What an awesome place right in Mahtomedi. It's a classic dinner close to home. The food was a solid 4 stars. I did a chicken dinner with their homemade onion rings. The rings were notably better than most that I've had at other places. The chicken was classic broasted. The service was very friendly. The reason to go to this place though is for the atmosphere and the root beer. They make it themselves.

This was our first time to 4 seasons even though I grew up not too far from it.
I was really excited to try this place out as I had thought about some good fried chicken all day.  This was definitely the best fried (broasted) chicken I have had in quite a while.  Even the breast meat was quite juicy.  The breading was hot, crispy, and very well seasoned.  The mashed potatoes were real and the gravy rather tasty.  Coleslaw was killer.
Why only 3 stars then?  Well this was mostly due to the onion rings and a few other tidbits.  We ordered onions rings for the entire group (4 adults, 2 small children).  They were absolutely disgusting.  I am 95% sure they were quite underdone.  They were not that deep golden brown and were gummy and nasty in the middle.  And they forgot to season them.  Normally I would send them back but the other people we were with don't like "making a scene" so I just rode it out.  Our friends both had burgers and they said they were fine, but definitely nothing special.  You could tell they were frozen, preformed patties.
Service was rather friendly but quite slow.  It appeared that a lot of the servers were high school aged and I'm ok with that as it created a laid back and casual atmosphere but a bit more training might be needed.  I'm at home now, but I bet our plates still aren't cleared off the table.  And is coleslaw supposed to be brought well before our meal like it was a salad?  Not in my book.
After we left, I turned to my wife and asked her if she got her garlic toast with her chicken.  Nope, they forgot that all together for both of us and I never realized it until after.
Root Beer was really good but so unconscionably sweet that it could only be taken in small amounts.  I needed water just to get me through.
It's a nice family place and I won't hesitate to return but I will be better prepared next time.  I am very curious to try the onion rings again as all the reviews here say they are excellent.  And I would definitely get that glorious chicken again.  They offered take out family sized portions with sides for the Fried Chicken too so I may have to partake in that some lazy Sunday evening.

Food is great but little pricy, but for the amount of food that you get it is a good value.
It is a nice treat .... especially the root beer floats!    --- They are an endless bottom, that is if you can handle more than one or two! :)

3 Seasons no longer exists. It's called 4 Seasons now. As you correctly guessed, the change came about when they decided to open yearlong.

4 Seasons has been around since my parents were in high school, back when it was a classic drive-in with the girls on rollerskates bringing burgers and fries up to your window. The menu hasn't changed, although now they include a rather tasty bison burger. The food is mediocre--nothing awe-inspiring, but certainly adequate. The only reason to come to 4 Seasons is for the delicious root beer. They brew the root beer in mass quanities--so much you can even go there just to pick up a few gallons without sitting down and drinking it with a meal. If you do choose to eat a burger with your root beer, they don't stiff you with a single glass and then charge for refills. No, not at all. They keep the root beer coming without anyone asking for more. The waitresses are notoriously generous with the refills, and no extra cost is added to the bill.

The root beer itself is smoky with notes of caramel, vanilla, and brown sugar. The quality is remarkable. I'm positive it must come from a decades old recipe locked away in the owner's safe. It's without doubt the best root beer I've ever tasted--although I wouldn't call myself an expect. (Is anyone a root beer expert?) All I know is that it's damn good stuff. And I'm not one to liberally splash superlatives into my reviews.

Its my understanding that everything down to the root beer at this place is homemade.

So I'm on my holiday visit and I get this bizarre craving for fried chicken ... I say bizarre because I probably eat fried chicken about once every 5 years, maybe.  My mom takes me to this place and says, "they do a broasted chicken ... don't worry, you won't know the difference" and I can't even be offended because the truth is, I still don't know the difference nor do I care.  chicken, good.

The point is that this place was so good, I have every intention of repeating my bizarre chicken craving upon each future visit.

My family has been going for years! We would take our boat across the lake (White Bear), anchor it, then hoof it to the restaurant, and bring back a bunch of awesome food to the boat. We always ordered:

    - The "Lem" burger: Like a Cali burger, but with this amazing special sauce.
    - Homemade root beer, which you can buy by the gallon! The best root beer in existence.
    - Banana cream pie: Homemade and divine.
    - Broasted chicken. Pretty good, not great, but tasty.

To sum up: The root beer makes this place worthy of 4 stars. Seriously good stuff.

Just recently went to Four Seasons and absolutely loved it!!!!  Their root beer is unbelievable, and our broasted chicken was the best we have ever had.  Also the homemade onion rings were phenonemal!  Will definitely return, even though we live in St. Paul.  It's worth the drive.

A cheese and frozen-vegetable sandwich actually made me ill. How does that happen? I literally gawked at the price of said sandwich. At least there was entertainment- a very petty spat between waitress and food plater. I want my money back!

Yes, everything is homemade here, and I think you can still get a gallon jug of homemade root beer to go. I used to eat here every week (20 years ago) ,  when you could get a 1/4 chicken basket with fries, texas toast and some of the best coleslaw I've had.for 3.00 and change, pretty good deal considering the food is so good. The price for the same 1/4 chicken basket is over 9.00 now, but there are frequent specials, which are a pretty good deal . I like the place, it used to be one of the few existing true drive in restaurants left around the cities. I would consider eating here every week if my income had doubled, but alas, it has not. Guess i'm getting old. As of May 2010, a  patio has replaced the "old School"  drive in (can't sit in your car, push a button on an outdoor menu and have a "car hop" bring food to your car on a tray that sat on your rolled down car window) . The patio looks nice, but it seems a shame to loose this little bit of history. Change isn't always better. The restaurant name has changed from "Three seasons" to "Four seasons". Great homemade root beer.
