This review is for the 2012 Philly Cooks event hosted by Philadelphia Magazine.

I already can't wait till I can attend another Philadelphia magazine event. They really know how to do it. The food was fantastic and the space was perfect. I can't say it was a classy venue but it allowed for plenty of space for the food vendors, bars and mini tables to munch at. They even had a coffee and dessert area.

    Some highlights for me included:
Ela- super soft creamy italian cheese with kumquats, tiny mushrooms and a shortbread crumble. My favorite of the night!
Farmers Cabinet- Tuna tartare with a salty won-ton crisp on top.
Heirloom Fine American Cookery- black bass with pork belly and star anise. Not only was this delicious but it was a beautiful tiny plate of food!
Brauhaus- this shocked me because i'm not a lover of german food but there foie gras stuffed bratwurst was rich and delicious...especially paired with the homemade sauerkraut!

Overall, this event was fantastic. I went with a bunch of friends and had an absolutely blast. I even added some restaurant to my list to try in the future!

This review is for the Philly Cooks 2012 event held at the Armory last night.

This space is an excellent size for a Philly Mag event!  I hope this becomes the new standard.  While previous venues have been classier, they're all too cramped and tiny and the crowd becomes very difficult to manage, especially with a drinks in one hand and food in the other (or, you know, a second drink!).

But last night had plenty of room to maneuver, lots of little tables to stand at, and a really nice vibe to it.  Unfortunately they ran out of alcohol about 3/4 of the way through the night, that stepped on things a little bit, but the food was lots of fun and in some cases superb (notably Ela's cheese/mushroom dish and the black bass/pork belly/star anise dish from Heirloom Fine American Cookery).

Overall the Armory was a great venue for Philly Cooks, and I hope to be there again to enjoy it next year!

Last night we gathered a mini Yelp army to go to the MIA show, and none of us had ever been here before. So obviously we had no idea what to expect. Lemme break it down for you so you will:

    1) Gotta tinkle? Looking for some action? Then get ready...'cause you're going to the Port-A-Potty!

    2) No bar. Whaaa whaaa. So be forewarned and prep in advance if that is your thing.

    3) it is hot. Desert hot. So hot that I was sweating my boobs off. And FYI, that's pretty damn hot.

    4) The acoustics are ok, but basically it's a big room. You know, an armory. So don't expect World Cafe Live or anything.

    5) There is a pretty good chance you may get punched in the eye by some overzealous fan who will take out everybody in her path to get to the stage. My advice? Stay low and just get out of the way. And when she comes 'a swinging,  move back a little so when it lands you don't feel it as much. Or drink as much as you can before the show so at least you don't feel it until later.

Not that I know about that firsthand or anything..

Drexel had some college fest here several years back. I remember seeing the Eels, and Goldfinger might of played, but don't quote me on that last one. I have the tendency to blur shows together sometimes. Nirvana played here way back when before Kurt Cobain got severely depressed and well you know.

The main purpose for the Armory is for Drexel's ROTC to do their thing. I think its cool that they lend the space out. I kinda agree with Carrie, its probably not the best place for a show, but then again as far as West Philly goes, its not that bad.
