Review from Bret C.
Now THIS is an ice cream shop! It's clean, comfortable and the perfect size. The staff is friendly and patient when you want to try any or all of the flavors. Good location in Brighton Center.
They have both hard ice cream and soft serve. I tried several flavors but ultimately landed on the coffee cookies and cream. Made a sundae out of it. It's a nice treat to see a reasonably priced sundae unlike many others in this area.
Dogs love 3 Scoops, by the way. Free dog treats. It was like a dog convention outside.
And now they are accepting credit/debit cards. Talk about a perfect ice cream shop! I'll be back here again soon (okay - probably today) and will bring more friends to make into believers. -

I returned to 3 Scoops last week and was disappointed with the experience. While they now take credit/debit cards, which is fantastic, everything else seems to have gone downhill.
There was one couple ahead of us in line and one of them ordered a flavor that was frozen so solid the woman at the counter finally said she couldn't scoop it and asked if they could order something else. I found this ridiculous on two levels: first, that their freezer is clearly not calibrated correctly, and second, that this became the customer's problem.
I ordered a small sundae, which was comically small. It truly looked like a peewee cup. At $5 this was also absurd, particularly with so many other excellent ice cream options in the Boston area that offer more for the money (Soc's and JP Licks also offer premium ice cream but they do so in reasonable portions at similar prices).
I want to love 3 Scoops again; it's my neighborhood ice cream place and I know how great it once was...1 Previous Review: Show all »

I've been to 3 Scoops several times over the years. I'm really glad they take credit cards now!
3 Scoops is a worthwhile stop, though a bit pricey for Brighton Center. Their ice cream is made by Coop's MicroCreamery (same dude who used to make stuff for Herrell's). If I wanted ice cream in Brighton Center and had to choose, I'd opt for Abbott's Frozen Custard down the street, though I still really do like 3 Scoops. -

Adding in an update because they were super friendly and accommodating when I asked about sugar-free and low-sugar flavors. The guy was very patient about my questions and even helped brainstorm a few flavors with me. That's going above and beyond, in my opinion.

Visited last night for the first time and found my holy grail of ice cream, or "ice cream" I guess since they had a lactose-intolerant's dream dessert - coconut ice cream made with soy and coconut milks.
After tasting my scoop (with chocolate jimmies, in a sugar cone) I loved it so much my boyfriend insisted we get a pint to go. They staff was super helpful, and friendly. They have tons of flavors of frozen yogurt and dairy-filled ice cream too, and even have soft serve!
3 Scoops is definitely going to be my go-to ice cream shop this summer! If you get out to Brighton Center it's a must try! -

3 scoops is great,
They draw me in with that clever placard outside that outlines how much better one of their healthy cones is than the custard place up the street, and then i end up ordering something else, .haha.
The ice cream is good, and the service is always on point. Only issue is that it seems the soft serve machine is regularly out of order... (or at least when i have happened to pop in)
Otherwise its wonderful. -
Review from Chris C.
I was very underwhelmed with this place and am not sure why people are raving about this place in the other reviews. Seriously have you people ever had ice cream from anywhere else?
The first thing that turned me off to this place was the fact the one freezer case was either broken or turned off and the other one was dirty looking and most the containers they had the ice cream in were beaten up looking and had very noticeably bad freezer burn on them. The selections of flavors was not very good and they didn't have anything bordering interesting. The next issue was the guy working there. He was unfriendly, didn't answer any questions and actually grunted at me at one point instead of using words. The ice cream I was barely better than what you can buy at the grocery store. They were cash only as well unlike almost every other ice cream store in the city. So I will not be returning which I hate because this place is nearby and is not a chain so I want to like it, but just can't. -

I love great ice cream. I love vegan options as well on occasion, which can often be limiting when it comes to dairy because I'm allergic to soymilk. They carry at least a few non-dairy ice creams, some with soy, some with coconut and rice milk. So rarely you see that in an ice cream shop.
They always have at least a few interesting flavors. They're all delicious and always hit the spot (mexican chocolate is excellent)
And they double as an art gallery. I love integrated art spaces. -

I have gone back and I was very excited to see that they now take credit cards. The cookies and cream ice cream is delicious. It is probably the best Oreo ice cream I have ever had. My husband had a milk shake and said it was pretty good.
Cost wise it is really reasonable and worth the 3. The sizes are really big. My husband and I could probably share a medium and both be really full. Highly recommend this place for people. The woman who was working behind the counter was really nice and really helpful. I saw her go in the back and get more oreos for a little girl who requested them.
I also like the fact that they have dog bones for people who bring their dogs in.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Got a small Pumpkin chip which was delicious but as other people have mentioned, $3.64 for a small is pretty steep. We were able to sit outside, which was nice and allowed us to enjoy the unseasonably warm weather.

I just got a coconut ice cream cone from 3 Scoops! I must say, I really enjoyed it!
The ice cream is very soft which I love. I hate really hard scooped ice cream that falls off the cone. This was very milky and quite delicious! I also had some of my friends cone - he got black raspberry which I am not really a fan of but did actually like it.
The inside is small. There are some places to sit near the front. The benches outside are great on a nice summer night.
Cash only would be my only issue. It seems to always hold me back from giving 5 stars to places. I understand there is a fee - but your customer would appreciate it! -

This was my first time back to Three Scoops in about three years.
The new low fat frozen yogurt options are great (and also vegan friendly options). They definitely have the upper hand over Abbotts in this respect.
The woman working the counter was very nice and pleasant. The low fat yogurt I ordered was good. The atmosphere is very pleasant as well.
Why only three stars? The portions are way too small. I ordered a medium cup that was tiny in comparison to other ice cream places like JP Licks, Chill, etc. I looove my ice cream and when I order two or three scoops, I want a full two or three scoops. Please offer more generous portions and your ice cream lovers will definitely keep coming back for more. I plan to try this place one more time in the hopes that they regulate their portions. -

I used to live on the same block as 3 Scoops and would go there maybe 3 times a week on average -- when the weather wasn't bitch cold. This has as much to do with the ice cream as it does with the fact that the owner is really effing hot.
Really great ice cream and good toppings - they often get special flavors that are really good (although I found the idea of Jalapeno ice cream kind of suspect). My only qualm with 3 Scoops is that the soft serve machine is down during the non-summer months. Boo! -

I'd recommend the mint chocolate chip or the banana cookies and cream.

I have an eating disorder. It's very difficult for me to eat an ice cream cone without getting my cone hand all sticky from melting run-off. I've tried various ice cream eating techinques to avert the problem but the only thing that's really worked is not walking outside with it in the middle of summer.
My condition is aggravated by the ice cream at 3 Scoops because they don't keep their product cold enough--it starts melting as soon as it hits the cone. I suppose I could do the cone in the cup compromise but that's a tacit admission of pre-middle age I'm not ready to make just yet.
The ice cream here tastes good, but it's nothing to write home about. But I like that I can walk there and back again to and from my home and usually be done with my cone once I'm back... especially because I'm generally in need of a faucet once I get there.
Sometimes I wonder if they're illegally trading in endangered species out of the back of the shop since they don't seem to do enough business to pay the rent there. -

hahahaha...it's really funny to me that people think 3 scoops is a front because i know the family who owns the shop.
It's a family run place with 2 brothers (Mac and Nick) working the counter. Mac is there most days and is friendly and helpful when sampling flavors. He will always be up for talking about the Sox or Pats or the weather or whatever you throw at him. He is a huge nerd so throw a big word at him and he'll 1. know the meaning already or 2. look it up in his handy, dandy dictionary on the counter. (ps I can call him a nerd because he's actually a pretty good friend of mine). I work right down the street so I am usually there on my lunch break sampling flavors, chatting with Mac, and advising customers on what to get. Nick, the older brother, usually works nights and is a little less outgoing than Mac. But I think he's just shy. He's always helpful and polite....just quiet.
My suggestions: black and white frappe (yum! my fave!) with fresh whipped cream. My other favorite is the mint oreo but they don't always have it in. They should make it a permanent flavor! Get there!
PS - They still only take cash but there is a Bank of America ATM right next door. -

I made a grave mistake. I ordered vegan "ice cream." I know, I know, I apologize profusely, Dairy Queen/ King out there. But I went back to 3 Scoops yesterday, a beautiful, sunshiny, late September Boston day that felt like a July day in southern CA, and I ordered the coconut ice cream, in a cup. It was dreamy and creamy and smooth. And I got to sit outside, and I was a bit sunburnt. And the employees at 3 Scoops asked to take our picture. Which was odd, but it must have been because they noticed the pure joy in our pink faces. So. A 3 for now, 3 Scoops. That's an average score. But now that we are neighbors, you will have plenty of shots at redemption.

Review from Lauren V.
Well I suppose it is high time that I update this review seeing as I am averaging one trip a week lately.
The store is dangerously close to my house and the walk there entails walking up a semi-steep hill. Therefore, ordering a frozen yogurt feels justifiable to me.
The inside of the store features a revolving display of art, glass jars of broken up candy toppings to taunt you, a cooler of drinks and of course the ice cream and frozen yogurt. The guy behind the counter is somewhat quiet but polite and amiable.
I wish that they had soft-serve year round, but oh well. The last few times I was there it was still unavailable. I still generally go for the Belgian Chocolate frozen yogurt as I delude myself into thinking that it does not, in fact, cancel out a workout. (It totally does.) Occasionally, I have treated myself to such specialty flavors as black raspberry with dark and white chocolate chips (OMG, yum) and S'mores (sofreakingood!). My treats rarely last the short walk back to my house.
There are tables and chairs inside plus benches flanking the entrance if you (oddly) think that walking and eating is despicable like my boyfriend does. (Yeah, he is strange.)
And remember, as the sign says - straight cash, homey.Listed in: Cheapish Dates

This seasonal ice cream parlor has plenty of love here, I can see! When I lived in Brighton, I would make my trek down on summer nights for some ice cream. The cookie dough kind and strawberry was great. The prices are reasonable too and they really hook you up with the scooper.
The guys behind the counters were nice, always open to letting me try a new one before tasting it. The store is really cute inside, very clean, bright , cool art work and several tables to sit at. I'm I'm in that area, I'll certainly stop in for more treats.Listed in: Frozen Treats

This place has been around for years - probably about as long as I have been in my current job of 8 years. And every summer we wonder if the place was going to open for another season. One year I even think there was paper up on the windows, indicating another business casualty, only to have the place re-open a few weeks later. Maybe it keeps changing hands, or they are into this mysteriousness they are creating, but the whole 'mafia' theory is something that actually clicks, now that I read it.
But as for the ice cream - DAMN. The Moosetracks alone sucked me in - and even though they didn't have any when I just popped in there, their coffee oreo was some of the creamiest heaven I have tasted in years.
I tend to grab froyo at ice cream shops, to feel a bit less guilty - but I just can't do it here - the ice cream is that good.
it is often empty here, so it may be mobbed up. But so was the Bada Bing, and I know you all look for that place when you get stuck driving through Jersey.
or maybe that's just me. -

Is this the ice cream mafia? The reviews below seem to concur with me... though it's no longer a cash only joint.
Either way, I don't really care. The ice cream and frozen yogurt here are delicious. I got the peanut butter froyo and enjoyed every lick of the cone.
Prices are reasonable, especially considering the fact that someone else is getting their knuckles all sticky scooping the ice cream instead of your knuckles. Plus you get to sit on the benches in front of 3 Scoops making everyone who walks by jealous of your delicious frozen treat. Clearly the extra mula is worth it.
Last time I was here the young guy scooping was getting harassed by this 12 year old who was obviously in some way related. It made me laugh.
Oh - sprinkles are free. BONUS! -

Support your locally-owned, awesome ice cream shop!
There's a cold stone creamery practically across the street, but I always pass it up for 3 Scoops (unless it's closed). The flavors are delicious, inventive and fresh. My favorites this season are green tea, coconut, and moosetracks. They also have done a rockin' thai iced tea flavor, which I hope will reappear in the near future.
It's thick, a little chewy (which I personally enjoy) and bursting with (insert particular flavor type) flavor. The scoops are generously doled out, the guys behind the counter are as sweet as what they sell, and the price is right. -

I enjoy 3 Scoops primarily due to there benches outside, so I can hang out with my pup on a warm evening (Yoghund in hand of course!). The guys behind the counter are quiet, but when the whole neighborhood is in there, that's understandable.
I realize Cold Stone is literally three blocks down the street with outdoor seating as well, but it's true, their ice cream makes you feel so heavy afterwards. Plus, 3 Scoops has doggie treats! -

The best ice cream in the Boston area. Hands down.
This place is clean, and you get your money's worth for the ice cream. Great prices. I love their cookies and cream flavor - it's rich and delightful.

This is the best ice cream in Boston.
I haven't tried Christina's which people like, but that's in Cambridge, so my statement remains unedited.
As I make more of my own ice cream, I am harder to please with large-batch ice cream. Its just generally not made with love!!
The first time I went to 3 Scoops I said to my friend, this tastes like small-batch ice cream (read, homemade). I am on weight watchers, which is tough for a foodie, but the Belgian Chocolate frozen yogurt is out of this world. My friend had the coffee oreo ice cream and I'm pretty sure my eyes bugged out of their sockets when I tasted some. Since that day I've tasted the peanut-butter fudge swirl ice cream (good enough to use allowance points on), strawberry, black raspberry (less flavorful than other flavors), and others. Except black raspberry, everything has been out of this world. Seriously, best ice cream in Boston. -

3 Scoops Rocks!
Since moving to Brighton this has been my favorite spot for ice cream. They always have new and interesting flavors. The new staff is really friendly and always has great suggestions. My favorite flavor is their cookies and cream.
The ice cream is always fresh and is made by the staff.
They're also dog friendly. They'll give customers water and have dog treats so you can sit outside and your dog can have something to snack on too.
There's a reason why other ice cream shops have come and gone, while this one has stayed. -

I recently went to this ice cream place after not having been in over two years, and WOW! I cannot wait to go back! (By the way, they now accept credit cards)
They have a lot of choices from vegan ice cream, low cal ice cream, super rich and thick high cal ice cream, your standard ice cream, to frozen yogurt and TONS of flavors!
One of the people who makes the ice cream was in the day I went and he was incredibly friendly offering this and that to try! He said they have lots of flavors that are not out to see or on the list so just ask. They also make their own fudge sauce.
You can also have a pint packed to go!
There is seating inside and out side and they have treats for those who bring their dogs. -

Awesome ice cream parlor. The staff is friendly and engaging and there is a nice selection of ice cream and frozen yogurt to choose from. I have not tried the soft serve yet but I will! The peanut butter frozen yogurt (100% fat free) is absolutely delicious. Last time I was there I got a free waffle with whipped cream and fresh cherries... also delicious. And apparently if you bring a friend on Tuesdays you get free ice cream. It's too bad that I live so close! Also, I hear they have great dairy free options, which is always a good thing.

This place has good ice cream but the new ownership seems to be cutting corners. They raised prices and the portions are about half as much. They use flat lids now instead of the domed ones so if you get it to go you get significantly less. I've gone a few times thinking that maybe it was just the person scooping but they all seem to be frugal with the portions which tells me they've been told to do that.
Too bad....used to be my favorite.....back to JP licks and Abbotts. -

I recently moved to Brighton and my aunt did me a big favor by helping me and letting me borrow her car. She wanted to be repaid for this in ice cream and the people downstairs recommended 3 Scoops.
I was not disappointed. My mom and aunt had sundaes which looked to die for, tons of whipped cream, which is really the best part of a good sundae. I opted for a chocolate frappe which was nice and thick, very very rich. I was a big fan. The sizes were great and they are very reasonably priced. Definitely a much better choice than the Coldstone across the street. -
Review from Jamie G.
Not impressed with this place. Only came here because Abbott's Custard is closed on Mondays (grrr) and this place was down the block. The ice cream behind the glass counter is in these weird cardboard boxes that were practically all empty, making all the ice cream look very unappealing. The guy behind the counter was not very talkative, friendly or helpful. This place was so not impressive that I don't even remember what I had. Probably some sort of coffee flavor in a waffle cone. Not worth my money or time. Will stick with my custard at Abbott's. And whoever said this was the best ice cream in Boston is crazy. White Mountain Creamery is WAY better for ice cream.

Meh...
It's pretty good. Quality small-batch ice cream, I can tell they're using good ingredients. But there's just not that much variety...yeah, the green tea ice cream is sorta kinda interesting, but I can get that at any Japanese restaurant. I want some real imagination from homemade ice cream! This place doesn't have it. But if you just want the usual classic flavors, they make 'em really well. I thought my frappe was a little under-blended, but no big deal. -

This place has AMAZING ice cream. They always had a variety of unique flavors and a nice staff. I was a big fan of the fact that they will let you have scoops of different flavors, since i can never choose between them all. My favorite was the dark chocolate. The interior is small but cute. They have some interesting art on the walls. The outside benches are a great people-watching spot, but there are only two. Downside is that they are cash only - at least when I was there.
