On an exceptionally (and rare) clear day in August 2010, mom and I went on the 26 Glacier Cruise.  They're always advertising on the radio, so I thought it might be a bit cheesy, but it was the perfect way to show mom some of Alaska's great environment.  The drive to Whittier is interesting since you cut through mountainside in the Anton Anderson Tunnel, a one-lane tunnel shared by vehicles and trains (not at the same time of course!)

Whittier is a very small community, so it was easy to find parking and the cruise terminal.  The tour was about 3 hours long I think, and the tour guides were informative and friendly.  You'll cruise through the Esther Passage past a sea lion rookery, up to the opening of College Fjord, and back through Harriman Fjord.  The spectacular tidewater glaciers are in Harriman, so they saved the best for last.

Considering all that we saw, and the lunch was pretty good, it was worth $139 pp.  The boat felt a little crowded, but you were able to stand and walk around to take plenty of photos.

Can't go to AK without a glacier cruise, right? This goes on the to do list!

Edited 7/26: Booked our cruise and train ride today! Friendly, helpful people so far! Only a few more weeks 'til we launch!

8/21/10: What a fantastic experience! There was a Forest Service employee on board to explain all about the natural resources of the area, glacier formation, etc. It was very educational and absolutely  ... well, how many times can I say "Amazing" in a review? It's like so much of Alaska - absolutely indescribable!

The boat is fantastic: the catamaran style was rock-solid and had less sway than a lot of the big cruise ships I've been on in the past. Crew is friendly, food was good. There's a bar downstairs with snacks of you get hungry.
Definitely recommend that you climb aboard and see the glaciers for yourself - amazing!!
We took the train to Whittier. It was mighty slow getting back to Anchorage but very comfortable with great scenery.

Seeing as how glaciers rank pretty high in the list of things-that-could-meltaway-in a-few- years, we had to totally do one of the glacier tours Alaska has to offer. The boat leaves from Whittier, a tiny harbor town about an hour from Anchorage.
The catamaran was one of the smoothest boat rides I've ever been on. The Alaskan waters are mild and the boat is so stable, I hardly felt the cruising speed. Lunch is served on the boat and snacks and drinks are sold at the bar.  Food was just meh, but I was here for the glacier tour.
Loved the wildlife throughout...the glacier-viewing was bitter sweet. You know you're approaching a glacier when you see all the melted ice. There was a ranger onboard to answer questions and spot wildlife.

A quick note about driving into Whittier - There's a tunnel that's shared with the Alaska train, so its open to cars/buses only during select times.

I took this cruise a couple days ago out of Whittier. It was definitely money well spent. I thought it could be a bit shorter...my attention span was out probably by glacier 10, but I kept on. The snack is more of a meal, so don't eat first. The crew was great. I would definitely put this on my list of things to do while in Alaska.

The cruise is worth the money you pay. The boat is large and stable and they go at a good pace where you can go outside and watch wildlife or glaciers. We didn't see a lot of wildlife other than otters. Only bad thing is that fish lunch was small but tasty.  Bring your own snacks as food on board is pricey.

Definitely worthwhile and different from the Kenai Fjords, but if you must chose, do the latter first. We didn't book at the office pictured Anchorage. We booked on the phone and drove ourselves out to Whittier. If you drive yourself, you must allow plenty of lee time for the traffic control on the one way at a time tunnel.
