As other Yelpers have already pointed out, 401 is definitely a hidden gem! My mom and I were strolling through downtown Burlingame trying to get an early start with holiday shopping. After finishing a late lunch at Il Fornaio around the corner, we decided to head back to the parking lot and came across 401. It's a very cute clothing boutique that almost looks like its own little cottage house.
We walked in and were greeted by the very friendly co-owner (I forgot her name). The store has some cute things and there is 25% sale going on right now! I left with a new heather grey short sleeve silk cashmere turtleneck sweater by Acrobat and a pair of dark denim trousers by Raven Denim.
The store also carries vintage jewerly but they don't have a large selection right now because of the recent trunkshow. I will be going back once they get more pieces.
Make sure to check this cute store if you are in the area! -

I recently started carrying the fabulous trolley bags made by the owner of this boutique. I couldn't' wait to check out her store!! On my day off today I made the drive down to Burlingame to visit 401. My fellow 650 yelpers...if you shop along Burlingame ave. but haven't been to 401...be sure to make it during your next trip. It is located off the main street, but not too far off. The store has a warm, welcoming feel, with lots of cool paintings and one-of-a-kind handbags made by Eddy herself.
Eddy's selections are chabby chic and caters towards the confident women who aren't trying too hard. From lines like Porridge, Hype, Eddy selects styles/colors that create a complete story within 401.
On my fiscal austerity, I still managed to pick up a super cute shirt in the sale bin and a totally cool vintage necklace (one of Eddy's great finds) -

I've been working and shopping and eating my way through Burlingame for the past 2.5 months now, and I never knew about this little boutique until my uber-hip 40 year old boss gave me the d.l. It's not on the main drag, but BEHIND The Gap on Burlingame Ave (you can actually walk through the Gap and out their back doors, then just hang a right at the little square buildling. So, a little hard to find, but let me tell you, worth the curious hidden spot and treasure hunt to get there.
The shop itself is adorable inside. Very spacious and well laid out with art installations by a local girl who does great paintings (and can be commisioned to paint your own private photos, etc, I found out). Plus it smells amazing in there, which only makes you want to stay.
The clothing style reminds me a little bit of Therapy down the street, only slightly more expensive and higher-end. They had a sale rack and a sale shelf, though, which I was obv. all about, and on the shelf were a pair of Indie jeans, which I had never heard of before but loved. Original price: $125 - 75% off. One size left. The odds were against me. They were labeled my size but you just never know, so I tried them on and they fit like a glove. The final price, with tax: $33. 33 DOLLAS, girls! I admit, it was a lucky strike, but if I were you I'd check this place out.
Super nice staff and interesting, pretty clothing tucked away in a semi-secret spot. Maybe soon to be not so secret anymore... -

Edwina ("Eddie") - owner - was totally sweet and helpful. She makes the bags featured in the stores out of recycled remnants. I am now a proud owner of one of her trolley bags ($20 on sale!). Lots of cute clothes and jewelry - I will gladly visit frequently. Definitely some good bargains on the sale racks.

401 is quite the gem. i stop by when i'm on burlingame avenue avoiding the mall. 401 is hidden behind the main stretch. it's right near the back doors of pottery barn and the gap. it used to be the candle store. not illuminations, but this mom and pop candle store. if you want something that is one of kind, stop by. you won't be sorry. plus, edwina (the owner) is quite crafty and makes her own bags out of vintage fabrics. it's pricey, but the sale rack and shelf make it possible to splurge.
