I was on a HUGE burger fix yesterday, and saw that this place was supposed to have some tasty meat patties. OH MAN. YES. YES THEY DO.
I got the bacon cheeseburger with barbeque sauce added, and my buddy got God's own burger. Jeez, that stuff is wonderful! I felt like such a manly man- sitting there, eating my delicious manly burger, drinking my manly Newcastle, watching manly extreme sports on the manly flatscreen TV. MANLY. (I had to paint my nails when we got home, just to remind myself that in fact, I'm a girly girl!)
It's definitely a dive, but it's a dive with delicious burgers, so I lurvz it .
Go.
Eat.
Manly.
I haven't been in this area in some time, but was aching for a good burger last night. Oooohhh and did I get lucky--their God's own burger (swiss cheeseburger) is only $4.25 on Wednesdays! How awesome is that?
Well, let me tell you--the burger is better than I remembered. It's not just a generic grilled burger (not saying that those aren't rather tasty anyway) but their burger is full of flavor. You really do taste the garlic in every bite--heaven.
Oh and the girl behind the bar (i forgot her name!)--she's awesome! Everything came out so quickly and she brought me a refill on my diet coke before I was even half way through.
I think i'm going to be regular on Wednesdays.

I never stepped into this place in all of my years as a forty-niner. I guess I just kind of dismissed this place as a shitty frat bar. I'm not sure why or how we ended up here one night, but I was so off the mark. D ordered the Jesus Burger and I had the corned beef sandwich. It's rare when I like his dish more than mine, but I wanted to trade my dish with his as soon as I had a bite of that juicy burger. I should have known. If it's good enough for Jesus, it has got to be pretty damn good. Jesus knows his burgers.
The waitress was really sweet and attentive despite the fact that she was doing it all that night (grilling the burgers, serving the drinks and food, and cleaning up). Our waitress gave us some frequent buyer cards. I'm sure we'll be making good use out of them.

The 49 is a five star dive bar . They have been serving up beer in a dimmly lighted shack off pch and bellflower since my parents attended CSULB. If you and some friends are looking for a place to play pool ,eat peanuts ,with very welcoming bartenders, hit up the 49. You wont be dissapointed.

I went on a weekday and the place was dead. Total dive bar but they have some nice plasmas and the burgers are nice. It was strange they didn't have fried (chips instead) but I guess dive bars make their own rules.
Best burgers in Long Beach? Not hardly.
All of their food is prepared outside on a grill, and while my burger had a promising amount of delicious char, it was fairly overdone and a consistent grey color throughout. Perhaps this was a fluke, and normally they cook their burgers more on the medium side of the spectrum, but I have a feeling that the over-done-ness of this burger was due to the fact that they don't have a kitchen and therefore must nuke food to prevent it from making you sick.
Also, the lack of fries is a real bummer, and for a bar that only serves beer and wine, their beer selection was limited to the usual crappy American beers and a few bottled imports, as well as Newcastle on tap.
Don't get me wrong, after some beer, even a overdone charred burger tastes pretty damn fantastic, and beats out a flat grill burger any day.
My search for the true best burger in Long Beach continues.

Pretty much the best burger in Long Beach. Beer selection is just crappy domestics...but I haven't been there in a while, maybe they upgraded?
Good place to play pool. Not a good place to feel good about your post-25 year old age. This is a college bar and is full of college students. If you're no longer in college, prepare to feel like a creepy old man.
Made a random and very spontaneous pit stop here, with my friend Candace in between Christmas errands.....we were both running 2 hours behind already, so we said "fuck it".
I really wanted to try the burgers with her, since she's the girl that smuggled fresh meat home from her family's farm in Oklahoma. She knows her shit. And the Burgers here def. agreed with both of us. They Pre season the meat with butter, minced garlic, and Worcester sauce.
The bartender does not think I can win the triple bypass challenge, but I think they have 200 dollars with my name on it.

The problem with eating healthy and getting your recommended 5 to 9 servings of fruit and vegetables each day lately is that your stomach tends to rebel when you decide to wolf down a bag of potato chips followed by a Redneck-Mother-Burger with bacon and extra sauce and a Newcastle.
Goddamnit! What happened to my cast iron stomach? What happened to the garbage-disposal days of eating whatever came to mind? What happened to being able to eat a 1000-calorie burger and still be hungry for 2000 more calories? I guess it's time to hang up the false teeth; my days are numbered.
Aside from tasty hamburgers, the other good thing about the Tavern is that you can see the Laker girls in High Definition. Buttocks so juicy you just want to sink your teeth into them get you salivating...which, of course, may be the reason I ate my burger a little too quickly instead of slowly savoring the combination of a 1/3 pound pattie mixed with onions and worcestershire, cheddar cheese, crunchy bacon, tangy barbecue sauce, red onions, lettuce, tomatoes, and pickles on an excellent spongy bun. Damn those Laker girls--but not really.
I haven't tried all the burgers in town so I can't really do a proper comparison. I will say, however, that for a fat, messy, taste-explosion of a burger, this place ranks pretty high. Mmm, Laker girls....

I'm a bad 49er. It's been over 10 years since I graduated from CSULB, but the other night was the first time I ever made it to the 49er Tavern. I was finally lured in by the "best burger in Long Beach" gloss. Luckily, coincidentally both Vince and I were appropriately garbed in our CSULB threads -- but this is the type of place where people proudly sport their LBSU gear, even though the school's been in the CSU system for well over 20 years now.
I recommend the 49er Tavern for a real no-frills bar. It's small, it's dark, it's dirty, the wood paneling is peeling off the ceiling, peanut shells are on the ground, and only basic beer and wine are served. But the bartender is friendly, the crowd is locals, and the burgers and sandwiches are legendary. It's refreshing in its honesty. There's a pool table and a dart board, a juke box, and 3 large HD TVs for your entertainment pleasure. Honestly if I were still a college student this place would probably scare the hell out of me, but I'm old enough to appreciate it now.
I had the Redneck Mother Burger, and it was cooked just like my family used to make at home - the ground beef is mashed with chopped garlic and worcestershire sauce, and it's grilled at a nice medium. There's no real kitchen here, just the backyard grill, so there are no fries or anything like that - just a bag of original Lay's potato chips. The prices are super reasonable - my burger was $6 and well worth it. There are about 6-8 kinds of burgers and about 6-8 kinds of sandwiches, and that's it. Veggie patties are also available, but I didn't try one this time. The Redneck burger that I got came with BBQ sauce and cheddar - my only complaint is that dinner was over too quickly, since I devoured the burger in a few minutes. I didn't know what to do with myself for the rest of the evening.
I don't see myself rushing back anytime soon, but it was good to have finally tried it. There are other burgers in Long Beach I like just as well or better, but this is definitely on the list.

I went here today with a few friends on my break because i read the reviews and decided to try it. Right next to school, yet so inconvenient.
First off, its really hard to get to the place, no left turns ANYWHERE, and second off, theres barely any parking!
As we walked into the tavern, my friend mentions that shes scared. haha. Yes, it takes a bit of getting use to in order to be comfortable in this place. Its dark, its cramp, it was probably a hip place back in the day...but since then, God's granted us the talent to do so much better with interior and exterior design...why not use it?
Theres a pool table, a few arcade games, and a bar...no kitchen. Its basically a backyard grill and pub. Service was decent, the server, an older gentleman, seemed really frazzled, bit stressed out i suppose...but the owner (who was surprisingly younger) was really nice.
My friends had the God's own Cheeseburger and didn't exactly "love" their food...."it's food...and i'm hungry," they said
I had the Redneck-Mother-Burger...I thought it was pretty good. Best burger i've had so far in Long Beach, thats for sure. EXTREMELY messy! Don't wear anything you wouldnt want to get stains on! 5 stars for my burger...3 for the tavern.
I'd definitely come back for the burgers....but i'm not quite sure if i'll be comfortable eating there, maybe it'll take a bit more of getting use to.

Went to 49'rs last night for the Cowboys/Packers game and it was PACKED. Apparently not all game nights are as packed but this specific game wasn't shown on a lot of cable networks I guess.
$3 PBR special which I guess they have all the time (they ran out of schooners and just served in plastic instead which wasn't quite as much as a schooner but oh well)! AMAZING Pendajo Burger...relleno chili, pepper jack cheese, attitude sauce (spicy mustard) and a hot pepper on the side....absolutely mouth watering. I LOVE ketchup on burgers and I didn't even THINK about it.
The crowd's pretty young but everyone (both sides of fans) got along and joked around with everyone so that was awesome! A good mix of people!
I will definitely return!
I believe the bartender's name was Jason....awesome guy....really cool...thanked everyone for coming out and asked everyone to come back....great guy!

Found this place on Yelp, which has never disappointed so far. But this time I walked in, hesitated, and thought.... I don't know about this place.....
I actually contemplated walking out. We were primarily going for burgers, not drinks, and when I saw that they don't have a kitchen I came really close to leaving. We were so hungry though, and wanted to trust in my fellow yelpers. I am so glad we stayed.
Seriously, one of the best burgers I've ever had! The meat was great, flavor and combinations of toppings are awesome, it was just a great burger all around! I had the pendejo burger and my man had the bacon cheeseburger. They were both amazing. I was disappointed that there were no fries on the menu, they only serve with potato chips. But when the meals came out and we ate, it really was the perfect combination! I wouldn't change a thing.
Also, have to mention the awesome selection of beers and super reasonable prices on everything!
The only complaint I have about this place is the first time we went there the music was WAY too loud, which really irritated me. But the other times it has been fine.
I will end by saying here what I tell my friends when I take them to this place. "You're going to walk in and think about leaving - but just trust me, this is kick-ass food."

Awww... I just read Holly T.'s review and it brought back so many warm and fuzzy memories of my undergrad years at CSULB.
The 49'rs Tavern was the perfect off campus dive bar to hit up for a few beers, a game of pool, some peanuts and some fun tunes on the jukebox. Sometimes you just had to get away from the Nugget and get the heck away from campus (well at least across the street from it)
My fondest memory of this place was when 5 of us went and apart from 2 other patrons and the bartender we were the only ones there! I was able to program the jukebox to play Sublime's cover of Marley's Trenchtown Rock over and over, play pool (which I hate doing because I suck) and spill beer without being scowled at by the bartender (because I'm a clumsy dork).
Many a times during my grad school years I would drive by the 49'rs
Tavern and wish I could rewind to those care free undergrad years!

What can I say that has not already been said?
Seriously, the most amazing burgers EVER, not just "in town." I was skeptical when I saw the sign. An expert such as myself would beed to investigate such a claim. $3 PBR schooners plus the most freakin amazing burger I have ever had equals the most satisfied customer!
Keep up the good work!

Wanted to meet up with some friends on a sat night and she told us to meet her at the Tavern...never went to this place but drove by it all the time..
I first walked in and thought "Dirty ass floor is going to mess up my shoes", then realize that the dirtiness is from the roasted peanuts you throw on the floor!! How cool is that! and their free!!
The bartender was hella cool!! Talking to all the patrons like people and not like customers which I love!! Just being real!
Not much seating, but it eventually works out. There were a few screens around the place, nice to catch a game...Two pool tables which you play on for free!!!! I'm totally enjoying all this free stuff! We got 6 big schooners for around 30 bucks which is pretty good, I think!
Will be coming back again shortly!!

Hah I drove to Long Beach during a 1 day layover in my flight! This place was amazing and had a great college feeling to it. The burgers were phenomenal
After a couple of visits and many a schooners, i realized tonight that i like this place, i really do. as my pal tom put it, its kinda like joe jost's, but for the younger crowd. the tavern appears to attract a fairly youthful population on the weekends - most likely related to the nearby college campus. during the day, you'll find a lot of old-timers shootin' the shit, watching sports and what not. one thing i greatly appreciate is the bartender(s), simply paying attention to who's who. by my second visit, it was like, "okay, i saw you last week, what do you want?" i swear the same fuckin' dood at the red room has checked my ID like 27 damn times already! the guys here are real fucking cool!
Tonight, i played over an hour of free pool (sat & sun), drank lots of good beer (i.e., blue moon, pabst, miller - in no particular order), and had a damn good time. not overcrowded for a sat night, no sloppy fucks hangin' on me or my friends, and best of all, no DUI on the way home... kidding, i ride my bike... safely.
So yeah, there's a couple a things i would change about this place, but really they're just small complaints. a number of bright bulbs that need to go for obvious reasons - nobody likes to be blasted in the face with crude incandescent light. even a change to 25 watts would do... and there's been a few times i've wanted to pull the plug on their generic excuse for a juke box. its own of those touch screen, today's hits, yesterday's favorites sorts that only allows you to choose one song per album, typically "that one hit." kinda weak but i can deal...
Take note all ye whiskey hounds and tequila guzzlers, the tavern serves beer only, no spirits whatsoever... that is, unless you're a good lookin' gal who is kindly offered the secret stash, on the house - i saw this tonight.
Free peanuts, free pretzels, free hypertension... i can dig it.
Update: finally tried their burger, the 1/2 lb hey zeus, and it lives!!! best burger ive ever had, no exaggeration! next stop - triple by-pass challenge. i could use the money...

This burger made my day! What a find! After a crap-ass day at work and finding out that our alternate burger and beer plans (beachwood BBQ) had not panned out, we read some reviews and headed over.
Once inside, we were pleased to see it relatively empty, with a few regulars hanging out and some gents behind the bar. Also damn pleased to see an IPA on draft- and in a frosty 20 oz schooner for 5.50.
We ordered a bacon burger and a pendejo burger. Both were juicy, moist and well seasoned. The bacon burger was topped with lettuce, cheddar cheese, onions, tomato, and some delicious mayo-based sauce. The pendejo- muy caliente indeed! Same patty topped with the veggie fixins- but with Jalapeno jack, ortega chile and some sort of hot sauce. My lips were a' burnin. Went perfect with an ice cold IPA. They were messy- I must have used close to 10 napkins.
The service was great, jukebox was pretty good, too. Plus they gave us these cards where if you buy 5 burgers you get the 6th free. We are only in the LBC for another week, but we just might try and go for our free burgers.

49ers long beach style....
Quality: Local old style bar. Operated by college aged workers. Didn't eat here so cant really comment on the food.
Quantity: I just had their beer on tab and their free roasted peanuts... yummy
Price: They sell pitchers for cheap. I forget the price but it was surprisingly priced well.
Atmosphere: Cozy little place. The picture on this site s pretty much the place. Has a bar area with a row of stools and a couple of bench tables. There is a back room for pool and darts. In the bar area they have about 3-4 flat screen of worthy size. The people are locals and more youthful that joe's jost.
Overall: I came in thinking this was a San Francisco 49er's chapter and but was corrected that it was the long beach miners. But I enjoyed watching my chargers play and would come again when I wanna walk to watch some sports.

After 4 yrs of driving by here and a few good comments from fellow yelpers, I finally decided to give it a whirl.
Who knew a place like that could dish out such a tasty burger? Their burger is almost exactly the way I'd imagine a backyard BBQ burger should taste like.
Good service, a great burger, will definitely come back!

You have to try the burgers here. I don't quite understand how a dive bar of this magnitude can produce the burgers that they do, but these are probably the best burgers I've ever had.
The tavern itself is a standard dive bar with sawdust on the floor, pool tables and benches. There is no kitchen that I can see. However, they make their burgers on a grill in the back of the bar, and these are the most decadent, tastiest burgers I have ever had.

God's Own Cheeseburger is the way to go. Somebody mentioned the spicy sauce on the Pendejo burger, it is called 'Tude sauce (as in attitude). The food has always been awesome, but under the new management, te place has made many necessary improvements. Throw your free peanut's shells on the floor! The only reason it is getting 5 stars is because I can't give it 6!

UPDATE: 2/1/2008 - It's Official!! I have now tried every burger on the 49'rs menu. My god I might get as big as the "other Elvis".
Wuss Burger - pretty high up there, but I could feel my arteries clogging while I was eating it. Just how much fat are you getting with a ham & cheese sandwich attached to a hamburger? LOL!!
Pendejo Burger - had this one last night and I think it is my favorite. I might have to go back and do some more surveying though.

ORIGINAL REVIEW:
5 star burgers. Oh my.
I did a search under 49r and thought I was going to be the "first to review" this place, but lo and behold Dixie beat me to it.
We started today by running into friends at Hot Java. They said "We are having burgers at 49rs today, you GOTTA taste these things". OOOH? what? burger? tasty yummy burgers on a Sunday afternoon? Alright!
This is a dark corner bar I've driven by but never had any desire to visit. I think it might be a college spot being so close to Cal State LB. Who cares?!! The story is that they used to serve food, they stopped, and then they started again (at least what I was told). It doesn't matter really, if you want a killer burger, please find your way here and ignore the "looks" inside and out.
There's a tiny space for the cook to store hamburger buns, toaster oven and the like. You make your order at the bar and the cook disappears outside to BBQ your burger "LIVE". We split a Bacon Burger and WOW it was simple yet amazing. Just all the right components (which is usually what makes your best burger), soft bun, grilled burger, Worchestershire, garlic, mayo, yay yay yay!!
This is one of those "best kept secrets" that might get found out, and then the one guy with 1 bbq grill will not be enough to keep up with the crowd and then they'll quit altogether. Hey, wait! Maybe that is what happened before?! Pure speculation.
They don't serve fries. Hell, where would they fry-thy-fry? There is no kitchen, just a small counter dammit! It does not matter. This is the best burger I've had in a long time and you can see by my reviews that I was pointed (by yelpsters) to Volcano Burgers because they had that "grilled taste". I wasn't impressed. 49rs Tavern IS a grilled burger, on a goddamm grill! Outside no less! Bobby Flay thinks he is BBQ king? No way! The guy BBQ'in at this place IS what Bobby Flay PRETENDs to be.
I say go for the Bacon Burger (if you like BBQ-ish smoky burgers) or do whatever - they also make a mean chicken sandwich from what I've heard.
20 oz Scooners of Newcastle are $5.50. Bring your belly ready for some bbq lovin'.
UPDATE 12/2007 :::
If I could give 49'rs 10 stars I would. DANG this time I tried the "Big Wuss" burger, a burger with ham & swiss cheese thrown in for good measure. It was absolutely one of the best tasting, juiciest burgers I've had in a long time. I am salivating writing this, no joke. I think the Big Wuss is my new favorite. Ahhhh. AHHHHHHHHHHH!!

Damn good burgers!
I mean -- I'm salivating just thinking about all that grilled, garlicy, worcestershire-y goodness! YUM!
My husband always complains about their lack of french fries (his suggestion was for them to get one of those table top "air fryers") but personally, I don't care. I'm always so wrapped up in my burger that I'm FULL by the time I realize there's no fries.
They have a fine selection of booze - no problems there.
I've NEVER had bad service here -- some bars have bartenders that make you feel like you don't belong. But despite the rough appearance of this place, it's always very friendly here.
My only complaint (and it's not enough to ding them on stars) is that when we went last time they had different buns on the burgers. They were more kaiser-roll-like & I prefered the old classic sesame bun they'd had before. I hope they switched back.
Hmmmm maybe I'll eat here tomorrow....
Went here once on the the recommendation of my girlfriend who worked nearby. I ordered the triple bypass and the burger is aptly named. It was cooked to order on a grill out back and tasted great. I wholeheartedly agree with the other two reviewers
