Ah-May-Zing! If you're in scary Vernon or Huntington Park, be not afraid... For there is 5 Star Deli! I started working down the street and within the first month, I was on a first name basis with the (I think owner/manager). She is super friendly and so grateful for all her customers... The building is nothing special, but just go in! Now to the food...
Before I decided to be gluten-free, I ate the Veggie Panini like it was my JOB! Holy smokes that thing is GOOD! Cheese, avocado, a roasted green chile pepper, lettuce, tomato and onion... The panini is toasted and crispy! I always paired it with the garlic fries (which explained my expanded waist line) but in moderation, they're a MUST HAVE!
I went back for lunch today, after a short break from the calories, and had a delicious cranberry walnut salad! This place has something for everyone! -

Fast friendly delicious.
Not usually found in the same breath as mentioning the city of Vernon, 5 Star is a great option for lunch - especially take out. All of their sandwiches are bomb and the rye marble bread is worth the carbs. -

5 Star looks like an abandoned building from the outside. Don't let the look fool you. Their tuna is AMAZING. Not too much mayo, and just the right amount of crunch. The marble rye bread is also fresh and delicious. Never had anything BUT the tuna because it was so good I couldn't bring myself to get anything else. The service is great and the women that work there are pretty helpful. The salads aren't great nor worth the money (I think they just buy them at the store and pour them into a bowl). Overall, great place and fresh food for VERNON!

This place is one hella hidden gem. You can clearly tell it used to be a liquor store, and to be honest.. when my boyfriend took me here, I felt uneasy since I thought I was gonna get shot or something.
Boy, was it a great decision to come here!
Garlic Fries... BOMB!! My boyfriend and I split the large, and ended up getting through half. Stick with the small/regular and you'll be satisfied. They top off the bomb fries with some cheese and garlic bits with herbs.
I ordered the chicken pesto panini... YUM!!! :D It comes with a pickle, so I was pleasantly surprised. I only got through half since I was eating it with the fries, so portions are great.
My boyfriend ordered some italian meat combo which was great, too!
I think all drinks are $2 though.. so some drinks I thought were kind of a rip off. How can a $2 water bottle be equivalent to other soft drinks? Or some of the specialty teas?
Beats me. Everything here is great though, and super fresh!!
Happy eats! -
Review from Lucy K.
Tried out a build your own sandwich with Roast Beef and cheddar. The sandwich was FULL of lettuce and tomatoes. There was a generous dollup of Mayo and Mustard. Bread tasted a little dry - but other than that it was a really great and filling sandwich.
Ordered a side of Macaroni Salad and it tasted like something you just buy from the store. Not bad, but nothing wow about it -

Working in Vernon, CA isn't a dream, and neither are the lunch options around the area. (If it didn't take 30 minutes to get to Little Tokyo, it might be more tolerable!)
5 Star Deli is my little hidden pocket of happiness on a hard day when all I want is a good, tasty meal that doesn't come from a dollar menu. My usual is the Caprese Panini. It's a pretty good size and super delicious!! It doesn't come with fries, which is probably a good thing since I would never be able to finish them anyway. The ingredients are fresh and don't taste super processed.
Granted, I usually spend 6 times more than I would on any dollar menu sandwich, but I consider it 6 times better! -

I'm a fan. You see, in this heavily industrial wasteland you have choices of el pollo loco, subway, in-n-out (which i'll never complain about) and a few other hidden "gems".
5-star deli is a refuge in the sea of concrete and chains. Although the outside is unassuming (booorrrriiiinnngggggguuuh!) the inside is clean and, for this area, different. The meals are typically under $10 for sandwhich, chips and a drink.
I've had a few of the paninis and they sit pretty heavy. Kind of oily. Good though. You're not going to be disappointed, but you'll be experiencing it for a few hours.
The tuna on the other hand is their strongest play. Not too mayo-y and ultimately it's pretty darn good. I do mine with toasted sourdough, hold the may, add dijon, extra tomato. Happy enough.
It's a 3-star because I'm comparing it to everything else I've experienced. If it were a regional award, they'd get 4.5. But it's not! So 3!

This is a decent sized deli located in the back streets of Huntington Park- strictly serving the blue collar neighborhood around. It's very clean, air conditioned, and has a solid soup / salad / sandwich menu. They have some really good cookies ( read: buttery and bad for your heart good)
I've stopped by in the am to pick up oatmeal and once on the weekends, looks like they've cut down their hours to M-F lunch only. I like the sides and the soups are pretty good. A great place to have a decent lunch if you're not in the mood for fast food / mexican. -

As far as random delis go this one is pretty good. I ordered a burger with avocado. They forgot to put it on. But the waitress was really nice and brought it to me right away. Ordering was quick and food came out quick. Burger was ok. Generic frozen patty variety. Heard deli sandwiches are better. Fries are delicious. Lots of drink choices. Looked like they had some yummy cookies but I behaved myself and didn't get them. Overall a decent experience.

This place is great down the street from my job! I have tried a few of there sandwiches and they are great! My fav is the chicken Pesto! And how can I forget my simplest sandwich I order every now and then is my GRILLED CHEESE! This place is a hidden Gem in this small city! I highly recommend this small business. The service is awesome here!

Very secluded place but was referred to it by Yelp, so i tried it out. It was 5 minutes away from my job and i was craving a sandwich, so i stopped by, i had The Veggie and a macaroni salad, the sandwich was so good, so much flavor, and the bread was perfectly toasted! Will definitely be having this again!

OH man...the veggie panini is like a religious experience. I think I ate the whole thing in less than 3 minutes b/c it is SO GOOD. Roasted green chilies, chipotle mayo, cheese galore, avocado, lettuce, tomato, red onion. It's all really-well-balanced.
For the record, I'm not a real panini fan either. But I love this sandwich despite its tendency to cut up the roof of your mouth much in the way Cap'n Crunch does.2 Previous Reviews: Show all »

5 Star is the bomb. i dont know why you guys are giving it 4 stars. i mean...the place is named 5 Star for a reason! i've been there numerous times and i havent had the same sandwich twice. i'm picky with food, but this place makes me want to try everything on the menu!
breakfast is bomb here too. "big daddy breakfast burrito" is the the best thing since sliced bread. even better with my modification. but i'm not gona put that on here. you have to find out for yourself. ask for the "euseph special". -

This place just re-opened recently and was completely remodeled, and it's under new management new name. One word that comes to mind is FRESH. You can tell they take pride in the quality of their food with every dish. It's not a vast menu, but a good enough selection where there's something for everyone. The menu ranges from breakfast burritoes, sandwiches, soups (usually abondigas or chicken noodle - the first is really good), pasta, salad, etc. Prices range from $6-$7, which some of you may think is pricey, but they don't skimp you on the food or the fries (regular and garlic). There's only a limited supply of dessert options - cookies ($.25) or cinnabun ($1.00), but even those are good. The customer service is spot on as well. I had only been there maybe once or twice before, but the cashier remembered my name. You don't see that happen in a lot of establishments. Another perk is that it's within walking distance from where I work, so I can eat and also exercise afterwards. :) The location is a bit obscure, but you can't really miss it. They have a sign, so check it out sometime!
