.. but our hamburger buns were way too dry. I am not sure why people talk this place up so much. It is also overpriced. My 2 stars are for the fries. Perhaps you'll have a better experience than I did..

Burger: Option #4 (Burger + one topping) The meat is goood and I love mushrooms so it was a wonderful topping choice for me. I also like they let you choose your cheese, cause some places it's just American (which I don't like) so I could get like provolone or something.
Fries: Truffle fries! YUM! Lots of flavor and delicious, but a bit too salty. -

Hello, old friend.
There was a time when I was hopelessly devoted to 500. It was the first place where I learned a burger didn't have to be cooked well done. I also took my best friend, Dad, and girlfriend here on separate occasions.
The things that were great about 500 still are: the burgers come on a locally made brioche which is probably the best part of the sandwich. There are a number of topping options including my favorite, guacamole. Their flagship burger, the aptly named 500, is a duly constructed combination of real cheddar, lettuce, tomato, bacon, and their mustardy-mayo-y house sauce. The burger is juicy, but recently I've felt it lacks much needed seasoning. This, more than anything else, is why I always feel the need to order too many toppings when I come here.
The fries, though still good, have gone down in quality in recent years. They're just not as crisp as they used to be, and there just isn't enough of them per serving. It's worth addressing, too, that the admittedly delicious truffle fries are not FRIED in truffle oil, but FINISHED with truffle oil, which may be a sticking point for some folks. If you go, though, ask for the fry sauce: a peppery, garlic-y aoili of some kind which I just can't get enough of.
Although the shakes are made with Bassett's ice cream, they've never tasted thick enough to me. If you want a real Bassett's shake, go to Reading Terminal.
Overall, 500 Degrees is worth a stop if you have money to burn (10 dollars or more for a standard combo, more for shakes and deluxe toppings) and happen to be in Center City. Word of advice, though: if you want the best burger in Philly, or maybe the best burger EVER, you owe it to yourself to make the trek to Fishtown for Sketch. -

I like it. The burgers are pretty big. Combo is a ok deal - you get fries, milkshake and a burger.
I got combo 5 and wasn't impressed... until I sauced it with their BBQ sauce. That made it amazing!
Truffle fries also tasted good with the special sauce (ask for it at the counter), ketchup, and bbq sauce on tap. -
Review from Jerry T.
Yes. Contrary to those naysayers, this IS a good burger. The toppings choices are great, the burgers are well-prepared and large. I'm really a purist with burgers - preferring very basic burgers with mayo, ketchup, mustard - and here I also add bacon and jalapeno slices.
The place itself can be tight and confining . . . I'm a bit claustrophobic, so when it is full in there, I don't go in . . . and, often when I do, it gets crowded after I've ordered -, so there are a lot of "excuse me" and "oops" . . .
I'm not as big a fan of the fries - sometimes they're great, but other times they're a gooey, greasy mess. Usually, I just bypass them because I'm really here for the burger, and it IS a good one :-) -

If you are looking for a challenge in burger kingdom this is the place to go! Order the truffle fries and the black and white chocolate shake to finish it off! And enjoy the food coma that comes after this monstrous meal. :)

I used to live this burger place. I loved their fries and burgersbecause if the great quality and amount per serving. But, since then this establishment had gone downhill a bit. The burgers were still cooked well, but the fries were incredibly chewy and disgusting the last few times I went.
This place also seemed to have jacked the prices up, while also giving much less of a serving.
I used to really love this place, but I am sad to say their quality has gone down.
I did like their milkshake and I may return for one of those. -

Burgers are the true ambassadors of all things USA. They are the first thing I mention when I am asked about what I find great about this country, and I insist that they are better here than anywhere else. A good foodie city must also have good burgers, and Philadelphia does not disappoint.
We came to 500 Degrees because it is close to the Kimmel Center (Rattle was pretty awesome tonight) and because it is a place that pops up when asked about burgers in Philly. Besides, Bobby's Burger Palace was disappointing lately so we were craving for something new.
500 Degrees is surprisingly lowly ranked on Yelp, but similar to Bobby's Burger Palace I have the impression that it's actually due to its popularity. BBP has weaknesses - inconsistent burgers, occasionally horrible service and unpleasant atmosphere when it's packed. 500 Degrees also has its fair share of weaknesses. I thought their sauces was rather bad (especially the ketchup!) and while I appreciate their open kitchen, I didn't really want to see how their fries are taken out of the freezer instead of being freshly cut. On the other hand, their burger totally makes up for it. We got a "500" and a classic with guacamole, both medium rare, along with truffle fries and sweet potato fries. The burgers were cooked exactly the way we would have expected "medium rare" to be, they were juicy and both their cheddar and provolone went well with the burger. I should also mention that I especially liked the slight sweetness of the buns.
Despite being taken out of the freezer, the truffle fries are actually well-made because they spray truffle oil at the end, keeping the fries nicely crispy. Finally, the sweet potato fries were delicious but not overwhelming.
With 12.50 for a burger, truffle fries and a fountain drink, I thought the prices were pretty good. Cheaper than Bobby's Burger Palace at least. All in all, this is a place I would enjoy to come back to, because their burgers and the big choices of toppings come at a good price. -
Review from Lily T.
The grease police will catch me this time! (Just follow the trail of saliva and dust for truffle oil-soaked prints.) I don't care if I do time on the treadmill (or most likely along Schuylkill River) for this. It was worth it. In fact, if I could go back in time, I would devour the $4 truffle fries all over again.
Although this time, I think I can skip the burger. The 500 Burger was not bad per se. However, the "special sauce" promises to add a tasty accent to the burger, which it did not deliver. In contrary, the sauce and the burger as a whole was indistinctive and forgettable. -

At 500 Degrees, I can have an awesome, gourmet, juicy cheeseburger cooked perfectly to order with fancy schmancy cheese and a side of truffle fries. It is a sinfully decadent pairing that makes me feel like I have had an over-the-top indulgence for ~ $11.00. I usually get mine to go, and enjoy it in one of the nearby parks.
They lose one star for combined factors of limited seating, crowded-ness, and occasional long waits. -

Best late night food in Center City. The burger, fries and milkshakes after a night of drinking is at an elite level that few can match for late night food. When you order fries just splurge a little and get the truffle fries, believe me truffle oil does to fries as buffalo sauce does to chicken wings, its pretty freakin good, get the 500 sauce with the fries you won't regret it.
Okay there is a disclaimer to this review. If you ate the burger for the first time when you were hammered, DO NOT go there sober, it won't bring back the feeling of ecstasy you experienced when you were a hot mess!!! -

CAme back after 1st experince 6 months ago was not good.
Had diarrhea from their milkshake.
The burgers were ok not that great. For the price had better burgers ( per my partner )
. Service left a lot to be desired apparently the cashier have no authority to change anything once ordered and rung up. I paid for and ask the cashier to keep the change as he refused to change my order bec they started cooking it.
The vegetarian burger is pukable. @ bites, first was yucks and second bite was to see if first was correct.
In the bin it went.1 Previous Review: Show all »

YES! YES! YES! These burgers and fries are legendary! Come hungry, but if it's after 2 am on the weekends, expect a really long wait! I've tried the falafel burger, their 500 (lettuce, tomato, cheddar cheese, bacon and special sauce), and their truffle fries. They do have specialty burgers, so look out for those. Their burgers are delicious and a mouthful! I like mine medium, and they did a pretty good job in making sure it was cooked perfectly. I'm pretty sure I ate those burgers in record time because I couldn't get enough! Truffle fries? I should have placed an additional order. I saw them making the fries, and they spray on the truffle oil. Is it really that easy? Note to self: Find me some truffle oil spray!
Seating can be sparse, but there are two communal tables, as well as some space along the sides for a quick bite. My pet peeve? When people don't throw their trash away. No one wants to clean up your mess! -

Overall an excellent burger place.
I first visited this place over the summer on the recommendation from a friend and returned today before going to a concert. Both times were just plain amazing!
The environment is pretty informal, and I would recommend this place as a casual get-together-with-friends restaurant, certainly not for a date.
There is pretty limited seating, with room for a grand total of about 25-30 people max (and that's after sharing the 2-3 large tables in the middle with 5-6 other people!)
Environment: 4/5
But, you don't come here for the environment - you come for the EPIC TRUFFLE FRIES!!
Truffle fries are normal fries cooked in a special truffle oil, and they taste quite different (in a good way!) from typical ones. It's difficult to describe, but there is a unique aromatic taste that comes out in each bite, and I seriously just want to sit there eating them all day after taking the first bite.
The burger, on the other hand, while pretty good, definitely isn't at the level of amazingness as the fries. I got the 500 Burger, which came with lettuce/tomato, bacon, and a special house sauce. The meat just didn't feel like it had as much flavor and chewy texture as I had expected and found at other burger joints. Also, the meat seemed a bit small relative to the size of the bun.
Burger: 3.5/5
Truffle fries: 5/5 (first time rating anything 5/5, so you know this is good!!) -

Love their burgers. I always get option #4 with guacamole in the Burger. Always so juicy! Also love their truffle fries. Perfectly cooked! This place is definitely one of my favorite Burger places in Philly.

OMG! Top 5 best burgers I have ever had in my life. Maybe I was super hungry/had the munchies but I literally was like a total fat kid here. The turkey burger was amazing and super tasty. I also have yet to stop talking about the truffle fries. SO DAMN GOOD! I will be frequenting here more often. LOVE IT!

I've made three visits to 500 Degrees and each burger was great. Cooked perfectly (and exactly to order - not an easy thing to find!), with excellent toppings - I had guacamole and raw red onion - on a fresh, soft brioche bun. It's easy to ruin a great burger with a poor bread choice, but I digress...the rolls here really let the burgers shine.
The fries (I've tried plain and spicy) are a perfect specimen of the shoestring variety, and they have Pennsylvania Dutch birch beer on tap. I'll have to go back for a milkshake sometime.
I love this place for when you get that pit-of-blackness kind of hunger after walking around Center City all day. You can usually get a seat and the food is consistently good. 500 Degrees is no frills; they do one thing and they do it right. There's nothing fancy here, just a casual atmosphere and reasonably priced fare. -

i lurve the truffle fries.
the burger itself was moist (probably because i asked them to cook it medium rare). although it was big, i couldn't stop eating it. it was delicious...i don't remember exactly the experience because my mind was in heaven mode.
must try if you're around philly. -

Yes this place is pricey, but the burgers are pretty good. You'll probably spend over 15 on a burger, truffle fries, and fountain drink. I've been here twice and I've only gotten the Humpty Dumpty burger. It's really good! Beef patty, with cheese, hash, arugula, and the fried egg just tops it for me! I do plan on trying the Turbo burger next time.
Their truffle fries are really good too so are the sweet potato fries.
Also ask to try their house and fry sauces. Both are mayo based, but the house sauce is a mild horse radish sauce, which isn't overpowering at all (trust me, i'm not a fan of horse radish, but this sauce is worth a try).. the fry sauce is more of a spicy mayo sauce.
Anyway, definitely a good burger joint and I always get a refill of the Birch beer because they have it in their fountain drinks!
I just went today, so I'm not craving it yet.. but i'll be here for my next burger crave! -

Burger & Shake was amazing. The burger was pretty huge - I got a cheeseburger which was delicious but I could barely finish it. The place is pretty small and gets packed on the weekends so you may want to get your order to-go!

I've been wanting to try this place out ever since I heard it was owned by Rouge (who is said to have the best burger in Philly). Especially my drunk self, since they are open until 3am on weekends. I managed to visit during a normal hour when LevelUp did their free lunch deal here. I eat mostly vegetarian, although I will eat meat every once in a while. I was very tempted to get a real burger here because of the smell and the offerings they had (one with bacon, a fried egg, arugula, and potato chips - amazing). That combo was a special, and the rest of the menu is pretty run of the mill hamburger cheeseburger, cheeseburger with bacon and special sauce, etc. I convinced myself to be a little healthier and get the phalafel burger.
First thing to note about this burger is that it takes a lot longer to cook than the meat burgers. Like 15 minutes long. This is kind of a pain when you are expecting to be in and out of there in under 10 minutes. Taste wise, it wasn't that great. The falafel had a strange flavor and was really hard to eat because it was so crumbly. The spicy fries I got on the side were good, but not the best I've ever had.
My other issue with this place is that it's kind of expensive for fast food. Almost all the combos are over $10. I do want to go back to try the regular burgers, since I think they deserve a shot, and I bet they would taste delicious at 2am. -

Poor cooking .... Had to return 2 falafel burgers because they weren't cooked and told by staff 'Well that's the way we cook them' which makes it ok for it to be raw???
Not overly helpful staff overall -
Review from Teri R.
I love a place that specializes. At 500 Degrees you can get a burger. And fries. Period. You can have a few different things put on your burger, or a different kind of burger, but don't go if a burger isn't gonna hit the spot for you.
The plain cheese burger was cooked perfectly, and I loved the plain fries and look forward to trying the truffle and spicy varieties. The 500 was messy and cheesy and yummy, and we both enjoyed the special sauce that was different and unexpected.
We also liked the shake -- very smooth. Not so thick you could turn it over, but we both liked that you could get it up through the straw. It was also not overly sweet or vanilla-y -- just refreshing and perfect for lunch.
Space is small with only two tables and some counters. I can imagine the place can get pretty uncomfortably full at lunch rush, but we were eating a bit early so it was just filling as we left.
no table service here -- order, grab a seat, wait for your order to be called and pick it up at the counter. Prices were good for quality of food. I am a fan. :D -
Review from Rob S.
Burgers made to order. I got "The 500," which comes with bibb lettuce, tomato, cheddar, bacon and house sauce. Only 50 cents above the classic was worth the upgrade for the bacon, if that's how you like your burger. The challah bun was perfect. I ordered my burger medium but it came medium rare. Personally, I wasn't a big fan of the house sauce and I used a healthy dose of ketchup and mustard. It wasn't a huge burger, but a good size. I tried my friend's spicy fries and the combination of spices was really good. Prices have increased $0.75 to $1.50 per burger over the opening day menu posted in the Yelp photos here (of course combo prices are higher too). It was a solid burger but I still thought $7 was a bit much.

The food in this tiny little burger shop is tasty. The burgers and fries are cooked to order in their tiny little kitchen. There is a tiny little eating area to go along with it. I am not sure what the 500 degrees stands for, but I hope it has nothing to do with the cooking temperature, because that would be insanely hot.
The service was somewhat jaded when I went around 9pm on a Thursday night. It was a long eventful day and dinner just happened later than usual. Needing something simple and filling we chose 500 degrees. I had heard they were owned by the same folks that owned Rouge on Rittenhouse, so if anything I was prepared to pay an arm and a leg for a cheeseburger... which I did. They do have nifty combos where you can get your drink and fries all-inclusive, but not much cheaper (I guess it just makes ordering easier). Getting back to the service, there isn't much else to say, except that everyone working there seemed very unenthusiastic, which was a bummer since we were Really excited to try this cool new place. Joykill.
The milkshakes are made with Bassett's ice cream (local). Plainly said, it was a poorly made milkshake. The ice cream tasted good, but the milkshake was super runny and not mixed well. There is nothing worse than a 5 dollar shake that is about 10 percent ice cream swimming in a sea of milk.
Decor was very modern, dark walls, dim lighting, intimate style setting with music pumping in the background, very clubby. They do offer duck fat fries and sweet potato fries, maybe I will try them on my next outing. -

The food here is pretty solid. The fries are certainly exceptional, but the service is fairly slow. Lastly I ordered and paid extra for mushrooms and jalapenos and received neither on my falafel burger. This is a decent lunch option if you aren't feeling too rushed. I hear the shakes are exceptional though I have never had one.

Good for a quick burger crave, went there for the first last week with 2 friends and the burgers are big and juicy! The fries are cook with duck oil and I usually don't like any oil but veggie, but those fries were cut perfectly and cooked to perfection!
I got the Jalapeno Burger, different and the jalapeno gave the burger an extra kick so it was new and delicious for me. Price: for a burger and fries I paid $13 (well worth it tho). I would definitely pay them another visit :) -

Full disclosure: I have never been here sober.
That said, as far as I'm concerned, 500 Degrees is tied with Village Whiskey for best burger in the city. I dream about that burger. Oh, and the truffle fries are a must.
The icing on this proverbial cake, though, is that they're open until 3:00 am on Friday and Saturday. Oh sweet, merciful burger gods. If the bars have closed but your night isn't over yet, and you're still hungry, goddammit, 500 Degrees is there for you. I've happily ended many a night here, and the only way it could get any better is if someone would carry me home afterwards.Listed in: Sansom St Stroll, The Hungry Night-Owl, Best Burgers

I'm a big fan of Rouge (especially for brunch), so it was only a matter of time before I made it to 500 Degrees for a burger. While I prefer the ambiance and service at Rouge, 500 Degrees is cheaper, faster, and definitely a solid option for a quick lunch or snack.
I figured if you're gonna eat a burger, you should do it right, so I went with the 500. It's their signature burger with lettuce, tomato, cheddar, bacon, and their special house sauce. The burger was a good size - a little messy, but I managed to get through it without major damage to my clothes. I liked the sauce fine but didn't think it was amazing - I'll probably skip it next time. The burger itself was good and cooked just the way i asked. I was a bit disappointed with the truffle fries. They are just not as good and truffle-y as the ones at Rouge. At first I even wondered if I'd accidentally been given regular fries, but there was a definite wafting scent of truffle oil in my bag. I'd be happy to pay a little more for some more oomph to the flavor.
The space was very crowded when I went, so I took my burger to LOVE park to enjoy in the sunshine. It was fun to watch the business dudes in suits stalking the seats and squeezing in when they found an open space while I waited for my food. They do OK for the space that they have - it would be great if they could move into a larger spot, since there's obviously plenty of demand. If you're going at a busy time (I dropped in on a Friday at prime lunch time), be aware that you'll wait for your burger and you might not get a spot to sit right away, so eating in is probably not your best bet for a 30 minute lunch break. -

Back in Philly! Didn't get a chance to try this burger joint the last time I was here.
Food (8.5/10) = Ordered the "500 burger" with the truffle fries. The meat is damn good. So good, it stands on its own without any sauce. Of course if you want to contaminate your burger with sauces, go ahead. They gave me a white sauce and a pink one. I can't remember what they were exactly. The pink one was rather salty though. The sauces were delicious though,...better than the average ketchup and mustard. All the other components of the burger were great/fresh (the bread, lettuce, mushrooms, bacon, cheese). The truffle fries were delicious. Won't say too much about the fries because it is just fries with truffle oil. It's not hard to make. They do prepare all their fries with duck fat though. Very nice.
Ambiance (7.5/10) = nice clean burger joint.
Service (7.5/10) = not much too it. Place your order, get your food and eat it.
Overall Opinion = These are quality burgers. Definitely a lot better than the average burger joint. Bobby Flay should eat at this place and take notes (see my review for Bobby's whatever burger palace). Although 500 degrees is really good, I still think the burgers at village whiskey are the best. I would visit 500 degrees again. -

LevelUp was doing a $10 promo here and who am I to pass up a free burger? I must say that even if it hadn't been for the credit, I would have paid $8.50 for the truffle burger. Crisp char on the outside, juicy inside with a hint of pink, just liked I ordered. Soft toasted bun... and let's not forget about the truffles and the cheese. Beautifully melted cheese with a kiss of salinity thanks to the truffles. Topped off with sauteed mushrooms. AND they had Pennsylvania Dutch birch beer.
I expected a long wait, but was in line and had my burger fairly quickly considering the promo. I'll definitely come back again! :) -

Meh. The truffle fries were on point.
I ordered the 500 burger. The sauce, I wasn't a big fan of. It was overly salty. I ordered the burger medium rare, and it came out medium well. Maybe they mixed it up with my friend who ordered the medium and his was kind of pink. Either way, it was dry and the sauce kind of sucked. The bread was good. The iced tea was good. The burger left me meh, especially for a $7 burger. -

This little burger spot is pretty legit! I'm a fan. Plus, its right next door to Ladder 15!!
Ok. So, we were all drunk and needed something filling before continuing on to the next bar.
My burger (classic + cheddar) was cooked to medium rare perfection. The bacon on my friend's burger was a little on the skimpy side.
The truffle fries were delicious. I wasn't sure whether to feel happy or sad when I found out they were cooked in duck fat. Ugh...no wonder they were so good. -

After reading so many positive reviews for 500 degrees I had been looking forward to trying it out.
Upon arrival, my friend and I approached the register to place our order. I'm not sure whether the guy behind the register was new or what but he seemed completely oblivious to what was going on. It was a struggle to even place an order. I realized after the fact that he put a completely different burger down than the one I ordered.
I got the 500 burger and my friend got a bacon cheeseburger. I ordered mine medium rare and it was basically raw. I am pretty aware of the difference between temperatures and the whole rare to well done scale and my burger was definitely rare. My friend ordered hers medium and it was medium rare. My bun was soggy and I couldnt eat parts of it because it was like a sponge. I also got the truffle fries and meh. Boring. The strawberry shake was good but I've had better.
The best part of the meal was the barbecue sauce.
I won't go back.
