I've been training and fighting out of 3rd street for over two years. Its a cool gym with good sparring and good trainers. I wouldn't want to box anywhere else in the city.
The trainers at 3rd Street make it hurt so good! I just finished up their 6 week boxing boot camp which ended in a Fight Night. It was a great experience and whipped me into incredible shape. I only cursed myself 2 out of the 30 mornings for waking up at the crack of dawn for this 90 minute workout. It challenges the mind and body, and is an incredible learning experience those of us who have little to no boxing experience.
Their other gym, Titanium Training Center, is equally outstanding. The trainers are great, each one with their own personality and style, and I like the diverse skills that each of them brings.
Their BOXING BOOTCAMP is serious. I have only worked out harder when I was in the US Army, the pushups, situps, running, and punching at 6:45am are for real. Simon and Paul are excellent motivators and it was worth every cent to step into the ring at their final fight night.
For anyone looking to get tough & get into terriffic shape in 6 weeks this is the best choice of all.
It is well worth the money and time commitment you will be in much better shape at the end of the training.
5 Stars for the Fellas from Dublin.
NO PAIN, NO GAIN.
I've been a member at 3rd Street Gym since May 2007...the reason I signed up initially was because they had a female instructor, which put me at ease, since I thought there would be tons of guys there....it was cool to know that there were woman that were into the sport. During my first weeks there, it was GRUELING. Alot of the excercises I couldn't do, and I was discouraged. But the instructors and owners were very kind, and push you to give your all. Months later, I feel that I do well, and truly enjoy and look forward to going to this gym.
I've really wanted to join a boxing gym for probably 10 years but never was in the right place at the right time. I moved to SF just a month ago and decided this was the time to get after it. I joined 3rd Street probably a week later. There's nothing more I could have asked for - a legit boxing gym where people are serious about their workouts but relaxed and accepting of a complete rookie like myself. I definitely was nervous it would be uncomfortable if I wasn't a hardcore boxer but it was just the opposite. This is the best gym experience out there hands down.
Talk about the ultimate confidence killer. 3rd Street broke me down harder than Jay Leno in a comedy face-off. For years I have trained using weights, barbells, free-weights, stones, bricks, 4X4's, belts and cables. For years I thought these were medieval torture devices. Then I came to 3rd Street and discovered I wasn't shit.
I have to be (and probably still am) one of the worst boxers to walk the streets of San Francisco. I have zero rhythm, zero skills and apparently zero ability to kick anyone's ass. It's no wonder I grew up with my face in books instead of a punching glove. I'll say one thing though ... despite me being the Vanilla Ice of the boxing ring, I have never had a better workout.
The trainers are extremely patient and willing to teach so long as you are willing to give your blood, sweat, tears and your left kidney. Joking aside, I have never endured anything more trying than some of the classes here. 3rd Street has taught me a new dimension of fitness and can certainly inspire confidence to those who have had the same place (3rd Street) break it down.
I am indebted to you 3rd Street for challenging me to something I will never be a pro at but am willing to give my heart to. My membership ran out, but someday I will return.

I don't actually go to this gym, but my roomie/RCTV co-host Danny does. If you check my pix you'll see his body type: not really suited to grueling workouts. I used to box in my teens, and the regimen isn't for the faint of heart, especially the sparring in the ring...
Still, when he announced he was going to do the Bootcamp thing to trim some weight and gain some stamina, I thought it was a great idea, and encouraged him. Particularly, I was curious to see him actually compete in the end of camp boxing competition--for better or worse. Could he toughen up and get busy in the ring, or would he get blown out?
As time went on, he filled in the guys from the Gym on our TV show, and other activities, including our videography and editing services. One of the owners, Simon, took a strong interest and traded Danny some free time in return for us coming down to shoot the Bootcamp boxing competition at the end of the 6-week training period. We all agreed to do it for the fun and challenge, and the fact that we wanted to add to our resume' a bit.
Plus, the rest of us wanted to see Danny in the ring too. Again, Danny's never been one to fight, much less even confront anyone.
Fight Nite arrived, and all 4 of the RCTV team went to capture the action, and see our boy rock in the ring.
It never happened.
It seems he somehow finagled his way out of it. Oh, he'll tell you he didn't have an opponent or whatever, but I/we think he cut a deal or something.
He's since done several more Bootcamps, and even has a regular membership now. But he still hasn't done the Fight Nite, except behind the camera.
Curious indeed.
That being said, I have to say that Simon and the gang really have taken my boy in, and we've all formed a friendship. They invite us to parties and shindigs they throw, and are a great deal of fun to hang with. Kudos to that.

I don't know much about boxing that I didn't learn from watching HBO, but this place feels like what you want a boxing gym to feel like.
The teachers are crazy. They do everything you do. Paris is a nut. The two owners are funny, and serious about boxing. I wish it was easier to get to without a car, or I would try and go back.
I was also surprised by how many women train there. It wasn't all testosterone. But it was all kick ass.
They opened another gym on Polk St. Maybe it'll be easier to get to. And if it's the same owners, then it's worth checking it out.

Man, I hate gym contracts! And the company that 3rd street uses is horrible. I'd give 3rd street 4-stars - but their financial place set them back a few. Why? .......well, I signed up for a 6-month contract and stopped going because some GIANT Russian guy slammed my wrist so hard during a class that I couldn't throw a straight-right for 2-months. (he was 6' 200lbs+, I'm 5'2 @108 lbs). Needless to say, I knew it wasn't the gym's fault that this guy was an idiot - so I let my membership finish up without making a stink about it. Turns out 3rd street isn't as small as I thought. I'm used to boxing at places like King's - where no one is trying to profit off you as a "member." I've been boxing for 10 years, and I've always gravitated to the smaller, grittier boxing gyms. I guess I'm a little bummed that 3rd street isn't as small as I thought. I'm sure I'll recant most of this later - considering that I'm writing immediately after canceling my contract. I just spent an hour trying to get my contract canceled. It would be nice to get my hundred bucks back - but I know that will never happen. If I sign up again: A) I'll pay in cash, month-to-month only & B) I won't get stuck partnering up with some giant-wanna-be-boxer who doesn't know how to throw a punch. I'm off to the Valencia street gym, I need to hit a bag for a while. Augh. In the end, boxing is a wonderful sport and 3rd street will bust your butt into tip-top shape. All of the trainers are great and the staff treats you like you belong (no matter how long you've been boxing) - just think '24-hour fitness' when signing the contract.

Lizzy C whoops my ass and I like it every time.
I trust a woman who goes rounds and spars with all her all.
When I first saw her at the gym, she was sparring with the next contestant of the Golden Gloves. I felt like I was in Rocky and I had a whole lot to learn from her. Blood from the other contestant stained her white shirt, but she shrugged it off.
She trains hard but with a sensitivity a woman provides. No nonsense.
Favorite quote by Lizzy. "Just because I am a woman and you got different equipment, doesn't mean I can't hit shit."
I can see the difference in myself after a short time training. I have better stamina, my figure finally wore something body conscious recently, and my legs look great in heels. Plus, the added bonus of pounding my stress into a bag is a meditation and healing all in itself.
I love it when she yells the numbers of the reps I'm doing in my face.
I love it when she tells me to run for the umpteenth time.
I love it when she puts those gloves on my hands and says, there's soap in the bathroom for later, bur for now, go at it, kid.
I am grateful and getting stronger.
Opportunity knocks when ability is applied.

Hitting, punching, and kicking sounds really good to me lately so I decided to visit 3rd Street Boxing Gym to see if I could put these feelings to good use.
Good use indeed!
I love this place. I do enjoy yoga and pilates, and I can definitely enjoy the luxury spa like gym environments of some health clubs. . .I mean, unlimited plush towel service, eucalyptus steam rooms, and cucumber slices in chilled water, come on, who doesn't love all that?!
When it really comes down to it though, there is something so intoxicating about a no frills, raw gym space that oozes sweat (literally!), no pain-no gain, grunting workout space where people are there to get down to business. 3rd Street Boxing Gym has that effect on me.
I really needed to get out of a funk one day and decided to start boxing. This is the best decision I've made this year. No matter how long my day, or how worried or stressed I'm feeling, the minute I start to jump rope before class, it all leaves me with the sweat that drips to floor. Each class challenges me and forces me to give more than I think I have to give both mentally and physically.
The insructors are helpful, supportive, and make sure you give your all. The music is great. I love the way I feel after a class; exhausted, revived, refocused, and centered.

I used to believe that fitness boot camps are for urban yuppies dissatisfied with their professional lives and looking to challenge themselves physically and mentally outside the office environment. The 3rd Street Boxing Gym's 6-week boot camp knocked that notion right out of my skull like a swift left hook to the ear. This boot camp is everything it claims to be and more. You get worked senseless every morning with a combination of running, calisthenics, push ups, ab work and boxing drills. The gym is hot and grimy, and this is a no-frills, no nonsense atmosphere. That being said, I had a fun, fantastic experience and left each morning feeling exhilarated, in that rummy, sweat-soaked, get me to a shower kind of way.
The trainers have the good cop/bad cop routine down pat. The two lead trainers switch off from week to week, and assistant trainer Ed (bless his heart) is there daily to offer gentle reassurance when you need it and one-on-one advice to refine your moves. My only critique would be that the weekly switch off of trainers made for a slight lack of continuity; I felt like one trainer was just getting to know my strengths and weaknesses, and then you don't see him again for a week. However, some people may find the slightly different training styles refreshing.
The six week course culminates in an actual boxing match (participation is optional) and a fun after-party, which is a great opportunity to buy a beer for the guy or gal who you pummeled or were pummeled by. A word to the wise. I was under the impression that after six weeks of crazy intense workouts and knocking about in the gym, I would be well prepared for a boxing match against a live opponent. I was wrong! Getting in the ring is as serious as a heart attack, and for any beginning boxer who wants to attempt it, I would recommend putting in some good hours of sparring practice over and beyond what is offered in the class (the trainers recommend this too; I didn't heed them). I've heard that the boot camps used to be far more intense, but due to a high attrition rate, they've actually scaled back the workouts to accommodate more skill levels (lord, I can't imagine what the workouts used to be like!). Also, this boot camp is gaining in popularity and sheer class size makes sparring and bag work more difficult. At any rate, if you want to box at the end, get those extra hours in, as difficult as it seems.
A final word of caution: there is only one shower at the gym and there is often a line, so if you don't live nearby you may want to find another option for showering before work.
I definitely plan to come back for another boot camp and to check out some evening or weekend classes to fuel my newfound love of boxing. Although not for the faint of heart, I would recommend this boot camp for anyone looking to get in mad shape, push their limits, and learn a fun new skill while they're at it.

this is a pure-A bad ass gym - whining / bitching is just not allowed, and you will have no choice but to feel much respect for the establishment in general , the trainers (esp. zo, simon, ed and miguel, though i havne't met all of them) and the fellow trainees...for some reason, people who wilingly come to get worked at this gym don't tend to be soft or pretentious, go figure.... it personally changed my life and would recommend it to anyone who wants to get in shape or to gain mental and physical toughness and self-discipline
boot camp is awesome, as are the evening classes - once you get into shape and get basic technique down, they have one on one trainers that will take you to whatever level you want to push yourself

My heart belongs to the American Kick Boxing academy (San Jose)... but when I moved to San Francisco, I was pleased to find 3rd Street Boxing. Great gym, positive atmosphere, good facility, friendly staff and owners... not bad for a couple of Irish lads.

I really like this place. Run by two fellow Dubliners, the gym has a very positive and hardworking atmosphere. I used to train at my university boxing club in Ireland and was very pleased to find the same kind of cameraderie and spirit here - but with rather superior equipment.
All the people training here are cool and just generally on the same wavelength, although its a fairly diverse mix of people from all different walks of life.
A warning, this gym (and boxing in general) isn't for slackers, its for people who want to get into great shape and challenge themselves mentally and physically. If you want to get seriously fit and improve your co-ordination and concentration, this is the place to go.
I have to disagree with S.K.'s review. I have found the female instructors to be hard as nails and very good at pushing you, certainly they don't have anything to prove.
I'll also say that If anyone has ideas about women being somehow weaker than men they should take one of the girls' classes here, and get their arses kicked.

Awesome boxing gym. It's the best workout, especially since you can take 2 boxing classes back to back.
Love the no frills, dirty-ish, boxing atmosphere. Love seeing dedicated people train, even if others are just sweating for the heck of it. Miss the pit-bull dog that used to wander around. Gotta love the warped mirrors on the walls that distort you. Even if you don't have gloves and wraps, and just want to come check it out, the first class is free and they have (had) gear if you need to borrow the first time.

awesome boxing gym! great energy, people, vibe & atmosphere! its definitely a straight, no frills boxing gym in the city -- with 2 boxing rings for sparring & training, mirrors surrounding the gym for shadow boxing, posters of famous old boxers & fights, a number of heavy bags, weights, machines, a floor area for boxing classes & a brazilian jiu-jitsu matted area.
it meets a wide range of needs -- whether you're just learning the basics of boxing form & technique, continue to develop the basics of form & technique (always room to grow & develop the basics), looking for a serious kick a** workout both with boxing (including intense conditioning) & jiu-jitsu (never took any jiu-jitsu class but it sure looks like they literally kick your a** -- guys come out sweating & breathing hard but all are cool with each other at the end of the day), or training to compete as an amateur boxer.
they also have an awesome INCREDIBLY INTENSE & SERIOUS (check out the boxing bootcamp video -- you train early in the mornings, if you're late you jump in the bay) 4 - 6 weeks boxing bootcamp to train you for your 3 round fight @ the end, with ring announcer announcing your name, ring girls holding up round by round numbers & a lively crowd either rootin' you or booing you -- its quite an exciting scene.
its a safe environment where people are passionate for boxing!!! its inspiring to watch people train hard -- especially watching the women!!!!!

for months, or has it been over a year .. i have dreamt to workout in this gym ... finally, my boxing buddies and i decided to try it out tonight .. and wow ... it was everything we dreamt of .. and more!
the atmosphere is definitely high energy .. an overall fighter ambiance, oozing with adrenalin, serious, grungy, yet neat, air was very warm, like being in a sauna ... a wonderful boxing ring, dense and firm fighting bags, lots of space, lots of boxers ..
we took a boxing class that made us sweat like we were plowing acres and acres of land ... the emphasis was not only on form and stance, combinations and bag works, it was combined with conditioning, a lot of running ... stabilization of the central core, simply an overall holistic workout ...
the instructors are serious and do not tolerate slacking and chatting in between rounds ... "this is not a social club", one of the instructors would say ...

I took my first boxing class a little over a year ago... I didn't have a clue what any of the boxing lingo meant... left hook... upper cut... I didn't even know how to wrap my hands... I hardly know my left from my right... 10 minutes into my first class I was thinking to myself that I was just a girl that wasn't meant to be there (well actually I was calling myself all-sorts of names) I must have looked like a deer in headlights that was about to cry... Then to my amazement the instructor came over to me and really helped me out. He really made me feel at ease and really helped me understand. From that moment on it was all about making it to the end of class.
A class is an hour long which flies by... A hardcore work out to great tunes... With instructors that take the time to help you when you need assistance... They have no time for slacking and will call you out if they notice you doing so...
Next stop for me is boot camp... then I'll be booking a holiday to Brazil so I can parade down the beach with my extra hot and hard body... oh yeah...
