My husband and I tried 400 Beach one night after an event at The Chihuly Collection. I wasn't expecting much because I thought the decor and the menu seemed pretty touristy.

For starters they brought herbed biscuits and butter to the table. They were delicious, and my salad (craisins, feta, jicama, greens and an orange balsamic vinaigrette) was really good too.

My entrée was Tandoori spiced mahi mahi with Island rice (it had beans in it and seemed spiced with cardamom or something) and stir-fried vegetables. Everything, especially that Tandoori sauce which was like a mild curry...definitely could taste coconut milk, was really wonderful.

My husband had a blackened shrimp dish which he said was really good also. I was really pleasantly surprised by how good everything was and I would definitely recommend 400 Beach!

My wife and I had a $100 gift certificate here and decided that instead of letting the gift go to waste, we'd use it for a date night. We had called and made reservations in the morning for a 7:00 PM dinner, but when we arrived we were told we weren't on the list.  It proved not to matter, however, as we were seated immediately.

While we had an overall enjoyable experience, if we would have felt much differently about it if we had to purchase our meal with our own cash.

We started our meal with the Artichoke Manchengo Fondue with crab.  Like most food we ate here, it was OK, but not great. The crab was an afterthought and didn't really add anything to the dish.  Mostly, it was bland and un-offensive.

My wife had Florida Grouper Oscar and I had the Sesame Seared Tuna.  Again, not bad, but not great either.  Bland and unoffensive.

The only item we thing was "above average" was the side of Chorizo Roasted Corn Risotto, but my pure love for Chorizo may have clouded my judgement.

The atmosphere was nice and the portions were large.  I'm glad we went, just to experience a new restaurant in St. Pete, but we most likely will not be returning.

We sat outside.  The view of the bay and the Vinoy from the outside seating is great, and we enjoyed watching wedding parties take pictures outside the St. Pete Fine Arts Museum. However, there were several people smoking at tables next to us, but we can't blame the restaurant for that.

What it's trying to be: An upscale, fine-dining experience with superior ambiance and exceptional seafood.

What it is: Overpriced, but nice place to sit and have a beer and some low-expectation food.

I went there for lunch with a friend and right off the bat, I was impressed. The place looked amazing, everything looked new, we were seated quickly and the service was spectacular. Couldn't ask for more at this point.

But, we're here for lunch...so we got some recommendations from the server and started ordering. For starters we got the Tuna Tataki and the Flash Fried Calamari. The presentation on both was done well, the follow-through on the freshness/taste, not so much. The Tuna Tataki was good, but nothing special and wasn't melt in your mouth fresh like seared tuna should be. The taste was there, just not the freshness.

The Flash Fried Calamari should be renamed to Flash Soaked Calamari. They were barely fried and a bit soggy. This was a turn-off, but again, the taste was there so we made the best of it.

Still hungry and trying to hit up a few other things on the menu (while drinking some beers), we ordered the Baja Fish Taco's with a small side of the Lobster Mac and Cheese and ya know what? These were pretty damn good and made up for the appetizers. There were huge chunks of blackened mahi-mahi in the tacos and as for the mac and cheese, there was practically and entire lobster claw. These two things saved this review from being completely negative.

The beer list for those on tap were impressive.

But honestly, for a seafood place, if you can't get fried calamari right, just close your doors.

Wanted to try this place for some time and was really disappointed now that I did. Sure the place looked nice and there was a good crowd but the service and food was lacking.

Started with the Tuna tataki ($11.95) which was ok, just tuna you get everywhere nowadays, nothing special and served way too warm.

For dinner hubby had the braised shortribs ($19.95) that came out so chewy and stringy he literally could not bite through most of it. Really disappointing. I had the "lobster" mac & cheese ($9)..HA..what lobster?? and a ceasar salad. The mac & cheese was your basic I can find it anywhere mac & cheese with a small sliver of what appeared to be lobster here and there but no lobster taste.

    Really a sad dish!

So no return trips for us. Truly disappointing and really, the only restaurant affiliated with this place that we've enjoyed is the Hangar.

Ever find a place that has good food but bad service?   Or great service and bad food?    You hate going back there but you feel jipped for not?    Yeah well, you will not have that problem with 400 Beach, since the food and service are both a "10".

Traci had the lollipop pork chops and creamed spinach with she mixed together on her plate after cutting up all of her meat in one shot.   She suggested to the waiter that they should serve it in a bowl next time and she is right.    Shannon had something that I don't remember but she liked it and Mo had clams, mussels and scallops over rice.   It looked great.

If you are going on a first day, go here to impress the lady.   The server will make you look like "the most interesting man in the world" without the beard.    He laughed at all of our annoying jokes.    Also, if it is nice enough and  they will unlock the chairs for you, sit out.

Leave room for the bread pudding, it looks so good that you will want to lick it, like Traci did so that you don't have to share it.

They drew me in with the Rock Shrimp Lettuce Wrap they were serving up at Taste Pinellas 2010. They were good. So when I visited after Taste Pinellas, I had some pretty high expectations. I was disappointed.

The service and scenery are great. Gotta give 'em that. The food was nothing memorable. I couldn't even tell you what I had. The only reason I'd go back is for the shrimp lettuce wraps, but after looking at their menu online, no one will experience that. *sigh* Knowing that, I may want to return to have a drink on a lazy afternoon while enjoying scenery. But that'd be the only reason.

I live very close to 400 Beach and have driven by countless times.  I wish I had stopped for dinner a long time ago!  We went for dinner on a night when downtown St. Pete was packed with people for several events.  We had an 8:00 reservation and were seated promptly.

Our waitress seemed to love her job and was full of great tips for menu and drink items.  After looking over the menu, we decided to try several of the appetizers and have a Tapas style dinner.

Running down the list, we had the Blackened Tenderloin Skewers (terrific), Baja Fish Tacos (very tasty), Jumbo Lump Crab Cakes (possibly the best I've ever eaten) and the Lobster Mac and Cheese (good, but not great).

Overall, great dining experience and great food!  I can't wait  to go back and give the full menu a try!

    Highly Recommend!

I went there for lunch and I have to say, I was pleased with just about everything. We started with the artichoke manchego dip with crab (very good), New England clam chowder (OMG good), and calamari (which I don't care for, but my boyfriend wouldn't shut up about how good it was, and he's not usually a 'wow'-er). I had the shrimp Po'boy sandwich. I ate it with a knife and fork (way too messy for the venue!) and thought it was delicious.

The atmosphere, both inside and out, is lovely. Our waiter was attentive and nice, but not the least bit intrusive. I didn't give it 5 stars for 3 tiny reasons:

    1) a little too rich for my blood, but great for more of an occasion
Not their fault at all - that's just my own financial perspective
    2) the ketchup tasted funny, like it was homemade from a
yucky recipe, or had gone bad (can ketchup do that?)
Probably just a small difference of opinion issue: too many years of Heinz for me?
    3) my last water refill tasted very strongly of soap!
Who knows? These things can happen anywhere, and as a stand-alone complaint, I wouldn't hold it against them.

Go and try it! I feel pretty confident recommending it.

Whether their king crab really IS a king crab is debatable. When we asked the waiter where the king crab came from, he said it was from New England! And, that's not really possible since king crab come from the Pacific Ocean. So, either it did come from New England and they lied about it on their menu or it came from the Pacific and they were lying about where it really came from. People  want to make good decisions regarding eating sustainably caught seafood. Seafood restaurant should offer reliable and truthful information about what they're serving.

Read Tampa Bay magazine's that they had the best clam chowder. So I decided to try it, for that reason alone. I admit the clams were delicious, soft and buttery, not rubbery.  The soup itself was very thick, like eating mashed potatoes. Not much flavor. Diced potatoes were a bit undercooked. Clams had to be cut in half with a knife, it's chowder, knives should not be necessary.   And where's the sourdough bread? Nope, none. How disappointing. The service was friendly but slow. My husbands mahi fish tacos were tastier than the chowder. All in all, I wasn't impressed enough to go back for a second try.

I was disappointed.. To be fair, I have only visited here once (today) for lunch. I will try this for dinner soon and update my review.

The space is gorgeous and the service was good. The manager stopped by our table to ask how lunch was. We told her it was fine, I'm not going to complain to a manager unless something goes terribly wrong. It's always good when a manager stops by IMO.

I had a cup of clam chowder soup and the fried oyster Po Boy sandwhich. The chowder was nice, not a lot of clams but there were a few pieces of chorizo that added a nice smokiness to the soup. It was served in a bowl but only filled up halfway. I would be willing to bet that if you ordered the bowl it would be served in the same dish but full. I found that to be kinda cheesy. Serve a cup of soup in a soup cup, not a soup bowl filed up halfway.

The Po Boy is what really fell short. The oysters themselves were, well ORANGE and tiny small. We're talking maybe the size of a dime. They had so much of that weird batter that it was essentially like eating breading inside of a hoagie roll. I gave up on the roll and focused on just trying to eat the oysters themselves. Needless to say I finished quickly.

We asked for tarter sauce for the sandwhich and what came out was not at all tarter sauce, it was really just a dill mayonaise. If you don't want to serve traditional tarter sauce, fine but indicate what it really is so the diner knows. Call a spade a spade ya know???

The other diners seemed to be downtown professionals and "Ladies who Lunch" Kinda pretentious but I really don't care, I was there for an awesome seafood lunch. Which I am still waiting for BTW.

400 Beach gets a thumbs up for atmosphere (we ate at outside and it was perfect) and location. It's nestled near shops, restaurants, and the historic Vinoy hotel. We had a late Saturday lunch and there was still a 10-minute wait for an outside table.

The warm biscuits that came out before lunch were moist and cheesy. I gobbled up two (maybe it was 3, who's counting?) and ordered the baja fish tacos, expecting them to live up to the hype our waiter gave them. Despite cleaning my plate, they weren't anything special. The mango salsa was bland, even when poured over the two tacos. The avocado was smooshed, and there were only two small pieces on each taco. There were tomatoes, lettuce and a sprinkling of cheese, that unfortunately added no flavor. The fish was okay. I went with the side of stiry-fry veggies (in lieu of the slaw and potato planks that come with the tacos) and didn't think they were great either. My friend had the potato planks, which I snagged a few of and they were exellent. Crispy and flavorful on the outside, and warm on the inside. I dipped them in malt vinegar and was content.

Our waiter was awesome, with a sense of humor, but slightly slow returning to the table to refill water and bring and return the check.

You can never go wrong with Bacon...and it's oh so pretty!

The inside of the reastraunt is very nice without being stuffy.  I loved the walls which were covered in stone and the virtual aquariums.

Now the food...for a starter we have the reef sampler.  When it came out I was on the fence but it was delicious.  The reef samplers comes with calamari, shrimp and scallops with the yummiest sauce for dipping.  The brown sauce is the best!

For dinner I had the seafood sampler because I couldn't decided so I felt that would cover me.  It came with scallops, salmon and a crab cake.  Being from Maryland, I know a thing or two about a crab cake.  This was not my favorite (to much of everything but crab).  I ended up feeding the crab cake to the dog, which we had to trick him into eating it....  The rest of the seafood was perfect!.  My salmon was great and the scallops were done perfectly.

The side...I ranted and raved and ate every morsel of the greens on the plate.  They were cooked with bacon at some point cause they had the slightest hint of bacon.  I ended up taking some food with me and I was honestly sad the next day there were no more greens to be had.

    Oysters and Beers!

The beer selection definitely satisfied both mine and the lady's tastes.  With over 20 on tap and a wide selection of bottles it's as diverse a selection as I've seen in downtown St. Pete.

We throughly enjoyed every appetizer ordered. The Buffalo Oysters were spiced perfectly, just the right amount of heat and buffalo sauce as to not overpower the delicate taste of the oysters. The blu-cheese cole slaw topping was not over done and added just the right amount of cool, the perfect accompaniment!  Additionally we ran the full raw oyster gamut finding the Canadian's to have the most flavor and perfect touch of sweetness.  Both West Coast varieties also satisfied the pallet. It was certainly nice to have them served without the usual plethora of toppings, leaving the oysters to speak directly for themselves.  Sriracha however is available upon request.

I'd definitely be interested in returning for lunch/dinner the next time I'm in town.

We had a company function here on a Thursday evening and despite having in excess of 20 people at the table, service and food was impeccable. Located close to the Vinoy, we usually don't head this way when in St. Pete. We now know better and will make 400 Beach a destination dining spot. Seafood chowder was rich and amazingly flavorful. Crab cakes were delicious and enough to have some to take home for snack later. Try this place, you won't be disappointed. Also a good place for a larger group. They know how to handle a larger party without missing a beat.

Sometimes it can be hard to find restaurants when you are away from home, or even challenging to know which locals you can trust for good recommendations.  Luckily for me in St. Pete's I discovered a great seafood restaurant recommended by the hotel.  400 Beach has a decent atmosphere inside, but what I loved most was the spacious patio seating outside that overlooked the harbor.  So peaceful!  The service was nice, my server, Jennifer was accommodating and friendly.  I ordered the seafood sampler at $23.95.  The dish came with probably 1/3 lb of salmon, 3 scallops and a small crab cake.  For sides, the dish had dirty rice (coconut) and asian stir fry veggies.  The dish did not look very impressive, but tasted really, really good!!  I thought that the price was a little high, considering that I was dining in St. Petes and they have an all you can eat Sunday buffet inluding seafood for around the same price, but regardless, I was pleased.  When my meal was over, what was I am assuming the host came over and asked me how my meal was/engaged in conversation.  I appreciated the gesture and will definitely recommend the restaurant to others!

Pros: Great location, Great view, Good service, Delicious Seafood Sampler, Fast service

Cons: Seafood sampler a little pricey for the amount of seafood and vs. other items on their menu

PS Complimentary bread is cheddar biscuits

I went to 400 Beach for a business lunch.  They had a nice lunch menu in addition to their regular menu.  The waiter was attentive and seemed to be working hard to do a good job (at this time they've been open for less than 2 weeks).
I ordered the fish tacos from the lunch menu.  Some of the others at my table ventured off the lunch menu.  All the food came out quickly.  I enjoyed my lunch, and I believe the six others were pleased as well.  My fish was mahi mahi, and was served blackened.  The meal came with mango salsa and fries.  I would order it again, although the new menu needs some exercising from me before I go back to the safe zone.  I'm excited to try this place for dinner one night.

The food here was really good, some of the best Calamari I've had in Florida. The beer selection is also pretty large (with some very good choices). They have a lot of space inside and out, with a nice view of the Vinoy park and the Bay. My roomie and I went on a crowded Saturday night and had no trouble getting a table with a bay view. The service was quick and attentive. We were both impressed with the clam chowder- tender strips of clams, bacon, celery in a creamy, rich base.

We were both on a little bit of a budget (as we always are), but I think it would be a better place to go without thought of cost. It's a great location for a prelude to a night out downtown, and will provide the food you need to soak up a solid amount of beer.

If you want excellent seafood in a good location and love beer, then this is the place to go!

First time here I sat at the bar table for a couple appetizers and some beers, cant judge the menu on a 3 course meal but the aps were all very good. We ordered the crab cakes, manchego cheese fondue, lobster mac n chz and tacos. Would have given it 5 stars except I I went for brunch a couple of weeks later and I was very disappointed. The Brunch bar was messy, food wasn't kept very warm or freshly stocked and they there weren't any oysters (online brunch menu said oysters were included). All in all I would recommend for lunch or dinner but not the place to go for a nice brunch.

Great casual spot for dinner in the heart of downtown St. Petersburg - we tried fresh gulf oysters, crab cakes (infused with goat cheese for additional flavor), as well as crab stuffed grouper.    All the food was tastefully presented and of high quality - for example, no creamy sauces to overpower the fish, and no excessive "fillers" to water down the flavor of the crab cakes.    Price point very reasonable relative to the quality of the food, with service friendly and attentive while fairly quick and efficient.

Nice decor inside, with artwork and fish pictures, and a large dining room with a combination of booths and tables - with no tables too close to others like in some places.   Another place is an extensive list of wines by the glass, as well as numerous beers on tap.

Oh and let's not forget the dessert.  We shared a key lime macadamia tart, and this definitley tasted homemade with a fresh, flaky crust and sweet tangy flavor.

This spot is a winner if you are looking for a tasty meal.

UGH!  I really hate dining in the Tampa/St. Pete area.  This place is one step from being a chain :P  When you ask your server what they recommend and they say "everything" I'm completely put off of my whole dining experience.  Now to the meal- when in Florida especially the west coast- I have Grouper because it' s sooo delicious!  They prepared a decent piece of fish- but nothing truly memorable. The veggies and the rice were as if they were prepared hours and hours prior to my meal- bland and colorless.  The beer selection was mediocre and for the price of our meal I was TRULY disappointed.  I will not return.

Great seafood, great atmosphere.  Not terribly pricy for the beachfront location.  I am giving this 5 stars because I am heavily weighting the location... on a typical sunny St Pete day you get a nice view of the Vinoy, the park, and you're super close to other bars, gelati, etc.  Oysters are great!  The scallop entree is melt-in-your mouth amazing... salmon is great too!  Beer is cold and delicious!  Plus, it is a good place to check out some beautiful women dining outside.
I will take pretty decent food, great beer, and a fantastic view anyday. There is a lot of good dining competition in the area, but this is one place you should keep in your rotation once in a while.

We made reservations for the Easter Brunch at 400 Beach Seafood & Tap House.  The food was good but we experienced some disappointment over the fact that at least three things that were stated to be included in their menu were not available when we arrived.  There was no roast beef, ham, or deviled eggs...all items we had hoped to have at our Easter brunch.  The food they had was plentiful, but I do think the lack of items that were on their menu affected our first experience at this restaurant.  We did speak to the manager and he quickly adjusted our bill for the lack of menu items, however he was quick to state that they were happy with the turn out they had had on this day...to me, he seemed to be saying that it did not really matter.  He was busy and wanted to resolve the problem and move on.  The service was okay...not great.  The day was beautiful and the price was definitely reasonable for the amount of food, but I am fairly certain we would not return.
