4th st yoga is incredible. I was back recently, after having moved out of state, and it was just as wonderful as I remembered. Barbara Voinar is, hands down, the best yoga instructor I've ever had. She has the unique ability to make your body come alive and relax into the sweetness of the pose/opening at the same time. 4th st yoga is as good as it gets.

4th Street Yoga is the best.
Beautiful space in the trees, totally convenient, with a fantastic array of teachers and workshops. I go as many times a week as I can, it nourishes and keeps me strong. -

I began my journey with yoga, and my experience with 4th street yoga in December 2008. Ive been regularly attending the Sunday morning class with Tamara Perkins.
- as a yoga beginner, Ive been going around to multiple studios, multiple teachers and Im am pleased to say the 4th street studio itself is comfortable, non pretentious, and noncompetitive, all energy which i appreciate and love!! (I also attend 2 classes at Piedmont Yoga as well)
- Tamara's Gentle Yoga for Mindfulness class is a donation based class. As an artist and performer, its extremely important to me to be able to go to a class that allows me the flexibility to pay large amounts very sporadically. some days I cant pay anything, other days I pay 50.00. I appreciate the support of the work I do with this flexibility.
- There are multiple things I appreciate about Tamara's teaching style. She is refreshingly meditative, but not in a crazy, zealot way that makes you think you are crazy if you dont understand. She opens and closes the class with a centering meditation and is consistent about keeping us checking in on our bodies, our intentions and our limits. so great!
- The meditative aspect of the class is one reason why i love the it.
- Tamara also is gentle in her corrective support of our poses. She makes me feel acknowledged and is attentive to any health needs we have. I've brought my pregnant friends here and they have loved it too!
- This class is also great for people of all sizes. Im tall and about 30 lbs overweight and feel comfortable moving through all the poses and comfortable with the diverse levels and sizes of people in the class.
-every time i leave the class - it sets me up for alignment for the day and for the week. I feel refreshed and strong without being dripping with sweat. (i like those classes to, dont get me wrong)
I LOVE the gentleness and safety of this class!!! -

I started doing yoga very recently after a long hiatus. I was afraid to return to the practice. I've been to other studios both in and outside of the bay area and I left wanting more. Either I felt that I wasn't attended to when I needed help modifying the pose, or I felt that the staff and attendees were very cold and unwelcoming. This usually made for an uncomfortable experience.
So, onto 4th Street Yoga, there isn't an ounce of pretentiousness here. The instructors are incredible. They talk you through a pose in a thorough way were you can actually grasp what it is you're supposed to do and what you're supposed to be feeling. They help you to modify the pose if you need it. They gently correct you. They are encouraging. They remember your name and special need(s).
I have NEVER been to a class and felt so comfortable and so happy. Every person in the room is present and everyone is so sweet. This studio is very special. People really care about one another. I have never met such caring, sweet and funny classmates. I am actually making friends here! Amazing!
Everything about this studio is on point.
It's not a faced paced studio. The classes I have taken here put an emphasis on slowly moving into the postures so that they are done correctly and so that you can enjoy the benefits of yoga.
I never feel like I'm rushing through a pose and I always leave feeling a lot better.
I'm so happy that I found 4th Street Yoga! -

Maybe 4th Street Yoga isn't a miracle, but by the time I leave Barbara Voinar's Gentle Yoga class, my body, soul and breath agree that something miraculous has happened. My full heart feels new.
I discovered Yoga late in my life, and only discovered true Yoga when I moved to the bay area and was welcomed by Barbara into her class.
Here's an amazing fact: in the several years since I started with Barbara, no two classes have ever been remotely the same! Yet, we can count on being centered and guided to the best of our abilities through a series of joint openers, muscle strengthening and stretching until the poses flow naturally into place. It's just exactly right.
My gentle yoga with Barbara suits me and my schedule, so I haven't sampled other teachers at 4th Street, with two exceptions: I've loved classes with Erin Collum and Beth Greenfield Rogers, and were it not for Barbara, would be thrilled to practice with either or both of them.
Oh, and the workshops! Mostly offered on weekend afternoons, they have been amazing opportunities to deepen my understanding and practice. I am continually grateful to have found 4th Street Yoga - it is a true gift. -

I have been taking classes at 4th Street Yoga for over 15 years. I have also taken classes elsewhere and have gone on various yoga retreats. When I walk into 4th Street yoga studio I feel good immediately - it is light, clean and peaceful with all the yoga props a person needs to practice - mats, blocks, straps, bolsters, blankets, etc. I take classes ongoingly with Barbara Voinar and also attend Don's Sunday 9:30am class. They are both masterful yoga instructors who have years of teaching experience. The atmosphere in every class is supportive, respectful and gentle. I like 4th St. Yoga better than any other place I've taken classes and I can't say enough good things about the studio or the teachers there. 4th Street Yoga provides a variety of classes from beginner to levels 3-4 and it's always fun to enjoy the shops and cafes on 4th St. after a good class.

If you live anywhere in the East Bay, this is the place to do yoga. When I decided to have a regular yoga practice, I literally had tried at least 20 studios before I picked 4th Street Yoga as my "home" yoga place. Barbara Voinar, who teaches the gentle yoga class as well as other levels at the studio, is extremely loved by her students, who seem to come regulary to the classes I go to. I honestly have never written a review before, but Barbara has so enriched my life that I wanted to help others who may be looking for a yoga class that they want to go to regularly.
And, all levels of fitness, body, ages, men, women, etc. come here. -

Barbara Voinar at 4th Street Yoga is simply the best! I have been attending her class regularly for more than ten years. I also have attended classes taught by a number of other yoga teachers, and although some of them have been quite good, no one has come close to Barbara -- her nurturing warmth, great smile, her precise instructions, her knowledge of the human body, her spirituality. Each week is completely different - during the entire time I have been attending Barbara's classes, no two classes have ever been the same. I never fail to leave her class feeling physically and spiritually rejuvenated.

4th Street Yoga is the original - they were around way before there was a yoga studio on every corner. I have been coming here for many years and 4th Street Yoga has healed and seen me through so many transitions when I needed it most. Prenatal and postnatal yoga with Barbara (such sweet memories - how would I have done it without her!), kids yoga with Beth (turned my 12 month old into an early yogini, and enjoyed by my older kids for years - the highlight of our weeks), and now grown-up delicious caring yoga with Beth. If you are looking for guidance from experienced teachers, knowledgable about the body at every age/state/level of experience - you've come to the right place. They are not 27 year old new graduates of teacher training programs that push you into poses you shouldn't do - but their decades of experience also enhance an advanced practice. And where else can you practice with trees fluttering in the windows and go out afterward to O'Chame, Tacubaya or Sketch? 4th Street Yoga is where it's at.
