Review from Jamie R.
Naples, FL
This is a roadside honky tonk that happens to be open for breakfast and lunch. A huge, hand-painted banner announcing "Breakfast" below the "Robin's 290 W Bar & Grill" sign pulled me in from the highway about 9 AM. Several locals were at the bar, variously reading an Austin paper as well as a menu. All of them knew Sarah by name; Sarah stayed behind the bar and in good communication with the kitchen. Another staffer came in and turned on about a half dozen fans that probably made it as fresh as it could get between the Friday and Saturday bar nights..
Since no one was smoking, and only one patron was already drinking beer, I figured it was worth staying. The old dark wood inside had obviously seen a lot of boots, and another sign that read "Spit in the Air/Blood on the Floor" gave me a good idea of what it might be like at 10PM instead of 10AM around these pool tables.
I ordered the breakfast "taco" which was an enticingly soft flour tortilla filled with egg, bacon, & cheese. Delicious, y'all. The breakfast menu offers a taco with two fillings for a buck and a half, then lists "other stuff" that you can add for 50 cents an item. A thick ceramic cup of coffee was a dollar, so my bill was all of $4.33 -

Ummm, it's a different crowd. They allow smoking inside, which is ok for some but I prefer not to smell like an ashtray.
I gave this place a couple of tries with mixed results. This place is full of regulars, and they seem to be the hardcore drinkers. Down to Earth drunk people is how I would sum it up.

Review from Tania M.
Buda, TX
We have been asked by many friends to come to 290 West over the past year, but this happened to be the first time we had been able to make the long trek from Buda. The bartender, John, was extremely rude from the moment we ordered. We had 2 drinks apiece, but they were $4.50 each. That may have been worth it if the service wasn't so awful. We figured we would be leaving soon so we ordered a can of diet coke, which we shared. At this point we were asked to stay a little longer so we then ordered another can of diet coke. The tab came to $27 and because we were frustrated at having to ask him to close the tab 4 times (no they were not busy, he blatantly ignored the request), we didn't catch what he'd done. We knew it seemed steep and even griped to James (The KJ who called and asked us to come this particular day) as we left, that they sure over price a can of diet coke. Then on the way home we thought well hell if they charged $4.50 for a diet coke, the liquor must be free! Calling manager tomorrow and recommending to all of my friends, do not EVER go to 290 West Bar! I am satisfied with our choice NOT to leave a tip, and we always tip! I am reasonably sure they may have violated some form of TABC law by padding the tab, I would be curious to know for sure. If you go, keep an eye on the bartender, sneaky! If it weren't for the KJ and the great sound, they wouldn't have gotten the one star I gave them. It's too bad that someones first experience of a place should be so bad. You would think it benefits an establishment to make a good impression on new patrons, not just the regulars. You never know who your new regulars could have been or the power of their network of friends.
