Best breakfast/ lunch place in Gainesville. It's always crowded--a sure sign that the food is good. Best ruben sandwich in town.

Went here based on Yelp recommendations, it was good but nothing amazing stuck out.
Service was good, waitresses were very friendly and helpful. Place is clean and a nice little local diner atmosphere.
I ordered 2 eggs and corned beef hash, because it was homemade and I am a huge fan of hash. I also got a biscuit and gravy (another thing I judge breakfast places by besides their hash) and had to try a sweet potato pancake (the waitress was nice enough to get me just a silver-dollar sized one rather than a whole huge pancake).
The eggs were cooked perfectly, but the hash was disappointing. Yes it was homemade, but very bland. Barely had any flavor from the pickling/corning spices and I had to add salt. I've been on a nearly salt-free diet, so you'd think I would be very sensitive to any salt, so it says something when I have to go out of my way to add salt to give it some flavor (and I never salted food when I wasn't on diet).
The biscuit was delicious, large, fluffy and a great buttermilk flavor with a nice crust on top. The gravy however was sadly lacking in flavor and meat. The only flavor besides milk I could taste was when I bit into a small chunk of sausage. It wasn't very thick and just disappointing. Not the worst I've had but definitely not the best. A 4 out of 10.
The sweet potato pancake was exactly what you'd expect. It was on the line of the pumpkin muffins I make - sweet and moist, slightly creamy/chewy with a nice sweet-spicy flavor. I slathered a ton of butter on it and didn't even need syrup.
Overall, it was good, fair prices, nice sized portions, and friendly staff. Not somewhere I'd say "Oh, I'm in Gainesville, MUST go here!" but if we were looking for a decent breakfast, I'd suggest it. -

I had to give 43rd St. a second visit before reviewing them, since I was hungover the first time. Everyone knows you can't successfully rate something when hungover, since inhibitions and nutrition usually go out the window.
So on this second visit, I decided to even order the same food which was a country fried steak breakfast. It might be a little heavy for some tastes, but man it's good. I can safely say the hangover had absolutely no effect on this. The breading is awesome and whatever they season it with is perfect. Country fried steak isn't something I eat a lot of, but if I am ever craving it I will definitely eat it here. Nothing else really stands out so far, even though it has been consistent enough. Toast is basic. Grits are bland(until you butter and salt them yourself). Eggs are typical, though always cooked as ordered. On this second visit my wife got a California chicken sandwich and it was surprisingly good too. Though known for breakfast, I wouldn't hesitate to order lunch here. But at the same time, I won't come out of my way to do so.
Atmosphere is very local feeling, but still not awkward for a first timer. It's the kind of place you expect to see in an old corner of town in a run down standalone building, but it almost feels out of place here since this area is actually somewhat modern and borderline hip these days. But they are holding steady and it doesn't seem like they have changed a thing, despite the changing surroundings. Obviously it's working for them.
4 stars for country fried steak, 3 for everything else. Majority rules. -

After seeing all the reviews,I decided to try the lunch here. They were pretty busy and we had a new server, but she was fine. The only thing was she was a little frazzled, but that's understandable.
The atmosphere is very casual. You can tell this is where the locals that are over the age of 50 come. I would say that we were the youngest people in the restaurant.
I ordered just the fish sandwich (yes, I know plain) but I wasn't feeling too adventurous as to order the fish reuben or the fish philly. The white fish that they use is basa, not tilapia. The bf ordered, "Gainesville's best reuben sandwich." The fish sandwich was fine, a little bland. It didn't come with tarter sauce or anything to put on the sandwich, so I just resorted to hot sauce to make it more tasty. Bf said the reuben was ok, just a little too greasy. The fries that came with both meals were crispy and thin, and were seasoned well. Overall, the meal was just fine. Maybe it was just our fault we ordered "boring" items. But I would come back to try the breakfast. -

Had breakfast there this morning.
They are consistently good. They blow away Ivy's who charges $12 for the type of food.
You can at least have breakfast here without breaking the bank. -

Having something of a tradition of eating a great diner breakfast the morning of any big football game, my buddies and I had scoped out the 43rd Street Grill & Breakfast House before we had even left Texas on our trip to Gainesville for the Florida/Tennessee game. We wanted to make sure we had something lined up so we could get going bright and early, and 43rd Street did not disappoint.
We had gotten ahead of ourselves a bit the night before, so we were a tad groggy Saturday morning, plus we needed to line our stomachs for a long day of football drinking. When I saw the "One Heck of a Mess" on the menu, I knew I must have it. Two pieces of toast on the bottom, with three eggs (I added one) and bacon, all topped with a whole mess of creamy sausage gravy - with rather sizeable chunks of sausage in it, I might add. The rest of the table got diner classics like corned beef hash, and everyone was well pleased. Great success.
The decor leaves something to be desired, basically just a large open space with linoleum floors and a few paintings from a starving artist sale or something on the walls, and you have to essentially walk through the kitchen to get back to the restrooms, but the service was great and the food came through with flying colors. And at a diner like this, that's really what matters.Listed in: Diner Breakfast, Gainesville Trip

Great Service !! Totally chill place and totally fab breakfast. The only problem -- TOOO Many things to choose from... I felt dining pressure trying to decide.
I had the Greek hash browns. Nice crispy (my fave) hash browns topped with peppercini, olives, feta, onions, and tomatoes -- all with scrambled eggs on the side. I know some people would complain about what I'm going to say next but I LOVE IT -- the portions are totally reasonable -- NOT GIANT !! It's great -- you don't feel so stuffed you want a nap after breakfast.
Hubby and I shared one sweet potato pancake --- YUMMMMMMMMMM !! can't wait to try the granola buttermilk pancakes or lots of their many yummy sounding french toast options.
Hubby had O'Reilly Benedict (muffin, corned beef hash, poached egg) and really liked it but said he would get the corned beef hash without the muffin next time.
We went at 10am on a Sunday and we got a seat right away so don't let the line talk scare you !!! Although it's worth a wait if there is one !!! -

One of the best breakfast places in Gainesville. The staff is amazing! No matter who is walking by your table they'll get you a refill or make sure your doing ok. The food is great I had the Fire Cracker Omelet which was great. Get it without Jalapenos if your not a big fan of heat. The picnic style tables can be a little uncomfortable but it's seat your self so make sure to pick a table or booth.

This is just a good old fashioned breakfast place with a huge menu. Everything I have ordered here has been pretty darn good.
The service is fast and friendly, but the place is not much to look at, it is more of a get in and eat and be on your way type of place.
Good for vegetarians as they offer tofu and tempeh in place of meat in their dishes.Listed in: Gainesville

We have a new fave lunch and breakfast place in town. Been here for both. We originally drove to the 13th St. place but a sign on the door directed us here. Not sure what's going on there.
Breakfast - My Extreme Hash Browns with three cheeses were above standard but the LDC's veggie omelet was very delicious. We also split a pancake just to compare it to Perkins. It didn't compare. Service was attentive and friendly.
Lunch - It was right at 2pm, breakfast cutoff time. Our waiter volunteered that he would hold the kitchen so we could still order breakfast if we hurried. So my LDC ordered a tofu kinda scrable thing. with hash browns. She didn't think it was all that good but didn't have the heart to send it back considering they extended the cutoff time for her. I on the other hand got a hot pastrami sammie and although the meat was a little thicker than I preferred, I enjoyed it. It was served on very soft rye bread and smeared with spicy brown mustard. Very good.
This place isn't a real deli like you would find on the real 42nd St. but it's a welcome substitute to me. I'd like to try their liver and onions sometime. Go figure. . . -
Review from Coleen T.
The food was very tasty, but honestly overpriced for the quantity. I went here for a quick sit-down breakfast the other morning, and my girlfriend and I ordered two things to share. We were short on cash so decided to get the hash brown casserole plate (coming with eggs and a biscuit) and then just get a side of french toast. I wanted to try the 'honey bun' french toast, so I asked if I could get it a la carte. Everything was delicious, but then when we got the bill, I was still charged the same price for the french toast as I would have been charged for the french toast breakfast platter with eggs, sausage and hash browns. I'm not really the type of person to make a fuss, so I didn't say anything, but I didn't appreciate the sense I got ripped off.... I'm afraid I won't be returning.

It's funny, my friends and I had initially tried to go to another breakfast place, but the previous place was so packed that we sort of stumbled onto this place. I'm glad we did.
I was in Gainesville for my brother's graduation weekend and I know that graduation weekend is one of those crazy busy times. While this place was pretty busy, we were still seated promptly.
Our waiter was really friendly and upbeat. :)
There were a lot of choices for breakfast and I ended up getting the Belgian waffle combo which included a Belgian waffle, two eggs, and bacon. I also got a side biscuit. I got the eggs over easy and they were great! Just a bit runny which I like. The Belgian waffle was perfect. I'm always afraid I'll get a crunchy waffle but this was nice and fluffy.
My husband and friend both got the orange and blue omelet which had both cheddar and blue cheese. They were really happy with their choices. There was also a never-ending supply of coffee. The servers somehow seemed to know exactly when someone needed a refill.
Overall it was a great experience and now I know where to go if I want a good breakfast. -

Overpriced, overcooked, overrated. Glass of milk= $2.49 price of a gallon. Buttermilk pancake were not well made and house fries were not cooked. The Greek hash brown was a fusion of un-appetizing repulsive flavors. Not going there again ever, unless someone is will to fork over half a pay check to eat.

There have been several things in this location over the past 23 years since my dad moved around the corner, but this incarnation is the best. If you want a good hearty breakfast (they also serve lunch, but I don't think we have ever ordered off the lunch menu) this is the place.
What I like is that there are plenty of vegetarian options. I wanted the tofu scramble this morning, but they were out of tofu so I had the tempeh scramble and it was just as delicious and filling. One of my kids had the banana bread french toast with berries baked in (I swear each slice was and inch thick and about 6" long), plus 2 eggs and sausage. I don't care for french toast personally, but I could start eating this one! They have all kinds of combos, from eggs to pancakes to bagels; and their grits are great!
If you're in Gainesville you should check them out. Keep in mind that weekends can be crazy, especially during football season. -

This is where I take out of town guests for a hearty Southern breakfast. Lots of choices as well as simple food done well. Much better biscuits than that biscuit restaurant across the street. The atmosphere is casual and comfortable, but you risk having screaming kids next to your table because it is very family friendly.

Excellent breakfast and brunch. This is the place in Gainesville to have breakfast. Weekend mornings the line is out the door, but it is worth the wait! I help manage the awesome optical next door and have eaten my way through most of the menu. I do find some fault in their dishes commonly lacking cheese, but when you ask for cheese to be added the staff is more than happy to list your favorite options. Their salads and sandwiches for lunch are also impressive options. While recently dinning with one of my co-workers their I saw her do the "When Harry met Sally" thing of beating on the table after she tried the homemade salad dressing. I hope you enjoy your palate orgasm.
