19 reviews for 42nd Street Bagel
I think any place with "bagel" in their name better be a pretty darn good bagel place with lots of bagels to choose from.
Although 42nd Street Bagel isn't located on 42nd street...their wide selection of bagels, and bagel sandwiches fits its name.
Located in downtown Claremont in "the village", 42nd Street Bagel boasts 16+ types of bagels and sandwiches which include the breakfast "ConEGGtion" (bagel, egg, cheese), club sandwiches, roast beef, reuben, and more. I like their wide selection. Their coffee is pretty good too. They have a young cheerfull staff that's happy to serve you.
Prices are less than a dollar for a bagel (94 cents) and my ConnEGGtion was just under $4. Got it on a sesame bagel. Eggs came out real fluffy and the cheddar cheese on it was pretty standard. I wish I had followed my friend's idea of adding a sausage to his sandwich, because my bagel lacked the savory breakfast taste I so desired.
I will definitely come back to this place for a quick breakfast. Yay! I'm a fan.
Five stars for the coffee. I went to the Claremont colleges and this place sustained me when I had lots of homework to do. It's rich, roasty, and very caffeinated.
The bagels are good too for the West Coast. Sometimes they get slammed and make mistakes, but they are quick to correct them.
I love their veggie deli sandwich.
Sandwiches should probably be $1 cheaper but this is Claremont.
I was so happy to find this place once I moved from San Diego. We had superior bagel places back in SD, and I must say this is the only one that comes even close in this area.
This place gets an extra star making it a solid five for being open at 7:30 in the morning. My sleeping arrangement for my stay in LA evicted me from the couch ever too early and thus sent me on a breakfast hunt of some kind.
42nd St. Bagel was there to save the day.
Walking inside the walls are covered in what looked to be theatrical playbills and had a very 1950's feel to the tables and flooring.
The employees were the nicest and most patient with me as I contemplated what type of bagel I wanted for my breakfast. Whole wheat honey bagel with cream cheese and a small coffee set me back a little under 5 bucks which was delightful because the bagel and the coffee lasted far longer as I was consuming them than I ever expected them to. And held me over until almost 5 PM today.
Let me just say that their "small" coffee was anyone elses large which was wonderful for an upcoming driving adventure, and their selection of coffees were better than any I had seen before. Their Italian roast was INCREDIBLE. This Wop approves. Maybe the coffee cups seemed even larger to me after I found my favorite blend because you could savor the taste of the coffee rather than slugging it down like a regular coffee stand.
Delectable.
Even the customers inside for the busy morning rush were extremely polite for my ignorance as to where to move about for bagel pickups, coffee filling, etc. etc.
42nd St needs to open in San Diego.
Badly.
Wonderful mix for all ages to go. Kid friendly but also looks to be a good place to catch up with an old friend or stop in for a date.
42nd St is my now must stop at location for future visits to that area.
I'm in love.
I love this place!
My pre-exam routine includes showing up here around 6:30a and getting a plain salt bagel and the coffee of the day iced to go... YUM!
My favorite coffee flavor is the Nutty Doodle... it's hazelnut... so yummy. You can always purchase the coffee grounds to go and make it at home... I seriously need to do that again. We finished the first bag a long time ago... soo good!
For students this is a great place... b/c you do get student discounts (just make sure to show your student ID). You don't have to be a student of Claremont colleges... I'm a student at Western U and we still get the discount too ;-)
Great place for early AM bite to eat and delicious coffee!
I went in recently and got this bagel and egg sandwich (it had some ridiculous name that I blocked out of my memory) and the menu said you could get "veggie sausage" on it, which I got very excited about!
I go home, open it up and find a Gardenburger. Um, what? In what universe does a gardenburger patty = veggie sausage? Really disappointing!
The bagel was delicious though.
I love 42nd Street Bagel's...they have some of the most fresh and delicious bagels I've ever had. I love their Jalapeno Cheddar bagels, the Cinnamon Sugar Bagels(I can't remember if this is the correct name) is one of the best things I've ever tasted), great Onion Bagels, and the Pizza Bagels are really yummy. I can't wait to move back to California to get my fix of 42nd Street Bagel!
Greeeeat Jalapeño and Cheddar bagel
Fucked up price
I come here never
Haven't eaten a bagel in a long time but a couple
times I've made one of these guys at home and
it's just as good and WAY cheaper
My suggestion - go, order what seems most appetizing
to you, eat it, and if you like it you can most likely make it
at home
Thx for the ideas
Here's a story you might find interesting about this place:

Gee, if only they knew how to make a REAL bagel and not an elaborate roll with a hole. Californians or inexperienced Westerners may well love these bagels - but not if they have ever had a REAL one - you know, you boil them after they have been resting in a cool place over night, then you bake them - REALLY hot.
So - if you like rolls that want really bad to grow up and be a bagel - go here. If you want REAL bagels - search out more reviews on Yelp for authenticity. These taste fine. But bagels, they are not.
(PS - 10 points to anyone that remembers the place this building held before it became a fake bagelry!! ;) )
Uhm, So there is nothing like an everything bagel toasted with cream cheese and lox to get you going at 6am before your Pomona court hearing.
I ordered this bagel and fell back in love with Claremont. Sure it's trying to be way too much like a New York bagel place, with the interior decorating, the lox there tastes so good. Its just so good.
It's a little on the pricier side...about 9 bucks for my cream cheese/loxified bagel, it was worth every bite.
God I miss that bagel, I want to go back in time so I can eat it all over again...
I had just got of the Metrolink train and was lugging a large bag around and waiting to be picked up by friends. It was morning time, I was tired and a little hungry. Thought of going to Starbuck's, but 42nd came to the rescue.
A decent local bagel shop in Claremont's Village shopping district. I went for a toasted blueberry bagel with berry cream cheese, and an ice coffee. They were all good. I killed time here, munchin' out, caffeinating, reading an LA Times and trying to steal a wifi signal (42nd didn't offer one of their own).
Liked the ambiance of listening to an employee here sing to some of the songs on the radio--she had a good voice. :)
When it comes to bagels, city folk have it made. You can't turn a corner without walking past a deli, coffee shop or bakery that serves up at least a few variations of the boiled and baked dough. Here in the suburbs however, we don't have so many choices. There are a few restaurants and corporate coffee shops that will offer a few basic choices, but when you spread on the packaged cream cheese and bite into the average looking bagel you begin to wonder if it's even worth the trouble. Those bagels aren't what the establishment is known for. Those bagels don't make or break the corporation. Those bagels aren't even made in that location! What can you do? Go to New York? Maybe. Or you can go to 42nd Street Bagel Cafe, located in the Claremont Village.
At 42nd Street Bagel Cafe, you have more than 25 choices of preservative-free and freshly baked bagels, beginning with the humble plain variety and taking off from there. Keeping the theater theme of 42nd Street in New York, the choices are broken down into two main categories: Star Bagels and Supporting Bagels. Among the stars, there is the Italian Bagel (a bagel costumed like a pepperoni pizza), the Honey Glaze Bagel (coated w/honey & cinnamon sugar), the Parmesan Tomato Basil / Spinach Herb Bagel and the always popular Everything Bagel (rolled in sesame seeds, poppy seeds, onions & garlic). Prices range from $0.79 - $1.52. The Supporting Cast includes Whole Wheat Honey, Garlic, Super Onion, Salt and Jalapeo ($0.69/each).
If you're not satisfied with the lone bagel, then try the Chorus Line of Whipped Cream Cheeses. Freshly made and packaged to go, these toppings come regular strength, low fat or non-fat and get mixed with choices like Scallion, Pumpkin (Sept. --- Dec. only), Lot's O' Lox, Low Fat Very Berry, Low Fat Sun Dried Tomato Pesto, Non Fat Blueberry and Non Fat Fiesta w/Jalapeos. On a bagel they're priced at $0.69, but small ($1.75 - $2.30) and large ($3.05 - $4.05) containers are also sold separately.
For the review, I tried one of the Scene Stealing Cold Sandwiches: a combination sandwich that is served on a choice of bagel with lettuce, tomato, red onion, a pickle slice and a side order of either potato salad, fresh veggies, pasta salad or fresh fruit (seasonal). My choice was the Lox, Stock & Bagel (Nova Lox & Whipped Cream Cheese) on an Everything Bagel with fruit ($6.75). While I waited for my order I walked over to the coffee bar and had my first of three cups of bottomless coffee ($1.65).
The person taking my order was friendly and patient, giving me as much time as I needed to mull over the bagel choices even though the commuters behind me were piling up. Once the order was placed and the money was exchanged, I noticed my bagel was selected using a pastry napkin, which gave me some assurance that the shop takes pride in maintaining high health standards. A few minutes later a basket arrived at my table and was overflowing with everything I asked for. The lox, a brine cured and smoked salmon, was perfectly balanced out by the tomato slices and the low fat cream cheese. Everything tasted fresh, including the fruit choice, a generous slice of seedless watermelon. My sandwich was quickly eaten and enjoyed, and I was out on the street with a combination buzz of coffee and carbs. It was the beginning of a good day.
If you have the time, dine in and enjoy a bottomless cup of coffee at the help-yourself bar ($1.65) and read the newspaper or people watch at one of the outside patio tables overlooking Yale Avenue. It's a nice way to start the day or relax over the weekend.
Not bad, but these are not NY bagels. Too light and fluffy. Also the service is quite slow.
If anyone doesn't know then here you go... If you wondered why 42nd st bagel has suddenly started going down hill then here is your answer. they have changed ownership. the new owner who was previously the store manager bought it from the previous owner when he went belly up and shut down all the 42nd st bagel shops.
Before the change in ownership I was a frequent visitor to the claremont and rancho cucamonga establishment and although NOTHING like a real NY bagel it was good. Since the change of ownership the quality and service has been rapidly declining. My standard order is an everything bagel with veggie cream cheese. The bagels have 3/4 less "everything" on them then they use to, at least they have the last 2 times I have been there, and before they were very generous with the cream cheese, now not so much. And they are seeming smaller everytime we come in...
Coffee great as usual, but again if any employee or better yet the owner reads this please know that the regulars (the ones who will keep you in business) can taste the cut backs and they are not appreciated. Please do not make unecessary changes.. We loved our bagels the way they were. Also, get the other register fixed if you have not already... It is quite a nusence to have to wait 30 min cause there is only 1 register especially since I always call in my order to expedite things. DON'T SKIMP ITS NOT WORTH THE BUSINESS YOU WILL LOSE...
Eh. Noah's is better, sadly, though I'd like to support a local chain. Mediocre and a bit overpriced.
Great independently owned bagel shop that offers discounts to students at the Claremont Colleges. They have wonderful chewy bagels that taste really good at 5 a.m. after you've stayed up all night writing a paper.
I've had 2 bagels here in the past 2 years; why, then, do I give them 4 stars?? the COFFEE, baby!! I wasted my whole freshman year of college getting my daily fix from starbucks before I realized what I was missing out on at 42nd street: self-service coffee with BOTTOMLESS refills! Even if you don't need 3-4 cups of joe, you'll find most of their blends are just plain better than Starbucks (which I find to be burnt/overroasted most of the time). Every day they have 2 different blends (reg. or decaf) and a flavoured brew, with offerings ranging from Butterscotch to Chocolate Almond to Creme D'Irlande). They also always have Splenda, which some chains such as Gloria Jean's don't carry (probably bc of its cost) - pretty handy when I'm using 20-25 packets on all those refills. At only $1.89 a cup (1.70 with my 10% student discount), you can drug up without going broke. AND you're supporting local business instead of big corporations! The main downside caffeine-wise is that they're not open as late as Starbucks (I think they close at 7 and 6 on the weekends)
I can't really comment on their food, but their bagels seem decent enough, and they have a good variety of bagels and cream cheeses whenever I go. The sandwiches seem a bit overpriced, though. The atmosphere is really nice on weekend mornings, especially on Sunday when a lot of people stop by either before or after going to the Farmer's Market right down the street.
A great Sunday ritual....bagel and coffee then to the Farmer's Market. You'll feel like you're in Smalltown, USA. Good selection of bagels, friendly staff, decent coffee.
You'll likely see everyone you know in the span of an hour. If you're with guests visiting Claremont, they'll think you're the most popular gal/guy in town.
love this place. i used to work in pomona 2 years ago. i forgot about this place until i shopped at noah's bagels in pasadena. so i stopped by today at 42nd street and saw their variety hasn't changed much. i think they have a much bigger selection of bagels than any other bagel cafes i have been to. I would come back again when i have the time.
