Not only does the break room have my favorite ice cream bar (Strawberry Shortcake) but they have Hot Pockets!
Hot Pockets! In a vending machine! If that's not worth five stars, I don't know what is..

(Knock-Knock-Knock...) Please sir...we've come to see the Wizard.
Golly ...Toto and I have come an awful long way to see you. The Scarecrow here needs a brain, the Tin Man needs a heart, and the Lion needs some courage ..and well, as for me, Auntie Em is a complete bitch, so I just want my Yelp back.

This is the best datacenter in San Francisco, hands down. Their facilities are the best I've ever dealt with. They have a huge # of carriers. I'd want to be in this building during an earth quake.
Their core business, which is maintaining a solid carrier hotel, is done masterfully.
365Main was built out of a government facility which used to build tanks. http://Above.net fortified the building, installed $20M worth of flywheel generators, and did everything right.. Then declared bankruptcy.
When 365 started, they had a great story (purchased a $120M datacenter for $3M), and were extremely helpful. They wanted new business. They were dedicated, focused, and excited.
As time went on, however, everything slipped. Straight answers got harder to get. Responses got harder to come by. They seem to have forgotten who helped them get where they were, chasing after large customers, and ignoring the smaller guys.
Recently, I tried to execute a quote they'd given me, and was ignored until two weeks after it expired. I was then told that at my power density, new policies dictated I would have to pay 300% more, raising my costs by an unexpected $90k per year.
Pros:
- Below market pricing, if you signed up two years ago.
- SFMix is turning out to be a Good Thing [TM]
- Engineering staff (Electricians) are awesome
- Security staff always remembers my name
- Sales staff is very friendly, and bent over backwards to get us in, and accomodate special requests.
- Very convenient location, on every major fiber loop in the city
- The most intensely earthquake fortified building you will ever go in.
- Convenient parking
Cons:
- 100% occupancy... which means no expansion room.
- Quotes took months to be generated due to the company's small size.
- The NOC is outsourced, unorganized, and poorly managed.
- Seemingly high turnover in the NOC has produced a low level of competence
- New customers (or existing customers renewing contracts) are limited to 20 amps of current power cabinet due to a failure to keep up with cooling demands.
- Over a 2.5 year period, we have yet to receive a timely, or accurate bill.
- I'm unsure who exactly 365main is.The name on the checks has changed 4 or 5 times. We now pay their bank directly.
- Crash carts are all broken, or all in use.
I used to espouse the virtue of 365 to anybody who would listen. I referred in quite a number of new customers while they were growing. Now I decline to comment when I'm asked where I host my servers.

My favorite Data Center ... EVER!
.. I love the location ... conveniently located near my Crunch by Embarcadero gym ..
.. I love that there is free parking ... park by the meter, leave your Calif Drivers license by reception for your day badge, drive to the underground parking by Harrison St.
.. Security staff is uber_friendly .. after a day or two of installation, I am referred to by my first name ..
.. Shipping/Receiving Mgr is patient, accommodating and cool ..
... NOC folks are service oriented ... if my colo's crash cart is used by another geek, they willingly lend me a cart from a different colo room ..
... Electricians are friendly, albeit they consistently lay power down a day late, making me look bad from a deliverable standpoint ..
hmm, yeah there was an instance when a NOC kid was a bit clueless, he was the night folk though, must have been some learning curve issue..
and i love the view from the 3rd floor breakroom ... a Data Center facility in the heart of San Francisco ...
who says geek has to be boring and Silicon Valley .. 365 Main makes me feel that it's hip to be a geek!

On one hand: it's home to some of the most influential Web 2.0 sites.
On the other hand: its backup power supplies leave something to be desired.

My small startup switched to this data center after we ran out our power to our cage at Navisite. My Goodness, I politely exclaimed, how could a freaking data center in San Francisco possibly run out of power? They couldn't deliver more juice to our tiny group of servers, so we gave them the finger (the nice one) and moved to 365 Main.
WE RAN OUT OF POWER AGAIN! 365 cannot supply any more power to our cage in their data center either! This was almost unreal, particularly since they were well aware of the reason for us ejecting out of Navisite's center.
But then, I ran into a CNET article that reports that over 50% of all data centers in the U.S. will run out of extra power in the next two years. So two stars, since it seems to be a dismal trend among co-lo providers, and 365 seems to fall into that lame stereotype.
I don't know about the actual anemities on site, such as crash carts. I'm sure our system admins are so awesome that they've never needed to use one!

Good datacenter.
Pros:
Carrier-Neutral, several ISP's onsite to choose from.
Convenient Downtown Location
Friendly, personable security and Sales staff
Cons:
Painfully slow access-control.
Limited power (as with most datacenters)
Opaque billing for power. No cost breakdowns or rate information.
Overall, I'm happy with 365 Main as my colo provider, but 1 star less due to the time it takes to get into the cage. First you need to park outside at a metered spot. Once inside, check-in with security, leaving your drivers license. Security looks up your floor/cage number and gives you a badge. Get back in your car, drive around the building to secured parking. Go back upstairs to your cage. Call the NOC and ask them for access to your cage. Again - they need to look up your info, then send someone to the cage to give you access. All of this can take up to 20-30 minutes.
Come on guys, give your customers badges or keys!
*update* I now have a badge. Still need to call the NOC to come unlock my cage, but entry is substantially faster, now. Power is still constrained, however I bought up a bunch of extra floorspace to guarantee my share of the power/cooling.

Just found out from TIA that 365 Main is NOT a certified TIER 4 Data Center. They are self certified. They read the requirements but didnt pass the actual industry certification process.
Its like saying you received a PhD from a university when in actuality you went to night class and read the course pre-requisites and assumed you can learn on your own.
Online businesses in the SF Bay Area should look into other alternatives.

It was my favorite datacenter, until they hired some drunk that took my Yelp! down.
Good job guys.

We were one of the first companies to move into 365Main and we are still their customers... but there is one caveat, after the great engineering tour from rooftop and down in the parking garage where they tell you about the fantastic earthquake retrofit...
Power!
Yes, they have plenty of space, but we had to buy 3 times as much space in our cages to get the same amount of power we had before having to resign our contract... lame! On the flip side of things, they have their own power generators and we been told that they can withstand a 7.0 earthquake... we will see about that..
Hence, a lot of companies are moving out, but the customer service is great. Maria and Jesse in the front desk know me by name and are always friendly. The NOC team is most of the time competent to do some minor troubleshooting, but most of the time, we just walk down to this colocation and troubleshoot ourselves.
They now offer free starbucks coffee at the employee break room and free parking downstairs if you are working on your things. Other than that, its a great place and we haven't had any major outtage like we did at Savvis back in Santa Clara.
The notch of the star comes from the power. Otherwise, an ideal and perfect place to hold your data.

No doubt about it; 365 is a gorgeous facility, but you pay for it in more ways than one.
A - It's expensive to lease cage space and B - Don't expect a whole lot of power. Then again, there's not a whole lot anyone can do about it; it's the situation just about everywhere.
Technologically, it's a wonderful facility. A bountiful selection of carriers, veritable disaster protection, N+1 for pretty much everything and N+2 for a selection of features as well. Security is a little anal, but they're pretty friendly, so it about makes up for their draconian policies.
Bottom line: The Bay Area is a crappy place to put a datacenter, but all the cool nerds are here. So if you need the location, it's worth it, but if you can manage to setup shop elsewhere you'll thank yourself later.

They do a great tour at this data center. Amazing building, originally designed for tank construction. It has its own power generators and is on big rubber slabs so if all of San Francisco falls into the sea during a huge earthquake this place will be floating along happily supplying the world with various websites. They don't call it 365 for nuttin'. Well, that's the address, but, oh you know what I mean. Kevin Shanahan is the VP of Sales - direct line 415 546 6258.
