Well tickle me pink, this place made my heart warm, especially with their vanilla maple syrup.  We were having our usual Sunday morning brunch debate and seeing as we were on our way to the Opera 417 Union came into the mix.  Well heck yeah!  I'm so glad we did.  It's the closest thing we've found to a good ole NJ diner down here.  No it's not a diner in looks but it's a diner in menu.  It's also diner-like with their bottomless mini mugs of coffee.  LOVES IT!

At the Taste of Music City Festival we tried the french toast skewers.  Then we forgot about the place, mostly because we are rarely downtown on a Saturday or Sunday morning.  I ordered the french toast because I wanted the syrup.  I also got bacon and two eggs over-easy (cooked perfectly!)  It was one of the number combo items.  The french toast was great, I was really happy with my decision.  I ate all three pieces and didn't look back!  Mostly out of fear because I didn't want to see what it did to my butt size.  It was a great eating weekend but by no means healthy. I'm still working it off.

Back to the good stuff.  Unlike most NJ diners I was able to order a bloody mary.  I drink bloody marys when I can make my own, brunch time or if I'm gambling early morning in Vegas.  They were cranking them out so I had to get one.  It was like a mini salad, but I do wish it were spicier.

To sum it up, I was pleasantly surprised and this will be added to the brunch rotation.  On a nice day I wouldn't mind the 4 mile round trip walk for some delish french toast!

Unfortunately, compared to the rave reviews, I was pretty surprised with how lackluster my experience at this place was.

It's not like this place is terrible. The decor demonstrates that the establishment attempts to pay homage to a 1940's feel, but fails to complete the ambiance by forgetting specific details and trying to cater to a wider audience. Unfortunately for me, the food was far from creative and exciting; I came here for brunch and was really not impressed with the overall options and the quality of the food prepared. Again, it's not like the food was bad, and the vanilla maple syrup was an attempt at pushing the envelope, but it wasn't enough to really wow me. It's really your typical diner food, cooked in a typical diner fashion; nothing was outstanding enough to merit more than 3 stars.

In summary, this is a place that you can stop by if you have nowhere else to go and are craving some food on a Sunday morning. Not a lot of places are open on Sunday mornings in downtown Nashville. However, if you're scouring the town at any other time during the week, I might suggest trying to go somewhere else that might provide you with a better experience and more creative selections.

417 delivers huge portions at a fair price.

I ordered the southern fried chicken.  It came with a salad to start and a choice two sides.  I opted for the mashed potatoes with gravy and cornbread dressing (stuffing).  I could have easily split that with another person.  The chicken was as juicy as the service was fast.  I would come here again with a group to split all the food with.

Flew into Nashville and needed to grab a bite to eat, went to yelp and saw that 417 Union had good reviews as usual yelp never fails me during my travels.  This place is great the Gumbo soup is awesome but quite spice hot... Loved it! I then had the Mediterranean salad with grilled chicken...very well done.   friend of mine tried the fried chicken and he said it was perfect! crispy outside and juicy and tender inside.  I will definitely be back... great place for lunch.  great service as well.

Dude this place is totally awesome.  I love their French toast, eggs and bacon.  The French toast is just the perfect recipe for French Toast.  I'd love to watch them make it so I might do it myself.  I was travelling back and forth to Nashville for work and I made it a priority to return here on multiple business trips.  I actually planned flights just to make sure I could breakfast here.

The vibe to this place was also pretty rad.  It felt very old timey and history oriented yet clean and well polished.  I really like the very masculine woman who waited my table.  She could kill me five times before I hit the ground.  I think she had a big old marine tat on her arm.  What a trip.  She definately adds a lot to the ambience in a weird counter point kinda way.

I've never had any other meal here so I can't offer any advice except the french toast.

Quaint and cozy interior, welcoming and comfy. The service was nice, not the friendliest i have experienced though. Our food took awhile to come out...there were 7 other tables in there total, but only about 4 when we sat down. It took over 30 minutes to get our food. I had the mushroom and red roasted pepper hash and my boyfriend had the caramelized banana pancakes. Both dishes were delicious, we are on the fence as to if they were worth the wait. Overall, I would say its worth trying. Oh yeah and they give a military discount. :-)

417 Union has been serving up grub since 1939 in the current space although it has underwent a few face-lifts since it's inception as a tea house for ladies. The current aesthetic is a homage to the 1940's with the throwback decor and interesting artifacts displayed throughout.
We made our first visit this past weekend for breakfast and although we had around a 10 minute wait, we instantly felt comfy here.

Our waiter was a little rushed and not super friendly at first but when our orders were taking longer than expected, he stepped up his customer service. There wasn't much that I could order on the breakfast menu that would work with my vegan diet but I can't deny that I longed for the Caramelized Banana Pancakes ($7.29) which consisted of pancakes topped with rum and maple glazed bananas. Um, wow.
I opted for the Veggie Reuben ($8.99) from the lunch menu instead that was a pretty bland grilled portabella mushroom with sautéed vegetables, lettuce, tomato, and Swiss (which I excluded) on grilled rye. It was teamed up with crinkle french fries which got the job done of fulfilling my hunger but wasn't anything that I couldn't make myself at home. Need I remind you that I am no chef....

Overall, I would certainly consider coming back to 417 Union but it just wouldn't be a first choice as a vegan.

TIP: Daily specials are offered Monday - Friday.

My wife and I went here visiting town on a Tuesday morning.  It was weird - we were the only people in there.  Anyway, the atmosphere was VERY cool.  A lot of World War II memorabilia on the walls.  I'm a WWII geek, so it appealed to me as soon as we walked in.  The music was 40s-era swing and jazz - also very cool.  However, the food is the main point.  They have a pretty standard breakfast menu from what I could tell.  I ordered an omelet, but the server neglected to write my order down and when he brought it out, it was wrong.  I ate most of it, but wasn't real thrilled about it.  My wife's omelet was good.  The house red potatoes are pretty good and the toast was good.  Breakfast isn't tough to mess up, but our server didn't put the order in correctly.  When we go to Nashville next, we might go there, but it probably won't be tops on the list.  I don't think we would rule it out, though.

Meh, first off I wasn't as impressed by the decor as others on here. It looks like any other diner, but with old pics on the wall. No transporting, just your standard diner. I found the breakfast menu to be pretty standard too: egg dishes that didn't come with many sides, french toast, omelets, etc. etc.

I will say the coffee was good (but larger cups, please!) and the service was extremely friendly. I got the standard 2 eggs, bacon, potatoes and toast. The eggs came out cooked just right, the bacon was crisp and the toast was good. It wasn't anything you couldn't get at any diner, but it was done well. I also got a bloody mary, which was well balanced, but not the best I've ever had. The bf felt they should have had a bigger breakfast option that included potatoes and grits, not just one or the other.

In general, I wasn't overly impressed with this place, but found it to be a solid, basic breakfast spot. I'd probably go back if I was staying down town, but wouldn't drive to the area specifically for it.

Became very ill with food poisoning after eating lunch there on 10/5/11.  Took 2 emails and a phone call before anyone would respond and still the owner only emailed me saying "that they cook in small batches to prevent food poisoning".  Yikes...if that's what they think prevents food poisoning, no wonder I got it!
I believe it was the cornbread dressing and the doctor in the ER that I wound up in thought so too.  I could not eat it...it was inedible (soupy, salty and tasted old).  It was also at room temperature which is dangerous for restaurant food.  Dressing can go bad FAST when handled and stored improperly and then not heated to a temp to kill any bacteria.

We probably ate lunch here once ever 6 weeks or so...not because it was that good; it's just our downtown choices are limited.  417 Union used to be a lot better when it first opened and for the past year or so, the plate lunches increasingly tasted like opened cans (even the chicken on the taco salads tasted and appeared to be canned chicken)...it's just not F.R.E.S.H.  If you like fresh food, you will not be pleased here.  The food is mediocre but we liked the atmosphere and try to support locally owned restaurants.

I will never return not only because of the attitude of the owner when I got food poisoning from his restaurant but the food is just not worth the risk.

Always be proactive with your food in restaurants.  If it tastes funny, if it's not properly heated, if your cole slaw or potato salad is room temp....SEND IT BACK.  We Southerners can be TOO polite.  Maybe you can save yourself the 5 days of being sick and $1000 plus ER bill that I have.

We ate here for Sunday brunch. It's not an upscale brunch spot, but when you just want yummy food at a reasonable price, this is perfect. The place was spotless, and the waitstaff was friendly and attentive. My husband ordered the mushroom swiss burger and I had the smoked salmon hash. Our food did seem to take a while; it was 2 pm on a Sunday, and there were maybe 7 other diners, so the wait was a bit much. But it was worth it when our food arrived. Nothing fancy in the presentation, but everything was seasoned and cooked perfectly. There are a wide variety of items on the menu, though the offerings remain well within the obvious Americana inspiration. We will definitely be back!

417 Union is the restaurant that in itself is a gesture of hostility towards the downtown eating establishment. This place retains its Southern feel while offering a variety of choices. The quaint atmosphere and cozy feel makes for a great break from the office during lunch.

The food here is excellent. Everything from Prime Rib Sandwiches to vegetable medleys and homemade Banana Pudding. The wait staff is friendly and expedient. It may look pretty busy but they manage to keep wait times pretty low.

If you're looking for something a little quieter than the Arcade and feel like a more intimate atmosphere, swing by 417 and you won't be dissappointed.

All previous reviews said this place was good for kids. I would say the complete opposite. It is NOT a place for kids. The device was very slow and the waiter had zero personality. The food was good but it wasn't anything you can't get elsewhere with better service and better ambiance for kids.

One of the best kept secrets in town. Classic Americana joint, awesome made-from-scratch dishes. It's surprising how good the food is here - especially compared to the prices. The bar is lacking in tap selection. Otherwise, great setting, great food, type of joint where you feel like you could become a 'regular.'

In a nutshell, the food was pretty good but  the service was poor.

First of all, we were seated as far back from the dining area as possible.  I'm sure they would have seated us in the darkest corner, but that table was already taken by an interracial couple.  The waiter placed the menus and silverware down on the table as if he wanted us to face the wall.  Uh....no thanks.  We sat ourselves facing the dining area.

The waiter brought water (with lemon slices and straws) and coffee (with actual teaspoons) to patrons seated around us.  He brought us water, but we received no straws or lemon slices.  He brought us our coffee and then tossed down some plastic stirrers while saying, "We're all out of spoons."  Two minutes later, he brought water with lemon slices and straws, and coffee with teaspoons to the elderly Caucasian couple sitting next to us.  Hmm.

Next, a different person served our food to us--pancake combo and combo#3--solid, but otherwise overshadowed by the terrible service.  Not once did our waiter come by our table to see how we were doing, while he stopped by the neighboring tables multiple times.  In fact, he walked by our table repeatedly without even looking in our direction.

We thought maybe the waiter was treating us poorly because he thought we were Ravens fans in town for the game.  However, he was quite friendly to a table of four Ravens fans in full purple regalia.

I'm not quite sure why we received this "special" treatment, other than that my gf and I have something in common with the other couple tucked away in the darkest corner.

This was one of the better places that we ate at while in Nashville. The menu definitely had a Southern twang to it which was evident in my breakfast choice of a hamburger steak with carmelized onions topped with gravy with green beans and rice on the side. Unusual choice yet awesome. While the rice was not cooked completely and was still crunchy, I didn't care because the rest of it was fatty goodness.

In fact, this place was so good that we had to come back again. The second time, I had prime rib hash. I have never had it and while it wasn't like traditional corn beef hash that I've had in the past, I almost liked it better. Potatoes mixed with tiny chopped pieces of prime rib left me more than satisfied. A little heavy for breakfast and the 97 degree heat outside but I was happy with my decision.

The service was cordial...not exceptionally friendly but not rude. Polite is probably the best way to put it. Everything was reasonably priced and definitely the best place to grab breakfast in the area.

From the moment you step into 417 Union you are catapulted back in time to the 1940's. This eatery is presented in the style of a diner around the end of World War II. But upon arriving for breakfast, the decor isn't what dropped my jaw. It was the scintillating menu offerings.

Cinnamon Apple Pancakes, Portabella and Roasted Red Pepper Hash and an awesomely stuffed Blue Ribbon Omlette (sliced prime rib, mushrooms, onions & gorgonzola cheese) all shouted "eat me!" from the menu.

What won the shouting contest, while contemplating the Lox and Bagel breakfast, was the Smoked Salmon Hash; smoked Alaskan salmon grilled with onions and seasoned potatoes then topped with three over-medium eggs. Served with sliced tomatoes and toast.

This was a heavenly selection, unlike anything I've ever tasted before.  Nice big chunks of homestyle cut potatoes and the salmon's rich flavor mixed in with every bite.  The tomatoes were tender, fresh from the local farmer's market and the toast was thick-cut and served with blackberry jam.  I wanted to get up and do a little dance - but that would've meant pausing the fork, and the mouth was having none of that pausing business.

About halfway through, I sat back and actually took in the sights, which will be a loving time trip for those who love the era.  Aided by piped-in music featuring lots of big band, swing and crooners of the period, this was absolutely one of the bests breakfast visits I've had in years.  This would be a definite re-visit next time coming to Nashville.

I went to 417 Union not knowing what to expect.  I must say I was pleasantly surprised!

Admittedly, when I walked in I had a "where in the hell am I " moment.  The place is decked out in World War II memorabilia--something I wasn't at all expecting. However, once I got past that curve ball, I was good to go.  The price was right, my burger was great, the server was awesome, and who doesn't love a 2 for 1 Happy Hour?

I would probably give this neighborhood restaurant 4 stars if my first impression wasn't so skewed. A group of three of us were seated in the very back corner of the restaurant, away from the majority of the other diners. Usually I would ask to be re-seated, but the others in my party didn't really mind, although they noticed it as well, so I just kept my mouth shut.

The waiter did his job of being attentive and prompt, but he had no life to him! He looked like he didn't like his job, and would rather be in bed than serving me breakfast.

I did like the decor of this place, as it is set up as a Southern-style mansion with crown-molding, antique-looking wooden chairs, and Southern paintings on the wall.

The food was really good. I got the Farmer' omelet, and it was very tasty. Nothing really for me to jump out of my chair with joy for, but solid.

In all truthfulness, if I am ever back in Nashville, I would give it another shot, but I am HUGE on first impressions, and 417 Union dropped the ball in my opinion, mainly due to the service.

Nice little spot for Sunday brunch. Full bar. We really liked the look and feel of the place and it had a cool, understated vibe.
The food is good and the service was fast and friendly.
The French toast was tasty and came with eggs and bacon for $8.29. I really liked their bacon's smoky goodness.
She had an omelet that hit the spot and the coffee was quite good.

Came here on a weekend in the middle of winter. The bitter wind made it "minus" something outside. Only metered parking on one side of the one way street so we ended up squeezing in behind a U-Haul truck about two blocks away.

Bundled up and bee-lined it for the pub/restaurant. I'm calling it like we saw and smelled it. This is a bar with some tables and booths with a TV mounted up in one corner.

Peeled off our layers and slid in an end booth. Ordered the pork chops with poached eggs and homemade potatoes on the side plus rye toast and a vegetable omelette with the same sides. Honestly, it took longer than we expected considering there were only three couples inside.

BUT, the food was excellent. Pork chops - tasty, meaty, not rimmed in a thick fat ripple and the omelette was fluffy and filled with fresh veggies. After reading another yelper's review, I expected a baby sized pork chop. Seriously, unless you're looking for a change of scenery from your local trip to Shoney's, it's plenty.

So why not 5 stars? Simply lack of parking. The bar atmosphere didn't bug us. It was accessibility. If you're downtown, go. It's worth it. If you're not, allot extra time to park.

This was a random selection my two travel companions and I made.  It was close to the Sheraton where we were staying and we wouldn't have to walk that far and dodge swarms of cicadas.

What a fortunate coincidence!!  We were only in Nashville for four days and we ate here twice during our stay.  Both visits were wonderful.  The waitstaff were absolutely the nicest people -- our favorite was Danny -- and the food could not be beat.  We also adored their flower pens and they were so kind as to give my friend one as a souvenir!

During my first visit I had the fried tilapia sandwich.  For the most part I am pescetarian (no land meat) and wasn't expecting much from a southern fish sandwich.  At one point I was literally moaning the sandwich was so good.  Also, had the fried pickles, which were a salty snack popper. Highly recommend!

The second visit I decided to just go for it and ordered the fried chicken.  I could not visit the south without trying authentic Southern Fried Chicken.  I was NOT disappointed.  It was beyond delicious.

I could not recommend this restaurant enough.  No complaints whatsoever.

417 Union was a nice change of pace for me when I worked downtown and needed somewhere to go for lunch. The place was packed for lunch, which I took as a good sign. I'd definitely try to go early or late to avoid the noon rush.

It has daily blue plate specials -- basically your meat and three type options. I'd say it's a little more refined than a normal meat and three place if that makes sense. They have a huge dining space upstairs. I really enjoy their chicken fingers and enormous lunch salads. The place is also open for dinner a few nights a week and breakfast as well. I'd be curious to try meals at either of those two times to see what they are like. I bet it's good stuff moderately priced.

It's always good to have options, and I'm sure everybody that lives downtown enjoys having this place open for dinner. It's a cozy, comfortable place that's definitely worth your time and money.

Reasonable prices, great food, and friendly staff.

What a great little spot downtown!!

The Superb:  I loved the decor in this place: vintage ads from the 40's, WWII articles, etc.  It had a very "classic" feel inside which I found rather heartwarming.  The staff was very friendly and seemed to truly care about you enjoying your time there.  I had the "rattlesnake chicken" dish, which was quite good.  I was worried it would be over-sauced, but it was done very well, and the blackened chicken was juicy and quite flavorful.

    The Average:  Prices were fair.

The Poor:  Things were a bit over-salted, especially the soup of the day (vegetable).

All said and done, I would definitely lunch at this place again if I were in the downtown Nashville area.

finally decided to stop in here after numerous times of passing by the door to go to koto. this is a very american place, the place has the vibe of a space that's been housing and feeding people for generations and i really liked that.

when we stopped in at about 6pm, there was a hostess and a poor girl pulling bartender and server duties. service wasn't the best, as this girl was getting ran pretty tough. it wasn't too packed, but she did have quite a few tables. we got out appetizer of battered and fried mushrooms, and they were really good. they were cooked, but not oily, and when you bit into them you didn't get a bunch of oil squirt out (hate that). the menu said they were served with horseradish sauce, but lol @ that, it was coarse ground spicy mustard.

i got a regular cheesburger and fries. i dunno why, but i wasn't expecting much from the burger, even after reading on the menu that they get everything locally, etc. you know, the buzzwords that sends yelp into a tizzy. they crinkle cut fries belied that description, as they took me back to reduced lunch at westlawn middle school in 1990. the burger itself was REALLY good, though! it was quite overcooked (i asked for medium, as always) but still very, very tasty. i had the great american burger, added onions (as it doesn't come with), and just mayo. onions were sauteed. it's very, very easy to get a burger in nashville that isn't as good as this one, so this is absolutely a solid choice. friend had the southwestern adobo burger and he mentioned how good it was, particularly the sauce.

i'm very much looking forward to coming back here, the sooner the better.

Cute little restaurant off the beaten path! Very quiet atmosphere that's really quaint and friendly. I've never seen the place busy either which makes it nice for a nice quite, relaxing/ romantic dinner!

Went with a group of friends to 417 Union for brunch, while in Nashville for a wedding.  We has a group of 10, and they were able to seat us promptly, and our drinks came quick.  Our server was a female body builder who looked like she was preparing for competition.  Her muscled were so jacked, it was a little intimidating at first... but she was a very good server.

As a vegetarian I found it difficult to find something off of the breakfast menu to eat.  I wound up ordering the Southwestern Chicken Salad, without the chicken.  It was fine, and I did eat the whole thing, but there wasn't anything really special about this salad.  (could be my fault for nixing the chicken).  This dish seemed like something that could be ordered at a high-school cafeteria.

This is a nice little Nashville Restaurant... that could use a few more vegetarian options.

Stopped in to have a late breakfast and my waiter, Eric, suggested lunch. It turned out to be the best idea. First was a good cup of coffee, then was the fried chicken and last French toast with bananas for a desert. The chicken was perfectly cooked ... golden outside and moist inside with not a trace of any grease. The French toast was great too with carmeled bananas as an extra treat. My last tip is to get the tomatoes and okra or the potatos as a side dish.  Both had that homecooked feel and flavor.

When you walk in, you notice that this place has unique atmosphere. The bar area has a "throw back" look and the place just feels nostalgic. The food is good. There's large menu and I love that breakfast is always available. The blue plate special options are usually pretty good. The upstairs area, while roomy, has a little weaker atmosphere and needs some redecorating. But all in all, its one of my favs for lunching downtown.
