Bless you, 2900.
Driving across the southwest (read: Austin to LA) in 40 hours was exhausting, demoralizing and just plain dumb. After spending a week and a half on the go with no good meal during SXSWi, the girls and I decided we were absolutely stopping in El Paso (the only major town we'd be passing through for five hours) for a non-travel center dinner.
It was just the happy little fix we needed.
Three girls from LA proved three girls from LA really do eat - we put down a round of appetizers, a few drinks (expect for the driver), our full entrees and a round of desserts. And the bread basket. Twice.
The calamari and potstickers (our apps) were delicious, our entrees (one girl had steak, the others had fish) were solid and the desserts were divine.
It was REALLY quiet in there. Apparently Wednesday nights aren't the most popular going out night in the area, but we were happy to have a little quiet (plus the fact we made our reservation for an hour later than our arrival time - time zone changes while driving are the WORST).
The waiters were on their toes, and even complimented us in the weirdest way - we were asked if we were gymnasts because "you're so trim and have that headband & leggings on like a gymnast." Interesting observation, sir, but I'll take it.
If you're in the El Paso area and haven't given this place a try, do it. Celebrate something special. Get drinks. Just don't drive from eastern Texas to SoCal to do so...Listed in: I get around

I wanted to take my fiancee out to a nice dinner with drinks, and with all the positive reviews here and a great experience at the Greenery, we figured that 2900 would be a good choice. It also helped that I found a nice gift certificate online that we could use with our meal.
The restaurant looks great: elegant and modern. We were greeted at the door by a very nice hostess and opted to sit upstairs out on the patio. The place has a nice atmosphere and we were looking forward to a nice, romantic evening together. However, things quickly took a turn for the worse.
The first sign of trouble was the fact that we had no waiter, no drinks, absolutely no contact for at least fifteen minutes after we were seated. All the while, the other tables out on the patio had numerous visits from the waitstaff. Frustrated, I went downstairs to let the hostess know about the lack of service. About five minutes later, our waiter finally came over and introduced himself. He soon left to get us water, utensils and the wine menu.
Despite the rocky start, we were still excited about the menu. We decided to order some drinks, a mojito for her and the lychee margarita for me. I wanted to order the Tokyo tea, but they had run out of midori. We also got the crispy calamari to start. Our appetizer came out before we even got our drinks, but we dove in nonetheless. The calamari is tempura fried and has a very airy coating, but excellent seasoning. A very unique take on calamari, not something I would necessarily order again, but worth trying. The drinks, on the other hand, were very disappointing. My lychee margarita had absolutely no lychee flavoring to it and tasted like a cheap margarita I could get at any restaurant. My fiance's mojito was likewise bland with barely any mint.
For our entrees, we ordered the lamb shank and the beef tenderloin. The lamb shank was amazing! It came with wonderful garlic mashed potatoes mixed with baby onions and bacon. For $26, the lamb shank is the way to go. On the other hand, the beef tenderloin was lackluster and more than $10 more than the lamb. Way too salty and I've definitely had better steaks in my life. The potato latkes we got with the steak were also disappointing.
We ended the meal with the mocha-hazelnut torte and an espresso for my fiancee. The espresso was great, but came with these awful salty shortbread cookies. The torte was good, but the layers of sponge cake pale in comparison to the chocolate layers. With the gift certificate we used, 18% gratuity was automatically added to the bill, and though we were not planning to add any more than that, the bill did not even have a spot to add more if we had wanted.
Overall, the most impressive part of the meal were the mint M&M's they had at the hostess desk as we left the restaurant. Such a good idea! Otherwise, for the price, we were not impressed with the service or the food, besides the lamb shank. Not some place we will visit again any time soon. -

El Paso, TX
It's difficult to live in El Paso and find good food that isn't Mexican. 2900 is a giant leap in the right direction, although it (as all places) still has some minor flaws.
The owner of this establishment first opened Greenery in the Sunland Park Mall, and this is basically a more elaborate and upscale version of that restaurant, with a smaller but more refined menu. The seafood is probably the best you're going to find in El Paso, it's not as good as what I've had on more coastal states, but beggers can't be choosers. I think their seabass is probably the highlight of their seafood selections.
2900 has an excellent wine selection, which only a select group of people will find relevant, especially with a gallon of gas approaching what a cheap glass might cost you, we'll see how restaurants like this fair through inflationary times. I enjoy a good red, which they have plenty of, but I don't think my palette is sophisticated enough to tell the difference between a $7/glass and $20/glass wine of any flavor. They make cocktails as well as the best of any bars in El Paso, so those are definitely worth a try.
The decor of the restaurant is very modern, they have waterfalls running down glass all over the place, the walls are etched wood veneer and the furniture is all black wood to match. It's a very unique feel, particularly for this city. A great date atmosphere, because it's fairly quiet inside, but I've also been here with groups of friends and had just as great of a time. I've never been here and seen it be crowded, they have plenty of seating and it just seems like a majority of El Pasoans don't really go for this kind of place. 2900 regularly has local wineries present tastings that the restaurant will pair with dishes, as well as having local jazz bands play occassionally, so consider signing up for their events if you like to attend these types of things.
Service is decent, I've had great service and I've also had sub-par service here as because it's so empty I honestly believe that you get forgotten about depending on where you're sitting, but that also means the good servers will pay more attention to you.
All in all, if you haven't been, I highly recommend a try. It's going to cost a bit more than your average restaurant, but you'll definitely get what you pay for. -

I feel that the food scene leaves something to be desired for a city of El Paso's size but 2900 is a step in the right direction. The server was attentive and knowledgeable, the food was good, the decor was modern and the wine list was practically a chapter book!
Their menu changes monthly, but I had the carne a la plancha, calamari, paella risotto and amaretto creme brulee. All of the dishes were good, my favorites being the carne and creme brulee. I probably wouldn't order the paella risotto again, I was expecting something more like paella than risotto but it was still made well. -

I rarely find anything worth eating in ElP besides Mexican and had heard the mixed reviews of 2900, but stopped in for dinner. Staff was friendly and unobtrusive. Cocktails were fine but nothing to write home about (based on previous reviews this needs some refinement by staff). I ordered the tenderloin which was perfectly prepared and, while a bit expensive, was worth every bite. Dessert was quite frankly unmemorable but tasty. If you want something besides enchiladas, then give them a try. They deserve the business and the chance to truly settle into becoming a great restaurant on the scene.

small expensive portion that were so-so in quality. We both had seafood dishes, my wife's crab encrusted salmon was burnt and the waiter said: 'huh' - and walked away. I have heard the steaks are better choice but not tried. Been there twice and wine prices on bill were higher then on bar menu....We sat at bar the first time and the bartenders are wonderful, when we pointed out the price difference on wine, they quickly changed it..... atmosphere is nice but on cold nights the winds blows threw the front of the rest. when doors are open... And it has been in the 30's! recently!! Have a http://restaurant.com coupon for $25 for 2900 that we will never use , that says it all.

Overpriced and pretentious. Service was great. The general rule of thumb with ELP restaurants, don't order seafood. The goat cheese stuffed peppers were great but overpriced. Good selection of beers but they did not have proper glasses to serve them in. Passable food should not be $10-11 per small plate.

Went for our 2yr anni and had a blast. The restaurant is wonderfully decorated with a ultra-contemporary feel. Staff was knowledgeable and our waiter was exceptional. Appetizers were good (not spectacular), but our entrees were awesome. I had the 14 oz ribeye and it was delicious...perfectly cooked/seasoned. Mixed drinks were not watered down and were decently priced for the tall glasses they came in. Prices were a bit expensive, but not ridiculously so.
Will visit again! -

Can never understand why 2900 isn't more popular. It's true that 2900 stumbled when it came out of the blocks, misjudging the demand for haute cuisine when it first opened. Bad timing didn't help either. Delays in opening put 2900's debut right at the worst economic recession of our time, and people were cutting back. 2900 adjusted the menu to address the conditions as they then existed. The current menu is accessible, is priced right, and has something for everyone. The bar is cool and there is a limited, lower-cost menu there that more people need to know about. Lunches are priced right and I really enjoy the burger and wine lunch special. It's no ordinary burger--far better than average. There is some service inconsistency that precludes 5 stars.

I had lunch at 2900 the other day. I love the modern décor. When you walk in, you feel like you're in a restaurant in New York City. The waterfall in the middle of the restaurant is very soothing and doesn't make noise as it falls.
The menu isn't extensive for lunch and is somewhat limited. I opted for the grilled salmon with roasted potatoes. When I received the salmon, it was cooked just right but it lacked in favor. It was simple nothing special. It was also served with the skin side up. Why would you serve fish with the skin side up? Secondly the stacking of food for presentation is getting very old and lacking in creativity. Why not try something new? The food was not any better or any worse than you would experience at any other average restaurant. They charged $16 for a dish and that did not include the soup that was extra. For an establishment like 2900 I expect more. The service was average at best and I had to flag down the waiter to get my bill.
Hint: Save your money and eat The Greenery, same owner better food and cheaper prices. -

Wonderful ambient..excellent service n out of this world food. The tapa of calamari was big enough for 2~4 people to share. The steaks were cooked perfectly. Black bean soup was excellent. Highly recommend it.

Worth the price. 2900 is a breath of fresh air in El Paso. Gourmet food with fresh ingredients and artistic presentations. The goat cheese gnocchi was divine. We are big fans of the Greenery, and Mark Heins does not disappoint with this high end incarnation of his vision.

3 stars for the food.. 5 stars for the drinks
i came for drinks and appetizers on a thursday night.. although it was a little bit quiet for a "hot" el paso restaurant.. the decor is modern.. but they could improve the atmosphere by dimming the lights..
we sat at the bar.. although they are known for their extensive wine menu.. i ordered a couple drinks of single malt scotch.. my fiancee had a ginger lemon drop martini which she thought was quite good
as for the food.. we shared a plate of calamari and a seared tuna salad..
the fried calamari was soggy.. maybe it was single fried.. but it was pretty disappointing... the seared tuna salad was ok.. the slices of tuna were quite slim.. and the sauce it came with was disgustingly overpowering
overall.. i'd give them another chance for dinner (the cod looks promising).. but from what i've had for food.. i'm truly disappointed.. -

After searching for a restaurant that resembles what you would find in SF or Seattle I located 2900. I decided to take a leap of faith and try some "fine dining" in the Borderland region. I was enticed to try this restaurant do to its changing monthly menu and focus on fresh ingredients. My wife and I were excited by their endless, so it seemed, wine menu (I believe it was 24 pages long) and specialty cocktail list. We ordered our drinks and glanced at the menu. We decided to split a few small plates and then share a main dish since we were eating at 8:30pm. We ordered the grilled flatbread and carne a la plancha. Both were prepared well and were tasty. We then shared the paella risotto. It wasn't traditional paella, but it hit the spot. Overall our experience was great. We loved the industrial look of a split restaurant / lounge and you could look into the kitchen to watch the chefs prepare the meals. It was a nice place to eat and it was worth spending a few extra dollars. (Main dishes b/w $17-35 and small dishes b/w $8-13).

All I can say is, "Wow." Fantastic food, here. Really delicious, and good portions. Great atmosphere, too. No complaints about the waiters and staff -- all good. I'm only taking the time to post this review because I think El Pasoans on the east side should know about 2900. It's definitely worth the drive. This place stacks up against any top level Los Angeles or New York restaurant. I'll be back, and soon, I hope!

El Paso, TX
Nice ambiance at the bar. The dining experience was less than impressive with the sea food entrees leaving a lot to be desired. My crab encrusted Mahi Mahi was tasteless and served on top of a fried leek patty covered with bland marinara sauce. It reminded me of a "want to be" high end fried mozzarella cheese stick with its sauce. These flavors did not complement each other, and when spending $20+ entree, was disappointing.
