Best mexican food in the area!!
It's small but worth the wait. Friendly staff and really good food. The margaritas are to die for. A must for any meal if your in the area. -

I went with a buddy for a lunch. I had a chorizo enchilada. I really wasn't that impressed.
Parking in the area is metered and usually extremely difficult to find.
It's convenient and passable, but not a destination dining experience. -

I came here last wkend for Sunday brunch and was quite impressed. Five Burros reminded me of Blockhead's in terms of the interior, minus the sock monkeys, of course. It had a nice rustic cantina feel. The chips and salsa were tasty, but the real stand-out was the lobster burrito I had. I was surprised that it wasn't expensive at all--I like lobster but I'm the baller on a budget, so I hardly eat it all the time--and came with rice and beans plus pico de gallo.
I definitely want to come back and try the drinks. The couple at the next table from us, who happened to be very friendly, were having some and they looked delicioso.Listed in: Queens: The Land of Kings

Let me start off by saying that the wait is ridiculous...and the service is slow (lunch or dinner). The margaritas are fantastic and the chicken quesadilla is filled with meat (no skimping)! Overall, the food is decent, but not worth the wait. The margaritas might be more worth the wait than the food...

You want drunken whores to take home on a late night... come get it.
You want to pay very little for both... come get it.

The five stars here are for the frozen margaritas!
Haven't had chance yet to devour the food, but my friend says that this is the best Mexican place in Queens. By far, they have the best frozen margaritas! LOVED it that all drinks are served in jars!! What a detail...
It's a small place - great bar scene. Can't wait to try their food!! -
Review from Jerry K.
I love this place. The endless, if you ask, supply of chips and salsa is fantastic. And the frozen margaritas really hits the spot on a hot and long day.
Lots of tables, but near the weekend it gets really crowded starting Thursday.
My favorites here are the Chipotle Chuleta pork, and mixed combination fajitas. Either works wonders on your hunger and taste palettes. Service is fast and friendly.
I've already mentioned the frozen margaritas, but I'll add it again here because the flavors are terrific. -

Food Was GREAT
Frozen Drinks Was GREAT
Chips & Salsa GOOD
Only Bad Thing Is That This Place Is So Small . Like A Little Box , They Should Consider Expanding It Being That Alot Of People Goes There. In The From There's People Waiting To Be Seated Standing Over People Who's Having Dinner .... Luckily I Got A Seat In The Back So It Wasn't That Bad ... Overall Experience Was Good
Oh & The Drinks Are Really Cheap !! -

I really do love this place, but I have never been in there without having to wait to be seated, table or bar.... the place seems to always be jam packed. But it's worth it, the food is awesome and so are the drinks.

This is my neighborhood spot in queens for the best mexican food. Its small/always crowded Y because the food is Yumm and Alex along with the other bartenders and waitstaff are Cool/ drinks kick. Apart from the seats at the bar you're blocking passage but nobody yells at you or pushes u out the way. Wish it was bigger but its Chilled Atmosphere.

Mexican is one of my favorite cuisines and 5 Burro Cafe didn't disappoint. The wait was crazy long (1.5 hrs plus) but I'm glad we sucked it up. The yelp reviews convinced me that the wait was worth it.
The chips were pretty bland but I loved the salsa, The margaritas were strong/tasty and the food (shrimp quesadilla and beef chimichanga) was delicious. We left completely satisfied with a nice little buzz to go along with it.
I probably wouldn't come on the weekend again but would definitely make this a weeknight dinner spot from time to time. My weekend time is precious! LOL
It's a great option for Mexican food and bomb margaritas in Queens! -
Review from Chris S.
Long Beach, CA
Being a California native where Mexican food is everywhere, me giving this place 4 stars says a lot.
I went in expecting the place to be shitty like nearly all the other Mexican food places in NY. I was proven wrong. The Chimichangas and Margaritas made a very satisfying meal.... and you can never go wrong with chips. I would definitely recommend this place.
Pros:
- Great food
- Great Margaritas
- Tapatio Hot Sauce
Cons:
- We waited nearly an hour for a table
- Restaurant is so tiny that you and your friends will literally be eating shoulder to shoulder (a fire hazard waiting to happen)
- Come loaded with money. The food here is very pricey. Do not come with anything less than $50Comment from marla c. of 5 Burro Cafe 3/26/2012

Love the Mussels appetizer! You wouldn't think to order the Mussels in a place like this but you are truly missing out! The mussels in the spicy tomato sauce are AMAZING. Oh yes, and the Margaritas are the best. I personally love mine flavored Peach or Mango on the Rocks, make that a double and it will come in a neat little jar :)
For those frozen margarita lovers there is a place in your heart for this place. It is a small place that won't seat you until your entire party is there but it makes sense why they do this. They need to keep the tables moving. Also it is a pretty loud place so if you are looking for a romantic night out this is not the place. I wouldn't suggest taking children there but it is a good place to be with friends. -

Frozen drinks are NEVER my first choice but something about the frozen flavored margaritas here are...well...they make me sing! " baby you da best, baby you da best...you da best I eva had". To eat I recommend the nachos and the quesadillas. Both awesome and "splurge" on the guac.
Only downside is no happy hour. -

Yes, the frozen margaritas are amazing and worth the wait! But beware about going on weekends Or Friday nights because it will be packed and the wait will be more than 30 mins. If you can find a seat at the bar do it! Mostly because everyone who eats at a table MOST order food. Keep that in mind! The service at the bar isn't the greatest but the food certaintly makes up for it. I've been there several times and it's always fun !

My West Coast brain always forgets that New York is brought to you by the makers of The Container Store. Non-New Yorkers beware: the place is small.
I arrived much earlier than my lunch companions, so they wouldn't seat me until everyone arrived. I ordered a double margarita that the bartender served in a glass jelly jar (too cute).
I was drunk.
My first companion arrived, but they wouldn't seat us until our 3rd arrived. She ordered a Diet Coke and he chucked a basket of chips and salsa on the bar. Not rude, but certainly not welcoming. My companion and I exchanged The Look. You know, the Whiskey Tango Foxtrot look. Given the size of the space, I thought he could transfer our drinks to our table (it was less than 10 feet away!). But no. He asked us to close it out.
Weird.
2 Mimosas and another margarita later, I was looking forward to my shrimp omelet. The shrimp was huge and plump, but the omelet was very dry. Even after I put some guacamole on it (what? it was on the plate and the omelet was SUPER dry!).
My pals both ordered steak, which was very delicious. I highly recommend ordering that if you come here.
All in all, it was a "meh" for me. -

5 Burros is by far one of my favorite places for Mexican food. Very authentic & I am rarely disappointed with anything that I order. The place is quite small for the large crowd that floods in there...so you end up waiting close to an hour , even for just 2 people, especially on the weekends. But hey if the food rocks it's worth it!
My one gripe...some of the employees. They are not always the most welcoming bunch of people. It would be nice to feel your business is somewhat appreciated. A friendly smile would suffice. Several of the workers are very short with their answers. When we went last weekend we had to ask for the bill several times and when it finally came we ended up handing it over the the hostess because she saw how long we were sitting there. Maybe the wait for a table would be less crowded if the staff was more on top of their customers.Comment from marla c. of 5 Burro Cafe 5/2/2012

Everything I have tried on the menu is good here. I love the Mexican steak salad; the dressing is delectable. The frozen margaritas are fabulous and powerful. The place has a laid back, beachy vibe but gets very crowded on the weekends. Sometimes there is a long wait because the place isn't very big, but it is very popular.

4 stars for their food: pretty good and fresh. 1 star for wait time: it takes for the food to come out including takeout. Therefore when u try to get a table, you wait forever. Quac is yummy.

Review from Sophie H.
on friday night me and a friend ventured out here in search of guacamole. although the forecast promised rain, this tiny place was packed. we were told thered be a 45 minute wait for two. the decor is adorable, there are christmas lights strung about and a wide mixture of memorabilia, the place has a very underground feel.
we were starving and the minute i walked in through the door the delicious smells hit me. either i was really hungry or this meal was going to make me one happy camper. although we ventured into the nearby stores to kill time, by the time we got back we were dismayed to learn that there were 6-7 tables ahead of us. fortunately, as we were scanning the place, i noticed an empty seat at the bar and a woman paying her check. immediately, i nudged my friend and we honed in. the lady took her SWEET TIME paying the check, examining it. staring into space before assembling her bags and leaving. so tip of the day: grab a seat at the bar if you dont want to wait but not for the faint of heart.
the bartender was an oldish guy whose hardened features told me he hadn't smiled in 50 years. the bar was busy and he was working alone at his own pace. we ordered: guacamole, i had the three tacos and she had the chicken quesidilla. the guacamole was so fresh, so delicious, so perfect and so worth the 8$. the salsa and chips they give you complimentary were ok but i thought the salsa was a bit bland. my three tacos were soft flour tortillas with a choice of meat; i had two chicken and one steak. it came with a side of rice and beans, pico de gallo and sour cream and guacamole. my girlfriends huge quesdilla came with sour cream and pico de gallo. the chicken tacos were okay, they did not skimp on the meat but a tad dry. the steak taco however was perfectly cooked to a tender juiciness omgsh i wish i had ordered 3 mini steak tacos. and did i mention the guac was so good? i devoured the guacamole and tried a slice of my gfs quesidilla, it was good and meaty but i was too stuffed.
we had leftovers, both of us couldn't finish our plates even though we were both starving and the bill came out pretty cheap. im so happy to find an authentic, fresh and reasonably priced mexican restaurant within walking distance, my only quip is the crowds and that bartender needs a hug, jus sayin -

Not the fanciest and biggest place of them all, but the price for the food and the drinks are worth it. The pitcher of frozen margarita can be shared, but it's more of a lemonade feel than alcoholic. The food is great, I always go here on a time where I know it won't be crowded because im not a fan of waiting awhile for a table. Expect your space to be cramped if you go on a busy time. A lot of interesting decor around the restaurant.

After some heavy duty shopping last night in Forest Hills, I went to grab some margaritas with my BFF. This wasn't my first time at 5 Burros, but since I'm a YELPER now (wink, wink) I felt the need to write a review.
5 Burros in nestled inbetween all the posh stores on Austin Street at 70th Road (look out for the yellow and black awning and wooden bench). Upon entering you will see the Cancun themed narrow but long ;) restaurant filled with both regulars and newcomers. The hostess Carol is super sweet, very stylish, very pretty and ensures that if there is a wait time, she is the girl who will make you feel as if the time flew by.
Moving on to the drinks......please don't leave without having a BANGING $8 Margarita served in a cute nice size bound to get you feeling tipsy and happy mason jar mug.
La comida...the food....I have eaten just about everything on the menu from the Jumbo Shrimp cockktail, the chicken nachos, the steak salad, the steak fajitas, and for the first time last night the steak enchiladas. All of which are cooked to perfection and served to perfection by Esau ;) (he will more than likely be wearing a bandana on his head)
Side note....the bathroom is always clean and never stinks :)
I hope this review was helpful and maybe you will see -

This place is very small, so space is limited and waiting time will be around 15-40 minutes (hence 4 stars). The deco is certainly nothing but Mexican.
Once seated, free corn chips and amazing salsa are provided. Drinks are served in glass jars, similar to glass fruit jelly jars from your local grocery store. The staff is super friendly... We asked our server if he could change the channel to MSG so we could watch the Knicks game (Valentine's Day). He also warned us that all chipotle items on the menu require a lengthy wait time (40 minutes) when we wanted to order the chipotle ribs. "I don't want you to wonder where your food is!"
Anyways, we ordered the Mexican chicken salad, Mexican fries, and pork ribs. Everything was delicious! I loved the variety of the salad. It had avocado, bell pepper, grilled chicken, lettuce, tomato, lime juice, and romaine lettuce. The fries were baked... Soooo goooood. -

Patron for life! Things to try: tacos al pastor (so juicy and tender, not skimpy on amount of meat), flautas, shrimp avocado appetizer. Their chicken soup and salads are also great. I almost always leave with leftovers. That food is too good to waste. They get really busy (and it can get loud) so be prepared to wait or eat during off peak hours (2-6 pm is when I like to go there). Share a pitcher, its worth it, and yes, you're gonna finish it.

BOWLING GREEN, NY
We came in when it was empty on a weekday. We stayed a while and got drinks at first which were pretty good. Then when more friends came we got a table in the back. I ordered the tacos el pastor. It came with sour cream which is more tex-mex than anything BUT the pork was TENDER, great quality, it's the most I've seen in any taco. The rice and everything else was decent.
But the reason this place gets 3 stars instead of 4 is because of the service. It sucked once we got to the table. They came around maybe once every 40 minutes? The place was busy but...not an excuse. We didn't even leave a tip, and I usually tip 18% minimum. The guy also said he can't split the tab, which is absolute crap. To waiters who expect a tip, and a decent one, they know their job is to SERVE. This is a service industry. So to make us have to do the math on how much to put on what credit cards, is not a service. And to not stop by frequently enough to a table of about 6 people all ordering drinks and spending good money, is not good service. The waiter and the staff lost out on at least $30 in tips. -
Review from Chris I.
Came here with the GF looking for some good Mexican food. She had been here before but this was my first time. The bar and restaurant was packed (which is always a good sign) but out wait was only about 30 minutes.
The space is limited and they make use of every square inch of it, but while it was packed we had plenty of room to eat comfortably.
I had a margarita to start that was absolutely perfect. The apps we had we the guacamole which was very fresh and prepared perfectly and the Queso Fundido. It was cheesy and sausagy (new word, lol) which rank high in my book. a little spicy which i like and again prepared fresh. For the entrees I had the enchiladas ( i mixed the 3 fillings in them ) and they were prepared really well and I enjoyed them the next day too as the portions are really big and i couldn't finish it all.
Service was really great, as i mentioned it is really packed in there so you can wait a bit for the waiter but that is to be expected and it wasn't an overly long wait. A great place t eat that I highly recommend and will definitely be back to. -

The food is mediocre- you can say that they serve "Americanized" Mexican food. If anything, you should definitely come for the frozen drinks and cocktails. Their frozen margarita is a favorite but the 'Lizzy Burro' is great as well.

UYE: The First Ever Forest Hills / Kew Gardens Caloric Overload Crawl with Mike B. uplifts my weekend among fellow sincere and respectful Yelpers!!
Our party of eight dined with frozen Margarita totaling $114.70 which suffice for lunch. Five Burro Cafe, a Mexican restaurant with a New York state of mind for the five boroughs. We were not rushed to engulf our meal for good quality Mexican cuisine, which surely leaves a better taste than typical diner food. The Tortilla chips and salsa are satisfyingly crispy as per Lesie H. stated indeed. The mini Margarita drink is suffice for both the price at $5.00 and size as I did not want a gargantuan drink with the aftermath of a hangover. Price is reasonable for both drinks and entrees. N.B. Seating is available in the rear, Five Burro Cafe will not seat parties of five above until all individuals has arrived.
Five Burro Cafe resides in Forest Hills, Queens where my former home as I am no stranger to this hood indeed. I LOVE Austin Street as I could spend hours shopping and eating without the travel woes of the MTA. -

FOREST HILLS, NY
I have been frequenting this amazing bar/restaurant for 2 years and it is always phenominal. And when i mean frequent, i mean at least once a week. The food is always supurb and the atmosphere is nothing you can find anywhere else. The only drawback is that you will wait for a table just about any time of day. Thats not a minus though because it gives you time to sample the legendary margharita. I HATE margharitas and still i cant get enough of these drinks here!!! Classic lime is my fave, frozen and not on the rocks.

First stop on Mike B's & Monique R's UYE: The First Ever Forest Hills / Kew Gardens Caloric Overload Crawl!
I like Mexican food. I love Mexican food. Unfortunately, NYC isn't good with that stuff. Boo. But...but...5 Burro Cafe delivered with their superbly large Huevos Rancheros. $12 for a huge plate that also came with a coke - a deal from the brunch menu.
The restaurant itself looks small when you first come in but it actually extends to the back so it's in fact, spacious. They had no problem seating 8 of us in the back.
Staff were friendly and service fast.
Conveniently located on the bustling street of Austin St, only a few blocks away from the E/F/R train. -
Review from GINA H.
It's no secret I love my Yelp bishes! Every opportunity to get down and drink wicked alcoholic adult beverages with them and talk deep and dirty I grab it like a crazy ass matador in a bullring because these chica's are the salt to my margarita!
So once I found out I was having an unprecedented 5 hour layover in NYC I didn't scream and holler abuse at the airline to put me on a later flight, I EMBRACED the awesomeness that would mean I could actually spend time with my NYC Yelp bishes. But where to meet and eat? Someone suggested 5 Burro and the stage was set.
You would be forgiven for walking by this place, it is so nonpassremarkable. Inside its cute, but not terribly kitschy. Waiting at the bar slugging back on signature cocktails we were given some salsa (a tad ketchupy) and some tortilla chips. They don't seat you until everyone in your party is present so keep that in mind if you have known stragglers in your party.
Food? I'm laying myself wide open here to being review bashed but Mexican food is just not my THANG. However, having said that, the idea of trying a lobster enchilada caught my eye and together with my Yelp buddy Joan M (who I go back 15 years with) we practically ordered one of each taco and enchilada combo so we could get a good feel for the tastes. Definitely the tacos were much better than the enchiladas, the sauce on them was very smoky and overpowering. The beef (ground) was just meh really, but made up for with some great sliced steak . The Guac was good though. I love good guacamole.
Service was great (holla for letting me plug in my phone to charge!). And apparently train service is pretty close by.
In reality, a three star place, extra star for the fun factor and the randomness of sitting next to a guy from Galway at the bar. Only in NY.
