One of my favorite restaurants in KC.
The mixed field greens salad was incredibly fresh and well balanced. The ahi tuna melted in my mouth and the sea scallops were prepared perfectly.
Next time, I'm definitely going for the 4 or 5 course Chef's tasting menu. -

40 Sardines is one of my favorite restaurants in Kansas City. The food is amazing, the drink selection is great. They have private dinners in the back with wine pairings and cooking classes as well. Very cool. I have been many times and never had anything bad on the menu, which changes. The chocolate pork ribs are awesome. Try a Boulevard Margarita for a little something different. If you have a party of 6-8 try the table in the kitchen. It is truly a great experience.
Unfortunately they closed it last month. -

I am pretty sure this place closed, I just tried calling to confirm, but it is Sunday so that could be why there is no answer- also I couldn't do an opentable reservation....so I think their demise is likely.
Either way my experience what I expected considering the reviews and their Zagat guide blurb.
The server seemed like he had just gotten up (hair disheveled not really with it, etc)
My pork ravioli was cold, and I did not see any pork in it...my mom's burger was good though.
I also got a Mint Julep to try ad HATED it, didn't drink like ANY of it and the sever didn't offer me anything else and kept it on the bill- nice.
Considering it is closed guess there's nothing else to say, but I'm not really surprised--ESP since their location sucked. -

Holy crap, I love this restaurant. It's fine dining...so it's not easy on the budget, but it is soooooooooooooo good. I've been there three times and I've absolutely loved everything I've had. I was a bit skeptical because the location is kind of odd...it's sort of in a ritzy suburban strip mall - but don't be fooled! It's incredible!

This is where I ended up my first night in Kansas City. I ate at the bar - excellent soup, and lovely duck. That duck died in a good cause.
The bartenders were charming, and the espresso was surprisingly good for a restaurant.
Why 40 Sardines? Well, as Feynman said, if it had been 65, you'd have asked the same question. -

So Michael Smith and his wife were celebrated/ award-winning co-chefs at the American Restaurant in Crown Center. Then they opened 40 Sardines. I'm told that they divorced and she stayed with 40 Sardines and he opened Michael Smith's, where Zin used to be. At any rate, I've long wanted to try 40 Sardines but we live North and it's way South. But last night, Valentine's Day, my wife and I and another couple finally went and it was all that. The first course, tempura artichoke and seared scallop with polenta and raisins, was the best and it was half eaten before I thought to take a picture. Yes, I took a camera just like an obnoxious tourist. I blame Yelp for that. Then came braised duck ravioli, followed by grilled veal flank steak (not milk-fed veal, fortunately) with cauliflower gratin and mushrooms, and for dessert a nutella devil's food cake "with hazelnut crunch". Four courses for two of us cost a hundred bucks even (add tip), but it was worth it. Our guests had the same but they also split a wine pairing, which brought their tab to $125. Honestly, it was all we hoped for and even though the servings were modest we all left very satisfied.
