Loved it. Like an hidden jewel in a boring strip mall.

I was amazed by the quality and freshness of their fishes. It's indeed the best fishes I've ever tasted.

The young waiter that Monday night was cute and charming. That also helped make the whole experience even nicer. He even helped me figure out the secret behind making a tempura ice cream (won't share- sorry)

Pricey compared to other sushi places but if you look for quality then this is the place to go.

It's been awhile since I visited here last time - due to my commute between LA and Sydney for the last few years.  I had to apologize for not being back here sooner!

I noticed they've done renovation around the entrance which added more open space at the sushi bar area and you can acutally see outside through the windows.  The back-end dining area also got extended which looked nice.

Saito-san welcomed me and my friend with all the good food in spite of the last minute call.  He served us namako (sea cucumber) with ponzu/daikon radish sauce, then halibut sashimi with pink peppercorns + crushed rock salt (yum!), then asari clam with dashi broth (the broth was subtle, but really tasty) - great starters/appetizers before moving to sushi.

Every single sushi he served was amazing.  We actually ate a lot.  I was so busy eating and forgot to take photos other than uni (sea urchin) which by the way was top-notch.  He uses different soy-sauce (and he makes/prepares by himself) for different sushi - based on the fish's texture/flavor, etc.  I really enjoyed his shari (sushi rice) flavor and the one-bite size...I cannot stand some places serve shari like the size of your fist or rice-ball which is just not right.

We finished our meal with sesame ice cream which was rich, but nice and creamy.  Yes, I will be back soon next time!

I Love love love this place!  Chef Saito's creations are always top notch and on par, if not better then any other high end Sushi place in Los Angeles. This is my #1 sushi choice and will always come back for more.

I miss the old host Jun who just moved back to Japan after always greeting and serving us with excellent service and home-like respect.

Here's a shout out to Ken and Alex too, awesome and friendly sushi chefs.

It is my favorite and regular sushi place. I have tried most decent sushi restaurants from the SF valley to OC, and 4 on 6 has been my first choice in SFV since my first visit 5-6 years ago.

If you consider yourself a sushi connoisseurs, like delicate white fish, and willing to spend $80-100, just sit in front of Chef Saito and try his Omakase. You never regret.

Score another happy trip to 4 on 6 for us.

I love this place.  The quality is the best, hands down.  Sure it's pricey.  But worth EVERY penny folks.  Order what's on special if you are on a tighter budget, but trust me you still will not be disappointed.

This time, I got octopus (tako), spicy scallop roll, rock shrimp tempura, scallop sashimi and the fella and I split a BSC roll.  He also got several sashimi items (mackerel, yellowtail, etc.) for himself and our bill was under 90 bucks including tip and our beverages.

I would have given my usual 5 stars but they were out of one of the items my fella wanted.  Of course it was late on a Sunday night, so I'm sure that was probably partially our fault too, lol.

We still will come back because we love eating here and everything is so damn fresh.  Never had a bad meal and I can't imagine that happening any time soon. :)

Outstanding sushi experience!  We sat at the bar and were served by Saito, a jazz lover and sushi maestro extraordinaire.  Having just viewed the documentary on the three-star Michelin awardee Jiro of Tokyo subway fame, we were primed for a unique sushi repast.

Saito did not disappoint with his ambrosia-reminiscent delicacies like sea  bream, spicy tuna biscotti, albacore belly, octopus and other treats.

    An inspiring dining experience!

Well I guess as your duke I am obligated to write a review here.

Place is great, fresh, tasty, friendly service.

The lunch special is usually not enough, neither is the Premium lunch special but I recommend getting a bowl. Either the Salmon bowl or the Albacore bowl. Both are extremely tasty.

Also every time I have been there, after the meal they brought over complimentary hot green tea which is a great way to end a sushi lunch.

    FANTASTIC!

    Make sure to:
    - Come here with a maximum party of 4 people
    - Have a flexible budget
    - Sit at the sushi bar
    - Order "omakase" (translation: chef's choice)

Then, prepare to be blown out of your mind with a roller-coaster of the most subtle flavors, an adventure for your senses -- the zen poetry of sushi!

Standouts from our last meal (though everything was heavenly, these are the dishes that immediately come to mind):
    - Scallop sushi, with truffle salt
    - Albacore belly sushi
    - Chef's own handmade salmon "lox" sushi, with a wallop of cream cheese

Our bill came out to about $130 per couple (including ample amounts of Sake).
Is this too much for an EPIC feast?!
We will be back as often as we can afford it: ROCK ON, 4 On 6!

I decided to try this sushi restaurant after reading the rave reviews.
I consider myself as a sushi connoisseur as I frequent many sushi restaurants globally.
I was disappointed at the quality of the sushi ( stringy) and the salmon skin salad was pathetic. For the price they charge it is not worth it. I don't understand the other rave reviews. For me I had better for less money.

If you want colorful rolls, cream cheese, cute names, anything with Sriracha sauce, don't come here and then give a poor review.  That's like complaining that a high-end sports car doesn't come with any cup holders.  It's not for you.  I know this sounds snobby, but that's just how it is.  (I personally cannot afford this place as much as I want to and only come here during bouts of fiscal irresponsibility.)

Come here if you're serious about fish.  Come here if you can, are willing, or want to learn to taste complexity in milder flavors.

as far as sushi goes in LA on the "pricier" side, but you get what you pay for.
    Fish is always spot on.
I'm not an Uni fan, but my wife is.... and they either have amazing uni, or it's not served. (FYI- this is a very good way of rating a sushi restaurant, as Uni is one of the "dishes" that isn't always great... a good sushi restaurant will not serve Uni (sea urchin) if it isn't top quality)

Also extremely friendly staff and owner.

If budget is on your mind, this isn't the place for you. If you plan on spending $125 for two with one drink per, then it's the place for you, as it doesn't get much better in the valley.

Iroha in N.Hollywood is comparable (slightly cheaper, and not quite as good (fish), but love that place as well)

It doesn't get much better than this.  The service is good and it's easy to make conversation with the always friendly sushi chefs, especially Saito-San.  The food is always consistent and I always leave satisfied.  Saito-san also makes sure that all the fish is fresh, he sometimes has his fish delivered by plane to him if he isn't satisfied with the local quality of fish that day.  Although their food always tastes good, don't come here when you're hoping for Japanese take out.  You won't find Cream Cheese or Krab here.

I've come here many times over the course of about 10 years and its always been good.  We can't come here often though since, well.... I'll be blunt, come here too often and you will go bankrupt.  Personally I think its worth it for the quality of food you get, but my wallet disagrees.

Oh!  I almost forgot the sushi!  The sushi here is amazing.  It's always fresh, and the fish never smells fishy.  (That's a good thing) This restaurant serves many other dishes too besides their amazing sushi. The steak is tender and juicy, while the tempera is light and crispy, not floating in a pool of oil.  Four on Six is by far my favorite Japanese restaurant and I will be coming back for the rest of my life.  (Hoping to god it will still be here.)

After hearing and reading great things about 4 on 6, I was anxious to give it a try,
A very beautiful sushi bar with the counter the customer eats off of is made out a beautiful curved wood. But looks only go so far, how is the sushi is what matters.
The saying goes you get what you pay for.
4 on 6 is a little more expensive then most sushi bars.
But so is there quality of fish.
They have allot of different fishes flown in directly from Japan.
The staff picked up on that i was a rookie in there establishment and bent over backwards to make sure that I had a enjoyable experience.
The tuna and yellow tail melted in my mouth.
    The tuna dip was amazing.
The albacore was some of the best I ever had.
Everything we tried was delicious and we tried allot !!
I will defiantly be back soon.

Don't listen to people who complain about small portions or high prices.  If you know great sushi, you will agree that this is worth every penny!  And it's not as expensive as some of the trendier sushi places on Ventura.  Can't say enough good things!!

I've been coming to this place for years and have enjoyed every single visit!  I usually order sushi, whether sitting at the bar or a table, and have also tried other Japanese dishes.  Everything they serve is good, unique and big on quality.

Mister M, I agree with you!  This is not your standard American sushi; it is simply yet artfully prepared and so flavorful.

Btw, different regions in Japan prepare sushi differently.  Some with  slices of fish over larger forms of sushi rice (Tokyo style), and others over smaller forms of sushi rice. Saito San does it the way I like it best!

There about 723,799,393.3211 sushi places on Ventura Blvd. This place is, I'm sorry to say, about on par with the rest of them. I've been here three times now, had one great experience, one bad experience, and one so-so experience.

When you've got a good, attentive chef taking care of you, the place is great. On an off night, though, you might get a second- or third-string chef who really doesn't know what he's doing. I ordered the same yellowtail special on two different nights and ... the resemblance wasn't even close. One was gorgeous, one was mangled and almost inedible.

Can we be honest for just a second -- I've eaten a lot of sushi in L.A. and, man, there's not a lot that distinguishes one place from another. There just isn't. The fish quality is usually good-but-not-great, and you can have wildly varying experiences in a given place from night to night. And given that this place is a little on the pricey side, might as well go somewhere else.

4.5 stars.  Very enjoyable from a VERY pick sushi eater.  I liked that they had some unusual items from Japan (ie: Alfonsino, black snapper, etc.).  All was very fresh.  Reason for 4 stars versus 5 is that I felt there was too much rice with the sushi and that some of the fish could have been a bit cooler.  Great place!

This is my go-to sushi spot in the west Valley.  Prices are a bit high (but not insane like some places) but the quality is superb.  I always get their 5-piece sampler plate, which is made up of whatever fresh specialties they have today (usually stuff I haven't heard of before).  The dinner salad, which for some reason isn't on the menu, is a perfect example of tangy, delicate Japanese salad dressing.  I've never tried their rolls, but if you're looking for perfection in simple sushi, this is the place.

There is a secret club of Sushi connoisseurs (you know who you are) who are on a never ending quest for the greatest slice of fish on the planet. This slice is simple, yet complex. The texture is firm, but not too chewy. The chef has dressed it with subtle yet explosive flavors that are sometimes barely visible...sometimes bold and in your face.

This club does not welcome members who believe that spicy tuna rolls are really worth eating, but always welcomes newcomers who finally see the Sushi light. There are no regular meetings except the chance meeting of a fellow connoisseur at some "off the beaten path" sushi bar, like 4 on 6, whose chef is a proud member of the club.

I would have never expected that a place with a name like "4 on 6" (coming from the owners love of Jazz Guitar...4 fingers on six strings) would have some of the best sushi anywhere. Off the beaten path is an understatement in describing the location which can only be found if you are looking for it. I must say that I was tipped off by Luke Bs' review...Thanks Luke!

I don't have to describe what I was served for lunch on my very first visit, those in the club should just know that the fish of the day dictate the menu and that the variety is unique and seasonal.

Saito, the chef, is kind and talented and the only sad part is that I have only just now discovered this gem of a restaurant after 15 years of searching for great sushi in the valley.

I have been eating sushi in LA for over a quarter of a century, lucky to discover the best spots - Katusya, Matsuhisa, Nobu - before everyone else did.  Sadly, as these became the "it" place to be, most of what each one offered - specifically the ability to form an intimate relationship between the sushi master and the loyal customer - eventually disappeared.

Not so at 4 on 6.  New customer or old, Sushi Master Saito, co-owner, Jun, and their wonderful staff, take the time to make everyone feel welcome.  And the fish - traditional perfection!  This is not the latest Japanese-Fusion trend of the month scene.  Sushi 4 On 6 is the place to go when you are craving the freshest fish exquisitely  prepared so the fish, not the topping, is the taste that sings through.

So the next time you are in Encino waiting in a long line to get into Katsuya for a bum's rush through a meal heavy on the sauces and your pocketbook, do yourself a favor and head across the street to Sushi 4 On 6.  If you do, you are in for a taste of something rare and priceless; real sushi, loving served by real people, at reasonable prices, to their growing family of customers.

Ok. Let me agree with the previous reviewer when I say I am a bit reluctant on posting a review of 4 on 6 for purely selfish reasons but in the true spirit of Yelping I must be honest and share the even my most secret hidden gems.

4 on 6 is hands down my favorite sushi in LA! Chef Saito and Jun have won over my heart with the amazing service and my belly with the phenomenal quality! Literally all is took was one time to know this will be the only sushi I eat in the LA area.

Upon arriving my companion and I were a bit taken aback by how hard the restaurant was to find in the shopping center. It is tucked alll the way behind an Office Depot making it virtually impossible to see from street view. Once inside the decor is relatively modest but with good reason because the food you are about to experience is all your senses are going to need.

As I usually do when trying new sushi(especially good sushi) I decided to go ahead and  order "omakase" so I could sample what the chef thought were the best selections of the day. A good idea? Indeed! He started me off with the more light selections(basic but still extremely fresh and amazing) and then moved on to the more delicate and rich selections. Every single item served got better and better. I cringed at the thought of what my bill was going to be but continued eating anyway. I COULD NOT STOP!

I particularly liked that after being served the fresh sweet shrimp, the head was nicely tempura battered, fried and brought out to me and a nice little post course extra. From what I have been told this is traditionally done in Japan but I have never had this offering done for me in the US and it's unfortunate because it was delicious!!!

I would say that the fact that 4 on 6 is a bit expensive would be a down side but in this case it is not. You get much more than what you pay for. I lust after this sushi and now have found my sushi heaven for life. Just my luck that I don't even have to travel more than 15 minutes to get to it!

This was quite possibly the best sushi I've had outside of Japan. First and foremost, put your big boy pants on when you walk in and get the omakase, and Chef Saito will take care of you. The quality of the fish is on top notch and better than more well known places like Nozawa's Sugarfish. Some of the more memorable things I had that come to mind are the blue fin tuna, Japanese salmon (pre-tsunami), and aburi toro (slightly seared (with a blow torch) fatty tuna). The service is amazing, and there's live music on Sundays.

I'm so reluctant to post this, as my little sushi bar will be inundated with customers, but it deserves to be noted.

Saito-san, Jun, and his team have a terrific sushi bar in Encino that's tucked away behind an Office Depot.  The fish is always amazingly fresh, and often he will get specials flown in from around the world-- Japan and Spain seem most popular.

The decor is minimalist, and the restaurant is quite small, so be sure to arrive there not starving, as sometimes there is a bit of a wait.  Regardless, the wait is worth it!

Ask for the daily specials and recommendations.  For the adventuresome, it can be a great introduction to many different types of fish (and Sake) you won't find at other sushi and Japanese restaurants.

We finally got around to trying this place night. It was terrific, but slightly more expensive than we are used to spending on sushi. The quality was so supurb that I understand why the prices are high. The place was mostly empty, hence the other reason for the high prices.

I had a few pieces of hamachi. We had a catapiller roll, an eel roll, a BSC roll with about two pounds of scallops on top. The best thing we had was their No. 3 roll that was avocado, crab salad and salmon but instead of soy paper or seaweed it was wrapped in thin slices of cucumber. The crunch of the cucumber was terrific with the softness of the middle.

We love 4 on 6! Good, fresh sushi because sushi chef Saito buys only the freshest fish from Japan.  The sushi is pure and traditional.  He does however, divert from tradition and makes a gravlox (smoked salmon) with a dab of sour cream and some green radish on top.  It is fantastic!  The biscotti is one-of-a kind and truly wonderful.

4 on 6 is a family place and if you come in on a regular basis, they know you, your family and most of the sushi bar will be friendly with greetings.  It's like a Japanese "Cheers"

Try it and you'll be pleasantly surprised.  We've also had several celebrity sightings there.  Nick Lachey and his brother dined there right after the famed break up with Jessica.

I was down in Encino for a friends wedding and this joint came highly recommended by some of the folks we were staying with.

I'm not a big sushi fan but my lady is so I figured I'd suck t up and go with her and wound up being completely blown away.  I didn't eat much, but I did try the black pepper albacore which was like eating no other food I've ever tried in my life.  I don't know what they did to it but it was like the flavors were changing while I was eating it.  it was amazing.  I regret not taking more advantage of it and if I'm ever back in the area I'll be sure to do so.

a must try if you're in the area.

4 on 6 is a hip little place with original artwork on the walls that you can buy, prices listed right next to them.  There's always some nice mellow jazz music playing (the owner is a big jazz fan and the restaurant's name is a tribute to jazz) and on weekends, I believe they sometimes have live music.

Onto the food: the fish is excellent.  Superfresh, with specials flown in from Japan.  The sushi lunch comes with a good number of pieces of nigiri along with the roll of the day.  But what I really want to talk about is their beef teriyaki...

Now, I generally don't talk about cooked food in a sushi bar, but 4 on 6 has *the best* beef teriyaki I've ever tasted!  It blew me away.  I had one of those moments where a big smile comes across your face and you start giggling like a little girl because you never realized that a certain food could be so good.  I actually had to sit back for a little bit after the first bite to contemplate this epiphany of tasty goodness and rethink my entire concept of what teriyaki is.  The beef itself was a quality cut of meat, no thin slices of skirt steak here.  It was served in good sized chunks that were tender and tasteful.  The teriyaki sauce was excellent and allowed the flavor of the underlying beef to come through, unlike bad teriyaki where everything is drowned with sauce to hide poor quality meats.  I actually wanted more sauce so that I could enjoy my rice with it...

If you're in the Encino area and have a craving for sushi, definitely try 4 on 6 out.  They have a sushi/beef teriyaki combo for lunch that will give you the best of both worlds.  A little pricier than other places, but worth every penny.  Note that it's located towards the back of a strip mall, but you'll be able to see an office depot (or staples?) from the street.

My ideal sushi spot. Great  fresh fish. Light jazz tinkling in the background. No lines. Friendly chefs.  You get it.

I recommend the pepper albacore, black snapper, any mackerole, and the mochi, of course... green tea.

The prices are reasonable, the quality of the sushi well worth it. The fact that it's in a strip mall and tucked away out of sight, that it's not the hippest joint in town, that it's local and unassuming - those are its best attributes.

Sunday nights they have live jazz. It's a good first date test. If you take her there and she recognizes the sublime delicacies of 4 on 6 sushi, and digs your thoughtful conversation, than you have a keeper. If she says the sushi is just alright and talks about the trendy sushi joints she's been than lose her number and delete her from your facebook.

I think it was the yellow-tail with the jalapeno & ponzu sauce.
I say, "I think" because after the first piece... I don't remember anything at all. My mind went blank from pure ecstasy.
It was by far the best serving of sashimi I've had in 2-3 years.
If I could afford it, I'd probably order about 4 of those for myself.

I picked this place based on the pretty good yelp reviews I saw.  The place is at the very end of a strip mall and if you blinked you might miss it altogether.  The service was fine, waitstaff was friendly and helpful.  The food was ok to not good.  The scallops were undercooked in the scallops, shitake, asparagus dish and the sauce was too overwhelming.  The scallops on their BRC roll was warm on the very top, center part and then cold everywhere else.  We ended up sending it back.  The octopus sushi was ok, but for $7 I've had better quality lots of other places.  My friend liked the steak with rock salt, garlic and ponzu.  I feel like I went to another place than the raving yelp reviews but I have to say the quality of food here was poor.

This place is good.  Some of the best spicy tuna I've had.  The sushi chefs and the host are characters as well.  This place is rarely busy too.  The quality of fish is good but has been declining as of late, their hand and cut rolls, as well as their entres are great.

The one thing I am not a fan of is their actualy sushi.  I'm not a fan of wasabi, and they like to place generous amounts of it in their sushi (just their sushi, not the rolls).  The place is also a bit overpriced as well.

All in all I enjoy this place, but it's a bit out of my budget to go regulary.

Hands down, the best sushi in the valley!!  I wandered in one day not knowing anything about 4 on 6, and by my third piece of sushi, I knew I'd be a regular for years to come.

The fish is incredibly fresh, the owner is very friendly (whether you're a new customer or a regular), and Saito-sama is a magician!

Eat whatever you want here, and you will love it.  Whatever you do, make sure to end your meal with an order of the pepper albacore -- it will be the best bite of fish you have ever had in your life.  And that's not an exaggeration.
