Wonderful atmosphere.  The reuse of an older building with a glass-ceiling indoor patio is a nice touch.  There were also plenty of friendly regulars around us at the bar, another good sign.

The food was delicious and reasonably priced and portioned.

    All-around great experience.

411 West is somewhere between the Olive Garden and Macaroni Grill.  Decent food, good atmosphere, but nothing to write home about.

The price is right, but you can tell it's because they are based around volume, not detail.

Was in town on business and came here at the suggestion of the front desk staff at the aLoft hotel.

Glad we came here.  Started off with the Tomato Basil Bisque soup which I thought had the right seasoning and consistency.  I love dipping bread into Bisque soups and this one made it a perfect little marriage.

I ordered the Whole Wheat Fettucine which had Grilled Chicken and a rosemary and marsala cream sauce.  I'm not a big fan of mushrooms and so I had them hold those out of the dish and to my surprise, they actually doubled up on the chicken.  It was fresh, home-made pasta and the flavors were spot on.  The do offer the chance to get either a full portion or a smaller portion.  I went with the full and couldn't finish (although I got close).

My business associate got "The Crab" which is a red-pepper papardelle pasta in a dill cream sauce with lump crab meat, mushrooms and bacon.  He thoroughly enjoyed that and it was the recommendation of our server.  She was really helpful going through the menu with us and letting us know about the daily specials.

We were full, otherwise I really would have loved to have the Millionaire Pie which is a Peanut Butter mousse pie with chocolate and over graham cracker crust.  Next time.

I used to eat here a lot as an undergrad at UNC when it was a special date night or a friend was celebrating a birthday or a pre-fraternity formal dinner. I attended a graduation party in the atrium, too, so that's available for reservation.

I recently went back with my family for dinner, and it didn't feel quite as special as it used to, but it was fine. Everyone was pleased with his or her choice. I had the pear salad to start, which I've had before. It was better the other times (the pear wasn't very flavorful and I think some other items listed on the menu were missing from the salad). For my entree, I enjoyed the pesto pasta with vegetables, and they traded out the linguine for whole wheat fettucini for me. A solid choice for not wanting something too creamy and cheesy.

I will always remember their Million Dollar Pie. It is deliciously peanut buttery and chocolatey. I did not check the dessert menu to see if it's still available, but I'm willing to bet it is.

The wine list is not my favorite.

I have been here 3x and each time the food and service were great.

Good bottle of wine specials during the earlier part of the week.

Great pastas. This place does the balancing act of cheap and delicious very well.

My experience here was really underwhelming on all fronts. Maybe the reviews set my expectations a little high? Either way, I know Italian food, and this place reminds me of a american tourist trap in Rome. You know, they kind of place that would list their menu in english on a little chalkboard outside the door...
We sat in the atrium room. MISERABLE. I was so freaking cold for the entire meal. I didn't have to worry about the water making me any more cold, because it was never filled.

The wine was  blah - it tasted "vintage"... and by that I mean it tasted flat and like it sat over two nights. Luckily my boring homemade pasta dish drowned it out. My uncle makes homemade pasta - at his restaurant in Verona - and this stuff was an attempt at best. But, I will give them a little bit of credit - it's an art, and I appreciate the attempt.

We didn't dare try dessert. After that kind of meal, and battling hypothermia next to the waiter's station (i hate sitting next to a waiter station, that's so tacky) - there was no way in helgramite that i was gonna go down that road - there are too many good places for that in chapel hill.

Stopped here due to the madness of the Food Truck Rodeo in Durham and Lantern closed on Sundays.  It was by pure happenstance as we were hungry and not that familiar with the area (Lantern was only a choice due having bookmarked it a few months back).

We were /very/ pleased with our serendipitous choice!

Started with the flank steak (w/ salsa & fries) and ended with the millionaire pie (peanut butter mousse, chocolate and more chocolate).  It was... delicious!  One of my friends wanted to see if I'd split the pie if she tried a different dessert but nuh-uh, I knew it would be love at first bite.

    And it was.  ;D

[note:  they listed much of their items as local or organic. lovelovelove!]

I met a friend here for dinner after a Football game in Chapel Hill. Obviously after a game it is going to be super crowded and busy. The hostess told us it would be a wait of around 30 minutes so we grabbed a drink from the bar. We were lucky enough to grab two seats so we did not have to stand the entire time. That definitely made a difference.

I think my glass of wine was $5.50 and I think that is a great deal. I had the crab dish for dinner and it was AMAZING. I don't think I have gotten anything else in the other 2 times I have been here.

I think the staff did a great job considering how busy they were. I will definitely go back when I visit Chapel Hill.

Great food in a great location, downtown Chapel Hill! I ordered the Hazelnut Pesto and it was excellent! Full of fresh vegetables, a hint of fresh garlic and topped with hazelnuts. For dessert we ordered the Chocolate Chess Pie and it was delicious! It tasted like a very creamy fudge cake. Even the complimentary bread was very good. I definitely recommend it!

    Food:
Food is Pretty good....not fine dining or the best Italian around but it's consistent, food out of the wood fire oven is the way to go. I like the pizzas!

    Service:
    Very Attentive Bartenders are knowledgeable

    Atmosphere:
You know it's nice but it hasn't changed in the 15 years I've been here....so it's kind of gotten boring and not that interesting to go there. Fine for lunch time but I wish they would update something if anything. Really the look is dated and we're tired of going to the same old space.....please do a remodel!

Stopped by 411 West on the way back to Winston Salem after visiting some friends in Durham.  This restaurant came highly recommended by a co-worker and seemed to have decent reviews on Yelp, so...I figured it was worth a try.

The ambiance inside the restaurant was nice.  Others have described it as "loud" but I'd call it energetic - the way a restaurant should be on a Friday evening.  Service was fast and I enjoyed the free bread that was provided.  My boyfriend and I felt a smidge out of place because it seemed like most of the tables were comprised of college kids having a nice dinner with their families, but...we made the best of it.

I had a salad to start that was alright.  Then I had the vegetarian pesto pasta dish.  Not sure I've ever had such a bland pasta in my life.  I had about 3 pounds of thin angel hair noodles, a handful of vegetables, and a comically small amount of sauce.  In contrast, my boyfriend had a seafood pasta that he thought was absolutely amazing.  At least one of us enjoyed out meals, right?

Overall, I'm not sure I'd go back to 411 West, but it was nice to check out the neighborhood.

Walked in at 5pm on a Wednesday afternoon and the place was empty.  Snagged a seat by the window where we could watch the rain and people on the street.  We ordered 2 things from the dinner menu:

    1.  Butternut squash and black bean salad with cilantro - very good.  Definitely would recommend this. Refreshing, tasty, and satisfying.

    2.  Duck and gnocchi over wilted spinach - definitely going back for this one.  The duck fat was readily apparent, but the meat was cooked to a firm, almost jerky-like consistency.  It paired really well with the tomatoes, spinach, and gnocchi.

Serving sizes were not large.  This might not be the best place to go if you're starving and desiring a huge meal (so it seems from previous posts), but it is a wonderful spot for light bite, some wine or beer, and a coffee.  I wouldn't fret about not having alfredo or such nonsense.  I wouldn't necessarily call this an Italian restaurant, but perhaps New American with a heavy reliance upon Italian-inspired dishes.

Bottom line: I'm going back.  I'd take my mom (a bit of an Alice Waters inspired foodie) to this place without a second thought.

Delicious food, reasonable prices, great atmosphere.  An affordable date night option on busy Franklin St. as well as a good place to meet up with friends.

411 West is probably one of my favorite restaurants in Chapel Hill (it ranks right up there with Med Deli).  I pay $5 extra to add a piece of salmon to their vegetarian pasta and it is amazing.  Their vegetarian pasta is the best vegetarian pasta in the Triangle.

HOWEVER!  Their brunch is not that good, probably 3 stars.  Their brunch beignets are like hard doughsticks.  The service is also very spotty during brunch.  Save your money for Rue Cler beignets or brunch anywhere else.

This restaurant hits all the high points for things you look for in a local joint: Good date/family/group place, cozy bar, consistent/quality food at reasonable prices, great location. I have never been disasappointed by their food and have tried the gamut of offerings including pizza, salad, pastas, seafood. Wines are inexpensive, weekly specials are usually innovative.

I was really torn between three and four stars on this review but really would rate it 3.5 if I could. My boyfriend took me here the day before V-Day to celebrate our anniversary. It was great atmosphere for a date. The service here was good not incredible but good.
I had a salad and the fillet for my main course. Both were good but not great. The thing that got me was that my bf ordered the chicken marsala and his meal came with the same veggies and potatoes as my steak.
Maybe it is just me but when I am paying over $20 a plate I expect a bit of uniqueness to my meal.
Dessert was very good and rich and I did not come close to finishing it. I would recommend this for a date and would maybe try the pasta next time or something a but more "Italian"  to see if they might sway me a bit.

I went there for dinner, so I can't comment on some of the more negative reviewers other than to say the following:
    (1) noise level is not a basis upon which you should be rating restaurants. If you want a quiet restaurant, then investigate BEFORE you go. Moreover, if noise is what turns you off, why would you then sit down? Just leave! This complaint is similar to people who camp out in the left lane and then complain that people are tailgating them: move over! Nobody is holding you hostage.
    (2) I didn't go there for brunch, not sure how that would be bad... dinner seemed great.
    (3) The prices are high, but again, this is determinable BEFORE YOU GO. You can't complain about things that you can KNOW ABOUT BEFORE GOING.

So let's talk about the things that you can't know about before going:
This place was great. Our server was fantastic, and here's how I know: I never thought once the entire night "where is our waiter." Anytime I needed something, it was already on the table, or the waiter was on his way over to ask what I need, recognizing that I am looking for something.

The wine was fantastic. Can't remember what I picked, which is why I know it was fantastic. ;-)

The food was also great. The steak was perfect. When you say medium they listen. This isn't one of those places that cooks it one step up what you request.

    All around top-notch. 5 stars.

I went there tonight with my family. The atmosphere was nice, but there were a lot of people there and the acoustics were terrible. It was very noisy. The prices were very high considering the food portions were so small. The food was not that great either. Overall, I really didn't like it. We won't be back. The service was good though.

The biggest thing that shocked me was they did not have any alfredo sauce. Really? At an Italian restaurant? Oh well... I ate the chicken parm with homemade whole wheat pasta. It was OK. Chicken was good but the sauce wasn't that tasty.

Very tasty food, My bf adores this place and was excited to take me.

First thing I got excited about was the Abita root beer they offer.  As I was raised in New Orleans, I have a sweet spot for Abita, and was so excited to see it available in CH.

The atmosphere was fantastic and our waitress(yes, all females so far) has been wonderful each time we've gone there.

They have excellent, perfectly cooked food, a fabulous bar and a really knowledgeable staff. I don't really suggest you go there if you can't enjoy the hustle and bustle of a loud Italian restaurant, because it is loud, but I love that about it.

Fantastic: the service. Our server Taylor was always on hand, without hovering. When members of our group asked, she made great suggestions for wine and dishes. Also we got stuck behind a large party (the Stanford women's soccer team) so we had to wait quite awhile for the food -- before it even came our waittress apologized and told us dessert would be on the house.

Good: Appetizers and wine. The shrimp w/ spinach was bursting with flavor! The cherry malbec was a bit raw at first but opened up nicely after I let it sit for a bit. My brother's she-crab bacon and gnocci was undersalted -- but that it is an easy thing to fix, and it was tasty tasty after he fixed it.

Meh: the main course. I had the balsamic scallops with rice cakes (?!). It was fine but just not as good as other scallops I've had in this fine coastal state.

I'm giving four stars because the other members of my party were much more satisfied with their food, and because the service was so great.

This was definitely a good call by my man to try this place out for dinner!

We started out with very courteous service, and were seated in the back patio atrium area - very cute.  I always love a natural light lit patio that has air conditioning, especially in the summer.

We ordered a bottle of wine, and it was really very good - I think I've found a new Malbec to love.  When we asked about which dish was better, we got an immediate non hesitant answer (just what I like to hear), so we placed our orders and enjoyed the ambiance in the meantime.

The food came out - and I really did like the lasagna.  The sauce was excellent, and tasted like it was made of fresh tomatoes. It was almost a tad too cheesy for me, but it was so good overall that it worked out really well.  We also ordered the Chicken Marsala - which for me, I always did not like - and it was REALLY good.  I think my distaste for the dish had to do with me tasting one that didn't have a good sauce.. so this place has opened up a whole new realm of Italian dishes for me.  Definitely had a good time!

I went here on a girl's night out with my sister and her friends. It was my first introduction to Chapel Hill and I was ready to be knocked out of my chair with some delicious Italian cuisine.

The Stella's Insalate ($5.45) was full of flavor from its toasted walnuts to its gorgonzola crumbles.

I had the Hazel Nut Angel Hair pasta and it was ho-hum...good, but not that kick in the taste buds great. I ordered a small portion ($8.95) instead of the larger portion ($14.50) and was very satisfied with the serving size. I think the larger portion is for those who like to leave the restaurant rolling out the door.

I topped it off at the end with a delicious LaVazza coffee...yum.

Meal was complete with a stolen taste of my friend's Chocolate Chess Pie ($5.95)...can't go wrong with chocolate!

Overall: This is a trendy restaurant with a lively scene that I would highly recommend for groups. The food is good with some tasty flavors. I thought it was very reasonably priced for dinner. The coffee was delicious which makes me want to come back for brunch...and I think I will!

This place has probably the best brunch I've ever had, and narrowly edges out Ray's Hellburger ( http://www.yelp.com/bi... ) for the best burger I've ever had in a restaurant. I ate here many times during my year spent in Chapel Hill, and I never found another restaurant in this area that could consistently put out the quality of food we always had here.

The one time we went for brunch we ordered the following: 411 French Toast, Eggs Florentine w/ Salmon, and the Country Breakfast w/ home fries and sausage. Everything was perfect. I had the Country Breakfast and Nicole had the Eggs, and we picked little bits from each others plate, and saved the French Toast to split at the end. The brioche bread comes in huge portions, and has just the right moistness to slice right through with your fork. The cinnamon sprinkled all over gives it a great kick, and the bourbon glaze sweetens it up just enough. The home fries here were really flavorful, and have just the right amount of peppers and onions mixed in, definitely reminds me of mom's.

The Maple View Burger here is my absolute favorite from any place that doesn't share an address with me. I usually get it with the gorgonzola cheese and bacon, top on the tomato, lettuce and pickle, spread on some mustard, ketchup and the garlic aoili they give you, and enjoy every incredibly drippy bite (do not wear white here). All the flavors meld together so harmoniously it's hard to believe you're still eating a cheeseburger. On top of that they give you some of the best fries outside of a French/Belgian restaurant.

The staff here is always super friendly, even when we hosted a company event with 50 plus people. Also, be sure to get a seat in the "indoor patio" area, it's so charming! There's a water fountain and little cafe tables with a large glass botanical garden type ceiling.

My experience at 411 West started off on the wrong foot when we were seated 30 minutes after our 7:30 "reservations".  The hostess (who was very sweet) informed me they aren't technically reservations, but "priority seating".  If that's their policy, that's fine, but the link on http://411west.com says "Reservations" thru http://OpenTable.com.  It's still worth reserving something though because if we didn't our wait would have been at least an hour (based on how long people around us said they were waiting).

Moral of the Story: Do make "reservations/priority seating requests" thru OpenTable or by phone, but arrive early if you can to get seated as close to your requested time as possible.  Either way, expect to wait (especially on a weekend night).

I'm partial to what I'll crudely describe as "mafia style" Italian restaurants.  I like to hear Italian coming from the kitchen and Sinatra coming through the sound system.  411 West reminds me of the style of the Bravo chain.  I don't mean that in a negative way; it's just different.

Once we got seated things got better.  There were a lot of menu choices and I had a hard time picking just what I wanted.  For drinks, I highly recommend the Citrus Ade, a very refreshing and satisfying non-alcoholic drink.  I would have loved to explore the wine list, but we're in Lent right now, so maybe next time.

We selected the prosciutto wrapped wood grilled shrimp as an appetizer.  It came with 6 shrimp, good to share among 3 people.  It was okay.  The Stella Insalate was a great version of the traditional balsamic/gorgonzola/walnut salad you see on a lot of menus.  The dressing was really well done both in flavor and quantity (not soaking everything, but not leaving the salad dry).

Where the evening really took off was with the entree.  I tried the bacon wrapped monkfish special with a side of orzo.  It was unique and delicious.  The half portion of pasta and small plate dishes provided just the right amount for my wife and mother-in-law who will often share when we go out.  This way they each got just the right amount but were able to have different things.

I had the vanilla gelato for dessert, which was good but not legendary.  We also had another desert at the table that I didn't try but made my mother-in-law very happy.

When the bill came we were really pleased with how much we got for the money we spent.  We went into the evening thinking it would cost much more than it did - so that's a win too.

I'll try 411 West again and look forward to a follow up review where I can give more stars.  In the meantime, I'm going to try and find that classic Italian restaurant where I can fantasize about being a made man.  Got any recommendations for me?

My favorite restaurant in Chapel Hill.

Food is always good and the dinner specials are constantly changing.

Took my wife on our first date here 8 years ago, am a frequent customer, and have never had a bad meal.

THe servers are friendly and hte atmosphere is great.

The beef tenderloin and the shrimp and polenta are my favorites.

Can`t say it`s bad, but I really go there when I have no place else to go with my friends. Not more italian than olive garden. Foodie`s will be very disappointed, however families with lower weekend dinner expectations may like it a lot.

Can`t lie, I`ll go there again, but mainly because there are not many options in CH.

I finally came here for the first time after hearing enough of the place from friends and it lived up to the expectations.  I came here for lunch and got a steak panini and it was good along with the fries.

When you factor in the price and size of portions, it's a great deal for lunch.  You can easily get by here for only $10.  The place gets pretty busy during lunch time so if you have a group that's going you may want to make reservations.

I definitely recommend it for lunch but can not attest to how good it is for dinner as their dinner menu looked a little on the expensive side.

So I ended up here on the snow night with some friends, needing some high-quality grub.   411 West delivered.

I had the Arizona pizette:  it was basically a chicken taco in pizza form. But the tastes went together perfectly.   One of my dining companions had one of the other pizzas (I think it had gorgonzola and pears, or something) and from trying a little bit of that, found that to also be outstanding.

Service was very good (our waiter checked in regularly with water/drinks), and despite the snow, the restaurant looked great.

They also have what looks to be excellent general Italian food, so if you're looking for something a little bit pricier than elsewhere on Franklin Street (but not in the mood to spend the $$ that you would have to spend at Elaine's), then 411 is a good pick.

I have only been twice but they were both enjoyable, came for lunch and dinner and the service was above average.

Food wasn't as good as I was hoping for though, lack of flavor in the meal that both my date and I had. (I had chicken Parma) I forget her dish.

I'm new to Chapel Hill and after one visit I am adding 411 West to a short-list of favorite restaurants. They start you off with a complimentary bread basket which was especially nice because of the only downside of this restaurant - the service was a little slow. But the bread held us over until our waiter made his way back for our orders.

Their pasta is made daily in house and is just amazing, I could have had my dish with just the angel hair and loved it. Instead, I had the angel hair hazelnut pesto, (with asparagus, baby tomatoes, squash, mushrooms and goat cheese) and it was good enough that I already want to go back for it again.

A lot of their pasta dishes offer small or full portions which is nice. The small was more than enough for me and only $8.95. Their pizzas are a also great and reasonably priced, my boyfriend got the Pizza Luigi ($9.25) and said it was big enough - but did end up finishing off my pasta for me.

And, since the survey questions don't offer me these options: You can eat here for just over $10 a person and I'd say the attire is somewhere between casual and dressy for dinner.

One of my favorite brunches in town! You must get the Eggs Florentine -- I nearly cried when they stopped serving this during the spinach scare of '07 (or whenever that was). A wonderfully cute space, 411 has seating in three rooms -- two indoor dining areas and one indoor-that-feels-outdoor space. You can also sit at the bar.

This was one of my top choices for date dining when I was a student confined to Franklin Street; and it continues to be one of my top choices for Italian. I used to stick to the chicken marsala, but I've since branched out to other dishes and have failed to be disappointed.

I stumbled upon (and ultimately decided on) 411 West because it was clearly the most popular and busiest place on this strip of restaurants and shops on a Monday night.

It's basically an Olive Garden that's owned by a local restaurant company with some kitsch slapped on the walls inside. However, I will say it was much more aesthetically pleasing than an Olive Garden. If I was a UNC student, I'd get a snack and sit by the window here (and eat artichoke dip).

Artichoke dip was super garlicky and good. I had beef tenderloin over truffled mac and cheese. Sounds delicious, right? It wasn't. Mediocre. Beef was flavorless, and the mac and cheese wasn't anything special. A waste of truffle oil, if you ask me (it was a special). My companion's artichoke and sun-dried tomato pizza was only marginally better than mediocre. Millionaire pie was yummy, in a white trash sort of way (sugary sugar goodness).

On the upside, Monday is apparently 1/2 price on a bottle of wine night.
