My review is for the BRUNCH experience only.

Atmosphere: Try to stay out in the patio-ish area where it's full of windows and sunlight.  That will just brighten up your day (literally) instead of the dark wooded seclusion of the bar area.  Also the music isn't as loud out there so you can actually carry on a conversation with your friends.

Price: Such a deal!  You get a full load of food for most dishes under $10.  That's impressive for my wallet as well as my tummy.

Food: All my companions' dishes always look delish.  I will come back time and time again for ONE specific dish that blows my mind.  The beef tenderloin benedict leaves me speechless (mainly because I'm stuffing my face with no time to talk.)  Meat and poached eggs cooked to perfection.  Why use a boring English muffin when you can serve a potato pancake drizzled with a "you know it's not healthy but ooooh so good" Hollandaise sauce.  Side of asparagus? Okay!

Other shout outs to amazing dishes: French Toast Monkey Cristo (a well worth it heart attack on a plate), Bagel with Lox (I feel so Jewish eating this, but they knock it outta the park!) and the Tri Pork Omelette (three types of pork...'nough said.)

Go to 3 Monkeys! Or don't go....so that I can keep this place all to myself. :-P Just kidding, see ya there.

I'll concede that it might not be entirely fair to judge a restaurant's food solely by it's salads, but 1) you gotta work hard to screw up a salad; 2) I tried several so I've got a good sampling to go on. We ordered the chicken Asian, steak with cranberries and blue cheese, and fried oysters and bacon over spinach. How can you go wrong with fried oysters and bacon? But they did. I was also really excited about the spicy ginger chile dressing--way too sweet with a weird aftertaste. Basically all 3 options fell flat--meh. Perhaps their cooked dishes are more successful?

Service was slow and there was no one in there when we stopped by on a lazy Sunday. Positive note: cocktails were pretty good and we tried a few of those as well. Chocolate monkey was very tasty, mojitoes were good--good selection of flavors--spicy bloody Marys.

This rating may be unfair, it just depends on what you are coming here for. If it's the food or service, then it deserves ZERO stars. If it's the atmopshere and late nite drinking and mingling, it could easily get 4 stars.

Bottom Line - Late night is much more promising than lunch would be.

    Why/When I tried it

My brother graduated from VCU on Dec 9 and we stopped in here after the ceremony for a congratulatory brunch.

    Location/accessibility

I don't really know a lot about Richmond so I can't really comment.  My brother said he comes to 3 Monkeys sometimes for the nightlife, so I figure it can't be too far out of the way.  There was plenty of street parking and apparently there is also a lot behind the restaurant.  Not bad.

    Atmosphere

Having been in college not long ago myself, I can tell when a nocturnal, crowded, dive bar tries to impersonate a trendy, hipster cafe during the day--welcome to 3 Monkeys.

    Menu/pricing

The menu was standard brunch food at a pretty decent price.  Our dad picked up the check, so that helped defray our costs :-)

    Food

I tried the ham, asparagus, and brie omelette.  It was a great combination.

    Service

    Service was fine.

    Grading

The food and atmosphere were good, not great.  Altogether they made for an OK dining experience.  If I go back to Richmond, I'm not exactly making a bee line for 3 Monkeys.

3 Monkeys is like a lot of Fan restaurant/bars nearby.  Nothing really differentiates it, so it's easy for me to pass by it.  Not that you can't find good food here, because you can... I guess I've just outgrown it.  It does have a great climate-controlled patio (like Starlite).  I usually only eat here for brunch and go for the crabmeat Benedict.

I've never had a bad meal here. The service has been great in my experience. Eat on the enclosed porch even during the coldest months. I go at least once a month and have never been disappointed. They have always been nice enough to customize my orders for my allergies.

Went for drinks and a small dinner with my boyfriend. He stuck with a beer (smart) and I went for a traditional mojito, which apparently was a highlight on the drink menu.

The mojito was terrible. I am by no means a drink connoisseur, but this tasted like a straight up vodka tonic, with the occasional tasteless mint leaf going up my straw. It was undrinkable, to say the least.

The pork nachos were acceptable, but could have used salsa. The dish was pretty dry.

Thumbs down. Save your money for Carytown.

I haven't been to 3 Monkeys in a few months and I truly do enjoy their food but just not all of it.

Three of us went here on a Saturday around 2:30 for lunch and sat on the patio...the servers and host were extremely friendly...the bartender took a litle while for her to get to us because she was engrossed in a conversation with someone else at the bar...

I ordered their version of a grilled cheese on rye bread with three cheese, tomatoes, and bacon...really sinful...but oh so good.  Along with the sandwich came a side of fries which I really wished I hadn't ordered because their was about a pound of huge chunks of salt all over them.  I'm sure some people want to die of a heart attack, but not me.  Next time, I'll remember to order the onion straws because I've had them before and they be tasty!

One of the other diners I was with ordered the Monkey burger which has traditionally been really good but was slightly over done and thus dry...either way, he ate the burger and we all went our happy way.

Overall, this visit was a three star visit but other than a few other mishaps, i.e. having to wait for ketchup and mayo for like 5 minutes after we got our food...that was realllll obnoxious.

Anyways, take care and savor it up!

Monkey fries (Please don't give me a heart attack)!!!

Came for a happy hour drink and what can be said other than $2 dollar domestic bottles from 4pm to 7pm. That's almost as cheap as staying home. Since staying home and drinking by yourself is the mark of an alcoholic, I rather pay a little more and absolve myself of the feeling that I drink too much. Then you order some monkey fries, fries swimming in melted cheese and bacon and you just stop thinking all together! A truely delicious but greasy affair. Need to try there menu a little more before I can say if it's good or not but the fries were a good start.

The service was attentive and friendly. I had a tab going at the bar but the waitresses were still willing to bring me a drink at the table we were at and charge it to my tab. Not really that big of a deal but I appreciated the effort.

This is a fun, affordable place to grab a filling meal. Nothing stood out as bad, and nothing stood out as being amazing. They have a cheap wine list, and the food is all pretty decent.

I had a half 3-Mushroom Pizza, half Chicken/Bacon/Red Onion Pizza. Hoping when they advertise three mushrooms that it would involve something delicious like morels or porcini, I was sorely disappointed to see three different sizes of button mushrooms. Unfortunately, the chicken was a little dry too. However the mozzarella was good quality, and the sauce and crust were good. I'm not sure I'll ever get used to the thicker Richmond-style crusts, but this one was fluffy and filling. I also threw back a glass of the house pinot noir, which was a decent pour for only $6. My friend had a veggie pizza and was very pleased with hers. Our salad was fine, but nothing spectacular.

I like the atmosphere of the restaurant, especially the enclosed porch. It's great for people watching and the service is nice and relaxed. However I'm not sure I'll be going back on a regular basis for mediocre, when the other restaurants around town have been surprisingly great.

A couple of things about this place I really like:

    1) Affordable

2)Great portion size and interesting specials.  Today at lunch I had "beef tenderloin sliders with homemade chipolte BBQ sauce, and french fries."  The sliders were pretty much full size hamburger rolls, each with thin slices of nicely cooked tenderloin beef, cheese, grilled onions, tomato, lettuce and a plateful of french fries.  Downside is I almost fell asleep at my desk this afternoon. Probably not a great place for a business lunch, but a great place to get an affordable bite with friends and enjoy a few beers.

3)When the weather gets nice they open the windows on the patio for an open air feel.

    4) Good location as a stop on a Robinson Street Crawl, close to (but more casual than) Carytown, and a couple blocks to VMFA

There is nothing about 3 Monkeys that strikes one as being different enough or good enough to give it 4 stars. Owners Katrina & Johnny Giovas ( Sidewalk Cafe, Stella's, Kuba Kuba, and Kitchen 64) and George Tsipas ( Paul's Deli in Williamsburg,VA) have put together another restaurant that is......well.....a lot like all their other restaurants.

The big problem with many establishments in this area of the fan, especially those on the "Robinson/Main Walk of Shame" tend to be way better bars then they are restaurants. I think 3 Monkeys is a place where people go to grease the gun whales before a heavy night of drinking or use that food to sop up what they have already drank. Serious diners won't go to 3 Monkeys are really any of the other places mentioned as they are all just different takes on the same type of bar food with a twist that gets tiresome after a while. Don't get me wrong, you will be blown away by portion size and I would venture to say that almost anything you get will be decent. I guess I am just getting tired of the same old formula. 3 Monkeys serves brunch from 9:30am-2:30 pm on Sat and Sun.

This can be said for many other "restaurants" along this familiar strip and it is just the way it has pretty much always been. The list reads the same deLux(better than the rest), Sticky Rice (Asian fusion so a little bit of a different twist but more of a bar still), FW Sullivans, 3 Monkeys, Starlite, Metro Grill, Racine and Buddy's. All of which have potential to be great restaurants but the allure of the highly profitable bar business will always win out.

If you want bar food to go with your drinking then 3 Monkeys is fine. If you are looking for a special occasion or a cut about the rest, you can do better elsewhere.

Most young residents end up at 3 Monkeys pretty frequently for drinks. The drink prices are reasonable, but it gets very crowded as the night goes on.

The food is okay, about on par with bar food. The Monkey Fries were good, as was the Monkey Cristo. The hummus plate was below average, but not awful.

If you're looking to hang out with a bunch of people in the early-twenties this is the place for you, where you can grab some decent pub food as well. This isn't a place I'd go to for a stand alone lunch or dinner, however.

I end up at 3 Monkeys most often for drinks or brunch. I like the outdoor-ish seating area that's great for people watching, as well as the cocktail menu and affordable wine list. The bartenders here are quick and friendly. They do a good job of handling the busy crowds that come here at night.

Which brings me to one of my no-so-favorite things about this place. It's not a big restaurant, but it is a popular night spot, so if you want to get a drink in the evening, prepare to be bumped by throngs of college kids and 20 somethings looking to hit on them.

I think the food is decent for a bar spot, but not spectacular. My favorite menu item is the Greek salad with grilled tilapia on top. The hummus plate is also very good and loaded with hummus, feta and fresh veggies. A lot of the other items on the brunch, lunch and dinner menus sound great, but just don't quite hit the point of amazing. The last time I got the Monkey Fries, the cheese on them was a bit bland. Similarly, my eggs bruschetta were a yummy idea, but just a little lacking. It's not that I wouldn't or don't eat here, I just wouldn't recommend it for awesome food.

I do loving getting a table on the patio here in the evening and hanging out with some drinks, though.

If you go, there is a small parking lot in the alley behind the building.

My friends like this bar.  I don't.   But I'm kind of a bar and lounge snob.  I like bars with tasty, uniqe beverages.  If I wanted an appletini I'd just make it at home, and save a few bucks.

It's packed, loud, and just another pickup joint in the bland RVA bar scene.

There's colorful "martinis" to be had, and they do put a little plastic monkey on them, so that's cool.  The bartenders seem good.  Too bad it bores me.

Our quick visit to Richmond started here to meet a friend who literally lives caddy corner to 3 Monkeys. We sat on the patio, which was good for people watching (and a nice view of 3 TVs), but I wish the windows opened more. It was a little stuffy. Good selection of beers on tap and they serve brunch until 3pm. I had the Monkey Cristo, which was a combo of a french toast and a Monte Cristo sandwich. It came with a side of crispy potatoes and syrup for dipping. The sandwich was inventive - who doesn't love brie, prosciutto and turkey on french toast? But it was a tad bland. The potatoes were really good though. Buffalo wings are standard bar fare, but nicely sauced. The burgers were declared decent.

So one time I went to Richmond to move in by boyfriend and had the coincidence of having eaten at this place literally 3 times in a span of maybe 4 days? Mind you this was because of circumstances which include laziness (it's around the block) and then a bunch of friends came into town and again we were lazy and just walked here for brunch hung over....

Anyway, the bottom line is that this place is just mediocre.  The Seared Ahi Tuna salad I got the first time I went there was above average, I'll give it to them.  But, after a few bites I wanted more flavor.

The next meal I had there was a portebello sandwich for lunch the next day.  It was sooo very standard.  The portebello was overcooked and the flavors were not sophisticated at all.  We're talking shredded iceburg lettuce, bad tomatoes, and probably outta the bottle italian dressing.  Not to mention the fries that accompanied were room temp-ish and straight out of a freezer bag.

The very last meal I had at this place was brunch with a bunch of my friends.  I got the omelette bruchetta, that sounded like it would be awesome.. but again was a dissapointment.  Tons of bread with very little omelette and lacking in flavor. Also it was pretty cold.  Home fries were not good, straight out of a freezer bag.

I would not recommend this place. Mehhh.

Some friends took me here...I thought the place might have some charm...but it was not to be.

The patio area, which is an enclosed seating area that feels like a ill-kept greenhouse had a faint smell of vomit.  Not something I wanted to smell right before my lunch.

I had the monkey burger...a burger with avocado, gorgonzola, etc...basically a giant burger with some stuff on it.  The taste combination was ok, but it would have been better just plain.  I ordered fries, but they gave me onion straws, which have virtually no onion in them.  The food wasn't bad, but it wasn't great either.

The atmosphere was a bit lame.  I mean, we walked in and they had CNN on the tv...its the second round of the NCAAs and they were playing CNN.  Is this a bar?

Anyway...I am sure there are better places to eat in Richmond.  Still, it will do in a pinch.

Yaaaaaawn.  I didn't even really want to write this review, but seeing as how I use Yelp as a sort of travel journal, I think I should.  It was not fabulous and not horrible.  I went with my sister and two of her friends, and we just ordered a bunch of appetizers, some good, some not so good.  Service and ambiance were ok, the place was clean, and the menu is expansive enough that anyone can find something they'll like.  Here's what we had, in order of ok-good to ok-eh:

Goat cheese stuffed red peppers: Really tasty, but a bit too heavy.  Would have been better if there had been something other than just cheese in the peppers

Cowboy sushi (beef carpaccio on a tortilla chip with wasabi, ginger, and soy sauce): This was pretty good, but really didn't need the chip.  The Asian flavors all worked well together, so the chip just served no purpose aside from keeping your hands off the beef.

Saganaki (sp?) flambee: This was a plate of good, salty cheese cut into cubes.  Seriously.  When we got it, the waitress poured some alcohol on it and lit it, but I think it didn't stay lit for long enough.  It should have melted the cheese and browned the top, but, well, uh, epic fail on that front.  The bread that came with it was really, really good, though.

Red peppers, mozarella, and basil pizza: Ugh, what a mess.  It was absolutely impossible to eat because there was so much cheese on it.  The crust underneath all the cheese got soggy and gross before the pizza even got to our table, and there were hardly any peppers or basil on it.

Stella's calamari: Rubbery and kind of stinky, but at least one person in our party enjoyed it.

All in all, I'd go back if someone else brought me, and I'm sure the full-priced entrees are better, but I would not go out of my way to recommend this place.

I've been here twice during my time in Richmond and have been impressed each time.

The menu is delightfully eclectic and the restaurant has a casual and festive feel to it. Any place that offers spanakopita as appetizer is bound to be decent.

The spanakopita was impressive, it reminds me of a smaller version of the kind that my mom makes. I also had the falafel sandwich with fries -both of which were good. The fries were curly and extra crispy My friends ordered steaks and a bit of seafood and enjoyed both. The drinks from the bar were also quality: good selection of beer and strong, tasty mixed drinks.

Overall: a good experience at a good price.

On a recent road trip from Chapel Hill to Washington D.C. I stopped in here with some friends mainly because it was a Sunday night and not much else was opened.

The service was super friendly and accommodating, but the food wasn't anything to write home about as it were. I had their burger and it was forgettable. My friends had the Jambalaya and the Pizza. Out of everything the pizza was the clear winner and is what I'd order if I ever find myself in Richmond again,

The highlight for me was the fact that their background Music was Indie Rock and they played a lot of bands from the Northwest which I wasn't expecting at all in VA.

Wow, the bartenders at 3 Monkeys are MUCH better than they used to be.  After the 2nd round all I had to do was show my face in the vicinity of the bar and they had my beer ready.  I would have never expected this kind of treatment here.

The dinner fare is good, but for the price I'd rather go to Davis & Main or somewhere else that doesn't turn into a bar at 10; brunch-wise I'd just go to Bamboo or Curbside nearby.  3 Monkeys' brunch never quite hits the spot (eggs overcooked, burned toast, etc.) and is overpriced compared to other places in the area (just like dinner).

The late night crowd is pretty standard, although not having the standard $1 Fan PBRs seems to keep out the VCU Art department.  There is an older "gentleman" who likes to come in occasionally and slug martinis while creepily staring at girls.

When all is said and done I would usually give a place like 3 Monkeys 3 stars for being completely average but the bartenders have really stepped it up as of late and it's also nice going to a place in the Fan where the bouncers actually know when to cut off the floodgates at the door.  Also I find the communal bathroom sink hilarious as it puts everyone on the spot "That girl that just bought ___ a shot just dropped a deuce without washing her hands, NICE"

Came here for a much-needed post-work happy hour with my coworkers...it was pretty cheap I think, for a giant plate of Monkey Fries and a vodka soda, my bill only came out to about $8. Can't really write a comprehensive review of the food since that was all I had, but the Monkey Fries (while addicting) had way too much congealed cheese on it for me to ever consider ordering it again. However, I wouldn't mind coming back here on other occasions. Our waitress was very sweet and more than accommodating, which was nice.

It's ok. I wasn't impressed by my eggplant sandwich which had WAY to much bread, basic store bought Italian dressing, and under cooked eggplant, but I think everyone else in my party sorta enjoyed their food and the fries are tasty. They have a nice indoor patio area, but it smells a lot from smoke.

This place turns into a crowded bar on weekend nights that's frequented by a college crowd. I'd probably go back to party, but not to eat.

Came on a Friday night. Busy place with a college crowd. Alt rock on the sound system.

Pros: busy place, fun to people watch walkers from the patio, waitress didn't charge us for the sodas which she said were "off", did notice they tasted too sweet. Drink specials were cheap. 2 drafts, 1 bottle, fries, and 2 sodas that were comped came out to 12 bucks.

    M'eh: fries were just ok

    Cons: smokers, college scene +/-

Beef tenderloin wrap with mixed greens, tomatoes and gorgonzola cheese and a side of potato salad. Hot damn that was good. Dug the outside closed patio section. Extensive menu with just about everything.
Definitely entertaining the idea of coming back- I was impressed by the food, beef was cooked tender and the complexity of tastes in a wrap had me loving every portion of it.

I will never go to 3 Monkeys late night as I don't consider it a bar. I pretty much have only gone for lunch or an early dinner, as we all know the crowd that arrives later on.

The sandwiches are pretty much the backbone of the place - their french dip is what pulled that fourth star out, it is quite good. Their burger is... just a burger, not quite sure what reviewers expect when they order them. Their bread is usually nicely toasted and their sandwiches are served with your choice of side.

I think that in order to work at 3 Monkeys as a server you must be a college aged semi-good looking girl and that their uniform code is all black and as little fabric as the weather will allow.

Not a complaint, just an observation.

My opinion may be skewed because I came here on my birthday and got incredibly trashed but of what I do recall of my food-- I believe I may have gotten some kind of seafood, as well as an appetizer, it was delicious.

Also, had ordered some cocktails and they were extremely strong and good.

This outdoor seating is great for people watching, as it's it's located in the middle of Main St., and it's always filled with a bustling crowd of people at night.

Would love to go back and check it out when sober!

My wife and i had the calamari and it smelled like it was days old and could make you sick, we sent it back, ugh. Then we ordered some simple hamburgers, hard to mess that up right? Well, they sent us well-done instead of med-rare and covered their mistake with fancy toppings. Overall making a bad burger that costs 9 dollars. We were bummed, we thought Greek bar meant good squid and good burgers. I guess the fries were good.

Saturday night cocktails were tasty but the lack of standing room made it difficult to enjoy without a table. Brunch the next morning was a straight disappointment. The waitress forgot to put in our order and our food arrived cold. The breakfast pizza spotted across the room looked better than our French Toast Monte Cristo and eggs sunny-side up. Don't waste your time or your dining experience with either of our selections.

Service was great, atmosphere was quaint. But way too loud for my taste. Its a small place, with maximum tables crammed in. The food was okay, but not really worth the price.

This place is a bar with a restaurant, or is it a restaurant with a bar?  Well, whatever it is, it's on the small side with an enclosed patio in the front facing the street.  Nothing much in the way of atmosphere.   The food was A-Ok.  The service was great.  Tori was our server and she did a bang-up job.

We had the goat cheese appetizer with roasted garlic, although we are not usually ones to eat whole cloves of roasted garlic, especially when we have work the next day : ).  Our dinner salads were *really* good, with a fantastic array of fresh ingredients piled high, as well as a pleasing selection of dressings from which to choose.  For my entrée, I ordered the seafood risotto and was happy with it except that the rice was cooked somewhat al dente - not my favorite.  There was a ton of seafood in the risotto - large shrimp, big slices of squid, oysters and huge scallops.  Three Monkeys does *not *skimp on ingredients!  I just wish the seafood had been as hot as the risotto.  For some reason it was not.... sort of as if it had been prepared seperately from the rissoto, set aside and allowed to cool too much.  I ordered a 'Nutty Monkey' martini, which I loved, and want to get the recipe.

All-in-all, not great but not bad either.  They just need to do some fine tuning and then I think they will be a winner.

The food is good.  Apps are HUGE and filling.  The server was friendly and worked her hardest to please our group.  The menu is fun, and there are a lot of options to choose from.  The entrees were flavorful and delightful.
Unfortunately I went on a Friday night with my family and we got stuck at the one table in the middle of the rows of booths.  Apparently this is the WORST place to be after 7 PM.  This place turns into a full blown bar with full on drunken people smoking what seems to be cartons of cigs.  EW.  This place should @ least be smoke free till 10 PM.  By the time we were finished we had to rush to pay b/c drinkers were standing way to close to us all around our table....we felt like a suffocating floating island (they also cranked the music).  When I was done all i could say was "get me outta here!".  However i might go back for a much less crowded lunch.  Sad to say that the ambiance kicked this place down a star for me.

Love this place- great food and yummy drinks.  The menu is diverse and unique and the dishes are tasty.  I love that they are open for brunch, and have an enclosed porch where you can sit with the windows wide open when the weather is nice.  They also have a nice drink selection, and well-priced beers.  Good place for a happy hour.

Okay, the waitress was friendly and attentive and the place had a great atmosphere, but the beer was incredibly flat, they managed to screw up a margarita, the crab dip tasted like cream cheese, and my buffalo wrap had no buffalo sauce and more blue cheese crumples than chicken... send your enemies here when they come to town, you will be glad you did.

you MUST order the cowboy sushi.  It is quite good...seared beef carpaccio on homemade tortilla chips and dressed with wasabi, a soy reduction and maybe that Sriracha sauce.  Has a little kick to it!
