The only reason I go here is because it's not too far from my house. Equipment is ancient, but do-able. Coming here after work (5:30-6 pm) sauna is always packed, as are most of the machines, so sometimes when I don't feel like waiting, I leave and just go running (as much as I hate to run). I'd rather come in the early mornings. Not so busy, better workout. The funny thing though are the cougs standing around in their spandex with a face full of make up...at the gym?! Not cute...The makeup will melt off, hello!!! LOL, it's ridiculous!

It's embarrassing to say that I live 5 minutes away from this gym. I am scared to come here when it's dark for the fear of getting jumped when I walk back to my car. The equipment is hecka old and dirty and if you're a girl, you're definitely going to get stares when you walk to the cardio machines. If you're someone who doesn't mind any type of attention, I guess that's fine... but I'm pretty sure most girls would rather not get noticed. Although it'll cost me extra gas money, I am seriously considering driving to the new(er) Milpitas 24 for sanitary reasons and for no old nasty men checkin' you out (even if you're in men's basketball shorts and a T-shirt).

Ugly.  Out-of-date.  Dirty.  These are just a few words I can use to describe this place after a brief encounter last week.  Rude.  Pushy.  Bad Mannered.  No Idea of what customer service is.  Bad sales tactics.  Down right retarded.  These are a few words and phrases I can use to describe the sales personnel of this particular 24.
It all started one Friday with a friend taking me to workout with him.  I am a member at Bally's in Fremont and was spending the day with my buddy in San Jose.  So we go to 24 with our workout towels in hand along with a guest pass for me.  When we get there, me being the guest, I had to fill out an application looking thing then meet some douche bag employee to show me around.  Ok lets get this over with so I can get on with my workout on with.  After Mr. Bag shows me around this poorly lit, dirty shit hole, and going over a brief sales pitch with me, he says that my manager likes to meet all of out guests.  So at this point I start to feel like this could take a while.  The manager, Octavio, comes over and tells me that he noticed on my application that I had marked down that I had been to a 24 before.  I tell him yeah, back in 2002.  He says sorry, (with a shit-eating grin on his face) that guest passes are a one time use thing and he can not allow me to use it.  He says (same shit-eating grin on his face) that I can pay a $15 fee to use the gym with no membership for the day.  I do the math for his stupid ass and tell him that it has been 6 years since my last visit to 24 and since then things have probably changed  within the club.  I am not in sales.  I dont know much about sales.  But I do know that if there is a potential sale sitting in front of you, you do whatever it takes to make that fucking sale.  This fucktard tells me that indeed things have changed but he cannot let me workout there with my guest pass.  Fucking Rediculous.  Would a car salesman not let a person test drive a Honda Civic if he had test drove one in 2002?!!?!?!?  Same fucking difference!!!!!!

Moral of the story Amigos' :  Steer clear from this dirty, nasty place with the stupid ass sales people.  Go to another 24 and pray for a better experience.  This one in particular makes my Bally's in Fremont look like a Five Star joint.  I almost want to rethink my review on that one.  Nah, just kidding.

This place needs to get remodeled.

There is a poor selection of weights and cardio equipment.

Did I mention that this place smells like gym shorts?

I stopped going here 5+ years ago.

Also, how many females get checked out while walking pass the basketball court? My girlfriend hated it. LOL

This is the first 24 hour Fitness I've gone to in San Jose. I gotta say that it's not at all that impressive.

The guy did his speech and it didn't take that long. Both of us went through the motions of him trying to sell me and me pretending to be interested. Kudos for him not making me sit through the whole thing.

The machines are really old. The heart rate monitor didn't work on the bike I was on - so for 25 minutes the bike thought I was slacking off and made me push uphill the whole time. My target heartrate was 157 and I was probably at 170 or higher the entire time.

The machines on the first circuit are what I used. Those machines are super newly uphosltered, but they're almost too much cushion. The machines themselves are fine - lubed up and they don't creak and they give you the support you hope for.

There's no towel service - which means you have to spend money on towels - or you can just let your sweat build up on the machine. GROSS! Oh and no water.

I think this is the 24 hour that time forgot. Everything is like 50 years old. The raquetball court is the same court as the basketball court. This thing is super small you can't get a half court game.

There's only one thing which redeems this place and that's the simple fact that there's a big parking lot for this place. But the store front is all closed off. If you don't mind working out in all flourescent lights it's fine. I guess that's why you can work out for 24 hours. They don't let you see outside to notice daylight or sunset.

Ok so, I guess I don't need a 'posh' gym. This one is just fine for me... gets the job done.  I know this location is a bit rundown and the machines don't tell your heart rate well but come on... it has a great variety of equipment, a half court, swimming pool, aerobics classes, etc.  It's not so clean but it's in an old building that's full of people who sweat and stink... it's a gym.  Deal with it.

That being said, it's the closest gym to my house and it' open 24 hours... both are HUGE bonus points in my book.  This means, I just got back from the gym and it's almost 2am.

I'll deduct a star for 2 reasons - they need to keep their computers in line and they should have punching and kicking bags.

Reason for the computer thing... The guy at the door had to hassle me tonight cause I didn't have my ID with me.  Who carries their purse to the gym when their boyfriend is driving?  Anyway, the address info I gave him was not what his computer read, though I've given them my new address 2+ times over the last year (once when I had training and once when I paid my annual fees)... and their computer still has it wrong.  If they can't keep it up to date, they should TAKE A PHOTO of every member and keep it in their file and on computer.

See ya there! :)

This is possibly the SINGLE GREATEST people watching gym of all time!  Seriously, I used to go here 4-5 times/week just to see the weird characters this place attracts.

First there was the "Space Cadet".  He had a blonde skullet (you know, like a mullet, only BALD on top and long in back), Napoleon Dynamite style shirts (before that movie even came out), and short shorts.  He was also excessively tall and excessively skinny; I'm talkin' legs that were about as big around as my arms.  I'm pretty sure he was placed here by an alien civilization to infiltrate human society and study our ways.

Then there was the "Fashion Victim".  He had a sky blue tank top, and lavender shorts.  His mustache and goatee were bleach blonde, as was his hair but only the hair that ran from his neck to the top of his ears, above that his hair was black and styled as a faux-hawk.  The faux-hawk itself was red.  He would pretty much stand by a piece of equipment for an hour at a time, and only use it if someone walked by, at which point he would grunt and groan until he got their attention.  Then he'd try to strike up a conversation about how hard he'd been working out.  He just REALLY wanted to belong.

Finally, there was the "Weight Trainer's Friend".  This guy would hang out in the weight room, and offer to help whoever happened to be the biggest guy in the room at the minute.  He'd spot for them, grab weights for them, cheer them on.  He'd NEVER work out, but seemed to have bought a membership in order to be a hanger-on to the biggest big guy in the room.  I guess he wasn't very good at it since he was NEVER hanging out with the same weight training guy twice.

There were also the people who would attempt some kind of military-style occupation of the machines.  They wouldn't really use them, but they'd just kind of hang out on them for 20 or 30 minutes at a time.  Do NOT ask these people if you can use the machine.  They will freak out and there WILL be a scene.

There were the weight hogs who would grab 8 or 10 different barbells and dumbbells, and just kind of carry them along from area to area, not using them, but feeling more secure in proximity to them, like these are MY weights and you CAN'T have them.  Like the machine occupiers, I don't recommend asking them if you can borrow a weight.

The place is CRAZY dirty, but I lived near it for two years and used to use it quite a bit.  The focus here seems to be on weight training, and the cardio area is almost non-existent.  Also, I guess they have a pool, but I wouldn't touch that water with a 10 foot pole!!  Still, if you like people watching, I highly recommend it.

Geeze louise!!! I remember when this place used to be called 24 Nautilus and everyone had laminated IDs... the same ones that we all used to carry back in elementary school.....

Anyway, from what I remember... this place used to and probably still is.... G-H-E-T-T-O!!!!! I mean, cmon, how are you gonna have 10 treadmills, but only have 2 of them function properly... while the remaining 8 has a neon green sign saying "out of order"... That irked me. Not only that, but they have a dirty a$$ pool and people be going in the sauna with all of their gym clothes.. Nasty.

One star for a 1/2 size bball court and a raquet ball room.

Of all the 24 hr fitness centers in the south bay, this one has the most features.  It's the only gym with a basketball court (granted, it's a homemade one), raquetball court, swimming pool, sauna, jacuzzi.  None of the other 24hr fitness centers has these amenities.  so if this gym only gets 2 stars, the other gyms should only get 1 star.  However, this gym doesn't have a juice bar like the one on parkmour drive so this gym doesn't deserve 5 stars.  If only this gym had a kicking bag like the ones at Milpitas Health and Fitness - would be an extra star.
Oh, if you like to people watch - preferably hot asian guys, this gym and the one in milpitas are the ones to go to.

San Jose, Capitol: Although this location on Capitol is pretty large and classified as an "Active" level gym in the 24 hour fitness chain, it is very old and run down.

It has a large pool area, with sauna, steam and Jacuzzi. But it is tired and old, and the locker rooms are run down and not kept up very well at all. It is a turn off, even for us guys, to go here without some disgust.

The machines and weights are typical. But this place is in desprate need of sprucing up. It is dank and dingy.

This is the worst 24 hour fitness in the area.  I first went in there looking for some information and the sales staff were extremely high pressure.  They would not let me leave until they signed me up.  They called the manager over who signed me up for what I later found to be a shady membership when I went to upgrade at a different location.  Most of the time it is crowded, a long wait for the machine I wanted to use, and not that clean.  If you have a membership, go to a different location.  If you want to sign up for a membership, do it somewhere else.

I have gone to this gym a number of times over a ten year period.  The staff issues change frequently as the staff turnover rate seems high here.  I have had some excellent service and knowledgable help as well as some of the worst nightmare situations described elsewhere.

The location of this gym is great in a busy section of SJ near a few neighborhoods and nearby a Light Rail station as well.  It is convenient by foot, car or public transit.    The gym is also open 24 hours (ironically not all 24 hour Fitness gyms are!!!).

This accessibility might be one of the drawbacks of the gym as it suffers from the hard use.  My biggest issue is that the people who use the gym seem rarely able to pick up after themselves and there are problems with some of the smaller parts (like the hooks for the pulley machines) constantly going missing.  I've seen a staff member spend over an hour putting away stray plates and dumbbells only to have all his work undone after a busy half hour.  Disgusting and all the weights on the floor make it very easy to trip and hurt onself (something I've seen happen twice!).

The gym has taken out handball courts and made them into a recessed area for cardio machines creating a strange configuration for the gym.  This part of San Jose needs a better maintained and ran gym but the franchise seems unwilling to put more money into it.

This is definitely a dirty and subpar example of the 24 hour experience.  However I do give it a stars for being in a convenient location and having a decent amount of equipment to use.

I sat on one of the bikes and started peddling and put my hands on the rails that are supposed to detect your heart rate.  The monitor showed me the minutes and level and calories, but kept blinking and beeping for me to place my hands properly to read the heart rate.  I looked down to make sure my hands were in the right place.  I kept gripping tighter and tighter, but to no avail.  WTF was going on? Was I secretly dead? Was this some Sixth Sense shit going on?

The next day I decided to try a different machine.  I remembered that I had used the fifth from the  left last time, so this time I tried the fourth.  Same story.  I hopped over to the second. SAME STORY.

There are not nearly enough treadmills, nor abs machines.

The trainers earn commission and are way too good at making you think they've cut you a sweet deal because you're special when in fact they're just giving you the promotion that has been advertised on big fat billboards all over the gym that you failed to see because you're an oblivious asshole.

This gym sucks.  But it's open convenient hours, and in many locations.  And I'm fat. :\

NEGATIVE STARS!!!!!!!This place is probably the nastiest and dirtiest 24 hours ever!!!!  The minute you walk in...regardless of time of day it is humid and hot. This place either has a broken AC system or does not have one at all. The machines and the equipment are always sticky and filthy looking. All the people who go to the gym do not bring towels nor do they care too. THe weights are all over the gym so you have to go look for a pair in order to finish a workout. I live so close to this place but I dont go to this location because it is plain sick!!!! I account this to all the ghetto ass ppl who go here. Also all the damn employees they have are ghetto.

This place is a little freaky.  It's so dim in this gym and there are steroid junkies EVERYWHERE!  The staff can be a little unprofessional, but all of the Group X teachers are really energetic and nice especially Enrique.  He's awesome!  He's the sole winner of both these stars.  Go to his spinning class...he's great :)  I can't understand him sometimes, but he has a contagious smile and high-fives everyone 5 min towards the end.  Oh and he plays that "I need a hero" song in techno.  Too cool...

This one is probably the closest to me, but it sucks, so I drive the extra 5 miles to other locations just because I feel like this one is just plain janky.

There's not enough varying free weights (I'm strong, but 55lbs. is just too much for me to do a bicep curl, you know?  I'm not in prison!).  I think they only have one curl bar to share amongst everyone, and there's no proper place to stretch save for this small corner where the bikes are!

Seriously, update and replenish your equipment guys.

Not too long ago I was just writing about how great 24 Hour Fitness was. I've been with them for 9 years and given them my support and busines recommending my friends and family to join. But apparently, their business model is to lie to get you to sign their papers and then forget about everything they promised.

And after you track them down after 6 months of non-returned phone calls and messages at the club, they will say that they've never promised you anything and tell you to call customer service. Customer service will refer you to promotions which is also unable to do anything either and tell you to call customer service or talk to their liar sales rep at their local club again.

This is the worst customer service I've ever gotten from a subscription based company.  They're not worth your money. they deserve a negative 5 stars

Man this place is ghetto! Its really really small, and I noticed people often have to wait for the cardio equipment. Often I would have to wait for a machine and people there are sometimes rude. The staff when I went was worse than the gym and its surrounding area... which was vile already.

I didn't give it the only one star rating because of two things:

- Fairly close to me
- Weights go up to 150 lbs.

I'm not very sure why the basketball court here is always near packed seeing as how these guys could just drive a few miles to Morrill or any other park/school to play ball, but okay. The swimming pool is full of old people...old...half-naked people. Think about it.

At prime time you're guaranteed not getting the spot you wanted. Even in the early morning or late night the machine you wanted probably is broken. If you're coming from Berryessa, why not get on 680 North and head to the 24 Hour on Jacklin? If you're coming in from Saratoga, Cupertino, etc. go to the one near Race Street.

The only bad thing about the Race Street location is they use metal plates therefore dropped weights caused by deadlifts or squats will probably hurt a lot more (but what's the difference between 45 lbs. of metal and 45 lbs. of rubber, really?).

This gym is nitty and gritty. All the things people have said is true.

However, those who grew up in this neighborhood, (North and East side SJ), the gym reflects the environment and lifestyle of the area. Dirtay!
I'm a North side SJ native, I grew up there when it was bad--not so much now. So when I step into this gym, I don't really notice all the little things people complain about. I guess you just get use to it.

Don't get me wrong, Ive been to several other 24hr fitness locations in the Bay. And this one is by far the worse in comparison to FIRST IMPRESSIONS and APPEARANCE...

But if you actually go to the gym and get real sweaty because of grueling cardio and lifting, you don't really care about things people mentioned.

But if your one of those people who go to the gym and not even break a sweat, and just go to ease your mind in thinking you are being healthy for being there, or girls who just go because they know its a sausage fest and going there will get you many looks to help your self esteem, then yea maybe you complain about the cleanliness.

Santa Theresa, Hillsdale, Fremont, Milpitas, 24hr fitnesses would/will get 4 stars from me.. This gym would get the same as well, but their "basketball court" is the racketball room with a basketball hoop mounted to the wall too high, and not enough threadmills.

A gym is a gym, as long as they have the equipment there. And these places are dirty, losing weight and getting fit is not clean, theres a lot of blood, sweat, and tears that go on in these facilities.

this place was pretty gross, but it was as local as i could get at the time i enrolled... i hated working out regular hours because this place was always filled with guys that made googly-eyes at you while you did your cardio, and that just didnt seem right to me... so i worked out at the weirdest hours of 12am - 4am... [im nocturnal by nature...] - and yes, the first few times i worked out here that late, it was sorta scary walking out to my car by myself, but as i got to know some of the doormen, they were gracious enough to walk me to my vehicle... so that wasnt so bad... but this place needs to be demolished and burned to cleanse itself of the stench though... *shivers*

negative zero star for this stinky, dirty gym.
I just moved to San Jose last May and totally not familiar with the area. I picked this Capitol location to transfer my 1 gym access membership from SF because it's closest to my new South bay home. Big mistake! I felt so bad to be in this place, like I subjected my self to the most pathetic environment. I would cover my nose with a towel as I walked around this smelly gym. I've never felt more scared of germs and bacteria until I set foot in this place. I have no other words for the bathrooms except disgusting, disgusting and disgusting!
Thanks to a friend and eventually the reviews here on yelp, I've happily discovered the 24 hour fitness gym on Jacklin Road, Milpitas.

WARNING: This is gonna be a NOVEL.

This gym...ok let me start that I thought it was getting better because I haven't talked to people that work there in a while and I go at a quieter time so its been ok. I been a member of this gym on and off for almost ten years now and nothing EVER changes. Their poor staff (always trying to rip you off), dirty equipment, and usually your favorite thing to use is "out of order" or constantly has someone on it.

I did some homework about their pricing and membership information last week so I could get my best friend to join. I finally convinced him to go and we went today and once again their staff is unprofessional and inconsistent.

We got a free trial pass but it only works for first timers. He hasn't been at a gym for more than five years and they still keep record of that stuff. Its so lame because every club is different especially in that much time lots of changed. I told the guy at the desk we just really wanted to check out the club and equipment before my friend made a decision to get a membership there because it is a big investment that you know is a "jump on the bandwagon" type of things. Its a fad. But we didn't notice that it was for first time club members only. So we just explain ourselves and he said ok. We went to talk to another person (they like to pass you around and give you long speeches no one wants to hear) and we reexplain ourselves about the whole situation. My friend felt really good about it and was going to just get a membership but we had to talk to a third guy and he was the one that tick us all off. He was professional at first but he talking to us about things we already heard before he was asked to come over and started asking us very unnecessary questions like "why do you want to go to the gym?" Really do you have to ask? We ask him about the cost and if the certain fees for firm and he referred us to the "high school" plan or the "VIP" plan and said to us "you can afford this--its like fifty cent a day." That is when I started to get upset...then he asked his questions again...now I was ticked.

I repeated myself one more time about how we just wanted to see the club and if that was possible and he brought up the plans again. I was like thanks for listening. He said he has been with the company for ten years--congrads--hella lame. Seriously...it was one day to see what the gym was like--it shouldn't have been that hard to negotiate something reasonable or just say no. I walked out really ticked off.

On the bright side of this negative experience, I spoke to the manager today about the whole situation. He was great. I think he was a personal trainer previous to being a manager. He was really nice and took my complaint very professionally.

This gym is like a three or four I mean it has changed and cleaned up a lot in over ten years new equipment and heaps cleaner than before but the staff makes this environment a one minus the manager.

My father goes here to use the treadmill and elliptical to get aerobic exercise for his heart condition. I went here ONCE when I was training for my school's swim team.

And I was and am extremely disappointed in this place. Mostly with the staff. My younger sisters and I were given a tour of the place by a scuzzy, greased hair, car dealer-type employee. After the tour, he gave us a "medical evaluation" where he weighed each of us. Then proceeded to harass my sisters and me into taking a membership into the club: telling my 5 foot 7, size 6 sister that she was 20lbs overweight and blatantly telling me that I wore baggy clothes to hide my figure because I was fat and lazy (though I was wearing all my swim team gear at the time, which had the team's logo printed on it in huge, eyecatching letters). We left in a huff, after telling off the scuzzy employee, though my father still uses their gym.

As for the gym itself, it's layout is quite awkward and uncomfortable. The stationary bikes are in a rather cramped room of sorts to the side and many of the machines are placed in rather uncomfortable positions on the floor. The pool is too small with too many people in it and the jacuzzi is rather disgusting. You're better off in the local YMCA.

If you want a better gym experience, go to Ballys.

I give it three stars.
One for being so close to home.
One for being open 24 hours...stupid, I know but some 24's aren't.
and one for never being majorly crowded when I go there.

I could do without all the working out in jeans, polo wearing, macho men there..
I go, get my workout it, and leave... good enough for me.

This gym is located in a kinda ghetto strip area with Dollar Store, Mervyn's, Popeye's, etc.

As a first time member, I thought the service was really unfriendly, rude, and unprofessional.  I waited about 40 minutes before I was finally helped by an employee who ended up convincing me to sign up for a plan.  Geez, I was only there to redeem my free 30-day trial!  He clearly stated that I could cancel my membership at anytime to receive a full refund.

Um, why did I even believe him?

I cancelled my membership 2 days before the pay period and of course by that time they'd already deducted the expensive ass enrollment fee from my account.  I called the 1-800 number to try to salvage any amount I could to no avail. The rep said I needed to cancel my membership within 4 business days even though the employee at Capitol said I could cancel it at any time.  Basically, they're shady and I'm quite disappointed that I fell for their shenigans.

They're lucky enough to get one star because I hear they're moving to the old Albertson's across the street with huge renovations to come.

No doubt this gym needs an upgrade. The machines are  a bit sweaty and sticky.  Why? Well, there's just more people who use this gym than others.  Duh...  More people, more dirt.   Hence, the need for a shower after a work-out is crucial.
Anyway, I like the gym because the staff, I think, is great.  They're very friendly.  Susan, the day care staff, is completely trustworthy.  My 6 year-old son loves coming here.  He's so popular!
Because there are a lot more guys who work out here, there are, consequently, more pervs and obnoxious oglers than your average gym.  Ignore them.  They're pretty harmless and, at times, helpful in helping restack weights.
Overall, if you're serious about your work-out, you'll pay less attention to the dirt in the machines and more on raising your heart rate.
UPDATE 9/29
I have been going to this gym consistently for the past  six months.  Overall, the staff and the trainers are very friendly; however, yesterday, two of the managers disrespected me beyond belief that I will NEVER, EVER go BACK to this GYM again!  I have never been so mistreated.  Both the assistant manager and the club manager, who are relatively NEW in their position, speak to their clients in a very CONDESCENDING manner and lack communication skills. I'll take my business and money somewhere else.
