This place has a very unique and eclectic vibe which I really enjoy.  We have eaten here several times and have never had a bad meal.

The menu choices are not vast but there is something for everyone.  They carry a decent selection of wines as well, including some local favorites.  I love to have the Dark and Gruesome salad which can really be something you share since it's Ginormous.  I asked for plates once and they brought tiny little bread plates so it's best to just dig in and share with a friend.  I had the little burgers once and that's a mistake if you are going to be anywhere that you might get garlic breath on someone but they are very delicious otherwise.

The ambience is interesting.  We love the back wall of old Redwood (I assume that's what it is).  They often have local musicians to entertain you.  I'm not sure how else to describe it but it different and not in a bad way.

Service is usually good.  Last time I went I had to wait for a friend and once she came and they took her drink order it was kind of an unreasonable wait to place our order.  We didn't mind terribly since we were in no rush and enjoying each other's company over a glass of wine.

You might find the little fish crackers they bring out in a little bowl odd but then I did say this place is unique, remember?

I highly recommend 3Foods.  They don't take reservations and they do get really busy even on weeknights.  They have a quaint little seating area outside the door if you have to wait for a table .

Ok first of all, I hate ragging on this place because my friend is a fellow cook there and their ambiance is great. More than great, it may be the one thing that makes the place work.
I've heard this place used to have sub-par food and that it's gotten better, but my last visit was anything but. Usually if the food doesn't blow me away on the first try, I may reluctantly give them a second shot. Even though this place already depressed me with their food twice, I went against my better judgement and gave them a third shot being that I was entertaining a couple friends from out of town.
I had chickpeas in dip as an appetizer and a chicken dish made with carrotts.
The food was so bland, and uninspired- no amount of hunger sauce could distract me from that fact. The chickpea thing was just weird. I love doing creative Mediterranean things with garbanzos, but like I said this was totally lacking any imagination.
The portions weren't huge or anything, but they were adequate. And I have not tried their wine selection.
    Take-home message: Three Foods Cafe= 3rd strike= 3 DULL foods cafe
Shawn, I'm sure you're a great Chef de partie- but who's the executive chef in charge? Seriously!

Hurt So Good is amazing.  I like the Light and Lovely Salad, and the Harold and Kumar little burgers are really yummy too.  First time I went there I loved it, I like the whimsical little menus and my boyfriend loves the fact that they give you goldfish crackers ;-)  Some of the dishes are not so great... it's kind of a hit and miss.
Good service.  My main problem is that they have no heat.  It sounds silly but I really didn't enjoy my time there last time because it was so chilly and I had to keep my coat on the whole time.
I will definitely go back (but maybe in the warmer months).

Just to be clear, we are not people afraid of too much salt or fat.
    Atmosphere = great
Wine/drinks list = awesome with fun mixers & biodynamic wines
Mac & Cheese = unnecessarily salty & heavy
Linguica w/veggies over cheese grits = unnecessarily oily (1 inch grease floating on top)
    Hurts so good - good.
Candied dates with goat cheese sauce = goat cheese sauce good, dates ok but together wasn't really working - too sweet & over the top strange

Smaller menu in a smaller setting with really tall ceilings.  This place is fun and has its niche.   Not to many vegan options, but very meat and veggie friendly.  It's not my first choice to eat at but I enjoy a lot of their stuff.  Small but good wine an beer list.

Star of David and prices buttermilk are 2 of my fans.

Was so happy to find a restaurant with a gluten-free menu! I had the french curry which was delicious. It would be nice if they had a kid's menu since the mac and cheese my daughter got was huge! Nice atmosphere and our server was very friendly, will definitely return if I pass through Arcata again.

I originally had a great experience at 3 Foods.  However, I think that was due to random luck.  Since the first experience, which prompted my first review, everything I've ordered has tasted extremely horrible.  I've left the last three times not only feeling I could have made the dish at home, but knowing that if I was to make that dish at home that I would have made it much better.  I'm not even a good cook.  I'm not exaggerating when I say that a pumpkin bread pudding they were serving made me gag.  The prominent flavors, to my surprise, were cumin and salt.

People I guess talk about their mac and cheese, which is definitely one of the better things they offer.  It's nothing to rave about though - far from.

The best part about 3 Foods, and why it has two stars and not one, is the wait staff.  I have always found them friendly and enjoyable.

This was my first time going here and I had heard rave reviews about the Mac & Cheese dish they had there. So, I went with a very open mind. For starters we ordered the tater tots and I ordered the mac and cheese dish, "What the...?" and my boyfriend ordered the Vietnamese Pork and Beans. The wait for the food was a bit long, but we had water and goldfish crackers to tide us over while we watched all the hipsters in Arcata enjoy their food. Very hipster scene.

My mac and cheese was disgustingly salty, almost to the point where I couldn't even eat it. I spent most of the meal sneaking bites off my boyfriends pork and bean dish because that was an amazing dish. I really wish I had ordered it.

I probably will come here again and order something different or get the pork and beans, but I will never recommend the SALTY mac and cheese.

Great ambiance and food. Makes me feel like I'm stepping it up for the evening and not breaking the bank. Dishes are unique to 3 Foods alone. A true artistry of flavors, presentation, and vibe. Food's a bit rich, always bring home seconds... But I don't mind that at all. Find a reason to come to this place and have everyone order something different and share meals. 3 Foods is really a culinary experience.

3 foods is good.   The service is great.
They do an all you can eat spaghetti night for cheap, which is a bonus for hungry HSU students.

The food is overworked and over seasoned-  but still in the realm of good.  It seems like they've got their spoons in too many different types of cuisine to really learn to do any one of them well.

The staff is really quite friendly, attentive and helpful- which I appreciate, and is why I eat there every so often.

I'd like to have the option to give them 3.5 stars.

"If you are a dreamer, come in."
3 Foods Cafe's menu begins with this whimsical line from a Shel Silverstein poem. Their menu is in loose leaf form, bound between pieces of upcycled hardback library books. It included charming details like Alice in Wonderland illustrations, Eenie; Meenie; Miney; Mo instead of the typical "Entrees, Desserts" sections, and super quirky names for all the dishes.

I was overwhelmed with a feeling of home when I swung open the large front doors to 3 Foods Cafe. The joint has an stately aesthetic with high ceilings, white painted walls, plus the back wall was covered with lacquered hardwood panels. Our table was waiting for us (although I wouldn't have minded sitting in the waiting area arranged like a mini parlor room). They served goldfish rather than bread!  I ordered their lavender lemonade, fresh lemon juice infused with lavender blooms served with mint leaves. The "Bus Driver" entree was sesame fried chicken tenders and garlic cream cheese nutmeg mashed potatoes drizzled with raspberry coulis. Their famous Mac n cheese is made of pasta shells, a cheese blend, bits of chicken, and green apples! The check comes in mini wooden coffin with a petite metal pitcher containing chocolate covered almonds. The decor is ridden with unexpected whimsical touches and literary references. Perfect choice for those who seek the unique!

To add to my previous review since I've been eating at 3 Foods fairly regularly since then and am now a fan....

The first time I went to 3 Food the waitress spilled an entire tray of water on me...yes, an entire tray of water for our table of 12. I was wearing a brand new $200 silk jacket (last time I wore that to a restaurant or anywhere with food and drinks) and peep toe shoes...I had water dripping out my shoes...but it's my own fault for trying to dress fashionably in Humboldt. The waitress gave me $10 for my jacket to be dry cleaned and a free dessert coupon.

Needless to say, that didn't stop me from returning. The Mac n cheese is to DIE FOR. seriously. My boyfriend and I split it and couldn't even finish it.

I usually get the Dark and Gruesome salad to go. If I am dining-in I like to get the Hurts so Good (Korean stir fry) or the veggie mu shu. But generally I just do take out...it's always ready quickly even on their busy nights.

Set off the plaza behind the Co-op, next to a garden is 3 Foods Cafe. This place is usually busy for dinners every night. The food is good, sometimes great. But I think thats the appeal with a menu thats often changing. There are a few old standbys, but why not try the new creation? The atmosphere is good when there isnt a band, but thats just my personal thing. Ive had mixed quality service, but its always worked out to be a thoroughly enjoyable meal.

We finally got around to trying 3 Foods, and we're glad we did. We liked the atmosphere, cozy and relaxed but elegant in a Spanish-California style. There's definitely an air of rather self-conscious hippie-ish free-spiritedness - 60s classics on the on the sound sysytem (not too loud), menus presented in little photo albums, cutesy pop-culture-referencing names for the various dishes. Service was on the job, firendly but unobtrusive. The limited menu means that they focus on doing a few things well, and the dishes we had were creative, fun, and uniformly good . Portions are moderate - we had four dishes and dessert and walked away feeling satisfied, not stuffed.

The wine list was nothing to crow about, with few local options, which is unusual in Humboldt County (but they did have Redwood Curtain Brewing Company's Belgian pale ale on draft!)

    We shared four dishes: 6 coriander hot wings  (delicious, middle-eastern flavors);  scallop ceviche in a  citrus juice blend, fresh coriander, and habenero, served with commercial corn tortilla chips;
two grass-fed beef sliders with grilled onions, blue cheese, garlic aoli and organic greens; and a delicious morrocan chicken tagine served with grilled pita and couscous, sweet and savory, probably our favorite dish of the meal.

For dessert we shared the "sexy sadie" - chocolate ice cream with warm
caramel and salted almonds - divine.

Four dishes, one dessert, two beers and two glasses of wine set us back about $68 - very reasonable for food of this quality. We look forward to coming back and trying the rest of the menu!

Voted best restaurant in Arcata... really?

2 of my friends had warned me that they did not like 3 foods but we wanted to see for ourselves.

What a huge disappointment this place was. if you like random, awful, sometimes greasy dishes then give it a shot.

I have to mention the seating. The chairs were SO uncomfortable.

The menu itself should have been a warning to me because it was so hard to visualize what sounded good.....

we started with the chickpea appetizer which was wayyyyyy over seasoned. It was really gross.

I chose the Little Prince for my entree. It was a grease soup, straight up. Chicken, couscous and grease. Which was confusing because they did not bring me a spoon so i ate it with my fork.

My partner got the Pearly Whites dish. Two pieces of bland and slightly staled bread came with it. The seafood quality was at the same level as the Oriental Buffet. There was also a greasy soup look to this dish. with random sausage and white beans.

Here's my advice 3 foods.... be more straight forward on your menu, maybe include pictures. Your food is way to abstract (in a bad way) to not be clear to the customers.

Also, find some good dishes and don't worry about the whole 3 food idea, if its delicious, people will be happy.

I love 3 Foods. The waitresses there are always so fun and friendly and really seem to enjoy working there. The atmosphere is great and the food is delicious.

A lot of people complain that it's overpriced but for the quality and quantity of their entrees I think the price is well worth it. I most recently got the Dark and Gruesome and my friend got the wings and we were both completely satisfied with our meals. The cinnamon sriracha sauce was amazing!!!!

The only complaint I would have is that it gets really loud in there when it's busy, and the tables are really close together, but if you go early and miss the rush, you're set.

An authentically Arcata dining experience.  Kinda funky, eclectic, hip, urbane, and cozy all at once. My daughter, who is a HSU student, brings anyone who visits her to 3 Foods Cafe as part of the Arcata experience.

The food is generally good to excellent. A couple of the items are head-scratchers (hmm?) but overall you get well-conceptualized, nicely prepared, tasty food at reasonable prices.

The service is warm and friendly without being overly attentive.

Atmosphere and ambience is quite nice. Interesting place to watch locals.

They have a nice wine selection and good desserts too.

    We've been 4 times.

Menu is vegetarian/vegan friendly and we like this joint.

Mac N' Cheese "veggie style" was off the hook. Cardamom tea is delicious. My partner really liked the sliders. We both love the baked brie appetizer. The chicken with couscous disk was decidedly a no-go. I hear the mu-shu is good.

Main problem is consistency. Sometimes the kitchen seems to have execution trouble. Nonetheless, the ambience is rockin'.

    Make reservations if it's a fri/sat night.
There can be quite a wait.

I love this place and am surprised and confused by the negative reviews. The ambiance is welcoming, comfortable, spot on. The service is always friendly & prompt (which is huge considering the inconsistent service throughout Humboldt), and the food is delightfully creative & tasty. When available, they use produce from their own garden. Very reasonably priced.

With Casa Blanca closed, and Larrupin taking a break for the summer, I was recently at a loss for a restaurant to celebrate a joyous reunion of old friends at our alma mater. Norah suggested we try 3 Foods Cafe, promising hot brie with apricots, and a darned tasty ceviche. I'm so glad we decided to give it a try. After just 1 visit, I have a new favorite restaurant in Arcata, passing up 6 years worth of old college favorites. 3 Foods was WONDERFUL.

Chuck recommended It Hurts So Good, which was a delicious Korean beef with spicy homemade kimchi. By the end of my meal, I understood the name. It was sooo spicy my mouth was on fire but I just couldn't stop eating. Maybe I like the endorphin rush, but I practically licked the spicy red chili paste off the plate. Chuck confessed to ordering this every time she comes. Even though she wants to try the whole menu, she can't get past this one dish. I don't blame her.

I tasted bits of everything else and it was all amazing. The combination of the warm brie with the sweet apricot jam was delicious. The crab beignettes were incredibly indulgent and rich, a big homemade savory doughnut with crab in the middle. We wanted to try dessert but at the end were all too stuffed.

I also definitely appreciate the sense of humor that the owners clearly infuse the restaurant with, from silly walks to the Bill of Rights at the front door. The menu was also wonderfully creative.

I look forward to my next visit to Humboldt just for a chance to stop by Three Foods Cafe again.

To me this place seems a bit new, perhaps I am mistaken. Perhaps it's because they seemed they they needed to get their act together a bit. I'm not saying that the service was bad, in fact it was quite courteous. But it was slow. Maybe things move at a different pace than what I am used to in Arcata.
The menu, however, sounded great, though very heavy on dairy. Their prix fixe option is great and very reasonably priced! And really, the food and beverage was delicious.
Do be warned though, that they grow a lot of their herbs, garnishes, etc. I respect them for that. However, the mint leaf had a teeny caterpillar on it. They should be more thorough before they present, especially because the establishment was not so busy at the time, maybe two other tables were full.

Well, I guess this place is okay.  The two stars are really for the atmosphere, which is not bad, and for my lemonade which was tasty.  I have to agree with some of the other reviewers about the blue cheese thing.  What gives?  Unless you are opening a blue cheese themes restaurant, you shouldn't have blue cheese in every other dish.  Really.  I had crab flautas which seemed like they were heated up in the microwave.  My girlfriend had a chicken tangine, which was waaay too sweet.

The service was also really strange.  Not bad, just... weird.  As if the normal social cues didn't apply, or weren't known.  In Bulgaria, you shake your head no to say yes.  Perhaps it is a similar phenomenon at 3 Foods.  When I signal for the check, perhaps that means stare at me incredulously.  I'm willing to admit that it might just be a cultural difference.  Next time I'll bring a translator.

This is a new, and desperately needed restaurant in Arcata.
Finally people who realize that beauty doesn't have to be expensive, that good service is a necessary component to a healthy restaurant and that  all people really want when they go out to eat is good food, warmth, and generosity.

I love that everything is beautiful.  At times I walk in to this place and it feels like one of the only little warm, sensuous oases in the middle of the cold redwoods.  In fact, the last time, I think I actually started crying with relief.

I also love their creative menu, the fact that reward people for not driving, that they support other local businesses and that the food, although not always completely consistent, is always served with love

I've been here three times and can't give it more than two stars, the food is okay depending on what you order. The service is bad, I've had waiters and waitresses stop waiting my table twice now half way through a meal, leaving me to find someone and ask for a check. It can get extremely loud in the room with their bare walls echoing every sound, and finally their tables only comfortably seat four so if your a party of five the person on the end will have no leg or plate room. I will not go back

I'm not normally into Asian Fusion food, but this place is tops.

This cafe is a breath of fresh air compared to most of the restaurants I've been to lately. The dishes are well-composed flavor-wise and the service well-rehearsed, which you might not expect looking at the average age of the staff.

Yes, take a date here. yes bring your family.

And absolutely order your appetizer with a funny walk (it's on the menu). You won't be disappointed.

Also, all of their dishes are available in two portion sizes which makes incredible sense to me. Everything they served was under-salted, so you can decide how much salt it needs.

3 Foods is most certainly not "Asian Fusion" cuisine (unless Chicken and Waffles is your idea of east-west eclecticism). What it definitely is is DELICIOUS! 3 Foods makes wacky and bold menu choices and they even have strange little names like "The Damn Tasty", "The Hard to Pronounce" and "The Dark and Gruesome".

They also offer reasonable prices with a sliding scale menu: you can order "some" or "more than some". The "some" portions generally run around $10 and are perfect when you get an appetizer too (I highly recommend the "Princess Buttermilk": baked brie with raspberry jam and slivered almonds inside + bread upon which to spread).

Great, heady drink selection....lots of awesome local reds (my fav), microbrews and herbal infused non-alcoholic refreshments. My favorite dish right now is their new Morrocan chicken tagine, which they call "The Little Prince", and I was so glad to see they brought back the tomato soup with a cheddar-potato-chive waffle.

This place has great vibes, romantic lighting, sweet staff, occasional live music (jazz). For $1 you can order a "Silly Walk" (via Monty Python) from your server, which they will perform in front of everyone as they bring your food out to you. Definitely not stuck up or stuffy. Perfect for a date (I like to walk off the food for a half hour or so on the Plaza, then hit up Finnish Country Hot Tubs for a moonlit soak with my honey.), but also wonderful for a night out with the girls (we love to share a Princess Buttermilk and some wine before a concert or movie). Reservations are crucial for normal eating hours on Fri and Sat, but they also stay open later than all other restaurants in Arcata, and you can usually squeeze in just fine after 9 for a late dinner.

This is a restaurant truly in tune with the magical loving vibes of Arcata. (If you get a chance, go ahead and ask them about their name...pretty interesting origin.)

I don't know why it took me so long to try 3 Foods.  My co-workers have long sung its praises.  Finally my wife and I popped in for dinner and I will add this unique restaurant to my dining rotation.

3 Foods seems to be a perfect reflection of Arcata: small, quirky, friendly and cheap.  The small dining room is filled with mismatched tables topped with little stone carvings and a pepper shaker (no salt?).  A dark and imposing redwood wall dominates the room and probably needs something to alleviate its starkness and an open kitchen gives one a view of the preternaturally calm chef preparing the nights fare.

The menu is ridiculously low-priced, leading me to wonder how the business manages to make a profit.  One might expect that they would need to turn the tables over quickly, but I never had a feeling of being rushed through my meal. The service was very personable and a sense of familial warmth pervaded.

As I had eaten a late lunch I only needed a salad and appetizer to satisfy my small hunger.  The salad combined baby lettuce with candied walnuts, bleu cheese crumbles and chunks of apple and was dressed with one of the tastiest dressings (apple cider vinegrette) I've had in ages.

I paired the salad with a dish of hummus, pita bread, cucumbers, olive oil and dry indian spices.  I was a little at a loss as to how to incorporate the dry spices into the dish and it seemed somewhat a wasteful and unnecessary addition to an otherwise tasty appetizer.

Had I been hungrier I'd have been tempted to try their $20 fixed price menu which include an appetizer, entree, dessert and glass of wine (cheap!).  And while I'm sure the kitchen could have accommodated my vegetarian diet, I was a little surprised that none of their half-dozen choices listed included one that was vegetarian.

All in all, 3 Foods is wonderful addition to the Arcata scene.  I'm sure it won't take me so long to return for a second visit.

Had dinner here a week ago with my son while looking for housing for the upcoming school year. The food was delicious, creative and satisfying, the atmosphere was comfortable and relaxing. Although, the service left room for improvement, but we'll be back!

Came on a random whim when it first opened and have been coming back since. The chefs constantly are trying new and original foods (to various degrees of sucess) but I have never had anything that was not tasty there, if a bit odd, waffles with bacon flavored brussel sprouts anyone?

We are so impressed we are having them cater our wedding. Try the Usual Suspects and the #63, with a Light and Lovely salad on the side you wont regret it.

Love the Mu Shu dish, and the Mini-kobe burgers. Also very delicious lavender lemonade, what a great kitchen, staff, and personality. First choice for date restaurants in Arcata.

This is probably the best sit-down dinner experience in Arcata. The prices and portions are perfect. The restaurant is good looking and relaxing and the staff is always nice. Every time I go in there is good soft live music that adds a good feel to the whole experience.

The food is definitely  unique and if you like blue cheese this is your place because they use it in many of their dishes.
Its a great place for a date or a small group of friends(2-4)

Delicious food, awesome people, and fabulous ambiance. Been relying on the take-out lately, and delivery is pretty sweet too (wish i could take advantage more, but they only deliver to arcata). Unique menu, star of david is really good, love the blue cheese nachos, mac n' cheese is a little salty, but still pretty fantastic.

We loved the atmosphere -- kind of sophisticated but cozy, and the customers all wore hoodies and the staff could not have been friendlier.  The menu was fun and unique, and we all loved our meals.   Great wine and beer, too.

The prices are reasonable for the very tasty and unique foods they serve. Every single item on the menu strikes me with curiosity, often rendering me unable on what to settle on for my order. I will say that the appetizers are all delicious and that my favorite main course is star of david. They make their salads large in proportion and with the highest quality ingredients I have ever tasted in a salad.
3 foods cafe just might be the only establishment in Arcata to have such an ambient romantic atmosphere. Its the type of place I bring friends and family who are visiting from out of town so that I can impress them. Dont have much inparticular to say about the staff and service, other than its always been friendly and good.
