Never a cover charge, and really fun events every night of the week!
Admittedly I pretty much only go on Sundays for trivia, but I've also been to the Spelling Bee and had a load of fun. I've also caught a few bands here.
Sometimes it's extremely difficult to maneuver around all the chairs and tables when it is packed, but that's probably my only real complaint.
The staff is extremely friendly and the bartenders know about the beer they're slangin'.
During the summer there is a lot of space to hang outside.
All in all a great place. I'm not a huge fan of their food, though. That's the only downside to an otherwise great place. I know it's a bar, but I know plenty of bars with *great* food.
So go for the drinks and all the super fun events, but eat beforehand :) -

My friend just reviewed this so I'm jumping on the bandwagon only I'm keeping it nice and short.
I can't stand this place.
If you shower, dress well, make money at your profession, or like a friendly, non-judgmental atmosphere...go somewhere else. This place is filled with poser hippies who try way too hard to look like the dirty rags they're dressed in.
On the plus side, I don't ever have to go back...phewwwww!!! -
Review from Annie D.
I'd put the 331 Club in my "Northeast go-to" category because it has everything a good bar should have, plus a lot of bonuses.
Inside, you'll find a dark and comfortable booze cave for live music (ALWAYS free, decent local bands, lots of Americana, this makes me happy), trivia (they have quite a few games here, thanks to Trivia Mafia) and just plain chillin'. They also do some dance parties too, but these can be crowded 'cause it's a small bar.
Oh, and there is a broken jukebox in the women's bathroom. Say wha?!
The service ranges from decent to excellent, including one time a few years ago where we came for the drinking spelling bee and it was cancelled under crazy circumstances that had nothing to do with them. Instead of just saying sorry, they bought my group of 14 people a round of drinks. It was quite nice of them.
While the outdoor area is sometimes too smoker-friendly for my lungs, it can be nice to pull up a picnic table with friends and hang out there between sets.
Anyway, the gist is that if you like fun and don't care about the fancy, you will like the 331 Club. -

If you want to experience Nordeast for real, this HAS to be a stop. This place is always supporting local music which is something that not many places can say for themselves anymore. The bar itself, short, sweet and to the point. Their menu is great, but your typical bar food (which is not too shabby in NE MPLS). This is a great place to take a double date or even just check out some new music.
Honestly, the reason I really enjoy this place comes down to two reasons: Sunday nigh trivia and how well it supports local music. -
Review from Ben D.
This place just really isn't me... I mean, the drinks are semi-reasonable (small though), and the people seem really cool... But the music here is so far out of my normal range I really just couldn't handle it. We didn't end up staying here too long so I will review it like this.
Drinks - Little pricey for how small they were, not that big of a deal
Bathroom - Pleasant smelling and very clean
Service - Quite slow last night, I know it was busy but mehhh...
Music - Seriously awful, I can make those noises with my MacBook but you don't see me on stage.
All in all, I will probably go back when my friends band plays there, but I will be sure to take a look at the band playing's facebook before I go next time.
We ended up at Mayslacks which was in my opinion the better bar. -

Sadly, this is another one of those neighborhood joints that took me far too long to visit. However, I have been making up for that with weekly visits since last fall.
A couple lovely ladies of Yelp recruited me to play trivia with them on Sunday evenings at the 331 hosted by Trivia Mafia. Team Ginger Fight! was born. Since then I've been frequenting the bar weekly.
They have great grub and a fairly impressive beer list. The only real downside is the place is filled to the gills with hipster douche nozzles. I'm talking hipster epicenter of the city. Granola eating, unkempt beard rocking, mismatched clothes wearing hipsters. If you can get past that you're good.
They also have free music most nights of the week and a drinking spelling bee a couple times a month. Definitely a great bar. -

Yeah, I pretty much love the 331 Club. I have a lot of friends in the local music scene, and the 331 is the place they all play. Two of my friends have chosen to have their CD release shows here, and no wonder. It's the perfect setup.
The bar serves a huge variety of consumables, from cheap swill like Miller High Life to Surly to some really rare "boutique" beers. Like another reviewer said, they have an excellent bar menu. Definitely above average for a lot of bars in town. I had the tuna melt most recently, and it was absolutely scrummy.
As far as entertainment, I've never seen a bad show there. Jason the sound guy really knows what he's doing, and really works hard to give everyone (the band included) a good show. There's booth seating near the door (which is the back, from the stage point of view), and there are some tables along the long bench that runs up the south wall of the place.
Even when they don't have shows, it's a great place to hang out. The lighting is low and sets off a nice atmosphere. I just wish I lived closer so I could hang out more. -
Review from Amy R.
I've never seen so many tall PBR cans in my life and I used to live in Milwaukee. But, it was NE so I guess I shouldn't be all that surprised.
Dropped in for NYE and to see what was crack a lackin at the 90's party. Clad in our tackiest 90's gear; vests, overalls, swatch and a replica pager we barely made it through the door. By the time we got there it was at maximum capacity, but the doorman told us to hang on and were soon herded in to party like it was still 1999 with the other revelers.
The place was busting at the seams. Some dressed up, some didn't. At times it was a little hard to tell if people were actually dressed 90's or dressing 90's because it was "cool" and they always dressed the part.
I thought there would be an actual DJ spinning, but it was done via laptop. Wu- Tang and Hanson in the same set? Really?
It seems like a fairly fun place. No cover a big bonus. Bar area seems nice from what I could tell. No clue on the bathrooms or any other part since it was fully covered with wall to wall people.
331 seems to have a lot of potential and a lot of great ideas. I just wish the space would have been a tad less crowded. Trying to do the running man was virtually impossible since there was absolutely no room only enough for the sea of hispters to raise their tall PBR's
Nice blend of people. For as crowded as it was, almost everyone was really nice and respectful with the exception of the high heeled hair hopper who stepped on J's toe and acted like nothing happened.
Will defintely go back on another night. This place seems fairly decent. -

I moved to Minneapolis 2 years ago and 331 was one of the first places I went to. Here are the list of strikes against the place:
Strike 1: First time I went there a band was playing (no cover is nice, right?). Someone came around for donations to the band. My friend and I were together, so as she approached I said "hey, give them something for us." He did. She loiters around me afterwards saying "must be nice to listen to free music." Yes, yes it is. It was free BTW and I felt like me and my friend should donate inspite of the fact we didn't have to.
Strike 2: Another time I went there, I had come back from a work event and met a newly met neighborhood friend. I was in a button down shirt dress shirt and pants. I went outside to smoke and apparently a few folks didn't see me come out and heard "what's with the corporate guy in a dress shirt and pants being here?". I work in education and take what I do very seriously despite the crappy pay.
Strike 3: My downstairs neighbors and I decide to take their dog for a walk and stop in for a drink and 331's patio. Two of us go in hoping our friend doesn't have to show her ID to get 3 beers. The bartender (no problem at this point) asks for ID. My friend shows the other girl's ID and explains she's outside with the dog but can come in on her own if need be. He says "we don't allow dogs on the patio". NO PROBLEM. We can take the dog home, go somewhere else, that's fine. But the bartender proceeds to lecture us about why he thinks "dogs are like babies" etc, etc. Basically acting as if bringing a dog to a patio at 5pm on a thursday for a drink is like Michael Jackson dangling his baby from a balcony.
Essentially, this place pretends to be "cool", "laid-back", "hippy" , whatever you want to call it. But, it is full of very judgmental people and is very cliquey. I refuse to go back. Free music I suppose is cool, but at the 331 only if you're best friends with the lead guitarist or the 331 is one of the few places you go.
I generally like hipster bars, but this is where it goes wrong. Conformity pretending to be different and close-mindedness pretending to be liberal. -

The more I see of Northeast, the more I love it, and this place is no different.
Went there to see a friend's band perform. A place automatically gets one star for having live music. Though the acoustics are not that great. The place is pretty small actually, which is part of its charm, but the bands play like they would in a larger venue. That being said, once your ears get used to it (i.e., you lose SOME hearing), it's alright and you can enjoy the music and the screaming-in-ear conversation you may try to have.
The set-up is nice with some seating to the sides, but enough room in the middle to stand and listen to music, and maybe dare to dance, if applicable. The crowd seemed very chill and dive-bar-worthy. People spanned decades of age groups, and everyone got along just fine, because when music brings you together, who cares what age you are. I think there were even some biker dudes. I wouldn't want to mess with them.
There are so many little unique things about the place that add charm, like the ceiling tiles, the art on the side of the building, the sound guy who's getting drunk, and some of the other staff who show some dancing skills towards the end of the night. The little patio is pretty cool, and even with all the smokers, I enjoyed it.
After the bands finished playing, the disco ball dropped and some dance music was put on for people to get their groove on before leaving. I sure got my groove on.
The staff is super nice and friendly, and don't act all uppity and sober and snooty towards the patrons. They know what working at a dive bar is about, and they probably like their job!
I will definitely go back for more good music and a great chill time. I hear the place has some good happy hour deals, so I may try to check that out sometime. -

BLINGO, aka "Bling Bling Bingo" (my aunt actually called and asked what the difference is between BINGO and BLINGO--god love her) is on Tuesdays at 7. It's free to play and you can win prizes ranging from a shot of whiskey to a gift card to a hair salon. Although no one at my table won, it was incredibly fun and I couldn't help but smile when a throwback hip-hop song came on.
Is it just me, or does this bar host the best events in the Twin Cities? (I know Trivia Mafia's responsible for Scholasticus Intoxicus and the Drinkin' Spellin' Bee--but I think Blingo is the 331's creation)Listed in: Boozehounds, NE

Cheap dive bar with outdoor seating, free garage band-type music and cheap drinks in N.E. Mpls. Parking is usually good too. The bands here range from garage bands to karoke-like hipsters with garage bands but hey, it is cheap and there is parking!
Bathrooms sucks ladies. Lot of skanky poser hippies come here. They don't smell like pot, they just stink! -

Cheap drinks. Dog friendly (or so it seemed). Quite raised stage. Cool bartenders (helps that some friends in Portland knew the staff). Good location in NE Minneapolis.
Kinda dirty but totally palatable dive for good music and good times. Can't fault it too much for achieving exactly what it sets out to do.Listed in: Christmas Card From a Hooker…

I love this venue. No cover, the music is fantastic, and the space is very well appointed- I especially love the tin ceiling. I cannot WAIT to participate in the adult spelling bee. The only negative thing I have to say about it is that the crowd is a bit....insular. We came in around 10 and lucked out finding enough seating for three, and the people around us moved as far away from us as possible and didn't say a word. My significant other is the type to talk to anyone and everyone, and he couldn't get a conversation going with a single person in the place.
Other than that, the music was fantastic, so as long as you BYOF (bring your own friends), 331 is a pretty great hangout spot. -

One of my favorite bars in Minneapolis.
Bartenders are laidback down to earth people. They do their job well and just seem really relaxed even while keeping up with the busy demands. Zen powers I imagine.
Patrons are cool, liberal, easygoing people. Starting up conversations is easy and it's easy to make new friends here. -

UPDATE!! They got these rocking blue curtains for pretty much all of the walls. I don't know why I love them. But I LOVE them. They make the 331 even better. Go! but not all at once, now.
This is my favorite bar. I started coming here when I first moved to the Cities, trucking up from South Minneapolis to see folks like Darren Jackson and Charlie Parr, because there's never any cover. Which I love.
They have Bell's Two Hearted (it's gone now! :( 10/25/07 - but they have Pilsner Urquell now and Finnegan's), Surly Bender, and Grain Belt on tap. They also have wireless internet. Last month I sat on their University Ave patio and coughed on truck exhaust while I checked my email. Love it!
Trivia on Sunday's with Chuck and Sean is often hysterical. They never start on time (which would by 9pm), but get there early if you want a table. You might plan on making friends or at least sharing your table because this is a pretty tiny place, and it fills up for trivia.
Check out the burlesque shows. We don't do burlesque in the Minneap so much, and you've got to hand it to the 331 to support it.
Caveats: no windows, which is only weird in the daytime; unique smell, which you'll grow fond of; hard to move sometimes - what can you do.
Look for the talented Mr. Rob Skoro behind the bar (he'll be the one with a feather in his hat) - he's a local singer-songwriter with a national audience. And a heckuva barman.
I dig also Raleigh's Texas Tacos on Tuesdays. $2.50 margaritas, hard to beat.
And if you remember anything, be it this: Half-price bottles of (very decent) wine until 9 o'clock (that's late, folks) from Sunday to Thursday. -

This place lived up to what I was expecting as a dive-y live music venue w/ bar. The patrons are more diverse than I would have thought (a great thing to see, btw) and when there wasn't music playing there was some fun trivia going on. This was just one of the handful of places I've visited in the Nordeast and it didn't take long for me to get won over. I'm just hoping I land an apartment here and soon since I just moved here on a well-researched whim days ago. I think it's that whole up-and-coming thing (doesn't seem like there's too much more to fix up from what I saw) along with the healthy mix of artsy, blue-collar, and immigrant residents. As a newcomer I couldn't have asked for a better welcome than what I got here.

I went in for happy hour after work. It goes until 7 p.m. They have $2 polish dogs that are pretty good. They also have $1 off drinks. I sat out on the patio and enjoyed a few beers.
By trade, I wear a suit and tie to work and usually feel out of place at dive bars when I'm dressed up, but there were plenty of friendly people here. A few people started up conversations with me. The regulars were welcoming and friendly. -

This place is always fighting for space, and always crowded. But it is fun as hell, and the regulars are crazy!
The patio sucks (mostly due to the size) but if your on the Northeast side, there is no reason why you wouldn't want to come here..

Review from Nicole J.
The streets were more quiet than usual the Saturday night I visited 331 for the first time. It was the night after the big November snow storm. I was back home for a quick visit and wanted to bar hop in Nordeast - slushy road or not.
After dinner and a drink at Psycho Suzies, my friend Scott and I jaunted down to 331. First thing I noticed when I walked in was how dark it was. Second thing was a sign that said "Cash Only".
"Sorry, all our machines are down," said the female bartender. "We're out of electricity from the storm.
And then I realized, the whole place was illuminated by candles. Wow!
"We've been told it might be two days before we get electricity back, but we're not shutting down," the bartender continued.
I love that Midwest prairie spirit!
Scott didn't have any cash, but by God, we'd stay and have a drink. I ordered a Grain Belt Premium just for old time's sake.
I'm told 331 has great food and good live entertainment. No way to know on that night, but all I know is that the Grain Belt was cold and the seats were warm.
I'd like to check it out again when they have electricity. -

Was there on new years eve. They only have about 6 to 8 booths, and not a single waitress waiting on the tables on a new years eve. Not one. As if they just disregarded the notion of serving at the tables. It was get it yourself. And menu food item I had was not tasty. Dry and didn't have ingredients listed as supposed to be on it for some reason. Other than that, not that familiar with the bar. But its good if you like to stand I guess.

Was at the 331 Club yesterday and they had a drink menu which was politically themed, funny and strong. Great atmosphere and they always have weird yet good music. The Dj was topless with her nipples painted, thats a first for me. Friendly staff and everyone looks gorgeous because its soo dark in there. Perfect for a Tuesday night.
I am adding to my review of the 331 Club to warn against trying the bean tacos on taco night. Some of the worst bar food I have ever had. The pita and hummus was OK but it would be better if they heated the pita and not serve it cold. Happy hour is one of the best in NE. $2.50 for any beer 3-6 pm, Monday-Firday. -

I dig it.
This bar has a great beer selection, moderate prices.
Awesome bar food menu (tots? Yes please).
I think I need to mention that again....
AWESOME bar menu.
I've had their 'Cubana' sandwhich and it is very tasty.
Food prices are a little spendy...but DUIs are spendier so splurge away!!
The main perk of this place is the events they hold.
No cover!
You can do the Trivia night, bingo, or check out a friggin' sweet show.
No cover!!!!
It gets a little packed in here during the cool events, so get there early.
No cover!!!!!!!!
I love the themed trivia nights, the John Waters night was awesome.
Oh yeah, no cover!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I hung out around here during Art Crawl over the summer time.
The back parking lot was filled with vendors, music
and an outdoor beer vendor truck bar thingy.
Pretty sweet set up- me likey.
Did I say no cover?
Bwahahahahaha!

Fellow yelpers have done a great job raving about this place, but I can't help but add my two cents.
Happy Hour. My favorite hour at 331. They have $2 tap beers and $1.50 brats every afternoon. $1.50 brats?? Yes, $1.50 very delicious Sentyrz-made spicy or regular variety brats with a complimentary mustard bar.
I end up having the best conversations at this place in the afternoon. Everyone is real chatty and has an interesting story of where they work, where they came from, or where they're going. It's always a pleasure having this bar in my neighborhood. -

I went to 331 Club on Tuesday night with some friends for BLINGO. Blingo is best described as sassy bingo--played to rap music, a funny hostess, odd bingo shapes (hair dryer, martini glass, etc), and awesome prizes (shots, free tacos, t shirts, salon gift certificates, and wiping your bar tab clean).
Blingo runs from 7-9pm on Tuesdays. I suggest getting there a little early to get a table.
They serve food...but I'd recommend eating elsewhere before you go (Erte across the street is a much better alternative). Menu is small and with cheap food, but even for $3-$5 the taco, chips and salsa were pretty blah. Bottles of wine are half off Sunday-Thursday. Tuesday is taco night--$3 for one and $5 for two--go with the chicken over the bean if you decide to ignore my advice about eating elsewhere.
331 Club also has a drunken Spelling Bee every other Saturday night, and trivia on Sundays.
There is a small parking lot behind the building and ample street parking within a block or two. -

BLINGO!! I love the 331 for its live music, cheap drinks, tacos and the jukebox in the ladies room...but now I also love it for its BLINGO on Tuesday nights. This was a little different than my other bingo experiences thus far (this is the Summer of Bingo) because it was very casual and much slower paced. They really make you think, too! It's not just your Connect Four variety bingo, you actually have to make shapes on your board to win (like a bottle of Jameson).
As is apparently tradition now, I won the first game that I played (happened last time too) and the prize was mystery shots. I identified one as orange rum (my friend still insists it was vodka, but I have a very specific reaction to Bacardi O that dates back to high school...) and the other was a clear tequila. She was driving, so all four were my responsibility, being that I live within stumbling distance (Caution!!). I tried to pawn some of them off on strangers - and the blingo host - to no avail. So I had two, which was half of my booty. That was enough. Not the greatest prize, but pretty amusing and appropriate to be awarded shitty alcohol for doing nothing other than blotting at a paper and barely paying attention.
This was a really fun venue for the game, and I would come back again to play. Half the fun is definitely the drinking (am I slow to catch on here?) Call me greedy, I still like the games where money is the prize best. Regardless, nothing beats the feeling of pride when the blingo/bingo host notices that you brought your own daubers, no matter where you are - it's totally the stamp of a serious bingoer. Which is what I aspire to be.Listed in: My Neighborhood, The Places I Go Out, Hot Daubbin'

I was here for a friend's farewell party last month and the place did not impress me much. The beer was cheap but then again, most beer in northeast is pretty cheap. The patio seating was sparse and our table was rickety and dirty. When trying to get back in, there was a group of aging hippies whose sole enjoyment came from clogging up the entrance and forcing young girls to slide much too close to them on their way in.
Inside there was a band playing your run-of-the-mill neo-bluegrass knock-off. I wouldn't have minded the girl's whiny voice so much if the sound wasn't SO LOUD. Did they honestly think it was either (a) rock and roll or (b) a band that was worth hearing from a block away? It was neither.
We ended up in the back corner shouting at each other. I was surprised by some delicious hummus we ordered for around $5 (that amusingly arrived at the table in a plastic margarita glass) but other than that, the whole place fell flat.
I never had that no showering, PBR-lovin' phase in my life. If you are in the midst of yours, you probably love the 331.Listed in: Nordeast

I went here recently for trivia night, and loved how felt like the neighborhood hang-out, particularly since it's in my new neighborhood :) Even as a non-regular, I felt welcome. They had good stuff on tap, and I was impressed the the liquor selection, too, although I just stuck with beer.
Trivia night was fun; the only drawback, which is huge, was that the music was WAAAY too loud. I understand bars for some reason feel compelled to play music so loud that you can't talk to people, but this was so loud you couldn't think. All the regulars were sitting in the back in the booths -- perhaps putting some distance between you and the speakers the only way to survive more than one round of trivia. I'm looking forward to going back sometime, but I'll bring ear plugs. -

We came here for drinks after dining at the new neighborhood hotspot, Anchor, which is about a block away. I had never been to the 331, but envisioned it as a crowded, noisy dive bar. I was half right. It's definitely a dive bar, but it was relatively slow and relaxed. It didn't get noisy until the live band started around 11 pm - which still wasn't annoyingly loud. We could still have a conversation across the table in our corner booth.
We had waitress service, contrary to the sign on the table that said "bar service only." She was prompt and checked in on us a reasonable amount of times - letting us leisurely sip through the beers we ordered while we enjoyed a game of Scrabble (yes, we're those people). I won, which is generally expected, and we turned in early. I liked this place and I will be back! -

This review is mainly for the drinking spelling bee. I went to this event for the first time yesterday and it was really fun. For $6 you get your first beer and a chance to participate in the bee. The first round is generally pretty easy and most people got two beers so there isn't much of a financial gamble with this one. The bee was fun to watch but frustrating for some participants. The judges were not very good enunciators and often had to pronounce a word a couple different ways because they weren't sure of proper pronunciation. A couple people left the bee early due to this frustration and confusion. Overall, however, it's great fun to be had. Other than that, the staff is nice and friendly, drinks are reasonably priced and there are a few food options. It appears that people do not come here for the food though and what I tasted was nothing special.

I didn't even realize little clubs like this existed in Minneapolis (OK, I am new to town and by the way, very excited that Yelp has finally made its way here), so I found 331 Club to be a pleasant surprise. It's kind of a dive bar-cum-hipster hangout, and the bar selection is fantastic. I think the special drink the other night was some old-man drink, like an old fashioned, and I had a Lillet. Let me tell you: Hardly anyone in the entire Twin Cities aside from French restaurants stocks it, but 331 does.
The live music is obviously the main point of 331, so it would be great if they would invest in some better speakers. However, I didn't feel blown out of the room by the sound, and that's saying something in this small of a room. It's also nice that the club features a variety of music, and even though it doesn't feel like a divey smelly punk club (it's clean and doesn't smell like puke, for example), it doesn't feel like you're in a hotel lounge either.
Anyway, hip, cool, low-key neighborhood and hip, cool, low-key bar. It makes me feel a little better about being in Minneapolis, frankly. -

Free live shows...good beer...nice atmosphere...all tucked into a cute yellow brick building.
What else could you really ask for?
In my opinion, this is one of NE Mpls's finest establishments.
I have played and caught many shows at the 331...and yes, it is a tad crowded and the line for loo is typically long and obnoxious...but who cares...grab another Surly from the bartender and go with the flow... -

Whether you like the 331 has a lot to do with what you want out of a bar. If you want lots of seating for your friends and to hold a conversation, this probably isn't the best place. If you like a small local happy hour or a place to stumble into to hear free local music, this is your place.
The drinks are strong and reasonably priced. There is a nice, long picnic bench outside for the smokers or outside seating in the summer. The people that go here are mostly locals and are pretty friendly folk. The music is usually pretty eclectic so check out the calendar in advance. The tacos are pretty darn good to. -

Saw the Sunny Era there this past weekend. It's a great little venue for just such a band. Intimate, yet plenty of space for the audience. It was great to be able to sit at this kind of show.
Strong drinks, reasonably priced. Good beer selection, and large liquor selection. Great service and attention at the bar.
All in all, one of my new favorite NE hangouts. :) -

What a dump. We walked in and wondered if it was an industrial dumpster at a cheese or rendering plant. The place was littered with beer cans and overturned chairs like a biker fight just ended (the menu at the booth we sat in was stained with a red liquid) at 8:30 on a Thursday? It reeks like no concerted cleaning has been undertaken in months, a bit of homeless alcoholic chain smoker funk going on... and you think I would eat food here? I understand the owners closed down the 501 and want to open a new bar in St Paul. Here is some free advice: take a look with the lights on and maybe try a little harder. There is NO WAY this place would pass a health department inspection. NO WAY. Save your time and give the 331 a wide berth. Why test your vaccinations if you don't have to?

Fun activity filled low-key bar in the Northeast. Drinks and apps on the cheap side, but food is nothing to rave about.
