5 Star is awesome! I absolutely love it here!!
I've been at 5 Star for a little over a year now and I honestly can't imagine my life without this place--cheesy, I know, but it's true. My workout is usually the highlight of my day, and I always leave feeling energized and giddy.
The people here are really friendly and welcome you into the 5 Star family. When I first started, I remember thinking the instructors must have a really good way of weeding out the troublemakers because everyone was so nice. All the members help each other get better, and you never have to worry about getting pounded on, even in the sparring classes working with guys twice your size!
Kru John is amazing and there is so much to learn from him. He's so patient and works with everyone at their own level, so you don't feel so self-conscious when you first start. He's always pushing everyone to work harder and he's tough because he wants everyone to improve. Plus, he's just so nice, it makes those 8-count body builders and burpees not so bad.
I could never have asked for a better gym with such phenomenal instructors and incredible work out buddies. And here, you WILL get a workout, and one like you've never had before. -

I have so many positive things to say that I don't know where to begin. I started training in the Muy Thai and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu program at 5 Star Martial Arts six months ago. I have to say that I am very happy with the decision that I made stay and train at 5 Star Martial Arts for many reasons.
1. Professionalism
I already had a good impression when I made the first phone call to inquire information about the school. When I called, I was kindly greeted by Instructor ( Kru John Spezzano). Kru John was informative, professional and very helpful, he also assured me with confidence that I would enjoy my training at 5 Star Martial Arts. The phone conversation is what prompted me to want to come in and check out the school.
2. Quality of Instructors
Muy Thai Program- Kru John Spezzano is very detail oriented when he teaches his class. Kru John walked me through the basic steps and made sure that I understood how to maintain the correct stance. Kru John was very patient with me and made sure that I grasped the concept of the fundamentals before moving on to the next step. I also appreciate the fact that Kru John will bring it to my attention when I have an incorrect stance at the very moment that it occurs and will assist me in making the necessary adjustments early on. Kru John has inspired me in so many ways, that I always strive to push harder when I train.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Progam- Professor Shawn Williams is also very detail oriented and walks you through the techniques step by step. It is amazing how Professor Shawn Williams breaks down the theory of a technique so that all belt levels understand. Professor Shawn Williams also has such as encouraging voice, which motivates me to try my best to master the technique that is being taught. Professor Shawn Williams also brought it to my attention if my technique was incorrect at the moment it occurred and patiently guided me in the right direction.
3. Safety
Both Kru John Spezzano and Professor Shawn Williams have eagle eyes!! There is so much movement going on with many students and I always see Kru John Spezzano and Professor Shawn Williams cornering every angle of the room watching all students. There were times when I could recall Kru John telling to me put my hands up during Muy Thai practice from way across a crowded room and I would say to myself "How did he see that"? I also had the same experience with Professor Shawn Williams. There were times when I could hear him telling me to move my hand or change my position, from across a crowded room. I really appreciate the fact that both Kru John Spezzano and Professor Shawn Williams will make sure that the students are practicing in a safe environment. The instructors are constantly moving around and monitoring the class. You may see Kru John Spezzano or Professor Shawn Williams across the room and in a few seconds they will be right next to you. It's very interesting!
4. Quality of Coaches
I have to give my respect to the coaches who also assist in teaching the classes. They offer the same level of quality as the instructors do. This is a perfect example of how the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.
5. Flexible schedule- 5 Star Martial Arts offers morning and evening classes which works well with my busy schedule.
In a nutshell, if you are a motivated individual eager to learn and train hard, than 5 Star Martial Arts is the place to be! There are no ego's here at 5 Star Martial Arts just individuals who train and work hard to improve themselves. Fellow students are also willing to help anyone who has questions. I highly recommend to anyone that is interested, to come in and sign up for a free trial. -

5 Stars for 5 Star!
I started training in the Muay Thai program for over a year and a half now. I came in as a Judoka from my High School years and was no where in that kind of shape anymore. Since the boom of Mixed Martial Arts, I decided to learn something new. I remember requesting a free trail and going in with no knowledge of any stand up what-so-ever, the best part is many students as well as the instructor (Kru John) welcomed me with open arms and provided assistance not only in my technique but as well as my conditioning. Boy these guys pushed me to the limits!
I came in at a whopping 230lbs at 5'10. I was an overweight fat boy who was a borderline diabetic, insomniac, and always complained about back issues. That all changed after a period of time training in 5 Star Martial Arts. Not only did it give you a great workout, but it pushed me to do better to improve my overall performance and general health. Eventually in 7 months after training in 5 Star, I lost 60lbs and became a lean mean machine at 170lbs. (I have pictures to prove it!!!!)
Aside from the great program and workout, you learn a lot from Kru John as an instructor. Not only does he focus to help you physically, but mentally as well. There are many advices he gives that I live by today!
He explained to me one time that it was me that put in the effort and time to achieve my weight loss. Although it is true, it matters where and how you use your effort and time... and that is all well spent training at 5 Star Martial Arts!
P.S. Be warned, you will be sweating from top to bottom! -

I started training in Muay Thai at 5 Star Martial Arts back in November 2010. Fast forward 1 and a 1/2 years, and I can tell you, this was the best decision I've ever made to become a member of the 5 Star family.
When I started, I had already lost a bit of weight and thought I was in good shape. I was forced to eat humble pie very quickly. The one hour workout not only challenged my cardio endurance, but also my body strength. I don't think I've ever done so many pushups, crunches and squats in my life! I won't lie to you, it was tough but I enjoyed it and signed up for 2 classes a week. I now regularly take 1-2 classes a day, 5 times a week.
The level of teaching is phenomenal. Kru John Spezzano is one of the best in the business, and he uses great detail and care in teaching everyone proper form and technique. This is not a cardio kickboxing class you get at 24 hour fitness or LA fitness. It's the real deal.
The school also offers Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Kettle Bell classes. Although I've never taken BJJ, I can tell you that it is also a great program as well as KB classes. My only issue now is how do I fit KB into my workout schedule?!
If you, like me, have an interest in learning Martial Arts, getting fit and having fun, what are you waiting for??? You won't regret it. -

I joined 5 Star Martial Arts to improve my physique, but this organization does more then that. It challenges you to get out your comfort level and discover your inner strength. I believe these talented, patient instructors don't just teach you how to fight, but how to see confrontation differently and overcome it. This is a great organization and I am thankful for what they do for their students.

I train BJJ here, the instructor is great, although I've had better but I think for beginner and intermediate level, this place is more than sufficient.
On the other hand I tried several of their Muay Thai session, this is really not the place for MT. The compositions are way to simple, there are not much technique being taught, and the level of the people diverse too much. I won't recommend it. -

I started training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai here about a year ago. Prior to my membership I had no experience with any martial art whatsoever. I was a dancer, gymnast, and cheerleader and let me tell you, never have I felt more welcome joining any fitness program then when I came to 5 Star!
The atmosphere is wonderful, the instruction is out of this world, and the people you will meet are the best. Professor Shawn Williams (BJJ instructor) and Kru John Spezzano (Muay Thai & Kettlebells instructor) both have an uncanny knack for paying attention to detail. When it comes to teaching, their knowledge and depth of their respective sport is truly inspirational, it makes you want to attain that level of wisdom. Consequently they are the friendliest/nicest guys you will ever meet, I promise!
You know the old adage, "Birds of a feather flock together." At 5 Star this definitely rings true. The terrific instructors bring in terrific students. The members here are very inviting and you'll quickly feel like a part of the family. As a female I was intimidated at first picking up sports that are typically male-dominated. I had no reason to worry though, everyone was considerate of my skill level and athleticism and I felt welcomed and at ease almost instantaneously. The upper belts are almost always willing to help out in training and whenever I leave I feel like I've improved in some way after class. I also feel very comfortable rolling and sparring with guys, everyone is very respectful! Now that the gym has expanded many females have joined so ladies, have no fear!
Additionally... the mats are cleaned at the end of each day and the gym has expanded! There are now showers in the locker rooms and there is a designated Muay Thai room and Kettlebells area. Very exciting things are happening at 5 Star :] -

The quick summary - 5 stars for 5 Star
I took several years of blended martial arts in Chicago and the one thing I missed was not the training itself, but the community. When I moved here several years ago, I stepped out of the martial arts training spotlight for several years but have now finally come back to my senses to find a good gym just like it. After a few years of off and on research, I finally found the right place, and its 5 Star.
When you train in martial arts, its not just a fighting art, but a discipline. John and Shaun practice just that style of teaching. As you workout to the top levels of physical fitness, all the while you are taught not only strength and style, but respect. If you don't pay respect to your partner before or after a workout session - out come the push ups.
So whether you're training to be a pro-fighter or just working out for the fitness aspect, everyone is taught to work with each other. Success comes in so many levels, whether its a championship title at a national competition or physical wellness, that everyone wants their classmate to succeed in whatever level.
I take Muay Thai and couldn't be happier. They have good class times for whatever your schedule may be (day and night) and whether 2 or 20 people show up for class, you always get your fill of training. When your t-shirt is 3x heavier at the end of class due to sweat, then you know you had a good class.
I see the same when I come in before class and see Shaun with his Brazilian Jiu Jitsu class or Jon with his Kettlebells Class. Respect. Workout. Sweat. Community.
Ok, and the self-defense aspects are pretty "kick butt" too... -

Five stars for 5 Star!
I've been training under the amazing tutelage of Professor Shaun Williams for a little over two years now and it has been one of the best experiences of my life. Jiu jitsu is more than a sport, it's a lifestyle and the people that you will meet and train with here at 5 Star are among the best around. From the elite level of instruction to the atmosphere of the academy to the level of fitness you will achieve, 5 Star is the place to learn for Brazilian jiu Jitsu, Muay Thai, Kettlebells, or Mixed Martial Arts training.
You will meet people from all walks of life here and don't be surprised if you see an occasional world champ popping on in to train as well. Whatever you fitness goals, 5 Star is by far the best place to help you reach them. -

I'm a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu purple belt and have been a student of Professor Shawn Williams for over 5 years.
The two most important things to me when selecting a BJJ School are: 1. Quality of instruction and 2. Training partners. Here's my take on both at 5 Star Martial Arts:
1. Quality of instruction
The best. By far. I've trained at several schools all over California and even overseas, and there's a reason why I always come back to take Shawn's classes. His knowledge and attention to detail are on a level I've yet to see matched anywhere else. Seriously, it's ridiculous - you just have to see it for yourself.
Besides that, Shawn's a very friendly and encouraging instructor, and his classes are always fun. He doesn't just sit back after teaching either - he'll engage with you and make sure you learn the technique properly, whether you're a white belt or a black belt.
My guess is that after taking one class with Shawn you'll want to sign up immediately, like I did on my first day.
2. Training partners
No complaints here. We have a lot of talented guys (and gals), particularly blues and purples, though it's not uncommon to see brown and black belts here on any given day. I can always count on good, tough training every time I'm on the mats.
That said, it's a very safe training environment - no meatheads or crazies trying to rip your knee off. Part of the reason is that Shawn cultivates a very safety-oriented attitude towards training, and I think the upper belts set a good example for everyone else too.
Most of all, I really like everyone here. We're a big group of friends that's always going out for beers, celebrating birthdays or watching fights on the weekends. Just an awesome team is all I can say.
Other stuff: Good, new mats with plenty of mat space. Lots of parking. Nice neighborhood. We also have a great Muay Thai and Kettlebell program which I'll get around to trying some day...
Location: At the T-intersection of Wilshire and Crenshaw, it's the big office building that says HARBOR on top so you can't miss it. Entrance is from the parking lot behind the building.
Parking: Free in the lot after 7pm. Otherwise I usually park on the side streets (6th street is usually best).
5 Star Martial Arts. Pretty much the only reason I still live in this damn city.
First class is free, what up! -

My husband won the luck of the draw at the "Let's Meat, Korean BBQ Cook Off!" ... or something to that effect. ;) Anyway, he won 2 week's worth of lessons at 5 Star Martial Arts and somehow talked them into getting me for the free trial sessions too! hehe!!!
So today, we did a quick muay thai lesson - 45 minutes. And within that 45 minutes... I was sweating like crazy. They make you do a few circuit training warm ups followed by different rounds of punches and kicks. John, our instructor was very easy to get along with and made everything easy to learn from. He actually teaches 7 types of martial arts but understands where everyone is coming from.
I took a trial kickboxing (not turbo kickbox) in Pasadena with a friend of mine at another martial arts studio... and I have to say this place definitely has a larger space and better regime. Easy to follow and doesn't exhaust you out quickly.
Lots and lots of other classes are offered throughout the week--- Jujitsu, A.R.K (mix of different martial arts), Muay Thai.. to name a few. Looking forward to the next few classes. =)
*** My workout philosophy is this: Work out to be strong and healthy and do it with something you like. When you work out this way, you can almost eat anything anyway because you lose so many calories. Don't just work out to be skinny, fit into a dress or lose a few pounds in the short term..it usually does not last. *** -

I started training at 5 Star in July 2010 after visiting a few jiu jitsu gyms. I chose to train here because of the friendly atmosphere and extraordinarily detailed instruction from Professor Shawn Williams. Having trained Martial Arts as a kid, I really appreciated the fact that all the upper belts weren't itching to beat up newer kids.
Since I started, I have joined in on the Muay Thai and Kettlebells class. I can't get enough of it now. I have lost 20+ lbs., am in the best shape of my life, and have improved my confidence quite a bit. This is truly an outstanding martial arts gym and a great workout. -

Whether you want to be a MMA fighter, learn Brazilian Jiujitsu or Kickboxing or just find a positive atmosphere to get in physical shape, 5 Star Martial Arts is the place to train.
The key to getting better at any type of martial art or getting in better physical shape is to stay motivated and The key to staying motivated is having great instructors and a positive environment to train.
Even though I work in Lancaster and live in Valencia, I drive all the way to Los Angeles every week because I really believe there is no better instructors and environment to train than 5 Stars.
Shawn Williams is the BJJ instructor and he is by far the most technical and detail oriented instructor I have had the honor to train under. There is a reason MMA and BJJ fighters such as George St. Pierre have come from all around the world to train under Shawn.
John Spezzano is a top level Muay Thai and kettlebells instructor that has spent his whole life mastering various different martial arts. His attention to detail has already made a huge impact in my training.
Clarrel Pope is the kids instructor and my 5 year old son is not only leaning self defense, jiujitsu and kickboxing, he's also learning discipline and respect. If any of you have kids, I highly recommend trying the class.
The atmosphere at 5 stars is like a big family. There are no aggressive meathead type guys there as we all understand that we are there to help each other learn.
If you are thinking about joining a gym of any kind, definitely come check us out and take a free class. You have nothing to lose! -

Finding a good environment plus quality instruction were key factors in my search for a place to train Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. When i moved to Los Angeles in 2009, my friend recommended me to train here - out of all the great schools in Southern California. Today, i definitely appreciate my friend for helping me find everything i was looking for.
The instructors are incredibly technical and patient, and the environment was one that i felt would encourage my development and technique. I highly recommend anyone interested to check 5 star out! -

Before heading off for the Air Force, I needed a place where I can train Jiu-Jitsu without leaving the Mid-Wilshire area. Having trained at John Machado's academy in Culver City (which I also highly recommend), I wanted to stay a bit closer to home so that I can grapple more often. When I heard that Shawn Williams was going to open up Renzo Gracie Los Angeles in the heart of Koreatown, it was an opportunity I couldn't pass up. Shawn is incredibly detailed and focused on the fundamentals, and his concise instructions along with his easy-going attitude makes it a very conducive atmosphere to learn. This place also has great classes for Muay Thai and kettlebells, which are worth taking a look. I'm still tying up some loose ends before I ship out, but I try to come here as often as I can before I leave. Do yourself a favor and check it out!

So much to write about:
1. No one asked me to write about this.
2. Just so i could write a review, i decided to make a yelp account.
I have checked out quite a few gyms. The friends that are now with me at Renzo Gracie Los Angeles with Shawn WIlliams have also trained at quite a few gyms. Checked out couple GB's particularly Encino, Pasadena, Arcadia, Selva BJJ, etc...
Professor Williams care about your well being. Yea he wants you to be good, but if your injured you cant train, and when you don' train you don't get good. He actually corrects us so we don't get hurt. The higher belts will go light on you in contrast to most gyms, they will go hard to prove themselves to you.
When you look for a gym... First should be on the quality of instruction. Good friendly environment should be a given.
Professor Williams will explain the concepts, theory, and the details behind each move. If your instructor could finish giving instruction in a sentence or two, your missing out. If your instructor doesn't give you more detail than a youtube clip... your missing out.
I agree that his regular class feels like a private from any other black belt. People preach about Jiu Jujitsu being an art and how they work as a family, but from the gyms that i have checked out its not so. People practice what they preach here.
I have improved more in one month than 7-8 months at my old gym. First, your philosophy will change. You can tell when you roll with people there whether they have started with shawn or jumped in.
I wrote this review because a lot of people struggle in finding a gym. And I love jiu jitsu and anyone who passionately loves it the same way i do, and wish the best for those who try to practice Jiu Jitsu. Not a big fan of guys that rely wholly on strength and get by.
This message is for those who truly want to learn technique and already have a passion for Jiu Jitsu. Just check it once, thats all it took for me to sign up here at Renzo Gracie Los Angeles. -

I've been at 5 Star a little over a month and all the instructors are awesome! Kru John and Professor Shawn's classes are mentally and physically challenging and greatly technical! They are offering a free week trial so sign up and see you there!
