I first walked into this place right after it opened. It was so convenient, 2 blocks from my house right next to Nijiya, that I decided to give it a try. I had different people for the first couple of cuts and they were OK. Decent haircuts at a great price. Then I got Tammy.
What a lucky break for me. She not only gives a great haircut (and shampoo afterward so all those little cut hairs don't go down your shirt all day), she is also just a great person to spend half an hour with. She always remembers my name and asks about my kids and anything else we had talked about before. I always leave happy, relaxed, looking much better and feeling like I got a bargain. -

I would give them 5 stars for their waxing service but NOT TODAY!
I went in and this old Asian lady waxed my eyebrows. She kind of made me nervous in the beginning because she was moving so slow like she has never done it before. While she was cutting the waxing strips near my head she accidentally chopped a small chunk of my hair. OMG. She heard my stomach growling and I think she felt I was really tensed because she asked, "Are you chicken?" LOL. I don't know if I misunderstood her heavy accent but she repeated it three times. I said, "No, I'm just really nervous." The wax was so hot when she put it on my skin that my eyelid had a red burned mark. I should've told her to stop right there but I decided to just stick with it and hope my eyebrows would look magical when she finished. At least she was very apologetic, especially while she was plucking my eyebrows.
Anyway, my eyebrows turned okay (except the burned mark on my eyelid) and it was such a relief! I thought $16 was kind of expensive for the torture I just went through. Oh well, NO TIP FOR YOU, LADY! Will I come here again? Probably. It's so close to my place. So convenient. They're so nice, I'll give them a chance to get a 5 star again.1 Previous Review: Show all »

I didn't have a very good experience here, though everyone was very nice.
I got a hair cut, color, manicure, and pedicure. The hair cut was passable, though a little plain and quick for the price. The manicure was really bad. She didn't take all my old nail polish off, then really cut underneath one of my nails, which later got infected. She did the same thing on one of my toes.
The worst was the color. My hair turned out fairly orange (it's dark brown) which I'd specifically asked to avoid. They also didn't mix enough color in the first batch, and had to mix two more batches. My hair turned out three noticeably different colors. I've been getting negative comments on it, and have an appointment somewhere else to get it fixed.
I went back after a week to express my dissatisfaction. They refunded $55 of the original $150 that I paid. I wasn't satisfied with that, but didn't know what other recourse I wanted to take.
I wouldn't recommend this salon to anyone for any service. As nice as they were, they didn't seem to know what they were doing. -

Our soju-induced stuper convinced my roommate and I that getting a mani-pedi was a good idea after eating at Omagari. Instead we ended up questioning why we didn't just wait till the following morning, and go to a place we were more familiar with.
I guess we should be grateful that they accommodated us as walk-ins, but we were shuffled into a small back room without much explanation. The area you get your manicure and pedicures is really really small. The furniture is outdated and the selection of OPI colors isn't as great as I would have liked. Although I had picked out my pedicure color, the lady working with me insisted I get a french pedicure because it lasts longer (even though I said 'no, i'd like regular color' twice). Then when it came to getting my manicure, I had to be pretty harsh in order to get her to actually paint my nails the color I wanted (she had actually placed the color I picked out back on the shelf). They also use actual portable fans to dry your nails, so it gets really chilly fast. The final straw was when halfway through finishing my manicure, she commented on how hairy my eyebrows were, and when I kept telling her I was growing them out, she commented again on how I should wax them. I know she was probably trying to offer a waxing service as well, but holy god, I know my eyebrows look terrible, I don't need reminding.
I won't be back, and I've learned my lesson to wait for what I need, not just jump on an opportunity. -

This review is for Tammy. I have been coming to 246 multiple times in the past year for eyelash extensions and Tammy is probably the best and least expensive! It is a long process but it is worth it for special occassions:) I would not recommend it for everyday because the lashes do not last long especially if you have sparse lashes. The glue does not stick well to my asian lashes:( Overall, good price and Tammy does a great job.

My husband and I needed a new place to get our hair done. He was cutting his hair that was a little past his shoulders short and I needed someone to cut/dye my hair. We found this place through yelp about a year ago and now are frequent flyers!
I don't know the name of the lady that cuts my husbands hair but I go to Tammy and she is awesome! I'm one of those people that like to sit in the chair, read trashy mags that I would never buy, and just chill - not chat for the entire time, making small talk and she is totally cool with this. I just tell her what I want and she goes at it!
The entire staff is super friendly and the hair-wash massages are wonderful -- they even massage your temple/neck. -

Oh my god, I just came back from this place! I absolutely love the place. It's so tiny, and cozy! I came here to get my eyebrows done, and well, it was my first time waxing, so I was a bit scared. My mother and I were greeted by an empty salon. A few seconds later, a lady greeted us, and I found out she was the famous Tammy I've been reading about in the previous reviews. I told her about how I read about her on yelp, and she smiled. She's so charming! She lead me to the back room, which was very organized with supplies, and had a nice..(those beds that are in doctor's) thing to lay on. It had a nice light to focus on your face. Let me tell you, waxing doesn't hurt one bit.. Unless a little bit of the paper is on your eyelid, that might hurt a bit, but other then that, waxing is quick and painless, at least Tammy made it that way. I love this place! Definitely coming back. The place itself is very organized, and it has great lighting. I definitely recommend people to come here. (:

I found the place to get my hair cut!
I moved to San Jose and needed to find a new place for my haircuts. After some failed attempted, I stumbled upon this place (via Yelp).
This is probably the best haircut I have had in at least the last couple years. Tammy was friendly, personable, and meticulous. She did a very thorough job and cross checked a bunch of times to make sure everything was even and neat and exactly how I wanted it. It's actually the first time I
got exactly what I asked for. In terms of what I got, I couldn't be happier.
The men's cut is $16 which also includes a wash. So the price was good, the people were good, and the haircut was great. It's even better than some places that charge twice as much.
Overall, easily the best places I've checked out in the area. -

Pleasant experience. I'm really giving this place 3.5 stars but I'll round to 4. Called and managed to get myself an appointment for an hour later. I could have probably done without the 20 minutes of straight ironing my hair considering I was just going back to my sofa that afternoon to watch Vampire Diaries, but the layers looked pretty good and I got lots of compliments from the boy. Downside: it was a little hectic with my hairdresser answering the phone and answering questions from weirdos popping in asking for boxes of dye or whether they had an appointment for them because they had no idea which salon they were supposed to go to.
I brought the boyfriend for his cut the next day. He thoroughly enjoyed the complimentary shampoo/scalp massage. The only thing I don't get is why do men get a complimentary shampoo and cut for $14+ when I swear their haircuts always look way more complex!
I paid 35 before tip for long layers and two inches off. 16 for his cut which was pretty swell, except he was complaining the next day that his hair was uneven. I'm not really quite sure if I'm going to go back or try a new place. My previous hairdresser in SF gave me the same cut for 16 and didn't fuss over styling my hair that much, but I guess you're paying for the spa experience? However, the staff are friendly... I noticed that one of the employees actually got their customer some kind of danish and coffee while his hair was being dyed. Also, my hairdresser emailed me a few days later to make sure I was satisfied my cut. Nice. -

I have been going to Studio Spa for about a year now and it has been fantastic! They always take their time on doing your hair and give you a wash. The head massage during the wash is great!!! They are meticulous about cutting every single hair and getting it just perfect.
I would highly recommend this place. The people are super nice and listen to what you want. -

I LOVE ALICIA :D
I have gone to her to get my hair cut for the last almost 2 years..!! She is so amazing with layering and makes sure that she knows exactly what I want while also giving me her input and opinions. She pays so much attention to detail and takes her time (which is probably the one negative thing about her.. each time I go there it takes about 1.5hours just for haircut.. but it is so well worth it!) Appointments are recommended but they do take walk ins although you may have to wait. I always get appointments because I request for Alicia. -

I came in with a head of footlong, womanly/rockstar hair. I left feeling like a distinguished gentleman.
Tammy was really great... I showed her some photos on my iPhone of various medium-length hairstyles I liked. She was totally patient with me and as we went, she was cool with making changes and offered advice along the way. She let me decide what the best end-result would be by leaving some length at each stage.
I liked the service. Though this place is small, $20 to refine my Samson hair was worth it.
Credit cards accepted. Walk-ins welcome. -

Update 7/26/08:
Came a second time and got Alicia as my stylist - Instead of just the light rinse with the men's cut she offered a more complete hair wash with a scalp/neck massage. Quite a nice and enjoyable toss in for the same $14 men's cut price.
Really satisfied with the hair cut - she went the extra mile to make sure that everything was trimmed/cut/shaved perfect.
================
Fairly inexpensive haircuts - but with a slight language barrier problem. Being very White at a Vietnamese shop leaves me at a distinct disadvantage at specifying what I want for a haircut, and can leave me very very nervous (which is a scary thing when trying a new shop!)
Cut was fairly good and they even offered some styling advice after the cut. I already knew what they were suggesting, but its nice to see a shop that's willing to help a guy out.
Even so - the prices were great - $14 for a men's cut including a hair wash? Those prices felt like a steal to me, when I'm use to paying that much just for a men's cut at a traditional barber. With gas prices as they are, I can't make it out to my regular shops up the peninsula, and getting a relaxing rinse is a good way to finish things off. -

Let's be honest. I'm Italian and well, we're not blessed with the greatest hair genes. I've got a lot of hair on my head and my eyebrows are just out of control. It's quite tragic, really. If I can find a good waxer, I'm money.
I made an appointment with them yesterday for that day--I called 5 other places for an eyebrow wax and everyone was booked. Not bad to call same day and say you're coming in an hour. And the fact that it's literally around the block from me, I couldn't ask for much more.
I didn't know where they were going to do my eyebrow wax since the place is really narrow--didn't look like there was much room for a private room. Well, I was right! She plopped me down right on a shampoo sink and started to do my eyebrows out in the open! I was pretty embarrassed to be out in the main area getting my disgusting body hair removed off my face. Especially when another customer walked in while the woman asked me probably 800 times "Are you okay?! Are you okay?!".
Lady. I've gotten probably 30 eyebrow waxes done in my life. I'm a big girl I think I can handle the pain. But what I can't handle is putting my friggin' afro eyebrow removal on display in the front window. Could at least invest in a screen of some sort!? We're in Japantown for Christ's sake, they sell that crap everywhere!
She was meticulous, I'll give her that, but she was slow as hell. And she made sure that I knew that she thought I was the hairiest woman she'd ever seen. "Ooooohhh, you are hairy! Ohhhh, your hairs are curly!". I don't need the judgment, just wax and get me out of here. In addition, she pulled off the wax a little early in one area and had to go over it again, which is awesome for my sensitive skin.
And of course, as I tried to get out of there as fast as I could, the credit card machine wasn't working so ran my card using those stone age carbon copy slips. Ugh. Come. On.
I snatched my reciept for my $10.00 wax and left with my bright red forehead and power walked home up the block hoping I didn't see anyone I knew. -

LOVES it.
Ok, I'm a little biased because I wrote an article for them, and I think they knew it, but a good haircut is a good haircut. i mean GREAT.
I went out on a limb and decided to do something drastic with my hair (cut off more than 5 inches at a place I'd never been to? i'm sayin!)
First things first. The place is small. SMALL. So make sure to book an appointment in advance, otherwise you might end up waiting awhile. They offer their customers cookies and water, which i think adds a nice touch of customer service.
Try the deluxe shampoo which includes a nice massage of the scalp, neck, and face (i passed on the face option because I had a dinner thing afterwards). They also do Japanese Hair Straightening at a competitive price- $250. Most start at $350-$400.
So back to my experience. I brought in three pictures of the "Rihanna hair cut," (not the butch-looking one, but the bob with the longer layers in the front). Alicia did a fantastic job. At first i was nervous at how short it was, and looking down I noticed i was surrounded by 5-6 inch locks of my own hair- frightening, yes! But she took her time and made sure to ask me exactly what i wanted every step of the way.
Turned out amazing and I love it. If you want to do something drastic with your hair and want to walk out feeling like Rihanna (or other celeb), make an appointment with Alicia. You will be satisfied :) -

Went to this salon three time- twice for a full set and once for a fill. I always try a new nail salong more than once just to give them the benefit of the doubt.
The first visit was uneventful however when I went for a refill, the woman who was working on me informed me that she would rather take the nails off and start fresh because she would be able to do a better job. Esthician I am not, however I have been getting my nails professionally done for about 11 years now and I know when a new set is needed. I did not need a fresh set and actually had only waited two weeks in between visits. I explained I owuld just like a refil and when she refused 3 times, I decided to leave.
Fast forward 2 months later- I decided to go back and give another go since th elocation was too convienent to my apartment. Visit was uneventful however the nails fell off in 4 days! Two of them actually came off and for those of who ever have had acrylic nails know that if a nail pops off that sooner after getting them done there will mostlikely be quite a bit of pain and there was none so I guess that was the silver lining.
Refused to go back after that. On a positive note they offer you baby waters and cookies when you come in. If you don't like Britney Spears though, they play the same music video dvd over and over so just think about that in advance (I happen to love her so no qualms here) -

I'm almost hesitant to rate and write a review for 246 Studio Spa. I feel like it's a special secret that I don't want anyone to know in fear that it will suddenly become busy and over-priced. But alas I must share my positive experience. The people must know how great this place is!
Once I find a good stylist I stick with him/her and always hate the leap of faith that's involved with switching to someone new. I moved recently and was forced to make the leap and found this studio on yelp. Alicia (Quon) cut my hair and did an amazing job - she outdid my previous stylist! Yes, it's a bit strange to get a cut first and then a wash second, but whatever! She is incredibly thorough and detailed with a natural sense for hair and style. Did I mention the prices yet? They recently raised the price from $14 up to $16...um...hello?...do they realize this is 2009? Who charges so little?
Go to this place, but don't tell anyone. It's a secret! -

Me, my sister and bff wandered in looking for salvation from our rather disappointing lunch at Kazoo.
They couldn't take three as walk ins immediately, so I said to my fiancee, hey, you need a haircut. Which he did...I've been cutting his hair, because everyone that has touched his hair in Santa Cruz, where we lived has pretty much mucked it up. I muck it up too, but I do it for free, so we figure we come out ahead.
He got a great haircut! And for $14, really, quite a deal!
All of us girls got pedicures; I'm pretty happy with mine, as are my sis and bff...they took their time, I think we managed to watch most of a Shakira concert during the pedi...
Fiancee got a full mani/pedi. they did a GREAT job with him. Frankly, his feet are kind of gross...typical dude feet, meaning neglected and not very pretty...they did a great job! -

My hair stylist at 246 is Alicia and I adore her.
Alicia is sweet, friendly, patient, and most importantly, probably the most careful/thorough hair stylist I have ever experienced. She really took her time when cutting and coloring my hair, at one point I felt that she was almost going through every strand of my hair to make sure the color was thorough. I was very impressed.
I also appreciate the fact that after hearing what I wanted, Alicia offered her honest advice on what would and wouldn't work. I was very happy with the result and will definitely come back again. -

Convenient, fast, and inexpensive.
Came here for a brow wax and wasn't disappointed at all. The staff was extremely friendly and the shop is super clean. The male esthetician, forgot his name, was great to minimize pain and took his time detailing.
Other customers there (mani/pedi and getting haircuts) all look pleased with the service they were receiving. Definitely have many more services I'd be interested to try ... perhaps my next haircut. -

I came here with my mother to get pedicures. My boss referred me to this place 'cause he knows the people who own the place. I usually like going to Sakura for the ambiance and I was a little hesitant to try this place out.
The salon itself is tiny with a backroom for the nail services. They have two pedicure chairs and a little table for manicures. They have a TV in the back too and they played a Christina Aguilera concert for us while we were getting our nails done. (Random, but I appreciate the effort.) The color selection was alright, but we visited when they had just opened so I hope they've expanded their colors. The nail techs weren't overly chatty and extremely nice. My mom and I were really happy with the pedicure. I hate it when they don't really care to scrub your feet and what not, but they took the time to do it and my feet were nice and soft. My mom's nail tech scrubbed her feet twice! The pedicures lasted us a good month and my mom even got the flower designs on her toes. The flowers were done by the salon's owner and she did an excellent job.
I'd recommend this place for nails because it's less crowded than Sakura down the street and the prices are pretty much the same. If you don't care too much for super-girly ambiance and aren't going in large groups, this place is good for a solid pedicure. -

I always get the best service when I go to 245 Studio Spa. I usually have a cut, color and highlights done which really ties up Tammy's time, but she is always so accommodating and I am never disappointed with the result.. It's a relaxing atmosphere and not at all stuffy. I am always offered water or hot tea. I always feel very pampered when I go there.

I started going to 246 Studio Spa when my hairstylist, Catherine, first joined the salon. I've been going to Catherine for a good year and I can say unequivocally she is the best stylist I've EVER gone to. I've previously gone to "master" stylists, male and female, at "foo-foo" salons, and walked out very disappointed because they fail to listen to what I want in a cut..
Catherine LISTENS intently to how you want your hair to look and takes meticulous care to give you a precision cut instead of rushing through it in order to work on her next customer. She has the technical skill of an expert stylist in her cutting ability and a keen sense of what kind of cut will work best for your features and hair type. I NEVER got as many compliments on my haircuts (actually none, lol, how sad!) until I went to Catherine. I tell her that she gives a $75 haircut for half the price! I'll follow her wherever she goes! 246 Studio Spa is lucky to have her. -

I first went to this place last August while exploring JTown with my daughter. We had some time so I decided to get a hair cut. Wow, I really looked different coming out of there. The first thing out of my kids mouth was "Wow, its short". It was, and very different for me. I got a lot of compliments from coworkers, even my father in law. I was back in the area 3 weeks ago and went in for another cut. There was a younger girl and an older woman working. Well, I got auntie cutting my hair. She did an awesome job, not as short as last time though. Did I mention the shampoo, scalp/neck/shoulder massage? Wait a minute, this is a barber shop right?, never had anything like this before, hope I have enough money. She cleaned up the cut after the shampoo. The final price, $15!!!!!!!!!!!!!. Yep, I gave a good tip. Nothing like this in Hawaii. I will surely be back next time in the neighborhood. Thank you auntie!

I came in today for a quick brow wax and since I just walked in without an appt. I waited 5 min which I didn't mind. For me there isn't much to say because I didn't really talk that much, but since it was my first time there I did some signing and waited. the waxing wasn't too bad and my eyebrows are spiffy clean. though it is a little expensive, but to stay away from the traffic and irritating people all around the streets of mckee i'd much rather head here after class. sure it's $2-3, but I really don't mind.

Terrific haircut at an a affordable price. Much better than any of the chain salons I've ever gone to, and arguably the best cut I've ever had. I went in with a pony tail that had grown out for something like 3 years and came out with a good wash and wear do that can go several different ways and all look good. Apart from the vision, I was really impressed that Tammy did *lots* of detail work to provide overall shape. . .she more than earned the 2x tip! -

Tammy is awesome! She gives a great cut, is amazingly precise, and is so speedy. Other stylists spend too much time talking and not enough time paying attention to what they're doing or keeping track of their schedule. She listens to what I want, but also adds a great style of her own. Also, the cuts are unbelievably affordable!

i love this place. great hair cut and the shampoo and scalp massage afterwards is amazing. that alone would be worth the price which is also very reasonable considering the time they spend cutting and making sure everything is evenly cut. if you are used to the super cuts type of haircut be prepared to spend more time in the chair. to get this level of quality takes time. i always leave feeling great.

The girls that work here are just so sweet, I went in for a hair cut on impulse, I didn't know what i really wanted, and to be honest, the last hair cut I got was weird, so I needed a lot of TLC to get my hair back to life again. And I have to say they did a wonderful job. The next day I went back for highlights around 6:15pm, and they stay way pass closing just to finish the job, and they did a wonderful job. Giving the fact that I been there for 3 hours I watched about 4 different guys get their hair cuts I have to say this place rocks at man's cut as well. And I love my highlights, they are so cute!!! Great place, just a little small, but other than that, no complaints.
