I'm giving this place four stars because I had one five-star night (Friday, about a year ago) and one three-star night (Thursday, today). Usually "local comics" means guys who tell fart jokes who aren't funny, but this isn't the case at 50 Mason.

Go on a Thursday if you want a small, sober, local crowd so the comic will make actual jokes about you and your friends. Go on a Friday or Saturday if you want a big crowd that can keep the laughs going all night.

I won tickets off of MyBart website. I went with my friend to the improv night on Thursdays. The club is just up mason right out of the bart station. Its in the sketchy side the Powell street station. I think I saw some "questionable" transactions on my way into the Bart station after the club.

If I didn't get the tickets for free, I would have paid $10 per ticket. Not so bad. They don't have a drink min so you can go and watch with out having to down two beers or sodas when you don't feel like it.

The improv was okay. I used to be involved with the Comedy Sportz format in San Jose/ Santa Clara. I thought that the content was really raunchy compared to Comedy Sportz. The comics were really quick on their feet but when they ran out of ideas they would resort to raunchy content to get some cheap laughs. Also the format was a little disorganized.

I have to give all the comedians Kudos for going up night after night to do the show. I think its got potential.

I was not ROFLMAO at this place. Maybe i needed a few beers.

What a weird comedy club. Seems to be a one man operation.

The comics here are going to be mediocre because they aren't getting paid. Nice racket by the owner!

Why can't someone operate a comedy club in this country without being a scumbag or greedy person?

It's a small place, pretty basic, bare decoration. They serve beer and wine and soda. It starts around 8:20 with a brief introduction by the host (a pretty funny Asian female comic) and then followed by 5 comics, about 10-15 minutes each.

To be honest, I was expecting at least one to suck completely, 2-3 to be alright, and maybe another 1-2 to be actually funny. I was pleasantly surprised; every comic made me laugh a couple times. Some were better than others, but no one was really bad. (Matt Morales, of course, was great.) It's true that the routines weren't as polished as those of the more professional clubs, but still very funny.

Would I go back? Maybe... I would definitely go back if a friend was up there.

Would I recommend it? Sure, but only if you're okay  with braving the "unpleasantnesses" of the Tenderloin.

I picked this place somewhat randomly. I always see it listed in the Thurs. entertainment section in the Chronicle. It was pretty cheap, and gave us something else to do after an early dinner.
It's not in the best neighborhood, but it didn't look dangerous either.
The show didn't start on time, which i found really annoying. Especially since it was a bunch of unknown comics! There was literally about ten people in the audience.
I felt a little bad for the comics, and even worse when they started performing!
I really wanted to laugh, i truly did. But these guys were seriously bad. They had no flow, no sense of timing, and didn't seem to have enough material to fill their set.
I highly doubt i'd go back.

Cute little club! Cinco De Mayo Night was Comedy Night and I really had a great time!. No Drink Min. Small and personable staff.

One block from the Powell St. Cable Car turnaround, this is the best place to see six up-and-coming comics for only $10. I'll admit I'm a bit biased since I perform there, but this place really is not your parents' comedy club. The comedy is edgier and more experimental, and every show gives a variety of comics so you're not going to only get one type of humor.
