Great neighborhood bar in San Mateo. This sports bar in close to El Camino in downtown San Mateo.  They have typical bar food except for the relationship they have with Amicci pizza located a couple of store fronts away. We enjoy watching sports on their many TVs.  The energy is good in this bar. Besides the great pizza they also have pretty good burgers.  Drinks are reasonable and the bartender and wait staff are friendly.

2.7---Can't fully rate this place fairly based upon one food item ordered, as my friend claims that most things on the menu were far tastier than what we got.

My first time here...hadn't realized my day was going to culminate in a mildly rowdy sports bar, with beer and pub grub. It wasn't fully packed out, but loud enough to warrant a bit of shouting in order to have a conversation.

Layout of the sports bar---not bad. All corners and behind the bar sports various screens showing different games. We grabbed the screen to the left of the front door, and thank goodness we did: with the door open, allowing fresh air, I could brush off the bad smell of weed. (bleah!)

He a few Stellas, myself a Wyder pear cider... i expressly heard him ask for an extra cold glass...that he did not get (is it crazy to dunk one in ice?). I wish my bottle was colder...after some hemming/hawing, I chose a veg nachos to share..

Whatever came out was some coagulated scant cheese "not hot" mess that had definitely been sitting under the warmer, getting more stale than it already was. Chips were not crisp fresh, and the overall paltry servings of beans and cheese made us both think: yuck. Sour cream and guac scoops on the side were generous.. jalapenos with that yuck shade of green: check.

Ehhh for this neighborhood pub. Not too memorable and with basic menu. Table next to us ordered nachos as well, and theirs actually looked like nachos. Inconsistency noted!

Apparently yesterday was not one of their better days.

Way too crowded which apparently is so good for business that their beer prices were fluctuating.

    Uncouth.

Plus I was warned the food isn't so muckin fuch by a regular who said "the only thing redeeming might be the burger."  Hardly anyone was noshing, certainly not a a good sign.

We bounced before the 9ers game even began.  Kingfish bar was actually a better place without void of the view of some fat drunk chick at the bar slurring away at the TV anyway.

Probably better when it's not packed beyond the fire dept's liking.  Still, no reason to return.  There are plenty of other drinking holes(like 20 others) within a few blocks.

This is quite an expensive bar! They have no happy hour.  Don't get me wrong, the food is ok but for a bar it's pricey. You're definatly going to spend as much as going to a restaurant here. If you want to get a couple of drinks and a app, go somewhere else.

RUDE. RUDE. RUDE. And potentially racist.

My bro & I were walking around during the San Mateo fair and thought to have a drink. Looked like a cool place, it was half empty that day...but we were stopped by a male host / security guard before we could even enter. He said "sorry guys" you can't come in...we're having a private party??? During the San Mateo fair? With tons of foot traffic? Wow, that makes great business sense.

So we said fine and went across the street, watching others walk in w/o being stopped? HUH??? We ended up driving over to TGI Fridays instead and got awesome service. From the moment we walked into TGI's we were greeted by a smiling face asking "where would you like to sit?"...instead of "SORRY GUYS, YOU CAN'T COME IN"

3RD AVE SPORTS BAR & GRILL = GRADE F ( read their reviews. seems like A LOT of customers have had the SAME EXPERIENCE )

Went in there to watch the NFC championship game. Bar was very crowded, so I had to stand by the bar. Rude waitress(Michael Crabtree #15 jersey) yelled at me to get out of the way. Great service. Never coming back again.

So my friend texts me an address of 76 East 3rd St and I search it online and somehow think we are meeting at 3rd Ave Sports Bar.  Not sure if it was my mistake or if the search results were wrong, but my friend and I ended up waiting here for like an hour or so thinking that this was the right place.  Until my friend texts me again saying that we're supposed to meet at Glo across the street, haha!

Anyhow, they have plenty of plasma and or LCD TV's around to watch the latest sports action.  That night it was namely football, I'd have to admit that I saw some pretty incredible plays while babysitting that Sam Adams.  And boy we were even able to catch the highlights of the Stanford/USC game that we were listening to on the radio earlier.  Stanford beat USC 56 to 48 in three overtimes!  FTW!

The place just wasn't too busy that night and the bartender was pretty friendly.  I know this place might be geared for an older crowd, but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt at four stars.

Great bar with good bar food munchies. People are friendly and service is good.  Amicci restaurant is a few doors away from the 3rd Ave Sports Bar & Grill and the bar offers a condensed menu from the pizzeria.  This is a nice bonus for the bar patrons.

Prices are moderate so it fits within my budget.

Great friendly place to watch sports.

The BF and I were looking for a place to spend our Sunday Funday date where we could watch Game 1 of the Knicks-Celtics series and found this place on Yelp.  I'm a sucker for sports bars and one would think that I'd love this.  But for some reason, me and 3rd Ave Sports Bar & Grills just didn't click.  I'd come back again to give it another shot though.

    The pluses:
    - Pitcher of Blue Moon
    - Decent number of HD TVs
    - Not too crowded
    - Great service at the bar
    - Open space

    The minuses:
    - Price was a bit on the higher side for a sports bar
    - There was this really annoying group of girls that was there when we were there.  They were loud and obnoxious and didn't know what was going on with the game.  They also broke a few glasses and caused quite a distraction.  I think the only reason they didn't get kicked out was because one of them (the loudest of them all) worked there.  Maybe she's the reason why this place gave me a bad taste in my mouth.

The first time I came here was on one of those abnormally hot Sunday afternoons where the bay area hit the high 80-90s. I wanted to get away from the heat and enjoy a cold beer. All the other bars in the area didn't have AC or a fan and this was the only place where the bar was open enough where it didn't feel too stuffy. I ordered the lumpias and chili cheese dog  and both took forever to come out. I mean how hard is it to make a chili cheese dog?! It took so long I thought they forgot about our order.

I came here again recently but this time at night and this place really know how to blast their music. I felt like I had to scream to talk to the person next to me. If this place is trying to be a sports bar, why aren't you turning up the volume on the tv and turning down the top 40's crap? This probably won't be my bar of choice to watch any sports game.

    No hockey fans here....

We have been here a couple of times and thought the place was ok, but after our experience last night I don't think we will come back.

We stop there to grab some dinner and watch the Sharks game, which unfortunately was only showing on one screen. We waited for for the right table so we could watch the game since it was only on one screen and then we ordered some drinks. We got the drinks ok and proceeded to order some food, a grilled cheese sandwich and the grilled steak sandwich.

It took a while for the food to come out,  the grilled cheese was not so good, just bread and cheese, no butter on the outside of the bread.  Looked as if it was microwaved not grilled. The steak sandwich was ok.  Food in general has been just ok, nothing to brag about.

The dissapointing experience was that while we were eating and watching the game, the bartender who I believe is the owner (or manager) , decided to change the channel on our screen to football at the request of someone sitting at the bar, without considering who else might have been watching.  She switched the hockey to another screen which was not in our direct view and since the place was full we could not move, we could no longer watch the game we came here for.

We told the waitress about this and she just said they switched the channel because someone sitting at the bar requested it, perhaps a regular.   She did not even bother to tell the owner, as if they didn't care.  No real apology, and no attempt to fix it.

We opted not to order any more drinks and asked for the check, we left during the first period. Too bad, since we typically drop ~$200 on food & drinks when we watch a game, we will not be back!

By far the nastiest food I have ever had at a bar & grill. I ordered the pastrami sandwich. How hard is it to make a pastrami sandwich. What I got was some kind of salty meat on some toast. I kid you not. Dry salty meat on dry toast. Oh, and a pickle on the side. The fries were good. Unfortunately, that was all I ate. So I ordered a pizza from Amici's to go. That was good!

Next, the bartenders suck. They don't know how to bartend. I had to tell one of the gals how to make an AMF. What bartender doesn't know how to make an AMF? Ok, I'll admit, they're cute gals. That seems to be the criteria to get hired. So cute girl bartenders who don't know how to pour. And the drinks are poured short. So not only will your food taste like crap, you're stuck with weak shitty drinks. Yaye!

Never again, 3rd Ave. Never again. San Mateo needs a great sports bar and grill. Bring on the competition!!! Hmmm... that gives me an idea.

Don't confuse a good time with a good place.

I thought I had a great afternoon here. I came for Sunday football, and my team utterly laid waste to its opponent. We're talking annihilation, from the opening snap to the final whistle. I live for these moments of glory. Was it the 3rd Ave Sports Bar & Grill that caused us to mutilate the Chicago Bears on their home turf? I was euphoric enough at the time that I thought maybe so, maybe so.

But for what seems like a sports bar, something is amiss. I may be an architectural retard, but the space seems too open and too empty. The tables are spread out and the room is a rectangle. If you think about it, many sports bars have nooks and niches--small spaces where passion is concentrated. They resemble a man-cave, and that brings out the sports neanderthal in everyone. I was waiting for my inner animal to emerge, but this was just not the right habitat for it to blossom. The wall decorations seem mass-produced, the food is above average (chicken fingers), and the tap is average.

It seemed like 3rd Ave produced a great Sunday. In retrospect, I would have enjoyed our glorious victory just as much in a hospital bed or prison.

Despite the charming facade, once you enter the place seems somewhat disappointing.  I've been going there off and on for several years and the place doesn't seem to have changed...it doesn't have the charm you'd expect.

On the plus side they have a good selection of beers and the food is ok.  If you don't like the food they have you can always get food from Amici's next door.  Lately the sheperd pie has been to my go-to lunch.  Prices are ok to pricey but normal for that area.

While the wait staff are nice, they seem rather disjointed as far as service.  On a busy day it's pretty easy to 'lose' your waitress for long periods of time.

This is a great little place to chill and watch Sunday football.

Pros:  Good beer on tap, you can order from Amichi's next door

Cons: Food SUCKS, service is slow (if you're a female group, trick is go with dudes, the hotter they are the faster your service), the ambiance is weird, it's really bright inside and has anyone ever heard of a BIG SCREEN?  The TVs are so small and really high up, every SPORTS bar should have at least one big screen.

As you can clearly see the cons highly outweigh the pros, so unless you're desperate I recommend going to BJ's down the street you'll get better services and better beer to say the least.

My girlfriend and I stopped by on a summer Saturday night. Somewhat surprisingly it wasn't packed, but that's probably because no local teams were playing.

    The Good:
I really like the burger(s) here. For the first time, I ordered a turkey burger, and it was tasty. Usually turkey burgers are bland and dry, but it was quite juicy. Usually I have a regular bacon burger and that's always proven to be a good selection.
The waitress didn't write a single thing down and got the order perfect. That's talent, especially considering how I tend to customize my orders.
The fries are like youtube videos of kittens playing with puppies playing with babies, you just can't get enough of them. You will express some serious self control if you can keep yourself from filling your sloppy maw with them.

    The Bad:
    Nothing really on this visit.

    Overall:
When it's crowded or there are lots of large groups, the service tends to be quite slow. Don't expect the waitresses to stop by consistently, but they will stop if you flag them down.
With all their TV's, it's a great place to drink a beer and watch a game.

I drove to San Mateo to watch the Chargers game last night, ordered the Lumpia and the potato skins, and now I have the worst food poisioning of my entire life.  I literally cannot stand up. Another 3 hours of this and I have half a mind to call the health department.

    Service was below average.

OPEN LETTER TO OWNERS OF 3RD AVE SPORTS BAR

The experiment of letting your kids run the place has failed horribly.  I'm sure it sounded like a great idea at first.  You get to hang out by the pool in Hillsborough and your college drop-out offspring get employment somewhere other than the post office.  Sadly, what is one of the better locations in downtown San Mateo is rotting away due a staff that would rather text message their friends than talk with patrons.

A few folks from work stopped by for a quick beer and nachos.  After 5 minutes of getting ignored we finally just ordered directly from the bar.  The service went down hill from there.  I tipped 20% just cuz I was happy to get ouf of there.

Maybe you can save the place by hiring a decent staff.  Or maybe you just need some gigantic tax write-off and enjoy losing piles of money.  You'd probably make more money by leaving the tap open and hoping for donations.  Dunno...but I'll be spending my time and money elsewhere from now on.

In a word: PATHETIC. If I could rate rate this place ZERO stars, I wouldn't hesitate...

My girlfriend and I went here during last years NHL playoffs and couldn't have had a worse experience.

It's supposed to be a SPORTS Bar right? Well, the "waitresses" and "bartender" (who could've been eye-candy if they were better looking) obviously didn't get the memo.

I had to ask them to turn the Sharks game on and they resisted. When I asked if they could turn the Top 40 music down so that we could hear the game they outright refused. Our waitress told me that they "couldn't please everybody, he he." I looked around and more than half the people in there were wearing Sharks gear so I asked who she was trying to please playing Justin Timberlake? She smiled as if I was joking... I was not.

Oh... the service got worse, though she did ask how our food was... I told her that the food was horrible and she just kept on script, "glad you enjoyed it," she said. Plus, we waited a good 45 minutes in between finishing our "meal" and getting our check.

I wouldn't send my worst enemy here. But, if you don't like sports, or good food, or competent service than this is your place!!!

I am a regular at this place... go to every sharks game there...

originally popped in because i like to watch my games at a sports bar, and this is a little nicer atmosphere than the usually dirty sports bars i encounter.  menu is a little lacking, but i do like their 3rd ave burger... their mozzerella stix are awesome too...LOTS of fried/greasy bar food though so don't expect too many healthy/vegetarian options.

staff is awesome, super friendly! jordan is always there and is super nice, although the staff in general are all friendly and accommodating.  they always change a tv for me, wherever i sit, to the sharks game, which is the only reason i go there.

also, when the weather is nice, the windows in the front open up, creating an awesome laid back atmosphere...the crowd is totally diverse...lots of older regulars (not really the kind of place you go to pick up members of the opposite sex) but you tend to see families, couples, singles, due to the relaxed nature of the place.

tends to get a bit pricey... but i think its worth it for the decent selection of beers on tap and satisfying bar food.

overall...definitely love this place and would recommend it to anyone...chances are if a sharks game is on, you'll see me there!

I had drinks here last night during the last couple of innings of the all star game so I saw Putz pitch.  I just like saying that.  The bar was clean and well lit.  There were TV's everywhere and the bartenders were friendly, if a bit random, so it was a cool enough place to be on a Tuesday night.

I didn't eat any of the food, although I did smell fried shrimp, so I can't comment on that.  I'd go back.

i used to go to this place every week with some friends but i've been flaking due to conflicts in my schedule.. but this place is a great local sports bar and eatery. my friends always order something fried or a burger or a salad from Amici's next door. Sandy is the best bartender and she really cares about you too. Lisa comes by, makes sure everythings' okay, and with the boys, throws out a flirty comment here or there.

it gets crowded after corporate league games.. and sometimes there are families, so don't expect an adult atmosphere.

Probably not much of a lunch stop, though I can imagine this place packed during happy hour.

As soon as we walked in, it smelled like a freshly sterilized bathroom.

Menu was basic ... burgers, sandwiches, appetizers and a courtesy section for a few salads.  My friend couldn't reconcile a $7.00 grilled cheese sandwich, against a burger for roughly the same price.  I think she just needed justification for a burger.

I got the California chicken sandwich.  It was gigantic and messy to eat, but very yummy.  The soda machine was acting up, so I sent back my flat / watery diet coke.  The fries were greasy, hot and crunchy.  Next time I'm hungover at work, I'll come here for lunch ... but only if it doesn't smell like it did today.

We ordered a pitcher of Stella and a Margarita pizza as soon we sat down. The pizza came in about 10min or so, but the beer was no where in sight. The waitress assured us that it would be right out. We finished half of our pizza and still no beer. The waitress finally told us that they were changing the keg but the beer would be out shortly. 30min... still no beer. RIDICULOUS. My bf finally told her to just get us a pitcher of Pilsner instead.

Also, when we ordered our Stella she gave Holiday Sam Adam's glasses when they had a whole rack of Stella glasses behind the bar. Granted, I never actually got to drink my Stella, but still... that is ridiculous. Bottom line: Don't make me wait for my beer.

I've never been much of a sports bar and grill type of person, but when you hang out with guy friends, I guess you end up going to these types of places.

I actually liked the atmosphere, especially compared to all the other dirty and creepy sports bars I've been to.  It seemed to be even a little bit family friendly, considering there were actually a bunch of little kids at the table next to us.   There's a bunch of big TVs surrounding the place, so any seat you pick, yay!  You can watch something!

The food wasn't too bad, except I didn't really like my Sheperd's Pie consisting of hard not-very-good mashed potatos, beef, and corn.   I don't know why I ordered it, but I've never had it before and I really wanted to.   But still, I could tell that this wasn't exactly what it was supposed to taste like, and my friend, who's actually had it before, had to agree.   Other than that, alcohol was decently priced with an okay selection, so go drink and be merry.

For what it is, we liked it.  Grab a quick, casual bite for dinner and it tasted pretty good.

I had the halibut fish and chips which you don't usually see and they were good fish and chips, much better than cod.  Interesting you can order pizza's from Amici's next door if you don't want bar food.

We plan on going back.  It was a comfortable environment and you didn't feel like you had to be a regular.

The hubs and I are BIG fans of the corn dogs and fries here. In fact this is the draw of this place and is the primary basis of my rating. They are cooked to perfection...nice and crispy without being overdone. Sounds like such a small thing but I've had so many corn dogs and fries that have just not been cooked correctly, either soggy and undercooked or burnt to a crisp. The popcorn shrimp is also well seasoned and cocktail sauce that had a nice little twist to it.

The portabella mushroom burger was okay. It would have been better for me if the red peppers and onions had been grilled but overall it was lacking a little seasoning so I had to dip it in some ranch to give it some flavor.

The BIG downside for us is that they don't really show any love for the A's. Our first time there they put the game on because most of the other East Coast games were finished, but the second time we were competing with football too so even though we asked they didn't put on the game. We thought perhaps after the Boston game and some other Mid/East Coast games were finished they would accommodate our request, but sadly we were denied. We ended up keeping up with the game on they hubs' phone but were pretty disappointed they didn't show any love for our beloved A's. We know they are in last place, but they're still a Bay Area team.

Once again Andrea beats me to it.

    No redeeming value, whatsoever.

I didn't get my beer until I was done with my pizza?? WTF!! This is a fucking bar!

Nice little place to sit back and watch monday night football.  The bartender was super friendly,  fun to talk to, and was attentive to ensuring that we were never left waiting with an empty glass.

They have the standard pub food including burgers, sandwhiches, fries, etc,  They also have a pizza menu from the restaurant next door called amici's.  Happy hour prices were a little cheesy in that they offered 50 cents off of beers.  Saving 50 cents didn't really make me too happy.  lol

There are a couple of things that I didn't like about this bar.  First of all,  it is a little small.  there is a bar on one side of the room and about 15 tables scattered around the room.  The place was bright, and had a nice hardwood floor.  I think this killed the atmosphere of a "Sports Bar" and felt more like a deli.  The second thing I didn't like was the place was really loud.  With the hard wood floors,  sound bounces all over the place and becomes amplified.  At times it was hard to hear my friends talk because of all the noise that was around the room.

I haven't had the food yet, but the bartender waitresses are cute, attentive, and nice. It's a good place to ride/drink a hangover out and catch a game.

I had been wanting to check out this place for months and finally came here last week. The Sharks were playing that night so every one had their eyes on the screens and most people were clapping during those 7 goals! Gotta love the local fans :)

They offer a variety of beer on tap and bottled. The food was actually pretty good considering this is just just a sports bar. We really liked our burgers and fries. If you're not in the mood for burgers, sandwiches, or hot dogs. You can always place an order of Amici's pizza!

It's definitely a great place to have a drink, eat good food and catch a game. I can't wait until my Giants are back so that I can come here more often!

Came here to celebrate a friends birthday.  Even though we came here on a Saturday night, the place wasn't too packed.  It would probably would have been busier if there was a game going on, but that just made it easier to enjoy the place.

They have a good amount of beers on tap.   In addition, they had a solid selection of bottled beer and other drinks.  They had a decent selection of bar food.  We had the fried shrimp, which was good.  We also ordered some pizza which came from Amici's next door.  It's kind of cool that you can get real pizza because bar pizza usually is pretty bad.

Overall, this place seems like a cool place to hang out especially if there is a game going on.  Check it out if you get a chance.

Meh, 1 star for HD TVs all over the place and 1 star for having Anchor Steam Liberty Ale on tap. Other than that I would take Astaria across the street any day of the week over this place.

The young bartender had the attitude of rather being anyplace in the world except there. The chicken appetizer had a ratio of 4:1 potato's to chicken for $8, total rip.

Oh yeah, avoid the Boston red sox game days as a bunch of fair weather wannabe Boston fans show up and try to take the place over. F Boston.

Well I did not have HIGH hopes for this place because of my fellow Yelpers mixed reviews.  I went to 3rd Avenue solely to watch the All-Star game.  I had heard they have great televisions around the bar so that is what I craved.

They indeed had a pair of monitors (about 50") at the right end of the bar (They have 4 other monitors around the bar as well).  I pulled up a stool and had some Haywire Heffeweizen.   Their selection on tap was fair and I ordered the Shepherds Pie; something you don't see everyday.

The Sheps was okay, not the best I had even eaten but for a Bar and Grill it was decent.  One thing to note, which I thought was rather clever, you can order pizza from 3rd Ave and it comes fresh and hot from the Amici's next door.  Pretty cool.  While I did not have pizza this night; I know Amici's is pretty solid.

Overall, as a bar and grill 3rd Ave had its appeal.  This is defintely the place to go if you want to chat up you neighbor and share good beer and sports with them.
