Not too long ago, my girlfriend got us tickets to see Nymph's Errant. Her remark right as we got in the theater was funny: "Is it just me, but are we the two youngest people here?"

    We're in our 20s.

But who cares? The show was great. They told a great tale, had some great props, sang some great numbers, and had a mama's boy that was worth the price of admission alone.

You still won't catch me seeing ABBA though. Guess I'm still "too young" for that.

A wonderful theater company that puts on plays by the likes of Gershwin and Cole Porter. I saw Silk Stocking here the other night with a friend and it was so fun! The actors are talented and seem to be having a great time. The theater (Eureka on Jackson Street) is just the right size and perfect for a night out. AND They have discounted tickets for those under 30 years.

I am so sad that I have just found out about this company because I would have been going to their plays for the past five years if I had known. Next April they are doing a play called Sugar inspired by Some Like it Hot and I am already planning on being there!!

Opportunity knocked! And a young actor named Kyle Payne stepped in and shot the performance through the roof!

IRMA LA DOUCE! 42nd Street Moon! I was totally taken off guard by the quality of the performances. I was expecting good from this company . . . . we got great!

The performance was at the Eureka Theatre at 215 Jackson Street in San Francisco. Wonderful little theatre . . . great acoustics! Simple sets, simple costumes, great performances!

If this is the quality of 42nd Street Company's performances, not a single one should be missed.

Regrettably, one of the stars was injured and couldn't perform . . . . but oh, my, what an opportunity for Mr. Payne and what a remarkable job he did!

    BRAVO!

If you love old movies (which I do), musicals (which I do) and a good night out at the theatre that doesn't break the bank (ditto), then this theatre company is for you.  They revive old musicals from the 20s, 30s and 40s and present them in an understated, not too staged way.  The talent is almost always stellar and its usually pretty eye-opening to discover great entertainment that has remained largely unknown to modern audiences.

If you know someone who is new to theatre, this may be a good entrance point but keep in mind that these are not McMusicals like the barfy Cats or over-the-top Phantom of the Opera.  Not that that's a bad thing but c'mon people, can we try a little harder to expand our horizons?

We just saw this yesterday, my lady and I.  42nd Street Moon is classic musical theatre, done by a gifted ensemble who loves this stuff.  They bring the good shows back to life.  They're able to do this and keep the prices approachable by maintaining focus on excellent stories and elegant performances rather than elaborate staging and giant orchestras.  Striking the balance in this way means that they can produce a number of different shows in a season, while holding to the highest standards of music, dance, and acting - to my taste, most of what I look to a musical for.  These guys really define "professional."

We've been attending their shows for several years now, usually impressed what the quality and entertainment, but Call Me Madam was over the top even for 42nd Street Moon!  The story is engrossing (based on, but not constrained by, a moment in recent history), the music excellent (Irving Berlin), the actors at top form, and the stunning lead performance is Klea Blackhurst, a red-headed revelation who combines the rich voice and audience-embracing presence of Ethel Merman with an enchantingly warm personality and dead-center comic timing.  If you've seen 42nd Street before, this is among their very best.  And if you haven't...oh my.  Buy a ticket and brace yourself for a TREAT!

Five reviews, huh? I know: most San Franciscans don't like piano music, jazz, cabaret, theater or musicals. Companies like this are usually relegated to sleepy towns like Manhattan.

But if you do like those things, make your way to the Eureka. You'll find the standards ("All the Things You Are," "Begin the Beguine," "Lady Be Good") in their original settings -- shows of the 1920s and 1930s -- performed by folks who can act and sing. Plus enthusiastic costume designers and great musicians. And when it all comes together, as it does every time here, the effect will make you laugh.

It's true that the audience is more jazz age than Internet age -- or even new age. If being reminded of your mortality is what you seek to avoid, keep your eyes on the stage.

My review of one performance follows:

42nd St Moon took an odd play and made it as accessibly entertaining as The Producers. Very Warm for May comes out smelling like a rose: great and weird, an elegant and successful parody of a very specific little corner of 1939.

As usual, the pianist is fantastic (jazz fans: learn your Kern here!). There's some fabulous singing. Sondheim fans will note the influence Hammerstein had on him with lyrics like these. And if you hate all that, you should still go to see Maureen McVerry's performance. And as usual, costumes and hair were done just right. This is a terrifically hard play to make interesting and charming, and this director -- and these actors -- did it with aplomb.

This theatre company, founded in 1993, puts on musical theatre that is quite uncommon - not your usual Broadway hits like "Fiddler on The Roof" or "West Side Story", but more obscure musicals like "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" and "L'il Abner".  My friend Jason, an amazing actor and singer, introduced me to these small yet talent-packed shows when he starred in two of them...what a great local theatre comany!  This is the part when I tell you to go support the arts....

This is a great concept - revive old musicals on a low budget.  Minimal sets, music and costumes but maximal performance.  We saw Irma La Douce and really enjoyed it.   This was an inexpensive night out that delivered more than expected.

Artistic Director Stephanie Rhoades does a great job with all the classics of the theatre. Great place for an afternoon of entertainment. Only issue is they need to find more untapped talent in the Bay Area.
