I'm a betta enthusiast and I love 405 tropical fish! :)
Out of my 3 visits ( so far ), I have never seen any dead fish. The betta's were kept in clean water and they often have great selections to choose from. HM's... VT's... CT's... Plakats... Dragonscale... you name em'! -

This is for their fresh water selection only (:
Their stores may not be big but their FRESH WATER selection is great as ever.
I've been coming here for years and finally I decided to review this place.
Their prices are great, cheaper then any other local areas. Sometimes, you might be able to spot a few rare exotic fish that can't be found at any other LFS. Believe me when I say their prices are really cheap. Every time I walk in, I'd always leave with a fishes in my hand!
Kind of in a hurry so I don't have much else to say!
Check this place out! -

i love this place ! The guys are all very helpful and knowledgable... Great selection of Freshwater Fish but they do carry Marine Fish as well.... Reading Forums online their name popped up a few times as being involved in a lot of the local aquarium clubs so they are really involved in the trade... This would be a Betta Lovers Dream ! Huge selection of pretty good looking females as well as lots of beautiful Males... and some good oddball freshwater fish, i'd stop by every Monday or Tuesday just to see whats new

I've always gone out of my way to buy my freshwater fish here. The prices are really good, and every fish has done well for me. The owners matched prices on an aquarium from another store, which I thought was cool. Didn't have to drive around, bought the tank and fish at one spot. I've bought tanks, filters, food and fish here, always been happy with them.
One time bought some food, and saw it was outdated, took it back. They apologized, gave me a different food, and cleared the shelf of all of the old food. They run a very good fish store. -

Good prices & selection for fresh water. Salt water - very limited. Staff not super friendly or attentative. Store itself is kinda dingy.

Great place, I have been coming here for years. A lot of selection for freshwater fish, They do have a lot of Flowerhorn and Arowana. Good customers service, they will answer all your questions. This is the only place that I know carried flowerhorn medicine, If your flowerhorn is sick, stop by and asked for it. They saved my flowerhorn. The store is small but everything is clean, the fish are usually pretty healthy. I rarely see dead fish in the tank. The price are usually cheaper then most other fish store.

Great place to get fish. I have never had a problem, all the fish I have gotten (most of ky tank) has been healthy. The had a pretty consistant stock but get something weird in every once in awhile. They are always nice and helpful in here and even gave my little boy candy (made his day) on our last trip. Last time I went somewhere else I got ich in my tank. Never again will I go somewhere else.

This fish store is my preferred one when it comes to purchasing new fish for my aquarium. In my experience, they have the healthiest fish and the best prices, which makes the 14-mile drive from my home worthwhile.
They are conveniently located right off the 405 Freeway (hence the name), just down the street from the Westminster Mall and in a strip mall anchored by a Jon's Marketplace supermarket. The inside of the store has a wide selection of new tanks and accessories, fish food, decorations and miscellaneous supplies. The rear of the store contains all the fish for sale.
405 has a decent inventory of freshwater fish. There is one aisle with a limited selection of salt water fish. I thought during one visit, I spotted a couple of piranha fish at the end of one aisle in a darkened tank. I'm not sure if it's legal to own them here in California, but I knew I wasn't going to buy them! This store also have very knowledgeable, friendly staff. Someone else mentioned that the store is owned by Thai people, and even though it can be hard to understand what they're saying, they always take the time to answer my questions and offer advice, if needed. One time several years ago, the owner even let me catch some fish that I wanted to purchase, since he was busy helping other customers that particular day!
I highly recommend this place for all your aquatic pets' needs. -

I stumbled upon this store due to my GPS. I went in and could not even get a hello from the person behind the desk. I walked around the store without being asked if I needed any help, not good. I was there looking for some saltwater fish. Bad Idea. Their selection was very poor and sickly, even the fresh water fish were not looking very good. Questionable legal fish in the store was interesting but Legal????? Due to the customer service and lack of saltwater fish I would not visit again.

The LFS closest to home and basically where I started my hobby.
I have to admit I might be a bit biased about this place, but hey who wouldn't be when you've been buying from them for so many years?
This place has some pretty rare or unusual fish from time to time (More so during spring) for good prices and their fish are definitely of superior quality to Tongs (in the freshwater aspect at least).
Definitely a good place to stop by for anyone around the area and/or looking for another store that also has some good deals.
The only thing you have to worry about though is buying tanks since they stock mainly those jebo and newport things that aren't nearly as good as the American made stuff. -

I like 405 due to their large selection of freshwater fish and very good prices, although their accessories and fish food are slightly more pricey than other places.
Most of their fish are healthy but I did bumped into some sick ones but I guess it's normal since they get new shipments every Monday( at least that's what I was told), so if you want to avoid getting stressed fish from shipping, try to buy at the end of the week.
They have rare stuffs once in a while, but I wish they had plants in their store though and more driftwood selections.
I was able to breed the two Betta I got from this place and I will definitely come back for more fish in the future! -

They have great fish at phenomenal prices...only sometimes they're sick...and they only have a 24 hour death exchange, so you have to be really sure the fish you pick is healthy. Their freshwater selection is the biggest in town. I like to pay cash because they never charge me tax when I do... they also round the price down because I'm "a very good customer." Any fish I buy I make sure to quarantine!

This is the best fish store in LA/OC in my opinion and I've been to A LOT of stores. I always find hard to find fish here much cheaper than anywhere else. I live about 15 miles away, but driving here is always worth it.
I bought some black barred silver dollars yesterday. The usual price for these fish is about $20, but they had them on sale for $10. I bought all of them and they sold them to me for $8 each. If you like to raise monster fish or oddball fish, this is the best store for you. They have stuff that 90% of other stores don't have like black arowanas and flagtail fish.
The prices on the window are already pretty good, but if you haggle a little bit (and they usually let you bargain there), you can get great deals. Oh yeah, the frozen food is the best too. You can buy hikari frozen bloodworms for $2 a pack there and the exact same one by my house is $3.50.
The owners are all cool, especially the older guy with glasses. The owners are Thai (I am too) and the older guy told me all about how he used to sell tropical fish in Thailand and the fish he used to raise in his pond. That guy knows more about fish than any other owner I've talked to. The staff here is great (the only thing is sometimes you have to flag them down to get some help).
Anyway, this store has the best selection and best pricing by far in the area. 5 Stars... Thai people rock! -

Came to this store after reading reviews. Best prices around and I didn't spot any dead fish like other stores nearby. Got a great deal on 6 African cichlids. They were also very helpful

This is one my roommate goes to quite a bit, but I can't trust them.
For one, their fish don't seem that healthy. When my roommate started setting up his saltwater tank, they seemed just interested in selling him as much stuff for it as possible, without worrying about whether his fish would live or not.
I have seen fish there that I am pretty sure are not legit in california, so if you are into walking that legal/moral line, then you might be able to find something here you can't find anywhere else.
It is just a risk, I guess. I won't be buying any stock from these guys. -

405 Fish is good if you are looking for some good fish at a very cheap price. The place is in a strip mall off the 405, hence their name, and offer the best prices around for their fish. You can even negotiate them down if you buy a good many fish there, I would say most their prices posted are suggested retail.
The only bad part is that the fish are not particularly healthy consistantly, and they lack a good selection in saltwater fishes. The dry goods and tanks are on the pricey side as well, and not all well organized. -

I seem to be getting lucky with this place. Other reviewers have said it's either good or so-so, but I've been getting deals here.
I've upgraded tanks and was looking to up the number of my black neon tetras. I called them up at about noon and they had some. They said they were $1 a piece, so off I went.
Browsed around to see what they have before finding the black neons. They were in good shape, though probably close to full grown. Picked up 5.
At the register, the owner rang it up as $7.50. "Wait, didn't you tell me over the phone there were a buck a piece?" He asks the guy who bagged my fish who answers something in Thai and says "Oh. $5 then. Sorry. The usually $1.50 each." I smile as I hand over the money and say "No problem. Just checking."
Fish secured, I bug out for home.Listed in: the SoCal Fish Store List

I like this place. I did not buy fish here as I bought a tank here first and needed to cycle it. The price of the tank was a pretty good deal, but the light has had problems in that it keeps getting water in it and shorting. I even came back and bought a new ballast and fixed it myself, but to no avail. The light shorted ina few months again. It is the fault of a poor seal or somehting. Honestly, I do not blame the store here because I chose to buy a knock off brand.
Anyway, they seemed helpful here as well. I did not go here for fish because I am spoiled by a couple other shops, but if I drove by, I would definately take a look!
It seemed clean, and they seemed helpful. -

Didn't enjoy my visit at all. Selections seem kind of limited, pretty much the standard fare you would expect. Had some weird looking fish there, doesn't seem overly clean or healthy either.
On a side note my opinion could have been tainted by this gaggle of girls constantly emitting loud high pitched noises and running from tank to tank exclaiming how cute this fish was or how fat that one was. Which happened to be perfectly funneled down the aisles of tanks. TERRIBLE.
However, other reviewers seem to be having fairly good experiences here so I'm willing to give it another shot. -

By far my favorite LFS in the OC. Some people have been commenting on weird looking fish--sorry this isn't Petco selling 99cent tetras--this is a real fish store. You will find all sorts of freshwater fish here: arowanas (australian + silvers), green spotted puffers (brackish), cichlids, flowerhorns, bichirs, plecos (limited selection, lots of L200), loaches, and even lungfish. The saltwater is rather limited.
But this LFS has the BEST pricing for livestock anywhere. Sure dry goods are cheaper online, but try to support your LFS. Go a few times and talk to the owner--he will give you a discount if buying a lot.
Wayyyy cheaper than Tong's in FV. -

Lots of fish. Much cheaper compared to chain pet stores. Lots of selection for fish food. Aisles are on the smaller side and the temp is cranked up in the store (for the fishies). The fish guys are nice and at times, hard to understand - English isn't their first language but they're still knowledgeable and are helpful.

I went here to buy my first batch of Red Cherry Shrimp. I asked for 6 RCS and please make sure some are female, it is for my 5 gallon tank. They mistaken what I said as 5 females. It is alright though, one was buried/preggers from the get-go. About two weeks later, all 5 shrimp are doing mighty fine with 20+ shrimplets tumbling across the spray bars. Even though there is that slight English barrier with the staff, they have mighty healthy shrimp. Would come back again :-)

The fish here are sold for a very reasonable price and are good quality. I have had far better survival of fish from here than from the big chain petstores. You can also find some rare varieties here. I love that they have unusual varieties of shrimp too.
I just found out today that they also see live insects, this is awesome because I have a pet chameleon and their crickets are the largest and healthiest that I have seen for sale anywhere. They sell these 15 for $1 which is also a very competitive price. -

I was actually pretty surprised going in here. I thought it be dirtier and dingier, but it was actually fairly clean. Not the greatest selection of saltwater fish and corals, but not the worst I've seen either. Larger selection of freshwater stuff, plus they had a weird golden neon tetra that I've never seen before. I'll be back for those weird tetra's to put them in mom's tank for sure.

This is my LFS. I've been going there for about 7 years now & I get my discounts pretty much every time. Their fish are usually healthy and prices cannot be beat. I do not buy fish equipment from there, just fish food & fish. Check out dr foster & smith website for equipment. or even wal-mart. From time to time, they will get rare fish such as arrowhead puffers, gold nugget plecos, arapaimas, & others..
