This place is great to work out at. I came here at least once a month and boy let me tell you, your body will get its ass kicked into shape. The instructors are great. I was scared the first day I went mainly because I am a female 5'2 120 pounds. So I am small and they place looks very old school, I felt very intimidated, but once the class started everything changed. The instructor was hard on me, he took no pity that I was a girl. He treated me like everyone else, but he did make a point to check up on me, to motivate me, to push me and I like that better then getting special treatment and feeling like I can't do it.
I think if you want to work out hard, be pushed to the limit and get your body to where it wants to be. This is the place. If you want special treatment, if you want instructors to go easy on you then this is not the place... -

I've been going here consistently for a little over a month now and have been to a few other boxing gyms in SF so I thought I'd weigh in (Weigh in, get it? Heh heh).
The gym is modest in size, but very well-equipped with about 15 or so hanging heavy bags, two double-end bags, two uppercut bags, two speed bags, two full-size rings, mirrors, weights, and other misc strength and cardio equipment, dressing rooms and showers. No standing heavy bags, but this is the most well-equipped fight gym I have been to so far. Lots of free street parking close by and a light rail which makes up for the location being a bit out of the way.
The classes are offered all day on the hour and are conditioning-centric, meaning that emphasis is placed on getting in shape while learning some boxing technique. The classes are taught by different instructors at different scheduled times (check the website for schedule details) and each instructor has his/her own unique teaching style. If you plan on going most days of the week this is nice because the workouts/instructors change daily and the classes don't feel stale even if you attend at the same time each day. I am in good shape and consider the classes to be challenging. If you aren't in good shape, don't worry though because the instructors are very accommodating for beginners. Tip: If you're more advanced and have scoffed at wimpy "hard" classes before, try Yohon's conditioning classes. I promise you it will be hard and you'll see real results attending his class consistently, even twice a week.
3rd Street regularly offers "fight nights" which are great for those looking to fight competitively. I will warn you that you will need to get your sparring license *first* if you plan on getting in the ring and doing any real sparring or fights. 3rd Street is especially strict about this rule, but they will help you with the paperwork.
Overall, this is a great boxing gym to train at with good value and good instructors. You will feel good about paying your membership dues here because the instructors are good people and well-qualified to train you, whether you are looking for a fun, intense way to get in shape or looking to launch an amateur (or possibly professional) boxing career. -

I just completed boxing boot camp (with the exception of two days because I was sick).
Before I signed up my friend recommended that 3rd Street gym was a great place to get in shape.
Me being 165 pounds was not necessarily a bad thing if the weight was all muscle (it wasn't). Rather all in my gut.
I had to make a plan and Boxing Boot camp was apart of my solution.
Boot Camp was Monday through Friday 600am to 730 am. Despite the intimidating name, Boot camp welcomes all people who work at their own pace. Though the pace often gets sped up with the encouragement of the staff - Paul and Ed are great for that...
The other part of my workout consisted of weight lifting or cardio @ college of san mateo on Monday Wednesday and Friday from 810am to 900am.
After four weeks of the aforementioned here is the Conclusion:
Weight Loss - From 165pounds to 149pounds
Jump rope - 15minutes to 30 minutes
Strength - Definitely stronger and I have a four pack! -

Hi all,
I'm a boxing gym owner from Ottawa, Canada. My gym is http://www.finalround.ca . I've been in the boxing game for 12years, competed at the national level and travelled to Cuba any 5-6 other Canadian cities for boxing. I've been in upwards of 50boxing gyms.
3rd Street Boxing Gym is in the top 3 nicest/best gyms I've ever been to. The staff is extremely helpful, the gym is gorgeous and the equipment is world class.
I dropped in and worked out with Oscar and the competitive program. My workout was
2 Rounds Shadow Boxing in the Ring
2 Rounds Sparring (Note: The guys were very controlled and it was lots of fun)
2 Rounds Focus Pads with Oscar
3 Rounds Heavy Bag
3 Rounds Speed Bag
3 Rounds Double End Bag
10 Stair Runs
10 Sprints
2 Rounds of Core.
Absolutely incredible ! There was also beginner/ cardio classes going on at the same time with a mix of 50/50 men and women. I've taught well over 1000 boxing classes and this one was extremely well run and well done. The coach kept the class engaged, made it an awesome workout and made it fun.
This is everything a boxing gym should be. If you want to try out boxing or you're into boxing and need a place to work out. Look no further.

My first contact with 3rd Street was an email to Kris, the office manager, about coming by to see and chat about membership. Outright, she was really friendly and welcoming. When I came in, she laid it all out and was really casual about, "Check it out, try a few conditioning classes, see how you feel". I never felt pressured to sign up right away and they even provided rope and gloves.
The classes tend to be mostly guys but I love that. I want to work hard and there's no whining when tough guys are involved. No one treats me like a delicate flower and that's exactly what I was looking for. I can't do ten GREAT, real, push-ups yet but I still got yelled at for slacking just like the other guys in the class.
I'm sure I look like SUCH a girly girl but the trainers are more interested in my getting form right and pushing myself. It just makes me want to work harder even though I'm not there yet physically. I will be. And I just officially signed my one-year contract last week. Couldn't be more thrilled. An hour goes by fast! -

You're wondering and wondering, but the best thing to do is jump in the fire and see what cooks. I used to go here a while back, but money and other obligations (or bad habits) made me have to step away.
So I've recently signed up again and thrown my tax return at an opportunity to join again. The 3 things that had me come back to Third Street Boxing gym are the great staff, a great boxing atmosphere, and a great location.
Everybody has been very helpful and accommodates whatever your goals are whether it's losing weight via cardio boxing or trying to get into fighting shape via cardio boxing and sparring. The folks here will push you, but respect your physical limits at the same time.
The location is great especially if you drive because parking can mostly be found within a block or two. On weekends at opening time there is always parking close to the front. Then there is also Muni which has a couple buses stopping within 2 blocks of the gym which I take advantage of sometimes.
This place caters to everybody from youths to elders, men and women, and anybody with an ambition to better their lifestyle. To ease your decision making, if you're looking for a place that will improve your physique and outlook on life through some fun workouts and challenges, this is the place for you. I'm just happy to be back. Good luck and you'll be surprised what your body is capable of. Go off on that bag! -

Dam this place has tough workouts! I consider myself to be very athletic and have been competing in martial arts for 20 years, but their workouts never cease to amaze me. I am looking forward to signing up for a boot camp in the near future as well as to start training for competition, but for now the evening classes are doing their job!! Great instructors!

If you are like me and the idea of doing the same damn thing at the gym is exhausting enough to make you not want to bother, you should check this place out!
I went here today for the first time. They were having an event and I was promised a real kick ass work out and free sandwiches at the end. This is a SERIOUSLY AWESOME place to get my ass into gear and I am really excited to go back again. I was pretty intimidated when I first walked in, but the people were friendly and enthusiastic about the fact that we were going to be non stop hardcore working out for the next four hours or so, so I had to be too.You have to understand, I am a weakling, its pretty pathetic at times, and I thought they were going to just blow me off, but everyone was so cool.
After the initial warm up didn't kill me, I knew I was going to really benefit from the work out. We split into groups with special work outs(boxing, weights and sit ups, medicine balls, fun floor activities, pull ups...) and switched around. They made sure everything was getting worked out! I loved the trainers, they were loud, funny, and made sure you were doing things properly and not giving up. Paul, Laura, Yohon, and Ed were four very different and very cool people who love what they do and it shows. I need someone to yell at me in these kinds of places. I need to be challenged. I won't walk away from a challenge.
I spent four hours in hell but I'm gonna look super hot next month on my vacation if I keep this up!
If you're looking for truly knowledgeable and passionate people who are serious about fitness and have any interest in boxing and doing a FUN and DIFFERENT workout, I highly recommend Third Street Boxing Gym! I never thought in a million years I'd be punching someone in a boxing gym. I highly recommend it for the stressed out types like myself who need a good punching bag once in awhile. Punching people is just fun sometimes. Just check it out! Best workout ever! -

Where do I start......well, I can START by saying i used to be 245 lbs but just after one 3 week bootcamp I am a toner 235 lbs!!!
The classes are usually 4 weeks but because it was close to Christmas the last one was only 3 I think. I am taking their current class as we speak. The workouts are very diverse and down right fun. The staff is very helpful and friendly. They truly care about your health and well being. Don't come to bootcamp hungover cuz your not gunna hear the end of it! That said, I'm not going to lie, the hardest part for me is waking up. Morning classes start at 6am-7:30am. I believe there is an evening class but i don't know what time it starts but give them a call I'm sure you can find out. Once you get there and start warming up everything else seems to go by fast and you're having fun and getting in shape at the same time. I feel so much better after. I can breathe a lot better too! And since the class is so early, I manage to get so much done during the day.
Looking good and being healthy is not easy people. It takes hard work and discipline but if your looking for results then 3rd street boxing gym is good start.
IT WORKS FOLKS!!! -

I'm sorry 3rd Street, but I must deduct one star. Not all of the reasons for this deduction are your fault, however, so perhaps you can take some consolation in that.
The first reason is that Gloria no longer teaches classes there. I miss her workouts, which made me whimper like a little girl because they were so hard. Gloria, if you're reading this, I REALLY enjoyed your classes and miss them very much!
The second reason is my move over to Polk Street Gym as my new boxing gym, and I like Polk Street a bit better.
Polk Street is closer to my house. Of course, that is not your fault, 3rd Street. In fact, it is part of your charm and street cred that you are so close to Bayview/Hunters Point.
Also, I was a regular at 3rd Street for about 3 years, and the owner, Paul, never once said hello to me. I didn't let it bother me, and it still doesn't really. However, on my first day at Polk Street, the owner, Simon (Paul's former business partner at 3rd Street) made a point to walk up and say hello, tell me he recognized me from 3rd Street, and to welcome me to his gym. That was pretty cool.
I wish you the best, 3rd Street, and I still endorse this gym highly.1 Previous Review: Show all »

The bootcamps are great mix of ever changing strength, cardio, agility training. Lost 35 pounds, strengthened my core, built stamina to run 10K on a regular basis, eliminated my back and neck pain, improved my blood work results over six months through several boot camps.
The regular afternoon classes are very focused and efficient. Definitely recommended in between boot camps. Also in the afternoons, for those who want to get better technique in the ring, they offer excellent training as well.
The focus here is not on commercial "make you feel good" practices. They push you to your limit and take pride in teaching boxing. -

If you want to change your mind and body, this is the place!! The trainers at 3rd street are the best. They will teach you the skills you need to truly get the best work out of your life. You'll sweat, and burn calories like you wouldn't believe. This is with no question, the hardest, best workout i've ever had.
If you want to change your body in 6 weeks, the bootcamp is THE BEST way to do it. A mix of intense cardio and strength training. I'm not a morning person, but I dragged my butt outta bed everyday! It's worth it.
Or, if you're looking to become an amateur or professional boxer, this is the place! Paul, Ed and all the other trainers have the knowledge and teaching skills to take you as far as you want to go.
I really can't say enough about how wonderful my boxing family is. -

If you are like me and need an angry Irish man yelling at you to aid your goal of getting into the best shape of your life - this place is for you.
I am a former college athlete and thrive in a place where they demand that you put the work in. But as you continue in the classes, you will find that you will start to demand more of yourself. The trainers instill that high standard in you.
The morning boot camp is a must for people looking to shed the pounds and to test their personal limits. Work hard and you will surprise yourself. -

Lizzy C whoops my ass and I like it every time.
I trust a woman who goes rounds and spars with all her all.
When I first saw her at the gym, she was sparring with the next contestant of the Golden Gloves. I felt like I was in Rocky and I had a whole lot to learn from her. Blood from the other contestant stained her white shirt, but she shrugged it off.
She trains hard but with a sensitivity a woman provides. No nonsense.
Favorite quote by Lizzy. "Just because I am a woman and you got different equipment, doesn't mean I can't hit shit."
I can see the difference in myself after a short time training. I have better stamina, my figure finally wore something body conscious recently, and my legs look great in heels. Plus, the added bonus of pounding my stress into a bag is a meditation and healing all in itself.
I love it when she yells the numbers of the reps I'm doing in my face.
I love it when she tells me to run for the umpteenth time.
I love it when she puts those gloves on my hands and says, there's soap in the bathroom for later, bur for now, go at it, kid.
I am grateful and getting stronger.

Five. Motherf'ing. Stars.
I can't express how amazing Third Street is in one simple Yelp review. People, I have lost 45 FREAKIN' POUNDS from taking their fitness bootcamps over the course of a year. (I went from a size 12 to a size 4!) The bootcamps are hardcore and intense, but if you stick with the program and eat healthy, (and stay true to not smoking or drinking in training a la Rocky) you WILL see results, and fairly quickly!
I am now no longer the fat girl that was pointed and laughed at with frequency, and am proud to report that I have gone from the slowest obese, chronically wheezing runner in the bootcamps to one of the first people in.
Over the course of a year training here (and at their sister gym, Titanium Training Center) not only did I lose enough weight to amount to that of a small child. I grew stronger physically and mentally, started believing in myself (I know that sounds corny, but whatevs it's true!) and I gained an AMAZING community of friends and comrades that I feel closer to every day.
Everyone at Third is very friendly, welcoming, and big-hearted. People will understand and accommodate you if you're still learning the ropes. It's kind of absurd that you can meet someone in class, proceed to beat the crap out of each other, and then have an awesome time laughing about it over coffee afterwards, but it is often a happy, commonplace occurrence.
If you want to remain fat, please go to 24 Hour Fitness, take their lame-ass aerobics classes that result in no weight loss whatsoever and a lot of embarrassing pink spandex under bad halogen lighting. Now, if you'd actually like to lose weight and have a lot of fun doing so, then join the only gym in the city that matters: Third Street Boxing.
And...don't be afraid to come up and say hi when you do. :) -

I took a boxing class and it kicked my a$$. -Sarah F.
This class is awesome- challenging, fun, no-frills. My instructor was Irish and hard core. Major cardio work, lots of push ups, bag work, and sparring. I honestly thought I was going to throw up a few times. I left feeling very proud of myself and didn't feel guilty at all for the Mexican food I ate afterwards.
P.S. Girls, even though it's mostly guys in the gym, I didn't feel uncomfortable. They're really nice here. -

Hitting, punching, and kicking sounds really good to me lately so I decided to visit 3rd Street Boxing Gym to see if I could put these feelings to good use.
Good use indeed!
I love this place. I do enjoy yoga and pilates, and I can definitely enjoy the luxury spa like gym environments of some health clubs. . .I mean, unlimited plush towel service, eucalyptus steam rooms, and cucumber slices in chilled water, come on, who doesn't love all that?!
When it really comes down to it though, there is something so intoxicating about a no frills, raw gym space that oozes sweat (literally!), no pain-no gain, grunting workout space where people are there to get down to business. 3rd Street Boxing Gym has that effect on me.
I really needed to get out of a funk one day and decided to start boxing. This is the best decision I've made this year. No matter how long my day, or how worried or stressed I'm feeling, the minute I start to jump rope before class, it all leaves me with the sweat that drips to floor. Each class challenges me and forces me to give more than I think I have to give both mentally and physically.
The insructors are helpful, supportive, and make sure you give your all. The music is great. I love the way I feel after a class; exhausted, revived, refocused, and centered. -

Talk about the ultimate confidence killer. 3rd Street broke me down harder than Jay Leno in a comedy face-off. For years I have trained using weights, barbells, free-weights, stones, bricks, 4X4's, belts and cables. For years I thought these were medieval torture devices. Then I came to 3rd Street and discovered I wasn't shit.
I have to be (and probably still am) one of the worst boxers to walk the streets of San Francisco. I have zero rhythm, zero skills and apparently zero ability to kick anyone's ass. It's no wonder I grew up with my face in books instead of a punching glove. I'll say one thing though ... despite me being the Vanilla Ice of the boxing ring, I have never had a better workout.
The trainers are extremely patient and willing to teach so long as you are willing to give your blood, sweat, tears and your left kidney. Joking aside, I have never endured anything more trying than some of the classes here. 3rd Street has taught me a new dimension of fitness and can certainly inspire confidence to those who have had the same place (3rd Street) break it down.
I am indebted to you 3rd Street for challenging me to something I will never be a pro at but am willing to give my heart to. My membership ran out, but someday I will return. -

The trainers at 3rd Street make it hurt so good! I just finished up their 6 week boxing boot camp which ended in a Fight Night. It was a great experience which whipped me into incredible shape. I only cursed myself 2 out of the 30 mornings for waking up at the crack of dawn for this 90 minute workout. It challenges the mind and body, and it's an incredible learning experience for those of us who have little to no boxing experience.
Their other gym, Titanium Training Center, is equally outstanding. The trainers are great, each one with their own personality and style, and I like the diverse skills that each of them brings. -

Before I moved out of the area this was the gym that I used to go to. I started out doing a 6 week, 5 days a week, bootcamp and let me say this was the most intensive hardcore workout that I EVER did in my life but it got me into shape. The evening boxing classes are a good workout too. I love this place and the only reason why i left was because I moved too far away.

I don't actually go to this gym, but my roomie/RCTV co-host Danny does. If you check my pix you'll see his body type: not really suited to grueling workouts. I used to box in my teens, and the regimen isn't for the faint of heart, especially the sparring in the ring...
Still, when he announced he was going to do the Bootcamp thing to trim some weight and gain some stamina, I thought it was a great idea, and encouraged him. Particularly, I was curious to see him actually compete in the end of camp boxing competition--for better or worse. Could he toughen up and get busy in the ring, or would he get blown out?
As time went on, he filled in the guys from the Gym on our TV show, and other activities, including our videography and editing services. One of the owners, Simon, took a strong interest and traded Danny some free time in return for us coming down to shoot the Bootcamp boxing competition at the end of the 6-week training period. We all agreed to do it for the fun and challenge, and the fact that we wanted to add to our resume' a bit.
Plus, the rest of us wanted to see Danny in the ring too. Again, Danny's never been one to fight, much less even confront anyone.
Fight Nite arrived, and all 4 of the RCTV team went to capture the action, and see our boy rock in the ring.
It never happened.
It seems he somehow finagled his way out of it. Oh, he'll tell you he didn't have an opponent or whatever, but I/we think he cut a deal or something.
He's since done several more Bootcamps, and even has a regular membership now. But he still hasn't done the Fight Nite, except behind the camera.
Curious indeed.
That being said, I have to say that Simon and the gang really have taken my boy in, and we've all formed a friendship. They invite us to parties and shindigs they throw, and are a great deal of fun to hang with. Kudos to that. -

I don't know much about boxing that I didn't learn from watching HBO, but this place feels like what you want a boxing gym to feel like.
The teachers are crazy. They do everything you do. Paris is a nut. The two owners are funny, and serious about boxing. I wish it was easier to get to without a car, or I would try and go back.
I was also surprised by how many women train there. It wasn't all testosterone. But it was all kick ass.
They opened another gym on Polk St. Maybe it'll be easier to get to. And if it's the same owners, then it's worth checking it out. -

3rd Street Gym is legit. I've been doing strength training in a gym either solo or with a PT for the past 15 years on and off. The last 3+ years I've been consistent working out 3-5 times a week a well known SF gym and trying to eat well.
After seeing an add for a "boxing bootcamp" in early January I decided I needed a change in not only my routine but my workout environment. So I called up and was invited to try a free class, which included some cardio drills, sparring, and core/ab exercises. I left feeling great elected to sign up for the 6 week bootcamp class.
I'm now halfway through after completing 3 weeks, and have never felt better in my life. Higher endurance, stronger, more confident. Taught by Paul and Simon, two incredibly nice yet demanding Dubliners, the 90 minute classes are the best and hardest workouts I've ever experienced. I actually look forward to the Mon-Fri classes that start at a bird chirping, jaw dropping 6am (that's pretty early for me at least). A typical class might include (after the required 15 min warm up of jump rope) sets of body squats or ab drills as a group, running through the streets of Dogpatch and Potrero Hill, doing rounds on the bag or sparring with a partner. There's something about training with a group of people that drives you to push yourself harder.
The gym itself is no frills, but has everything necessary to facilitate a killer workout. Multiple bags, a couple rings, pull up bars,etc...
Whether you need a change or just want to try something different I highly recommend giving 3rd Street Gym a try. Give them a call, hook up a free class and you will likely leave as a new member. -

Yeah baby, this is what a real workout is all about. I felt like I was in a rut with my workouts at another gym I attend relatively regularly (and occasionally teach some classes there also). I dance, I run, I cardiokickbox, I yoga (is that a verb?). . .none of them match up to the ass-whooping to which I subjected myself tonight. I like a challenge when I work out, so when I felt the instructor getting on my ass, I loved it! This place is no frills for sure, which means that you're there to get your ass kicked and nothing else---then again, why would you work out if that weren't your purpose?
My only complaint is that they are not closer to my house. Who am I kidding? They're worth the trip across town, so I'll definitely be back at some point. -

This is a well run gym that uses modern and sensible training methods. Each workout includes a good warmup, boxing specific drills, and cardiovascular, flexibility, and strength exercises.
I found this place via an ad in the SF Bay Guardian for a 4-week boot camp in the summer of 2006. It was a very memorable and positive experience. I was 44 years old, and it had been over 20 years since I had trained 5 days a week for any athletic program. Paul and Simon's demanding and structured program was just what I needed.
What other gym requires that you show up, on time, to exert yourself 5 days a week, from 6AM to 7:30, with the threat of humiliation and punishment if you are late or miss a class for any reason?
Getting in a ring to fight is pretty intense, unlike anything else I have experienced. Both humbling and exhilarating.
I was happy to repeat, doing their 6-week program in the summer of 2007. I have not yet tried their new Titanium Gym, but plan to do so soon. -
Review from charlie A.
I fully endorse everything about this place. I participated in a few of the 6 week bootcamps and daily classes and i have to say that their workouts are legit. Like many, my main goal was to get back in shape as quickly as possible and third street definitely helped.
More than getting in shape, it is great to learn the skill of boxing along the way. I have always disliked fighting, but everything that the sport of boxing encompasses grew on me.
Paul, Simon, Ed, and the rest of the staff are great and will teach you as much as you're willing to learn. If you are looking to get back in shape or mix up your work out routine, i definitely suggest third street.
Although i moved out of the area and have become a bit lazier, i do miss waking up at 530 am and doing the classes out in the rain. -

I've done two bootcamps at 3rd Street Boxing Gym, and have found everything about it to be top notch. The classes are thorough, well-rounded and often very intense. The activities are varied and it never gets boring (after two 6-week sessions I'm still learning new things every day). You will use every part of your body in tons of different ways. The workouts are just what I like - minimal equipment, maximum activity and fitness.
Paul and Ed are both masterful trainers: they'll push you very hard, and you'll be challenged greatly and often. They are also supportive, attentive, and they provide a great mix of fun and just plain hard work. They're both particularly excellent at teaching the skills of boxing. Most importantly, they are great motivators - they won't let you slack off and they'll make you work harder than would ever be possible on your own. While I haven't done other bootcamp-type programs, I really can't imagine that it's even possible to work harder or accomplish more than you would in this one.
The gym itself is somewhat basic, but that's what I like about it - it's a place to go to work, not a place where you'll find fancy exercise machines and TVs. The facility is totally nice, clean, etc., just in sort of an old school, no frills way. Honestly if you need a lot of creature comforts you might not love it there. But if that's not too important to you, then I can guarantee that you'll get great boxing instruction, phenomenal workouts, and you will meet people who, like you, are there to work.
I started going to 3rd Street because at age 40, I realized I needed to develop better fitness habits. I've absolutely started doing that, and I've also cultivated a genuine interest in and enjoyment of boxing. While I haven't been to any other boxing or fight gym, I will say this: it is obvious that everyone at 3rd Street is the best at and takes great pride in what they do. And it's a pleasure to work with people like that. -

After years of working out, dance, kickboxing, etc... i have found boxing to give my body the workout it needs as it does get more difficult to keep in shape as I climb into the 40's. I started off with classes and moved on into the bootcamps, which I love! Hooked on getting my ass kicked at 6am daily! I tell all my friends; if you want to get over a breakup or job loss.. jump into a boxing bootcamp and you will be fine!!!!
When Im unable to get to do a camp I have the option of evening classes during the week which are just as challenging! Unlike some yelping yelps.... I dont actually join gyms to find friends nor insist everyone says hello to me, teaching me how to box properly is good enough for me. However I do acknowledge and appreciate that when attending the BC and classes at this gym I am surrounded by genuine, kind, and supportive staff and fellow gym members. I remember my first class i was a bit nervous about not keeping up with everyone, but the instructor and other female members were so helpful and patient. There is a welcoming feel to Third Street Gym, something i have never felt in a gym before. One more great thing about this gym is you never see an idiot with a cell phone or ipod on the floor and they have boxing not food shows on the telly! -

I decided to sign up for the 3rd Street boxing bootcamp after taking a couple (ok more than a couple) months off exercising. I thought this would be a great way to get back into a fitness routine. I was right! I couldn't walk the first week but I am now into my fourth week and can really see/feel a difference! Both of the trainers Paul and Ed are great, they are tough on you but it's supposed to be tough! They do a good job of mixing up the workouts so that it is always challenging and new. I am now a member of the gym and plan on signing up for the next boot camp which I believe is in late Feb/early March. I highly recommend this gym and bootcamp if you are looking to get into shape or take your current workout up a notch. It is worth every penny.

Their BOXING BOOTCAMP is serious. I have only worked out harder when I was in the US Army, the pushups, situps, running, and punching at 6:45am are for real. Simon and Paul are excellent motivators and it was worth every cent to step into the ring at their final fight night.
For anyone looking to get tough & get into terriffic shape in 6 weeks this is the best choice of all.
It is well worth the money and time commitment you will be in much better shape at the end of the training.
5 Stars for the Fellas from Dublin.

Actually, 10 stars! Always lookin forward to my evening workouts at 3rd street. Started back in April 09 and can't get enough of these classes (this review is long overdue). Classes are an hour long- the entire hour is an intense workout that you'll be so proud of yourself once you're done!
As the majority of prior yelpers have stated, I will most def. agree that all the trainers are excellent! I only wish I lived closer to sign up for the bootcamp, and to attend more frequently. Best classes I've ever taken, and the best gym I will continue to patronize! Job well done guys (and Gloria, too! she's my idol) -

Hands down best gym in San Francisco!
Doctors, lawyers, soccer moms, plumbers, and people off all walks of life converge at 3rd St. Boxing to get in shape, lose those pounds, or just simply to hit some bags. Very friendly staff, and the owners are two no-nonsense Irishmen who are great at what the do.
Definitely check out one of Simon or Paul's classes, very intense and extremely high energy. The Manager Ed is great at helping you out around the gym and offering any pointers or encouragement.
First class is free, so come on down kick your butt into shape! -

I do the boxing bootcamp.
It's intense, it's hard work and you will be pushed to your limits, but it's all worth it. You will feel stronger, faster, fitter, healthier. You will exceed your expectations and become a 'new' you.
I've been going to conventional gyms for years, but at the 3rd Street Boxing Gym I finally found a place that actually works for me.
Boxing is like life. You win some you lose some, but you always gotta get up and keep on fighting.
Paul and Ed, the instructors are terrific. No bull, no mamby pamby, just great training and dedication to the sport and this who try.
Thanks you guys... -

This place is awesome. Trainers and staff are courteous and helpful. What you put in, is what you get out. I am enjoying the challenging yet rewarding classes. After 3 months of twice a week training, I feel more fit and actually look forward to the workouts.

If you've decided that it's "time to start working out" and are having a hard time getting motivated, do yourself a favor and try 3rd Street Boxing.
I spent my whole life thinking that I did not enjoy sports or exercise, but after two classes at 3rd Street, I was an addict. Not just to boxing, to the gym overall--the staff is welcoming and helpful, and the more experienced boxers there are friendly and encouraging. The gym is gritty and real. People go there to BOX.
Cardio Boxing classes are intense! Each one gives you a full-body workout. Throw yourself into them and you will be amazed by how quickly you see and feel progress. If you need a jump-start, the unique blend of pain and fun that the boot camps provide is well worth the price of admission. They provide great conditioning and a solid foundation in boxing even if you've never done it before. Paul and Ed both have a knack for pushing you to the limit without going too far (even though it feels like too far).
This gym has changed my life. I am significantly happier and healthier than I was when I started going there about six months ago and am looking forward to a long relationship with 3rd Street. These guys would have many more five-star reviews if everyone there would take a break from working out long enough to write one!
Seriously, I can't say enough great things about this gym. Did I mention that both your first Intro Boxing class and first Cardio Boxing class are FREE? Do yourself a favor and stop by. You have nothing to lose aside from some sweat and body fat.
Thank you, Paul and Ed! -

I used to believe that fitness boot camps are for urban yuppies dissatisfied with their professional lives and looking to challenge themselves physically and mentally outside the office environment. The 3rd Street Boxing Gym's 6-week boot camp knocked that notion right out of my skull like a swift left hook to the ear. This boot camp is everything it claims to be and more. You get worked senseless every morning with a combination of running, calisthenics, push ups, ab work and boxing drills. The gym is hot and grimy, and this is a no-frills, no nonsense atmosphere. That being said, I had a fun, fantastic experience and left each morning feeling exhilarated, in that rummy, sweat-soaked, get me to a shower kind of way.
The trainers have the good cop/bad cop routine down pat. The two lead trainers switch off from week to week, and assistant trainer Ed (bless his heart) is there daily to offer gentle reassurance when you need it and one-on-one advice to refine your moves. My only critique would be that the weekly switch off of trainers made for a slight lack of continuity; I felt like one trainer was just getting to know my strengths and weaknesses, and then you don't see him again for a week. However, some people may find the slightly different training styles refreshing.
The six week course culminates in an actual boxing match (participation is optional) and a fun after-party, which is a great opportunity to buy a beer for the guy or gal who you pummeled or were pummeled by. A word to the wise. I was under the impression that after six weeks of crazy intense workouts and knocking about in the gym, I would be well prepared for a boxing match against a live opponent. I was wrong! Getting in the ring is as serious as a heart attack, and for any beginning boxer who wants to attempt it, I would recommend putting in some good hours of sparring practice over and beyond what is offered in the class (the trainers recommend this too; I didn't heed them). I've heard that the boot camps used to be far more intense, but due to a high attrition rate, they've actually scaled back the workouts to accommodate more skill levels (lord, I can't imagine what the workouts used to be like!). Also, this boot camp is gaining in popularity and sheer class size makes sparring and bag work more difficult. At any rate, if you want to box at the end, get those extra hours in, as difficult as it seems.
A final word of caution: there is only one shower at the gym and there is often a line, so if you don't live nearby you may want to find another option for showering before work.
I definitely plan to come back for another boot camp and to check out some evening or weekend classes to fuel my newfound love of boxing. Although not for the faint of heart, I would recommend this boot camp for anyone looking to get in mad shape, push their limits, and learn a fun new skill while they're at it. -

for months, or has it been over a year .. i have dreamt to workout in this gym ... finally, my boxing buddies and i decided to try it out tonight .. and wow ... it was everything we dreamt of .. and more!
the atmosphere is definitely high energy .. an overall fighter ambiance, oozing with adrenalin, serious, grungy, yet neat, air was very warm, like being in a sauna ... a wonderful boxing ring, dense and firm fighting bags, lots of space, lots of boxers ..
we took a boxing class that made us sweat like we were plowing acres and acres of land ... the emphasis was not only on form and stance, combinations and bag works, it was combined with conditioning, a lot of running ... stabilization of the central core, simply an overall holistic workout ...
the instructors are serious and do not tolerate slacking and chatting in between rounds ... "this is not a social club", one of the instructors would say ...Listed in: my sfboxing gyms n beyond

I've been spending more time here than home lately. Authentic, spit-bucket boxing gym, with great trainers, fighters and gym members.
