50 Local may be my favorite restaurant in the Kennebunks. The service is impeccable, the decor is tastefully done and ambient, and the food is close to perfect. The menu features locally grown vegetables and herbs, quality meats, and fresh seafood. The drink menu is impressive and seems to rotate to deliver whatever is fresh and seasonally appropriate. Definitely worth checking out.

A year and a half after "Vanessa V."'s review of 50 Local, it looks like the staff at 50 Local is still discriminating against younger customers. My fianceé and I went to Kennebunk to celebrate her birthday and we were excited to visit 50 Local. Despite the fact that we went on a relatively slow night, we were seated and promptly forgotten about while larger groups of older patrons were attended to first. I had to flag down a waitress and ask if we could place an order - amazingly, she attempted to leave without taking our order before relenting when I threatened to leave for the restaurant across the street.
We decided to make the best of it though and were looking forward to the food... right up until it arrived with a bug on my fianceé's plate. Really? Really. One of the dangers of using fresh, local, organic produce is that you could end up with insects on your plate if the kitchen doesn't actually wash it good enough. Rookie mistake and, when compounded by the very apparent lack of care and attention by the wait staff, one that makes this a very easy "pass" in the future given how many great choices you'll find in town.
At no point did anyone at 50 Local offer even a hint of an apology. I'm sure "Vanessa V." and I would both welcome a public one for being ignored based on our ages, but I'm not holding my breath. -

Best restaurant we've been to in along long time...we'll be back! -

It was a real pain to make a reservation, but I'm glad I did because the place was totally packed. In the end, the food was delicious, but the pretentious waitress left a bad taste in my mouth. She pretty much ignored my husband and I while totally sucking up to the older couples and larger groups that came in. Just because we're young doesn't mean we don't know how to tip-- or how not to. Regardless, we are locavores and appreciate any restaurant that sources their meat and produce, especially when they can cook as well as the chefs at 50 Local.
I think 50 Local could survive in New York, and that's the best compliment I can give to a new restaurant in Kennebunk. -

Let's be honest. The Kennebunk/port food scene is stuck in 1988, complete with George HW Bush regalia on the walls. Seriously. One quick walk through the towns and I quickly lowered my expectations to one great lobster shack experience, nothing else.
Luckily, my wife found 50 Local. A bright moon in an otherwise dark night. With updated and innovative plays on all the local seafood and produce, great service, happy people all around. The wine list is small yet superbly chosen and priced.
I believe that 50 Local will spark a revolution in the Kennebunks! -

This place is a breath of fresh air in the midst of the same old boring seafood fare. How many clam shacks and lobster shanties does one town need?
50 Local serves new American cuisine made with local produce and meats. The steak frites were melt-in-my-mouth delicious and my husband's lobster carbonara was also quite pleasant.
We followed dinner up with a whole plate of desserts for our table of 5 to share. Although I was fit to burst, I tried each and every item. I believe my favorite was a profiterole-like pastry with blueberries. (or maybe they were two separate desserts and I just put them together.)
The ambiance was modern and comfortable, although it was a bit chilly. I really like the chalkboard pillars. And the service was excellent. (Thank you, James!)
Next time I'm up Maine way, I'll have to stop back in again. -

2 out of the four items on the veggie platter were good. We ordered sangria and it came in a vase so full of ice that there was barely enough liquid for 2 drinks. We had a similar experience as another customer. The waiter seemed to pay very little attention to us compared to how much attention he paid to older guests. I loved the list of food on the chalkboard that tells you where everything comes from. Overall great menu and has a lot of potential. They need to work on treating all customers with respect and sincerity. The two employees we interacted with were kind of rude.
I love and respect their "local" menu and don't want my 3 stars to discourage guests. It was mostly because of the service and being ripped off on our drinks. -

Great place. The food was excellent. The service was very good. (Alison) The dipping sauce for the beignets was unbelievable as a desert. A must try place. My only suggestion is for the lighting to be a little bit brighter.

I dont know what took so long for Kennebunk to finally get a decent restaurant. We have been traveling to the Kennebunk/Kennebunkport area for weekends from the Bean and have been tired of the same old, same old. We stumbled upon 50 Local by chance and dined at the bar on their second night open. They specialize in local products to round out their "bistro-ish" menu. We had spring rolls, spicy tofu, a burger (grass fed!), and lobster carbonara. All were so delicious that we are planning our next trip already. Bartender was extremely knowledgeable and you could not tell that it was their opening week. Everything so well done.

Brunch is unique and de-lish. We held a holiday party here and the guests said it was the best party they'd been to all season! Well-executed menu, varied and such a nice change from same 'ole, same 'ole in this area. Host and Owner Merrilee oversees front-of-the-house with ease and charm, Chef Owner David certainly has it down. The staff is friendly and efficient. Love the space. Try it soon.

I live locally and have been waiting for this restaurant to open. In the summer it's too hard to get down to the Port. Have already eaten here twice. Prices are reasonable, food is incredible; I really enjoy eating at the bar. I recommend the spicy tofu, the eggrolls, the steak and scallops. They also list the farms they get their food from on the chalkboard. That's pretty cool, makes you feel like your supporting local farms with your money.

Went for dinner mid-week. The place was moderately full considering it was the first month of opening and not on the weekend. We had a reservation and our table was ready immediately. Tables are a bit close together. We knew the couple next to us (and fortunately we like them) but in a small town, if we weren't friendly with them, it would have made for an awkward dinner.
We ordered from the house cocktail menu and both enjoyed our maitais. Potent and tasty without being too sweet. On to apps, both had the mixed greens which were delicious. Fresh bread on the side was also tasty. Wait service was punctual but not excessively so. Meals: lobster carbonara for me and porkchop for my husband. When I order carbonara, I know I am in for sinful, lots of cream and cheese -- a real indulgence. I think this fell short somewhat, not as rich or flavorful as most carbonara I have had. The peas were very fresh and the lobster was well cooked, but overall not show stopping. My husband's porkchop was well cooked but he concluded he isn't wild about balsamic reductions. Servings were large enough for both of us to take home leftovers for the next day's lunch. For dessert we ordered the beignets even though we had no room for them and only ate one, but took the others home for the next day. Simple but good. Coffee was tasty. On the whole, I enjoyed the food and there were certainly enough intriguing options on the menu that I feel sure we will be back to try 50 Local again. -

Have eaten here twice already this week. What a nice change for Kennebunk - great to have a place with something other than fried food and the same old, same old. Not that that is bad when you come to Maine but when you are here for more than a week it gets boring and this restaurant is not boring. Another plus is that it is open past 9pm.
So far we have had the fish tacos, the lobster egg roll, the steak and frites, the lobster carbonara, the arctic char, all were really tasty and good. The only recommendation was my daughter had the fish stew and it had cilantro which she doesn't like and would have preferred to have been told it had cilantro so that she would have eliminated it. The beignets were also delicious for dessert. This is going to become one of the most popular restaurants in the area because the food is fresh and great and the pricing is good. Hope I will continue to be able to get a table.
