best cupcakes in columbus, hands down.... not the best I've had ever, but I've was spoiled for years by Kickass Cupcakes in Somerville, MA.

I actually won a dozen cupcakes from them in a Facebook contest from Freshstreet. I got a half dozen of the sweet potato, which were really subtlety flavored and delicious, especially the frosting which I'm still trying to figure out. The other half dozen were the buckeye cupcakes, which had a whole buckeye candy placed atop, with a not-too-sweet peanut buttery frosting and chocolate cake. The peanut butter frosting was amazing. I'm not normally a frosting person, but I really enjoyed the topping on both of these cupcakes... it wasn't too sweet, it was just fluffy enough, and not overtly greasy (magically?).

The biggest bummer about 3 Babes and a Baker is that they no longer just set up shop on any given day.. you have to order cupcakes in advance, or something like that. Which sucks, because every other cupcake place I've tried in c-bus has been woefully mediocre compared to these guys. Please please please start acting like a regular business again? please?

This is a company that I miss having at the Pearl Alley Market.

I used to get mini sweet potato pies from them every week and other treats.

They even made me a red velvet birthday cake!

I look forward to tracking their truck around Columbus.

    The cupcakes look awesome.

I am a lover of all things cake, being a baker and decorator myself, mostly the later. So when I find a good looking cake that has the taste to match I get giddily excited. 3 Babes and a Baker totally delivers. Ha! Did you see what I did there? They operate out of a truck. Delivers, get it?

    Right. Anyway.

I've had their cupcakes on three different occasions: once at a Yelp event, once at the Independent's Day festival, and once earlier today. They were: strawberry, oreo, and lemon raspberry. The lemon raspberry was by far my favorite, but the others were good and I wish I had more cash on me today because I would have bought more flavors to try. The other flavors I remember seeing were a sweet potato, German chocolate, and chocolate. There may have been other flavors, but I was practically vibrating with excitement and can't remember the rest. I like cake, okay?

Another thing that I love about 3 Babes - they are constantly running promotions and giving away free cupcakes. Sign up to follow them on twitter, immediately, do it. They're on facebook too. The lemon cupcake I won today was because she was giving away free cupcakes to the first five people who tweeted her with "I love cupcakes". So I did, and I won. Then I left work early and drove like a bat out of hell to Columbus to pick up my sweet. Since I'm such a wonderful girlfriend and I knew he would like one, I bought Justin one for later. Once I got back to my car and started in on mine I stared that other take-out box in the passenger seat down for a good thirty seconds, strongly debating whether or not I would give it to him. "You didn't tell you got him one. You could eat it and he'd neeeever know, Tara." I did give it to him though :-(

I can't wait for the next opportunity I have to stop by and get some more. Can I petition for later hours? Or a truck that will come to either New Albany or Campus? Kthanx.

3 Babes & A Baker were at PechaKucha Night on May 12, and I really wanted to fall in love with them. The lady in the truck was so polite and kind that it kills me to say that the cupcake I purchased (green tea) just wasn't that good. It tasted bland and had a weird lemon-tasting jelly swirl on top. Like Jurgen J., I thought that it was too sweet and greasy.

Maybe living in California made me too picky about cupcakes, since it's home to some of the best: Sprinkles (LA), Love At First Bite (Berkeley), and Kara's Cupcakes (San Francisco). I would give 3 Babes & A Baker 5 stars for customer service, but I think they could tweak their recipes a bit to make them better.

I tried 3 Babes & A Baker at the Independents festival. "Just one cupcake", I said. "I'll be good", I said.

I decided to try their festival special, dark chocolate with black licorice, and after getting a grin out of the Chinese takeout style box it came in (THANK YOU for not using cheap styrofoam that can damage the flavor of the cupcake!), I took a bite and was struck by how rich and smooth the frosting was, and how awesomely light and fluffy the cake was beneath it. The cake almost melts in your mouth as you eat it, and after a few seconds of bliss, I found myself heading back to 3B&AB for another cupcake to take home!

They're also running some great promotions to make use of Twitter, facebook, and sites like Columbus Underground - I noticed that they're setting up daily specials on flavors or free cupcakes for their followers or based on customer feedback, and they've been running Ohio State gameday giveaways of a free dozen to anyone who can correctly predict the score!

They've also been partnering with Zapico Foods to start serving Italian food (lasagne and Chicken Marsala) to help make them into a one-stop lunch destination. They seem to be well on the road to success here in Columbus, and I'm glad we have them as a part of the local food truck scene.

The hubs and I are cupcake connoisseurs and we've tried all of the usual suspects:  Bakery Gingham, Piece of Cake, Resch's, etc.  Today we were lucky enough to stumble upon Carla at 3 Babes & A Baker at the Grove City Farmers Market.  Giving it a glance at first and almost walking away, Carla's smiling face said hello and we began chatting it up.  We got a Triple Chocolate Cupcake to split.  We were telling her all about other markets she should consider and bouncing cupcake ideas off of her.  Oh yeah and how cute is it that she gives you your treasure in a chinese take out box!?  For $2 a shot, $.50 to $1 less than other folks in town, you feel like you're not getting taken which also makes you feel good about buying from her.

So we get back to the car and I take the first bite.  Hmm, I wonder if I could trick the hubby into going to the trunk and I could snarf the cupcake down for myself!?!  OH. MY. LORD!  That is THE best cupcake I've ever had.  The thick, rich, decadent chocolate frosting is to die for.  She doesn't skimp either.  It's one of those sink back in your chair moments that all foodies live for.  We WILL be back and our new mission is to sample every flavor!

Finally - it's the cupcake I've been looking for!

I found the Cupcake Truck at Independents' Day, and what a find it turned out to be!  I met one of the babes, and she was a true delight; she was warm, friendly, and totally passionate about cupcakes.  After much internal debate, I finally decided on a red velvet cupcake, and it was perfect. Seriously.  The icing was light, fluffy, and not too sweet, and the cake was moist and flavorful.

And most of all, the Cupcake Truck has tons of heart, and I just want to cheer them on!

I am *loving* the sudden influx of great mobile food options in Columbus, and these guys are at the top of my list.  I've had a few cupcakes from them now, from lemon to oreo to pineapple upside down cake, and they've all been just fantastic.  They are the perfect size, and the cake-to-frosting ratio is excellent.

The best way to find these guys is to follow them on Twitter - they post not only their location each day, but what flavors they'll have, ALONG with all the fun games they'll do that can getcha a free cupcake.

Also - their packaging is perfect for those of us who are hauling a cupcake or two back to the office - they have chinese take-out containers that are just the right size, and the cupcake sits inside with a length of wax paper to further protect it from any jostling it may receive.  It's like a present!

So - check 'em out on Twitter, and get thee a cupcake!!

I feel terrible for not liking 3 Babes. For me, the cupcakes are often too sweet and greasy. Maybe i just came in at a bad day. Everybody else seems to like them a lot.

One of the best new additions to the dessert scene in Columbus.  They always have awesome flavors to choose from.  Being one of their followers on Twitter I was lucky enough to win a cupcake.  On that day I chose the German Chocolate cupcake (I'm a sucker for German Chocolate anything) and it was one of the best cupcakes I've ever had.  Like one of the other reviewer's said, the cake was very light and airy and the icing with all of its coconut goodness was spot on.  The portion size of the cupcakes is just right.  Not so huge that it could be split up by numerous people but not too small either.

If you don't see the truck immediately, look harder.  It's behind of the COTA bus stop and underneath a tree.  I missed it the first time I went by but saw it the second time around.
