Well, if you like greasy spoons like I do, you'll like this place.

The chicken fried steak was good. Had a nice flavor. The flavorful and tasty breading on mine was uncooked though (I wish I could have eaten it). My husband's was done through.

My son loved his blueberry pancakes and my daughter loved her french toast.

CROWDED! We only got to eat quickly because there happened to be enough seats at the bar.

HUGE sweet rolls. I'd have liked to try one. They looked delish.

    Pan-cooked fries were tasty.

Staff was super friendly and helpful.

    I would definitely return.

I've always passed by this place on my way to and from work, but didn't consider going until my roommate mentioned it today. and so glad we did!

The diner on the outside is nothing impressive, but its very quaint, homey, and cozy. There are booths all around and a diner-y bar in the middle of the restaurant. We arrived a little after 1pm on a saturday and the place was pretty packed! Luckily, there was a small table for 2 out on the patio (still inside tho). Service was prompt and friendly.

I got the San Francisco Joe's Scrambler or something like that with hash browns and biscuit+gravy. The Scrambler had ground beef, lots and lots of spinach, mushrooms, and cheese, and it was delicious! I liked that it was not too heavy, and the spinach was still very fresh, and the entire scramble was very moist. The hash browns were a perfect crisp on the top and moist on the inside. And my oh my, their biscuit!! was huge, moist, warm, crumbly, and delicious with the thick gravy with chunks of bacon or sausage or something! Their coffee was pretty good too, with prompt refills.

My friend got the Turkey, Avocado, and tomato omelette, which she enjoyed. I tasted it and got a huuuge chunk of avocado, yum!

They also have bloody marys, mimosas, and beer!

I definitely want to go back to try some of their sandwiches (and bloody marys) The price range was good (no more than $8-9 for an omelette or breakfast dish) Coffees were $2.50 each.

All in all, a great experience for some comforting, hearty, warm, delicious brunch food. :)

We discovered this adorable little diner while geocaching (if you don't know what that is you're TOTALLY missing out on some good geeky fun) but unfortunately for us it was closed that day.  We finally went back yesterday and not only found what we were looking for, but had a fabulous brunch too!

I ordered the Mediterranean omelet with pan fried potatoes and my brother ordered the pan fried trout.  We both had the biscuits and gravy that we'd read so much about in the other reviews and let me tell you we were glad we did.  The biscuits (2) were huge, fluffy, and taste as if they were fresh out of the oven.  The gravy was just the perfect consistency and they gave us plenty to go with both biscuits.  I HATE it when you run out of gravy before you fun out of biscuit, and I'm pretty liberal with my application of gravy.  :)

They make their omelets a little different here.  The eggs are light and airy and doubled over, but the filling is on top instead of in the middle.  Yes, I know that this technically makes them toppings and not fillings.  Details, shmetails. My omelet was covered with thickly sliced artichoke hearts, kalamata olives, crumbled feta and halved grape/cherry tomatoes. MMMMMMM  MMMMMMM good!

I tried some of my brother's trout and it was fabulous, too!  The fish was flaky and not over or undercooked or overly fishy in taste. It was lightly breaded with something with a little crunch to it - possibly cornmeal?

I had orange juice which tasted fairly fresh and my brother enjoyed his hot chocolate which arrived with a beautiful mound of glistening whipped cream crowning it.  The wait to get in was pretty short, though it was a weekday, and the service was good!

A cool little 50's diner, totally recommended by several locals to come here for breakfast.

I ordered the "San Francisco Joe's special", which I will pretty much order anywhere, anytime.  It was very good, but not the total best.  The coffee was excellent, brought in from a Santa Barbara roaster, and I loved each of the homemade jams at the table (today, strawberry, and orange marmelade).  I think if you truly want something delicious here, order the pancakes or waffles.  They also have things like fresh talapia and eggs, if that's your thing!

Lunch and dinner is also served here.  I found it hilarious that a diner such as this featured 2 specials for November, a pasta and a dessert featured in "Food and Wine" magazine.

Celine, server, was totally cool and a delight.

This is one of my absolute favorite places to eat at for breakfast or lunch.  The menu is very diverse, and the portions are just right.  The waitresses  are very friendly and always make sure that my coffee cup is filled and that all of my desires are met.  I come here frequently with my family after church, and though the wait can be long, it's definitely worth it.  Plus there is a trio who performs country classics just outside the door.
If you ever stop by 24th, I suggest you try their pumpkin pancakes with pecan butter.. so delicious!  And while you're at it, ask for a table in the patio section and a mimosa to go with your pancakes.

I'm so disappointed with this place. I have been here a handful of times and have always left happy but after today's experience I can't see myself coming back anytime soon. I will say in their defense they were very busy. Unfortunately that doesn't excuse the unfriendly and quite bitchy service from not just the waitress but the management.

The food was definitely below average this go around as well. We also waited about an hour for it. The table next to us was complaining as they waited 45 minutes for a salad and a sandwich, that's right, a salad and a sandwich. That is wildly unacceptable in my book. Then the manager said that it always takes at least 35 minutes for your order to come out after it's taken. Not an apology for it taking so long but an excuse (and a bullshit one at that). Every other time I've been here it's taken about 15-20 max.

I ordered the Halibut Omelet. The flavor was good but the halibut was fishy. My friend got the tri-tip scramble that was supposed to come with peppers and onions mixed throughout. It had no peppers and onions anywhere on the plate. He pointed it out to the waitress who swore up and down that they were in there. Not an apology and I'll take care of that but telling him he's wrong. He's eating it, I'm sure he knows something is missing. My girlfriend got the country fried steak which was tasty but the breading was soggy. The waitress also seemed to have a hard time keeping our coffee cup full which never has ever been a problem at any diner I've ever been to.

Also when we went to the counter to pay our bill the manager never even acknowledged our presence more than taking my card and ticket. I said thank you after he handed me my receipt and I got no response back. Not a thanks for coming or a thank you for your business. Great way to end our meal at 24th Street Cafe.

I've been to this place multiple times in the past year and have enjoyed most of my meals when I was seated at the counter by myself. The waitresses typically interacted with me, kept my drinks filled, and were a joy to chat with. When I've visited on weekends, typically with friends, it's been more miss than hit. The waitresses forgot our drink orders on two occasions and food that we ordered didn't show up at all, while some foods that we didn't order did show up at our table. I took my girlfriend's parents to this place and was embarrassed that I had chosen it by the end. I should have known a Saturday morning was a bad day to go, but I tried anyway. I'm not with that girlfriend any more and I am not blaming this restaurant, but it really didn't help any at all, since I had suggested it.

They do make great meals. They have hard-working, very nice waitresses. If you go when it's not so busy, it's usually a great experience. If it looks too busy, I'd go somewhere else.

I've had both lunch and breakfast here and each meal I had on my own was GREAT! So, I'd be willing to give them another chance.

A cute little diner in Bakersfield with the american breakfast classics. I've always enjoyed what I  have ordered here.  But the must have here are the:  Pumpkin Pancakes! with Pecan Butter! Let me first say... I am not a pancake kind of girl... I prefer waffles or french toast, but I am sooooooo glad I ordered the pumpkin pancakes here.  They were amazing on all tasty levels.  Hints of cinnamon, pumpkin, vanilla, and crunchy pecans.  Super yummy! 24th Cafe is a must stop if you haven't been, but make sure you order the pumpkin pancakes at least once!

Haven't been here in almost 10 years! I had forgotten how delicious this place was. I was so shocked by how great the prices were for the amount of food we got. I usually go here if I'm up early enough for an early breakfast. Been coming here for years, and I don't think I can ever stop. I love how the waitresses who know me bring me my apple juice before my coffee.

Their food tastes great and are very generous with the portions. I highly recommend their Chicken Fried Chicken. It tastes very much like Chicken/Country Fried Steak, but it's not as heavy and greasy. The lean chicken breast with the thick gravy creates a nice balance. Finish your meal with eggs, potatoes, and biscuits & gravy and you're good to go for the day (after a quick nap).

The parking can be a pain during peak hours. Be cautious if you decide to park on the other side of 24th St, as the restaurant is a mere quarter-mile away from the end of Hwy 178, and some people tend to maintain their freeway speed.

Also, when they're not busy, don't bother waiting at the entrance. Just find an empty seat or table and one of the waitresses will be with you within minutes.

This place I would call good, but not great. My husband and I had great service- waitress was nice and prompt.  Our food came out a bit slow for what it was:  Tuna melt with a fruit cup and a Turkey dip with macaroni salad.  Beware for those who hate pickles- there were pickles in both the macaroni salad and in the tuna salad on the melt chopped right in- that was kinda a minus for me becase I am pretty particular about what kind of pickles I liked.

One of the really good things is that the guy working the griddle knows how to do a sandwich right and my sourdough was perfectly seared- and th bread was really good on that.  The bread on the Turkey dip was only so so- one of those frozen chibatta rolls- they needed to toast it for more flavor and to take out the freezer taste.

For the price of 20$ and then we tipped 5 $ it was ok- for 20$ and 10$ a sandwich I expect more.  I had iced tea, my husband had water.

Nothing else on the menu really looked exceptional- kinda ho hum faire.

We came here on a Sunday morning on our way through Bakersfield after a friend's wedding.  We wanted to try Moo Creamery but they were closed that morning so we got a good recommendation for this place.
The line was pretty long to get in, but it was totally worth the wait when we did.  It's a cute brunch place to go to with friends.  You can grab a booth or eat at the diner.
They have really great breakfast omelettes and also delicious steak sandwiches.

My friends and I made our annual camping trip to the Kern River and stumbled upon this spot for breakfast one morning...This place HIT THE SPOT!!!

Not only was the menu diverse and very healthy (ahi tuna and eggs to homestyle country fried steak) but they served mimosas, screw drivers and bloody mary's too!  And our server must have seen me and knew I needed a stiff drink 'cause the screw driver she poured hit the spot!!!  This place was the best breakfast in Bakersfield!

The service was FANTASTIC!  Everyone was nice!  Our server was great!

If you're in the beautiful metropolis of Bakersfield visit this spot and you won't be disappointed!

The food is delicious and the atmosphere is good. It seems to be one of those places filled with customers who come very regularly. Often, they would know the waitresses by name.

I took off a star because I'm not a fan of their pancakes or waffles. They don't taste good. I think ihop or denny's is better. But their meats, sandwiches, omelets, eggs, pan fries, salsa...yum!

Edited: I took off another star because lately this place has been making me sick. Their utensils are dirtier (some have pieces of dried food or spashes of soap residue) and food is sometimes overcooked...last time the halibut was so dry and rubbery. I don't know what changed.

Edit 2: I gave a star back because I'm no longer getting sick after eating their food. Yum.

Awesome place.  Being from NYC, I'm a huge fan of REAL diners.  I really like this place.  I like how they give free coffee for waiting, I like the lovely guitar players that serenade you while you wait, I like the friendliness of the staff and management, and I especially like the food.

The chile verde is slow cooked to perfection, the shrimp chilaquiles are great, the biscuits and gravy is as good as any I've had in my adopted  homestate of Texas, the bacon is crispy, and the pancakes are incredible.

The only downside are their omelettes.  I usually get their spinach omelette with tomato and feta cheese.  What I dont like about it is that what is on the plate is a handful of spinach, tomato, and feta, with a well-done scrambled egg literally on top; it's almost like I ordered a deconstructed omelette... it just wasn't right.

Overall, this is a good, solid, honest diner with great food, great staff, and great ambiance.

I'm having a really hard time deciding what to say and how many stars to give due to their lack of consistency. I've been coming here off and on for years and it's always hit or miss. One day I'll have a fantastic breakfast with really amazing plain black coffee (I know, amazing plain black coffee, but it's really good) and on my next visit the pancakes will be terrible and the coffee stale.

Also, for the love of God stay away from the Sandwiches. My friend had a french dip and it was the most disgusting and oddest tasting thing I've ever consumed. That was the straw that broke the camel's back and I have not returned since. I may return in the future, but for now I'm staying clear of the 24th Street Cafe.

Overrated...   what's with all the hype?  The food's not THAT great.  A little better than Denny's (which is still somewhat poor) but a lot more expensive than Denny's for what you get.

I have heard friends rave about this place, and finally let a friend take me.  I am not usually in the mood for breakfast so I usually say "No thanks" when someone offers to take me there.
The wait for a table was too long, the service wasn't that great, the prices were a little high for what you get and the quality of the food was just okay.

I don't know why everyone thinks this place is so great.  From the reviews here I see a lot of people agree with my friends, but I have to disagree...   I am somewhat disappointed with the overall experience.

I just went by 24th street for a late breakfast today and everything was great. The service was quick like always, the coffee was tasted good and was fresh.
The food itself was perfect. I had the Linguica Omelet and it was honestly one of the best breakfast dishes I've had. It was served with a light cream sauce that worked much better than I thought it would. I am definitely coming back again for this omelet again.

The place looks nice..but the food is nothing to write home about. Definitely overpriced for the quality. My steak was very dry, and my mother's omelet was not satisfactory. I had high hopes for this place but was let down. Hopefully they were just having an 'off' day. For a much better experience, I would recommend the cafe at the downtown bowling alley.

I come here at least once every business trip into town.  I have yet to be dissapointed.  The food is always fantastic, the service is always with a smile and a full cup of coffee.  The only drawback ever in here is the huge crowds you'll run into on weekend mornings. You should try to avoid a table towards the front with everyone standing around there.

My personal favorites are the chicken fried steak breakfast and the tri-tip scramble.

Okay, here goes. I looked this place up on Yelp a few months ago to plan a road trip down to Las Vegas and wanted to have this as a stop over. It was a car-related event so I came down with 5 lowered modified cars that were definitely unfriendly around this part of town (i.e. high curbs, street parking, no lots, etc.). This place opened at 5 am which was what I wanted but we didn't end up here until around 6 am.

There were two waitresses but we were confused as to where they wanted us to sit because we came in and looked around and sat down since no one pointed to anything, and then one of the waitresses said we had to move tables because she wouldn't squeeze 5 people into a 4 person booth. My friend (odd person out) then said he was planning to nap in the car for a bit and just wanted a quick bite so he sat at the adjacent booth to ours.

Our waitress was NOT happy about this ... she said, "I don't serve that side" and told him that he had to get served by the other waitress on duty. We were really confused by this and she was highly offended that we asked her if she could just serve our one friend, at 6 am in the morning, when there were 2 other people at the bar area of the diner. She said no and would not come back to take our orders until 20 min later.

We were on a time crunch so we ordered, wolfed down our food, and left. She did not come by once to ask us how we were doing or if we needed anything extra. I really don't think we were asking of something terrible in that situation so I don't understand why the service was so snappy and bad.

Food wise this is a good place for breakfast but it's nothing fantastically great that I would endure the poor service for.

We stopped here on our way to Death valley after I asked a local where he likes to eat. It's very clean, great-friendly service and fun things to look at all over the walls. My kids even thought it was cool.
Our food was excellent and the price was decent. I had the Huevos Rancheros and I think it was the best I've ever had. My husband had the veggie omelet with eggbeater, it was packed full of fresh veggies and tons of spinach. Both of the boys had hamburgers and they gave them a 9 out of 10.
    Huge menu to choose from.

If ever in Bakersfield, I would defiantly go back here.

I LOVE this place. I have gone several times since moving to Bakersfield from the LA area, and I have never been disappointed. I especially love the creativity of the menu. 24th Street Cafe has staples, like omelettes and French toast (the omelettes are amazing), but they also have specials, like a pear and chorizo panini (yum). This place is certainly something special--a true gem. It's usually busy, but it's always worth the wait, and the staff are always really efficient but nice.

Decided to take my parents here for breakfast/brunch based on reviews I read on Yelp. This is probably the first time that yelpers have disappointed me.

I ordered the Persimmon Pancakes in the hopes that I would experience something light and a little sweet on the Friday after Christmas. Huge disappointment. The pancakes were limp on my plate and when I cut into them I found they seemed under cooked. They tasted a little better than they looked but were still soggy. Probably my own fault for ordering something unique on the menu.

Anyway, my mom had a Mushroom and Spinach Omelette that she raved about and my Dad had a hamburger steak and eggs that he said was pretty good (and when he says that it means it was pretty damn good). So if I do come here again I'll definitely order something more standard.

Also I noticed a lot of people were having Bloody Marys, Mimosas, and Bailey's n Cream, which makes me think that this a place where you go to recover from the night before. That's always a bad sign for a restaurant for me. I don't trust the palates of heavy drinkers.

Excellent all the way around.  The food was superb; excellent breakfast!  The service was prompt as well.  Their coffee wasn't as strong as I'm used to, but it was good nonetheless.  The owner (I think?) was extremely accommodating to my family and we will never forget that.  I'm not in Bakersfield much, but when I return, I'll be going to The 24th Street Cafe again.

Unbelievably good breakfast.  As a connoisseur of biscuits and gravy, I can easily give this place 5 stars on the quality of that dish alone.  The fact that the biscuits and gravy are INCLUDED as a toast side with any breakfast just about blew my mind!  The rest of my breakfast was tasty as well, including the scrumptious pan-fried potatoes.  I really like their menu--a nice mix of traditional combos with more innovative fare.  My meal was simply wonderful.

The retro diner atmosphere is very cool, and if I hadn't been with a group of friends I would have been tempted to sit at the old-style wrap-around counter.  Our server was fantastic--the coffee cups were never empty.  Although you do have to wait quite a while to get a seat, they do get your food out to you quickly, so that kind of makes up for it.

Definitely a business that completely deserves its plethora of 5 star ratings!

I had a scramble with prosciutto, sundried tomatoes, and melted Gruyere with a bowl of mixed fruit.  The bowl of fruit was fresh and a sizable portion.  The scramble had room for improvement.  I felt that the eggs were overscrambled and/or they did not use enough, since the eggs were browned and dry and didn't hold together at all.  They were generous with the prosciutto, but it somewhat overpowered the dish with saltiness.

To drink, my friend and I ordered their pomegranate mimosa.  The server, though friendly as she may have been, prioritized singing while opening the mini bottles of champagne over serving the mimosas.  The little glasses that the pomegranate juice (straight from the bottle, nothing special) came in were not the type that poured cleanly, so we made a bloody pomegranate-y mess of the table.

I wasn't entirely impressed with what I had that day, but they have a pretty extensive menu, so perhaps I just didn't order the right thing.  Their cinnamon roll French toast (or just cinnamon roll by itself) looked like a winner, and next time, I'll just stick to water and coffee.

I have discovered this cafe using yelp, and I'm so glad I did! My daughter and I have been there a couple of times and I just returned home from having lunch there with my husband. Thus far, I have not been disappointed. The omelettes daughter and I just tried were very good, the halibut one and the seafood one. Hubby ate the fish and chips and decided he liked it pretty well. . The reuben was excellent! Although the waitress forgot the salad for my Hubby's meal, the service was familiar and friendly.  I will be definitely returning soon!

This place really set me up and then knocked me down.  We went on a Sunday but got there early enough so that there wasn't a line.  There was a group playing guitars on the sidewalk outside, which I thought was a nice touch.  We got a very friendly greeting, and got our menus almost immediately.  And what a menu - so many breakfast choices.  The waitress was sharp enough to know that she needed to warn my wife about the cream cheese in the french toast.  So far so good...

And then the food came.  The strawberries on top of my wife's french toast were definitely not fresh - they were the kind that come frozen in syrup.  And the french toast itself wasn't that great.  My son's spinach and feta omelette was OK (fresh spinach but some of the pieces looked dicey).  My pancakes with fresh blueberries and blackberries weren't very big, I only got two of them, and they weren't very tasty.  So a huge disappointment food-wise, especially since the place seemed so well run.  Maybe we came on a bad day?

A really amazing breakfast diner in the heart of Bakersfield.  Some people scoff at this place as being too overrated - including some of my own family, but they're just as well at an average chain restuarant.

I like this place for many reasons including:
    * Innovative yet Bakersfield-authentic menu items (think chorizo omelet, pan fried trout and eggs, chicken fried steak, scrambles with various seafood and brie, and cinnamon rolls to die for)
    * Higher-quality presentation without being too stuffy (down-home goodness and a little more expensive than the chains, but worth it)
    * Sense of character and great service (this place oozes local character, and every host and server has also been super friendly)

    Only minuses would be:
    * The weekend wait (sometimes betw. 30 min - 1 hour).  Try to come on a weekday if you can.
    * Cramped waiting area (which leads you to wait outside on the sidewalk next to all the 24th and Chester exhaust fumes)

All in all -- a little more hassle, a dollar or two more, but def. worth it.  Have not eaten lunch here, but they are open until 2 PM.

Tried this place because it is always packed when we drive by in the morning. It's known for its breakfast and the fact that the cast from Star Trek the movie ate here once.

I ordered the Denver omelet and had the biscuits and gravy on the side. The omelet was cooked nicely. The portion was just right and it totally filled me up. Truthfully thought, it didn't taste any different from something I could get at Denny's or Carrow's. The only thing that really stood out was the biscuits and gravy. The biscuits were huge and super soft, like they came right out of the oven. The gravy was yummy and reminded me of Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles gravy, only with less flavor. I would just order that biscuits and gravy alone next time.

My fiance order a simple breakfast combination. Nothing special, nothing different. The prices were way more expensive than dennys and the place was really small. The waitresses are really busy so you have to catch them when they come by.

Tried it once, probably won't try it again.
