I'm a senior, believe me, good and senior. I went to Apex Wellness because I was concerned about my terrible posture, because i had fallen a couple of times, and because I thought at my age I better start getting some exercise.

I couldn't be happier with the results. My trainer, Cindy Hom, has done a wonderful job with me, and I wasn't the promising candidate. In 15 months I have lost about 15 pounds and kept it off, four (four!!) inches around my waist, actually gained a half-inch in height, and have muscles all over the place (something I never imagined was possible). My friends and family can't believe the change.

Cindy is impressive. She really knows what she's doing. I didn't imagine there was so much science and real knowledge behind what a personal trainer does, but there is. She knows all those muscles, she knows which ones need strengthening now, she knows what exercises to have me do to strengthen what needs to be strengthened, she knows how far to push me when I'm lazy and when I'm really tired and need a rest. She knows my age and takes into account. But what's really important is that she has a good sense of what I can do and makes sure that I'm always making progress, getting better at the work, and reaping all the benefits in health and well-being I can.

The gym is great. It's not one of those big places with fifty treadmills and stairmasters and all that. If it was, I would have walked out the first day. It's a calm place, small (hardly ever more than four people training at once), no one working out without a trainer. It feels comfortable and welcoming, and that was important to me. Not full of jocks, if I can put it that way.

The facilities are good. I don't know a lot about the machines that we use. They aren't complicated, mostly variations on weight things. Using simple tools (balls, medicine balls, domes, etc.) you get all the things you need.

If you live or work in near downtown (I live in North Beach) it's really convenient.

What more could anyone want?

I started working in the Financial District over 7 months ago.  That's about  how long it has been since I practiced yoga, which got me excited when I found Apex Wellness (AW) on the Yelp site.  AW is two blocks away from my office and I decided to check it out during my lunch hour.

A friend of mine was a good sport and came with me begrudgingly.  She's a yoga novice and when the class ended, she was neither impressed nor unimpressed.

The class was held in a small space.  There is a maximum of 8 people allowed in the class, but it makes for very tight quarters.  The instructor was very nice, but there was no real flow to class as Sharon R. mentioned.

I would not regularly practice yoga here; however, on days when I think I need to get back in touch with yoga, I may just pop in.

They should have classes for beginners and for advanced/intermediate students.  But given the fact that this AW isn't dedicated to just yoga practice, I've got to give them an extra star for having yoga in the first place.

In the meantime, I'm back on the hunt for a yoga studio where I can feel the flow... Om.  Namaste

Owner/Personal Trainer Phil Chen has assembled a bright, diverse group of professionals dedicated to personal training and martial arts! Most of the personal trainers have over 10 years experience.  And don't forget your lunch time Yoga classes with Lynn or Pilates after work with John Ferguson, who will help you get into proper alignment with skill & humor. An easy going, fun, yet focused environment, but not the best place for a massage as it can be pretty noisy. Changing facilities and showers available on site so you can come in for a quick work out break from work.

I have fallen in love with Apex - it is just beyond convenient and Marian Low has been fabulous to work with as a trainer. I really have discovered a new world of strength training that did not know existed before. She makes it personal, fun and convenient and is very committed to your personal success.

The pilates classes are great, too - Kyle is fantastic.

I've only been to Apex Wellness once for a lunchtime yoga class, and I was a little underwhelmed.  There were only two of us in the class so I was psyched for some hardcore teacher attention, which was nice.  And she was very nice.  But I didn't care for the routine much.  It was less flowing than I had anticipated.  And because it was a "lunch time" class, it was abbreviated, and we didn't have the time to get into poses very deeply or get very warmed up.  No post-yoga shower was needed.

The space was fine, though a little random.  It wasn't it's own room but rather a more open space off the hallway/elevators of the second floor.  And I wasn't feeling the carpet factor.

Even if I still worked in the area, I wouldn't be tapping into afternoon yoga at Apex.  At least not with any kind of regularity.

Get individualized attention at an independent gym with a focus on interesting group classes, pilates, yoga, and excellent personal trainers who provide their clients with customized approaches to fitness. It's clean, well-equipped and conveniently located in the financial district: the perfect place for those who want to go to a gym for a serious workout minus the bravado and scene atmosphere of other venues.

can't get more convenient than this place, unless i put a treadmill in my cubicle, but that's just silly.  private showers and towel service further boost the convenience factor.  facilities are small/cozy but definitely adequate.  actually, i kinda prefer it to the larger gyms where i'd probably just go on a treadmill for 45 minutes because i wouldn't want to look like an idiot trying to do anything else.

and the group of trainers to choose from is great.  they come from various backgrounds like gymnastics, dance and martial arts, while the one i chose specializes in being awesome.  and i mean awesome x 1000.  so go request him: jeremy cheung.  you have to specifically request him since most of the trainers aren't part of the gym but rather just use the space.

update ...
oh, mr. awesome no longer works out of this gym, but the rest of my review still stands. you can instead find him at http://www.yelp.com/bi...

Apex Wellness was voted to have the best trainers in San Francisco.
I have been a resident here since 2004.  When I first moved here for college, I started working out at  24 hour fitness.  My personal trainers there were flaky and inconsistent.  The manager kept switching my contract from trainer to trainer, because within 3 months, every trainer I had would get fired or transfered, except for two that now work at Apex Wellness.  Cindy Hom, President of Apex Wellness is one of the best trainers and teachers I have ever  met.  She is patient, and receptive to my needs.  I have increased my endurance, overall strength, and balance through my workouts with Cindy.  She also teaches a kickboxing class on Wednesdays.  When we kickbox, she always plays a great mix of music to keep us energized for the one hour non stop adrenaline fused kickboxing workout.  Cindy also is available for individual Choy Lay Fut Kung Fu.  This style of martial arts has helped me to develop problem solving skills in my career as an animator/illustrator/designer.
Apex Wellness offers a large variety of services from  massage therapy and Chiropractors to strength training Yoga and martial arts.
Everyone that works there is a certified professional that enjoys what they do, and is focused on providing the best service with a positive attitude.
