40 Acres brings art to the people.

I happened to be wandering by and saw a bunch of folks congregating around the front door; as it turns out they were holding a reception that was free and open to the public.  I was surprised to see an offering of Willie Birch's charcoals as well as students' response pieces and artwork. Previously, I had only known his sculptures and color mixed-media pieces. Very cool to experience a New Orleans' perspective from up close.

This place is magic. I will be back for different exhibits and discussions throughout the summer.

Pretty sure 40 Acres Art is closed. I think the owner had some money-related legal problems. The blinds are all closed and I haven't seen anyone in there for many months.

Sucks too, since when they were open they were pretty sweet. I went there once when they were doing stuff for Second Saturday. Not only did the whole neighborhood show up, but they had live music and bbq outside on their patio too. It was an awesome time. It makes me wish they would reopen and continue to host community events.

I came up to Sacramento expressly to attend a reception at the 40 Acres Gallery for artist Flo Oy Wong. I'll be coming back.

Located in Sacramento's historically black Oak Park district, this non-profit gallery aims to educate and to provide a platform for residents to share their stories. The current exhibit, "Whispers of the Past" by Flo Oy Wong, highlights Chinese American history in the Delta, and points out commonalities between Asian and African American communities.

I was particularly inspired to see that Sacramento High youth are heavily involved here through an Apprenticeship program. This program, the gallery, and the adjacent theatre are all supported by the St. HOPE Foundation, started by former pro basketball player (and Cal Berkeley alum) Kevin Johnson. The crowds at the reception and the heavy community involvement are testament that something is really happening here, and it's really making a difference.

40 Acres consistently has great shows featuring both local artists and traveling exhibitions.  I've been stopping by their Second Saturday receptions the last few months and they've always got something interesting going on.  While I enjoyed their current exhibit (Progeny--an interesting mixed media show that was showing in NY before it came here), I'm really looking forward to their African American Quilts show that will be coming in October.
