I found a couple pieces I absolutely loved: a worn brown leather jacket and what seemed like an Air Force flyer's jacket-- I only picked up the leather, but might go back for the flyer's jacket. If you're looking for more traditional stuff, this isn't really the place for that. Things lean more towards the casual and funky side, e.g. burnt orange red pants and what I'm pretty sure is an old bowling league shirt. The leather jacket was definitely one of the more conservative pieces I looked at. That said, it's hard to fully judge the selection; as with any thrift store, the stock is really fluid and apparently the place was ransacked the previous week after getting written up in SF Weekly. I imagine it's fantastic for locals, since Stephanie sounds like she's constantly on the prowl for new pieces. If I lived in SF I'd probably drop by at least a couple times a month, if not more.

I love the space. It's very well-lit and inviting. There's some interesting art work put up all around the store (for sale as well), as some interesting decor choices like a wall of lockers set up near the entrance (whether or not these have a practical purpose, I have no idea). Apparently they hold a few events here, and I'd definitely like to swing back by to check that out.

Finally, Stephanie is great. Very friendly and open without being pushy. Another customer came in as I was leaving and she greeted him by name, so it seems she has her share of regulars and makes a point of engaging her customers. She also apparently offers up services as a style consultant to help pick out a ward robe, and already has a few clients rotating in and out for that.

All in all, great spot. Will definitely drop in on occasional and would definitely be a regular if I lived in the City.

I totally just dropped by here the other day when I was in the neighborhood based just on the visual display in the window, and believe me, it takes quite a bit to draw me into a vintage clothing store. I didn't dig around too much since I promised myself that I would clean out my closets before getting anything new, but the owner definitely has a good eye for the truly eclectic and funky, yet still wearable, and get this - at thrift store prices! What I liked most is that she definitely had lots of items in colorful, unique prints. Quite a few were definitely ethnic and authentic, and if you're looking for an ikat print to spice up your wardrobe, she's got it. She's also got clothes for dudes if you're looking for that graphic tee that nobody else has.

I ended up talking to Stephanie for quite a while, and I hope to come here on one of her nights that she's hosting an event. It sounds like she has plans to have a sewing studio and potentially carry upcycled or deconstructed pieces. She was super friendly, and I'm glad to support her business when I need some new pieces.

After all that, I ended up checking in on foursquare and used the Scoutmob deal to buy a formal Filipina style jacket that I think I could pull off wearing with jeans and had caught my eye as soon as I walked in the door. If you're a Bernal resident, she also participates in the Bernal bucks program which I wish I had in my hood.

This store is owned and run by my friend Stephanie. Initially I checked out the store to support her new venture. (Go Mercy Girl!) But was able to find items that I truly loved. Everything reasonable priced and the atmosphere is completely chill. You don't feel pressure to look at everything or to even buy anything you don't like. If you have questions about a certain style and how to wear it, Stephanie is there to support and advise.

I was able to find a tweety bird yellow blouse that I didn't think I could pull off but after some back and forth chit chat I took the plunge and haven't regretted that purchase. Also, found was a table cloth with HAND CROSS STITCHED pattern, a SF bear potholder and two vintage style dresses all extremely affordable. I was able to find some great items for my house, not just clothing, a cute cellphone over the shoulder strap bag, scarfs galore, and a wide range of colors to keep any bright eyed customer happy.

31 Rax always has a deals in store on top of the great prices, also it's a great hang out spot with it's comfy coffee lounge sofas and mellow beats playing over the stereo. Also provided a MILITARY DISCOUNT and if you check in on Yelp for first timers a 10% discount.

Also see if she'll host another OPEN MIC night, from what I heard it was hella fun. People and artists from all walks of life were able to showcase raw talent from the bay area. It's a great find in the city that steals your heart away... when I return to the bay for a visit I'm dropping by again with my boys

Cute stuff at very reasonable prices.  I got an awesome 70's dress with a Pink FLoydesque prism design on it.  I also tried on a killer 60's Mad Men sexretary outfit but alas had neither the cone bra nor girdled waist to fit into it.  The girl(Stephanie?) who owns the place is friendly and charming.

Lots of cute/funky stuff, clean place, well organized, great prices and very inviting (a couch is right in the middle!).  I'm used to European thift stores/street markets which has more my style (classic, luxe, subtle details) so my main critiques are to have more merchandise since it's such a huge space & more diversity in the styles.  Also, i suggest to have clearer price tags.

The Mission- an infamous shady neighborhood but at least it's gentrifying.  Lots of parking in front so not too bad when you can hop in and hop out with your loads of goodies.

The owner is SO friendly & such a sweetheart she makes up for the crackhead-ridden streets!

Right now there's a deal going on on Yelp for this thrift store. $20 worth for $10 dollars. This extension of Steph's Closet is everything the storeowner promised when she was a little girl and more.
A tiny secret between the locals of the Bay Area, the store is home to an amenity of apparels for men & women for a fraction of the cost. The owner, Steph, you will adore. She will approach you lightheartedly and make you feel comfortable while you shop around. No pressure here. Just warm smiles.
It will be hard to walk out emptyhanded. The assortment comes from a variety of places, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and the like. Some products are consignment by local artists and merchandisers that gives San Francisco the unique flare.
Come join the fun and I promise you'll be a repeat customer when Steph and friends are done with you.

    Fabulous Find Finally:
Sweetie Darlings, when did you last feel like a million bucks?  That long, huh?  One certainly wants to wear clothes that make one look great and feel like a million bucks, but who has that kind of lettuce?  I know I do not.

Mind you, I am no fashion plate, and I do not follow trends.  I never have, and I never will.  However, that does not mean I am completely clueless about style and presentation.  Packaging may not mean everything, but who wants to look like a sack of potatoes?  I know I do not.

So how is a girl to get her fabulous on?  I do not know about you, but I found a way.

In Bernal Heights, I unearthed a marvelous garden of unique clothes better known as 31 Rax.  31 Rax is an orchard brimming with vintage clothing for ladies and gents ripe for the picking.  I could hardly believe my eyes as I browsed the racks.

As my fingers ploughed deeper and deeper, I felt like I was in a time machine.  Those garments flashing before my eyes were like a feast of fashion.  Of course, some of those courses shock the system.  You may find them all scrumptious though.  Nevertheless, I did find some absolutely fabulicious.  Among those tender morsels, I excavated a jacket that piqued my interest.  The jacket had a Joan Crawford mystic to it.  I knew I had to at least try it on, in honor of Joan, of course.  I tried it on, and it fit; it fit ridiculously well!

Since releasing my inner athlete (see my review of Fitness Matrix SF), I have successfully transformed my body from unhealthy to healthy.  The clothes that supported my unhealthy body are no longer in my wardrobe.  Yet, how is a girl to be fabulous with an empty closet?  I had to replenish my wardrobe.  Unfortunately, the harvest has not been bountiful.  Clothes off the rack do not always fit me, leaving me heavy hearted and empty handed.  So you can imagine my delight when I fit the Joan Crawford-esque jacket; Joan would have been proud.  Typically, upper body garments (jackets/sweaters/shirts) that fit me horizontally (shoulders/chest/waist) do not fit me vertically (sleeves).  This Joan Crawford-esque jacket gave me a 360 degree fit!!  Jackpot!!!  Yet, I did not pay a jackpot to give my Joan jacket a new home.

Sweetie Darlings, for those that like numbers, the bottom line is this: You must drop by 31 Rax and harvest your own frugal fierce fabuliciousness.

31 RAX is such an awesome thrift store. The owner, Steph hand picks all of the clothes and every time I go in I find an article of clothing or fabric that catches my eye. The interior of the store is surprisingly stunning for a shop in the Mission. The arrangement of the furniture and racks of clothing within the store exudes a modern feel, while the decor and art strewn across the walls are a touch of pure ornamentation. The circle decals in the front of the store give a nice pop touch! The display window is exceptionally well composed and the trunk containing miscellaneous fabrics and scarves usually has something you'll want in your own closet. I love the skirts and the patterns Steph selects. It's an awesome store with lots of personality that will accommodate any person's closet.

I've been wanting to find a store that is unique and would carry different type of vintage clothing & accessories that you would not normally find in the bay area. I finally found a great store that not only has UNIQUE & AFFORDABLE clothes & accessories, but the establishment also very inviting. Once I walked in, I was prompted greeted and felt freely to shop around. I loved the selection of different styles and the prices were inexpensive. The accessories are all different and goes great with the clothes. You can basically purchase your whole outfit here and spend less than you would expect.

Not only do they sell clothes & accessories, but they also host different events from: speed dating, happy hour rendezvous, bingo nights, etc. I have been to some of the events and it feels very relaxed and super fun! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND checking out the store =)

31 RAX is a newly established vintage store in the Mission/Bernal Heights area. The store is comprised of an abundant merchandise assortment for both men and women. In addition, accessories such as bags, hats, scarves, belts, and earrings are available - 31 RAX highlights local independent designers such as GARAGE GLAMOROUS, ANGELIQUE B., & INTWINED are also sold within the store.

I feel that 31 RAX differentiates themselves from all other vintage stores within the area because of its SUPERB CUSTOMER SERVICE and AMAZING PRODUCT ASSORTMENT. You definitely walk in feeling very welcomed. What I like most about the store in the sense that it is unlike many vintage stores in the surrounding areas is that 31 RAX makes it EASY for the customer to browse through the merchandise. Customers are able to satisfy their vintage needs by efficiently looking through the assortment as it is set up in an uncluttered-like fashion. Another plus - THE STORE IS CLEAN!

Word on the street - 31 RAX will also be holding a variety of events. Keep on the look out!

I give the store 5 stars! YOU SHOULD DEFINITELY MAKE A TRIP OUT THERE SOON - it's WORTH IT! & parking is NOT BAD at all!

I've never been brave enough to try the vintage thing, although I have come a long way since my Jobs-ian high school wardrobe of black shirts and blue jeans (Steve pulled it off way better than me).  But after seeing the grand opening announcement for 31 Rax on the BernalWood blog, I thought there was no harm in browsing.

When I walked in, Stephanie, the owner, greeted me warmly and introduced herself.  But not in a "you're more likely to buy something now!", kinda way.  Her friendliness was more the "loves owning a small business" style.

Prices were WAY below what I expected.  I tried on a cute (but too big) wool jacket that was $14, and a dress around the same price.

Stephanie says she rotates her stock every other week (is that bi-monthly, or semi-monthly?  I can never remember).  I will be stopping in here FREQUENTLY as I expand my fashion horizons to include decades past.

31 Rax is such an adorably decorated, unique, and affordable vintage store. Great selection of clothing&accessories for both men and women. I came into the store and immediately found what I was looking for! The owner Stephanie was very sweet and welcoming. Not only is this a clothing store but it also moonlights as a venue for various events such as Art Shows, Happy Hour, and Open Mic Nights. Such an awesome find in the mission/bernal heights area, I highly recommend 31 Rax.

If there's one type of store that I love it's vintage stores and trust me I've been to every single vintage/thrift store up and down both Mission and Valencia, but this new place really takes the cake. Not only is the selection of clothes awesome they are most importantly really affordable (nothing over about $25). Two things that are really important for me is customer service and presentation and  31Rax gets an A+ in both departments. The owner, Steph is a real sweetheart  and really makes your shopping experience fun and enjoyable. On top of that the store is set up really nicely so it's not cluttered and overwhelming which can totally be appreciated if you're used to sifting through overly filled racks like I am. Don't sleep on this spot it's definitely going to be SF's new favorite vintage clothing store once the word gets out.

I have been to 31 Rax a couple of times and there customer service is great. Stephanie is great and very helpful in finding what I need. I threw an end of the season volleyball party at her store. It really worked out great. She was very helpful and entertained my players and showed them a great time. I would recomment 31 Rax to anyone that would like to shop as well as throwing an event.

31 Rax is a super new and cute store with many vintage clothing and accessories that you usually wouldn't find in other thrift stores around the bay. I love the assortment of styles and eye-catching colors with mesmerizing designs! Not only are the clothing and accessories fabulous, but their merchandise is super affordable and stylish! The people here are also very welcoming and inviting.  They definitely know the definition of good service. I was readily greeted and felt free to shop. Great fashion and great people- what more can I ask for? :)
