Having been to 4th Street Bar and Grill a few times for pre-movie drinks and snacks, I finally got around to checking it out at a lunch hour when one of my co-workers mentioned it. We headed on over and I was looking forward to trying some actual food there.

First off, I really don't like the arrangement they have for lunch hours. You can seat yourself (which is fine) but you have to go up to the bar and order, similar to a cafe... not a sit-down restaurant. Yeah, it's a sports bar/pub, but I've never seen service done like this. To further confuse the service, I didn't see any obvious signs or notices that you ordered like this at lunch hour. We sat at our table for five minutes before the bar guy came over and told us we had to get in line to order.

Second, food came out at different times. This is probably tied directly to the method of ordering, where no one can tell that it's all together at the same table, but it's a bit disconcerting when one person has their meal and no one else at the table does. If I wanted a food court atmosphere of dining, I'd go to the food court, not a restaurant.

Third, as typical to most pubs and sports bars, not a lot of options for veg*ns.  Pizza, salad, eggplant burger and grilled cheese are pretty much your options. There's a few appetizers that are also available, but yeah... not a lot to pick from. I keep my expectations low in this area generally since hey, it's a sports bar. What are they known for? Wings and beer.

The ordering method aside, our food came pretty fast and the server was extremely friendly and nice. Despite it being lunch time, the pub is pretty quiet, although I suspect it gets a lot louder and crazier when there's a game on. I barely noticed the TVs that were scattered around.

The food is decent, typical bar/pub fare. You get a good size amount for the price you pay. When I've been here for drinks, the options are pretty bland and boring, but I suspect you'd go here for beer, not mixed cocktails.

I'm more than happy to stop in for drinks and conversation prior to a movie (this is right across the street from the Metreon). Lunch, not too sure I'll be up for going back on a regular basis, but it's a good option to check out if you're in the area and looking for pub fare.

A friend wanted to catch up and catch the game and had recommended 4th Street Bar and Grill over Jillians. Upon entering, one finds a seat at their own convenience and plops their booty down. Menu is presented, order food and/or drinks and stare mindlessly at the multiple televisions while you try to have a deep and thoughtful conversation.

Rogue Dead Guy was the drink that caught my eye and with each sip had a nice bite. I thought that evening was going to be good if they had food as good as that beer.

Loaded Fries was simply semi crispy steak fries topped with pulled pork, pepper jack cheese, and jalapeno that sounded good on paper. However, I was disappointed because it was just layers of ingredients that didn't mesh as well as I hoped for. The cheese didn't bind the meat and fries like typical carne asada fries and a fork didn't help whatsoever.

Jalapeno Poppers were nothing to rave about as I felt like I needed more bar food while I watch the game.

Overall the drink choice was good, but the food brought down my experience to mediocre. I did enjoy the multiple televisions and could watch multiple games, but this is the type of bar I'd go to if I was in the area only. Bartenders were nice and attentive to our needs.

Mmmm cool sports bar vibe on a Friday night when everyone around is happy to be off work for the weekend.

Great beers. The food looked like regular bar food so I would probably go elsewhere for a good meal (so much to choose from in the area), definitely a cool first stop right off the Powell Bart Station

First off I think the food is great. I came with my son and parents and I disagree with it not being family or kid friendly. It was very kid friendly, and when my youngster started to get ancey, one of the staff happily changed one of the channels on tv to cartoons to make him happy, that was much appreciated. The food was great! I loved the fries and the beef salad also the pizzas were very good and that was my sons favorite. Since I was visiting from out of town, It was nice to go to a place that was affordable but also convenient because were downtown and also accommodating. Also the wide variety of beers was really cool and made it fun to try something new. We went , i think, around the time it opened and I think if you have kids its the best time to go because its really mellow and its ok if your kid might be a little loud. Also there is the beautiful Yerba Buena Gardens across the street which has a children's discovery museum and a really cool urban playground. It may be weird that you have to go to the bar to order but its a small price to pay compared to the rest of what the restaurant has to offer. great time great food kid friendly and if you want to go out at night and have your adult time its good for that too.

Yeah the food isnt super, and the prices are a bit higher than other smaller junk pubs, but christ, it is unbelievably difficult to find a bar in this area which shows more than just the local teams.  for some bars, even those with directv, it is too hard to put on nbcsports to watch a little hockey even with the PLAYOFFS on tv!  ridiculous  *cough* steff's *cough*.  look, its big and clean, lots of seating, spacious, acceptable noise level, good enough food and they have a lot of tvs with more than just the local teams.  im from philadelphia and was able to catch the phils on mlb network.

My wife and I were trying to find a place to eat while shopping around the city. We had a great experience. Our waiter was very good and fast. The menu had typical bar foods such as burgers, fries, etc. I got the burger with Parmesan fries (a must) and my wife got the grilled cheese with fries. The fries portion of the meal is huge, so watch out. The beer list goes on and on with foreign and local beer.
I'm surprised with some of the other reviews. First of all, this is San Francisco, so I don't expect the food to be dirt cheap. Second, this is a sport's bar. People shouldn't expect 5-star food in a sport's bar.

Which sports bar allows a private party on one of the biggest sports nights (BCS Championship) of the year?  Yes, you're right; it's the 4th Street Bar & Grill.   So, if you're into snooty sports bars, oxymoron I know, then don't just walk over..., but run over (somebody?) to Fourth and Mission Streets.

I kind of have mixed feelings about this place.

    LIKES:
    - It's a casual all American sports bar
    - Convenient location (right outside the Metreon, so we walked over after our movie)
    - Food was decent - I had the margarita pizza (good size and gooey cheese)
    - Bathrooms are clean
    - Decent size - it'd be a nice place to watch a game

    DISLIKES:
    - Can be a bit pricey
    - The service was ok.  I asked for a recommendation, and our waiter was not helpful at all.  "Everything is really good."
    - I wanted cider, and the one our waiter recommended didn't taste very good (wish I remembered the name so I don't get it again)

I haven't experienced anything too demeaning here, so this place will be a neutral 3 stars for me.

I went for a beer and some bar food after work one day. I ordered a beer and the loaded french fries.

The fries were dumped in BBQ pork, jalepenos and cheese, but it just tasted like they made this app by throwing together a a bunch of leftover kitchen items. It just didn't go together well. The beer was flat, and it was just a boring place to be at.

Sure they have a crap-ton of TVs, but they're all tiny and some are burned out. I suggest watching the game or grabbing a beer elsewhere.

I have to show this place some love!

Come on now, its a sports bar. For what it's worth, 4th Street Bar & Grill has all you need to kick back, watch a game, have some munchies and a brewksy.

The fries were yummy and beers on tap were to my liking.

Service wasn't bad on a Friday afternoon. Especially during happy hour!

Great location, its bart accessible and near everything! Movies, shopping, and on your way home from work!

This place has been going downhill lately. It used to be a decent place to pop into for some fish and chips during happy hour, but lately the quality has taken a dive.

It's the little stuff--they stopped giving coleslaw, the fish was cooked in oil that was too high so the outside was burnt but the inside was still raw. Wish so many places for good fish and chips in SF I won't be returning.

The place is pretty decent. We came here after our search for a decent place to watch football. The place had good options and had place to sit. The seats were also very comfy and they rotated towards the different tvs.

The guys got a bucket of beer which was a good option for them cuz the beer stayed cold. We also ordered two plates of fries which were good because they were thin and light but the ketchup they provided tasted funky. It felt like it was mixed with steak sauce.

The service was a little peculiar as well because our server kept telling us to put the menu on it's stand instead of just on the table. Service could be better.

But all in all, we found a good place to watch some football and have some snacks.

First of all, this place was a last minute destination for us because of an emergency need to watch the Sharks' opening game. We yelped the nearest sports bar with decent food closest to Union Square and yelp directed us here. Due to fleet week, the place was packed with naval officers and of course sports junkies. Although it was busy, we were seated quite promptly and the waiter put the Sharks on two tvs closest to our table. Now that's what I call service!

Since it is a sports bar, don't expect much from the food. The menu is not much to look at, as you are limited to a few choices of basic burgers. I ordered the 38 north chicken breast with truffled parmesan fries. I enjoyed the fries more than anything! The chicken burger was dry, bland, and disgusting.

The atmosphere is on hit when it comes to watching football, hockey, basketball, or any other sport. But the food is bleh. On a positive note, our waiter was real sweet and kind.

Food's mediocre. I used to go there before I came in for a football game and after eating my food the tall bald bartender told me I had to order something else or go. I looked around, there was nobody waiting, and I couldn't order a beer because I was on break from work. He didn't say anything to anybody else at the bar who had stopped ordering. Really cruddy move, almost talked to the manager but just decided to stop coming. No hospitality, it's a tourist bar.

    This place is okay.

I certainly wouldn't seek it out, but if I had friends staying in a hotel near the area (which was the case when I stopped in) I wouldn't be opposed to coming back for a quick bite to eat & a beer.

They don't have much of a selection in terms of food, but they do in terms of beer (unfortunately after three days of debauchery I could only manage to suck down a diet Pepsi beverage wise).  I had the mushroom & arugula pizza to eat.  It wasn't bad, except for the fact that it was doused in olive oil.  I thought it was greasy as it is, but if I weren't hungover it would have been WAY too greasy.

There's quite a bit of seating both at the bar and the surrounding area.  The service isn't that great, though.  They place was understaffed when I was there and our waitress was kind of flustered.  I will cut her some slack though because at least she was aware of how slow she was and wasn't oblivious (she was covering quite a bit of tables so perhaps someone called in sick).

4th St. Bar is definitely in a more touristy area, and like I said, I wouldn't seek it out, but it's A-OK nonetheless.

    Horrible.

I came in at lunch on a weekday with a couple of coworkers. We were pretty hungry and excited because we heard there were yummy wings here.

30 minutes later... (including the wait in line and wait for food)

Nope. These "Kung Pao Wings" were awful -- room temperature, drenched in sweet sauce, and dry and flavorless on the inside. Essentially it's crappy Chinese food. My burger was also dry, and it was way overcooked.

I admit it would have been okay if it weren't ridiculously overpriced, however it was $4 for a soda, $6 for fries, $13 for a shitty Caesar salad or a burger.

Regarding the service -- there was none. We had to get our food and drinks from the bar. When ordering I had asked for my burger without a bun and the server flat out refused -- not a polite "Sorry" but "No we don't do that." Thanks guy. He has a balding head by the way if you want to say hello.

Avoid this place like the plague and tell your conference goer friends visiting Moscone to steer clear as well. We all deserve a better restaurant here.

This is a pretty decent sports bar. They have tons of tvs with pretty much every game that's playing that night. They have good specialty beers on the menu and have a pretty well-stocked bar. Unfortunately, the food and drinks are decent but overpriced and the bartenders are relatively unfriendly. The general vibe of the workers is that everyone hates their job.

4th Street Bar and Grill serves Pliny the Elder, but also serves french fries that looked/tasted like they were previously frozen.  Met up with a couple of friends for drinks here on a lazy Sunday.  It's convenient to downtown and probably gets pretty lively for big sporting events.  The house brew (4th Street Blonde) is decent.  I think it would be fun to come back for something like a Giants game!

Oh my freaking jeebers. If there was another sports bar or even Barney paying a visit next door, I would skip 4th Street and head over there.

My boyfriend and I came here to relax; we ordered the Korean quesadilla, mushroom flat bread pizza and truffled parmesan fries. When the food came, I was surprised to see the food on plates made of fallen leaves from...somewhere...and I was shocked by the waiter handing us Chinet plates the size of a coaster thinking that was going to hold all my food.

I was already having a semi bad day and the waiter (Don C.) didn't make it any better. He first forgets our utensils and makes an attempt to apologize by saying "my bad" and later starts shouting across the restaurant at his friends who are outside of the restaurant doors trying to tell them to come in. If that wasn't the last strike, having him singing out loud while serving us and walking around really squished the last of my patience with him.

I'm never coming back again. This place is lucky the Marriott is right next door.

When I was lucky to get in,  I had the flat bread pecorino cheese mushroom (pizza?) and it was really good.  A nice size for one person;  I actually took 1 third to go.  The salads are good. The service was really friendly.  They let me pay for the alcohol separately and they were accommodating to food allergy questions and requests.

This place basically exists because it is located in a heavily-trafficked tourist spot near the Moscone. The prices are very high, the bar is small, and the service was minimal.

Basically, you order at the bar and then they call your number. You go grab your food, sit down, and eat. There's not a lot of atmosphere despite the 57 TVs lining the walls trying to give the place a 'sports bar' vibe.

The beer selection is excellent though (Rogue Dead Guy was my choice) but the food was just OK.

They have great beer on tap and the food service is right on time.  I't never been super crowded and I've always had a warm welcome from the bartender.  Sure, it smells like a bleach mop when you walk in, but CLEAN IS IN, right?

My godsister used to live in the city and during gametime, this would be the compromised place to have dinner and drinks.  I've been here a few times and it's definitely not my top choice of sports bars.

Food is expensive and not even all that great.  They do pitchers, which is a plus.

Good amount of decent-sized TVs though which is the reason why it gets 2 stars versus 1.

I'm going to consider this review incomplete for now. I came here with my friend before going to a concert at The Warfield. I ordered the Philly Cheesesteak sandwich which turned out to be a mess. The bottom piece of bread became extremely soggy which led to  many of the contents of the actual sandwich falling out.

To drink, my friend and I ordered a pitcher of the Big Daddy beer which was pretty good.

This place gets one star just for their rotating door entrance which I got my friend stuck in as we left. That was a good laugh.

I'll be back try a different menu item in the future.

1st time: My roomies and I were overwhelmed by the whack crowd and slow service at the bar. Plus the food was incredibly over-priced so we decided to find a different eatery. Almost $12 for a burger?! AT A SPORTS BAR OF ALL PLACES?! Come on.

2nd time: Boyfriend insisted we have our friends meet up here to watch the game...fun atmosphere, but again slow service at the bar. It was incredibly...busy or not this place sucks.

3rd time: Too lazy to walk anywhere else so my boyfriend and I settled for here. This time we had a great waiter- Don who served us our beers promptly. Plus it was Two's-Days , meaning two pints for $10. Things were looking up and we even ordered a basket of garlic fries. The amount of fries was massive and I was glad to get the $7 worth. However, as I began to eat, I was disappointed by the lack of flavor. I was better off ordering regular fries.

2/3 bad experience? MEH me thinks not for this place...

Came in here after my car broke down in the middle of San Francisco on a Saturday. It's your typical sports bar with tons of flat screens. They also have a pretty big space so i would say that it's good for big parties. The location is idea, right on the corner on 4th and mission, couple blocks way from union square.

The drinks are priced accodingly but i agree, the food was way too expensive, a chicken sandwich will run you around $13 bucks. We had an order of their Buffalo Wings with our drinks and they were pretty darn spicy! I l am a huge fan of spicy foods but  even I was begging for water.

This place was just average IMO, except for the cool bartender who chatted up with us without being over bearing. Just the right amount of company- ask for Kim when you go, she pours really stiff drinks if that's your thing.

Atmosphere: 4 - It's a sports bar. There are TVs everywhere.
Taste: 4 - Chili fries and wings were good. Nachos were OK.
Value: 4 - Happy Hour M-F from 4-6. Otherwise, go for the "Mystery" bucket (6 bottles of random beer), which I think was around $3 per bottle.
Service: 5 - Waitress came around often to check on us, and the food came out pretty quickly.
Avg: 4.25 - Good place to watch a game, especially during happy hour.
