Coming from San Leandro, this gym is soooooooooooo small.  I have to say that originally, I felt really cramped here but after about 2 years of coming to this gym, it's come to feel normal.

I find that this gym basically has everything you need.  I will say that I was not super impressed with all the equipment but it suffices.  At least they have an abundance of cardio machines.  I never take classes so I guess that doesn't matter to me at all, but it can get crowded here and I hate waiting for machines.  It's a waste of time so I totally go during off hours which is basically anytime outside of the 5pm - 8pm time period.

And on a side note:  I don't see many women at the gym and for some reason most of the reviews are from women. hmmmmm.

    Why I like this gym:
I frequent Ocean and Potrero 24hr and this one is the best.

The staff is really nice. I might be swayed by the fact that front desk Sarah is really super sweet, remembers my name and is always encouraging while Fitness Manager Sarah kicks my ass during my training sessions. Wait... OF course this would convince me to like this gym because its called GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE!! :)
Fitness Manager Sarah is my trainer and has been for some time. She is fun and friendly which can make the grueling training sessions go by. BUT she will also make sure you get your work out and wont take any slacking!!
I might mention FM Sarah has a bit of a cult following. Now Cult Following might be a bit strong of a phrase but you will see what I mean.  Having known her while she worked at another 24hr in my neighborhood I have found that she is well known. I have talked with neighbors and family who frequent Ocean 24hr and once I mention Sarah  they all know who I am talking about. Often described as intense, tough, back breaking trainer, Sarah defiantly knows how to get you sweating. Don't let this scare you, instead let this motivate you and inspire you to go in next time to inquire about personal training for your self.

    Some details:

    - Also Fitness Manager Sarah likes a clean space, she is consistently putting away the free weights and other gym equipment. This shows throughout the gym and allows the customers to know where the gym equipment is and have ready access to it.

    - If there are any broken machines they are taken care of quickly, this is in contrast to other gyms where I find the same broken machine in the same spot for a month +

    - The weights section of the gym is small but the other customers who use this portion are always very courteous of other patrons. This is in contrast to other gyms where the weights section of the gym sometimes feels like a prison yard. As a women its some times hard to wander in to the testosterone filled weights section but I easily feel comfortable here.

Tips on how to use the gym:

You know I come to the gym to sweat, If I go home smelling like roadkill all the better because I know that I WORKED OUT!  Yeah it can be smelly but thats because people are working out, I will say I try not to raise my arms too much. Also because I come here to sweat Im not picky.

Yeah the parking can be a pain, BUT where in SF is parking not a pain? HEY they actually have a parking lot unlike most places. Plan accordingly.

GO during the OFF hours then you wont have to deal with the crowds....  The ocean 24 can get super crowded and its a lot bigger. No matter what the size of the gym it will always get busy during certain hours.

Ok so I've been a member for about 4 years now and have finally been hitting a stride trying to get back in shape lifting and running.  Over the last 6 months of coming more frequently I have gotten to know some of the staff well including Brian S. my trainer of 3 months.  In that time he has motivated and helped me get the most out of my visits.  I am never bored with his workouts.  The best is that he makes you feel comfortable even if you are a beginner and is extremely positive.  I can not say enough good things about him not to mention I have lost 6% body fat in just 3 months working out with him.  On top of that Sarah at the front desk is a sweetheart and the new GM Brian has the gym looking better than ever.

Charlie is a bad teacher when it comes to teaching Zumba class on Saturdays.  I have approached the management and provided the feedback about Charlie, but it seems that it did not go through.

I also think that the gym needs to be upgraded considering it is in a nice area of the city.  I also think that they should add AC becasue every time we take ZUmba class, it is a steam room because there was a previous class.

Housekeeping needs to be improved in this gym as well.

I have been a member with 24-hour fitness for the last 12 years.  I do agree with the stuffy smells when the gym gets pack, but what do you expect if you go after business hours? I suppose is why the gym opens 24-hour; you choose and pick.

I seldom give anything a 5-star or so much spend my time writing a review.  Here's my take on this.

    1) Excellent customer service and helpful employees.  Even when I workout downstairs, the trainers and receptionist knows my name.

    2) I have had a personal trainer with 24-hour in Sacramento over 10 years ago and the experience was not positive.  I like to give things a second chance, hence, everyone in this gym is in top notch shape.   I choose to be trained by the fitness manager, Sarah, as I have heard and seen how intense her workout was with her clients.  I have never sweat so much in my life and have lost 10-pounds in 3 weeks.  This woman takes her job seriously and your success is her goal.

    3) I do my workout either in the early mornings or after 8pm when it isn't so packed, and live a few blocks from the gym.  No complaints.

I've been coming to the 24hrs fitness center off and on for the past year. I've tried the 24hrs downtown and call me crazy, but I feel the most comfortable with this gym. Yes, it's smaller, but I like that, it feels more like a community gym then a place where I will never see the same people. Also, the people that work here and come here are very nice. People actually smile here and look lik they are enjoying their workouts. I did try their personal training and my girl was very nice. Though, sadly saw not much more results than what I was already doing.

About the classes, yes they are very crowded. I wish they would add more classes. Even maybe something out of the normal, how about belly dancing? I'll keep coming to this gym as it's close to my house and it's pretty good.

I work out with Brian Sullivan at 24 Hour on Market, and he is great.  I dropped 12 lbs right away, and I am gaining muscle.  He is always changing the exercises so I don't get bored, and he really pushes me.  Even though I have a crazy work schedule, he finds time for two sessions a week.  Hope to bump it up to three a week soon!

HELL NO! went to check out this gym because my buddy had to pick up his car. First off the equipment is old and squeaky. The parking is horrible, not an encouraging environment like you would get from most 24 hour gyms..
Parking SUCKS,  the looker room, was smaller and cramped. Ummmmm next time it's a rest day!

I HATE this gym. It's stuffy, smells, and the machines are broken most of the time. The weight room is small and I always think I'm going to kill someone with my barbell.

I also 'trained' with Michelle twice, both times I hated the exercises and they made me feel sick. This isn't normal for me since I can easily perform in 90min spin and boot camp classes without a problem. We had to cut the sessions short because I felt ill from the exercises and after a few attempts of trying to schedule a third one, she basically says that its best if we skip it altogether! So I ended up paying $100 for little to no training and management has nothing to say about it.

Honestly, I would rather pay more money each month to go to a better gym like Crunch or Equinox. It's worth it in the end. For now, I'm sticking to the Montgomery St. gym, which is a little more bearable but still largely inadequate.

First of all,  I have to start out by saying that I have ALWAYS been a little twerp.  I am just shy of 6 feet tall and have always been around 145lbs.  I started training a couple of months ago for the aids lifecycle and i thought it would be a good idea to gain alittle upper body strength to pair with my strong legs.  So I went into 24 hr fitness with little expectations knowing that I wanted a trainer to help me out, show me what to do.  Assessing my goals, they paired me with Brian Sullivan.  In a matter of weeks this guy has helped me transform into a full fledged foxy dude!  He has a wealth of knowledge about nutrition and has been able to give me wonderful recommendations on a diet that gives me results!  After 10 weeks I am just shy of 160lbs and feeling strong.  I am in the best shape of my LIFE!  I highly recommend Brian. He alone gets 5 stars in my book!

I have been a member of 24 Hour Fitness for almost 13 years.  Tonight I had one of the rudest customer services experiences that I have ever had from an employee there.

I called and spoke with Joel, asking for the date that my annual membership fee was due.  He told me that was giving out confidential information.  When I questioned this, he put me on hold for almost five minutes.   While on hold, I told my friend what had happened (he was sitting next to me) and that it sounded strange.  All of a sudden, Joel says, I have you on mute, but I can still hear you.  He was shouting at me.  Then he told me the date of my dues and just hung up on me.

I cannot understand why employees are not trained in basic customer service skills, especially when so many qualified people are looking for work.  I think I'm going to go there tomorrow and speak with the manager.

Basically, this is my "last resort" gym-- you know, the gym I go to when I am too tired to take the extra ten minutes to drive anywhere else and the Castro Gold's Gym has already closed.

The only other time I go to this gym is for the classes, and even then I am not all that enthused; some group classes are very cramped and they let people "reserve spots", so unless you get there an hour early for the more popular classes (yes, I did type an hour and no, I'm really not kidding), expect to stand in the back and not see your instructor if you manage to get in at all.

Parking is also pretty bad here.  They have this joke of a garage that fits like 18 cars, so plan on taking an alternate mode of transportation to work out here, or you can look forward to schlepping around the 'stro for half an hour to find a parking spot.

I see some people have used the words "convenient", "clean" and "not cramped" in previous reviews to describe this location, and wonder if they meant to review a Club One facility.  This gym is tiny, free weights are always in use, and available machines are hard to find.

The locker room is also very small, and there is no jacuzzi, sauna, steam room or pool.

At least this isn't the 24 Hour Fitness on Potrero (had it not a pool, that place would have absolutely zero redeeming qualities and it is by far the worst of the gyms I frequent).

But let me end on a positive note:  This gym is in a really great location, the staff is nice, it is sometimes clean, and since it is in the 24 Fitness chain, dues are super cheap.  They also stay on top of changing their "workout of the day", so you can reap the benefits of different routine ideas without needing a personal trainer.

Ok seriously, who parks under the gym?  Cause there are like eight million spaces on Market or the surrounding side streets if you come at the right time, and none of the BS of that crack den of a parking lot.

    But I digress.

I come here for Pablo's Zumba class on Thursdays.  And if you didn't already know, this place gets PACKED for classes.  I mean, these people take their gym seriously.  Like they would cut a bitch for trying to jack their space in class.  So get there with plenty of time to spare, and be patient and stand in line just like everyone else.  Or pay the extra dollar to buy your class space.

The locker room is small and gets super crowded between classes, but it's about a million times better than the Potrero location so YAY.

I just started coming to this gym a couple weeks ago after signing up for my membership online. The customer service from the start has been very friendly. It is a fairly small location where you walk upstairs to the locker rooms and to most of the equipment. The gym works for the amount of space that they have to work with. There is a lot of equipment in a limited amount of space but I never felt like the gym was too cramped for me to work out comfortably.

The location is clean and I actually like it a lot as long as I don't go during the busy hours. I have noticed to stay away from lunch hours and also hours between 6 and 8 in the evening. It's no fun having to wait for equipment. I usually use the treadmill, weight machines and occassionally the elliptical and cycles. I only had to wait once so far when I came in around 10 or 11 in the morning and there were a bunch of people. I have not been to any of the classes yet but I heard from others that they fill up really quickly so you should get there early or pay a dollar to reserve a spot in class (?).

A lot of people are commenting about the AC is not working. I do agree that the heat hits you as soon as you walk upstairs but as for it affecting my workout... I don't really mind it. The more I sweat, the better! We're here to work out out, right? There are small make shift air conditioners around the gym which don't do too much for the entire gym but if you stand next to them after a good run.. very refreshing! haha

Make sure to bring your headphones because the music inside the gym is a little lower than you would like to get you pumped up. Also bring a towel for when you're all hot and bothered, a lock to lock up your belongings in the locker room, a water bottle or beverage to keep you hydated. You know.. the gym essentials.

I've been going to this gym for MORE THAN A DECADE, primarily b/c Richard is such a great instructor [body pump, boot camp] & he has developed a well-deserved following who have faithfully taken his class. But new bosses just changed the sked from Richard's usual Mon & Weds 5:30p classes to just Mon @ 6:30p, which is too late for most of us. His new boss is taking over the Weds class. What made me mad was that mgmt made these changes w/o even talking to the people who've been taking his classes faithfully; it was just utter disregard for what members think or want. Since Richard is the only reason I've been coming to this location, I'll just change my membership since they obviously dont care about members here.

The only reason this place deserves any stars is because of their staff.  They are actually kinda nice and friendly.  Delighted.

Their AC went out a some time ago  and have yet to fix it.  So they have a make-shift, Macgyver set-up going on.  It doesn't seem to be working very well though.  Even when it's really cold outside, it's surprisingly hot upstairs, like a sauna.  Losing.

The equipment is somewhat antiquated.  Most of their equipment is so old that I'm afraid it's going to break using it.  Not to mention everything is compressed in such a small space.  Dated.

Besides the staff being very nice, they aren't making the rounds, organizing the weights, like they do at Golds.  Sorry I said the 'G' word.  But really?  Come one.  Since the people who use these weights don't give a crap and won't put them away,  it rests on your shoulders 24.  Useless.

Overall, this particular 24 HR Fitness in The Castro, is lame.  Unfortunately, it's convenient.  However, I hear great things about the one on 2nd St and also on Van Ness.  Maybe I should pay them a visit.  Bye-bye.

The best way to describe this gym: adequate. Barely.

If you go at an off-peak time, you will find space in the closet of a locker room and probably a cardio machine to use. If you go at a peak time, well... good luck. I usually just come for cardio (when the A/C is working) or some group exercise classes.

Don't even bother with this gym if you want to use weight machines. Far too few and usually too busy to use effectively.

In the gym world, I think you get what you pay for. I am SO not willing to shell out hundreds of dollars a month for a fancy gym membership, so I stick to my $12 24 Hour membership. My frugalness has its downsides, and so I'm forced to endure the hell holes that are 24 hour gyms in the city.

    The pros:
    - I've actually never had to wait that long for a treadmill (maybe I go at off hours?). Thats a big change after the battle-royal over equipment that I used to have to deal with at the marina location.
    - proximity to my apartment
    - the fact that they play Bravo (I love me some Real Housewives while I run)

    The cons:
    - The lack of AC. Ugh. It's a freaking sauna in here. The heat hits you like a wall as soon as you walk upstairs.
-Tiny locker rooms with a non-functional scale.

Moral of the story: run outside if you can.

I actually like coming to this one now especially since it's close to where I work. It's convenient and the staff are always so nice and friendly. There have been a lot of changes since I last wrote my review. Downstairs, they added some ellipticals and freed up some space for trainers and their clients to use. The evenings are still a very busy time so if you like some space and some time on your favorite cardio machine, I'd say the mornings are your best bet. Shoutout to Sarah (front desk), Sarah (Fitness Manager) and Tim (Trainer) for making my time there motivating and ass kicking. Results to follow....

This 24 Hour Fitness is my new location after spending about a year working out at the Potrero Hill spot. So much nicer and easier to get to!

    Pluses:
    - Locker rooms are CLEAN!
    - Has a decent number of cardio machines for the overall size of the gym
    - Staff are friendly and attentive

    Minuses:
    - Can get crowded at peak hours (after work)
    - Seems like they could use the space a bit better -- the only facilities on the downstairs level is the spin room.

This is my "main" 24 hr fitness gym.  It's small but gets the job done.    I joke that this gym is so gay that it would be a night club if only it served alcohol....hehe...but  it's my favorite gym.

One time I saw a guy  running on the treadmill (in the shortest shorts ever) try to wave at another guy across they gym and he lost his balance  and fell off and it was HILARIOUS.  I still laugh about it sometimes.

That being said:   I fell off the stair machine the other day.  But it was my headphones fault.  They got tangled and then made me tangled.

    Pro's-
People seem to be friendly there, staff and members.
Equipment is generally in working condition.
All the essential equipment is there.
    They have locker rooms

    Cons-
It's really small.  Sometimes hard to find a space or mat to stretch on.
The machines don't have TV's on them, which isn't a big deal but it's nice.
The locker rooms are really, really small.

Yes, it's super crowded right after work. Yes, I occasionally have to wait for a machine. And yes, I have to plan in advance if I want to take a class by reserving a spot BUT the staff is incredibly friendly, the facilities are clean and the classes are awesome (yay Zumba!).

I've been working with personal trainer for the past couple of months and though it's very pricey, it's been worth every penny! Tim C is super friendly, a great motivator and wonderfully patient with me, even though I've got zero talent for athletics. I would HIGHLY recommend him to anyone looking to start working out, especially if they don't have a history of being active.

The locker rooms are clean, although I wish the staff would clean the bathroom more often.  It grosses me out whenever I step in front of a urinal that has a shiny coat of urine on the floor.  The place gets busy during lunch, and extremely busy between 17:00 and 18:30.  By that I mean, I have seen classes where people are appropriately spaced out and lines for treadmills can reach double digits even if there is a 30 minute workout limit.

Aside from that, the machines and the equipment are fairly new.  The free weights are great, although I wish they had more benches and another squat station.

This place is in the Castro, so it has a much higher guy/girl ratio than any other gym I have been a member of.  Personally, I think guys smell worse than girls do, so use your imagination in regards to the overall smell of this place during peak hours.

Despite it's smaller size, this gym has what you need to break a sweat.

In comparison to the 24 Hour Fitness location in Daly City, this gym:
    - Has large windows that let extra light in (the Daly City location is sort of dim)
    - Isn't as congested, the smell of musty/sweaty men is almost nonexistent
    - The workers are more personable and get to know you on a first-name basis
    - Has more up-to-date machines (most of the machines at Daly City are basically these machines' great grandparents)

If I lived closer, I would frequent this gym.

-1 star because an employee was hounding my friend to get a membership started at this particular location and when he opted out to finish up his free 7-day trial the employee's demeanor changed and wasn't as welcoming/friendly as before.

24 hour fitness- the Costco of gyms.

It's cheap, and  convenient because of the multiple locations but come on...
24 Hour Fitness does not provide quality service on any level that I've experiences. They don't  yoga mats for  classes or have soundproofing which means being distracted by the incessant blaring  top 40 pop music playing to all the stair master junkies in the main room.
I have to say that they have had some good yoga teachers, which I learned a lot from.
Bad lighting, bad music. No intro session on how to use the machines. No sauna, no nada.

The front desk people are not the nicest, at this location either.
The other locations are better. Downtown is cooler, bigger, friendlier and have good classes.

    Really a bare bones gym.

    Pros:
    -24 hours
-large studio great for stretching when there's no class
    staff is pretty friendly.
-better than the portrero hill one.

    Cons:
-Smelly. One time I was running next to a guy who smelled so bad I actually had to run with my head turned to the opposite side and once I couldn't take it anymore I actually cut my run short.
-Locker rooms are pretty gross. I would never shower there.

Until today I have been relatively happy with 24hr. I have been a member for 3 years (this time and maybe 8 years total) and used it very little, unfortunately. However this year was going to be different I am really going to get healthy and loose weight.

Well the gym has been quite good for the last 3 weeks. I am just at the point where I want to start integrating more intense aerobic and lifting and boy was I in for a surprise. I was told and see on the website my gym offered body pump and other aerobic type classes with my membership. I went to one the other night and it was OK, not the Les mills one.

Of course I want to get into zumba or les mills to see what people were talking about. So I arrived 45 minutes early ..only to find that people pay a dollar to reserve the classes.. so I left work early to be on a waiting list.

It gets WORSE, now i am standing around waiting for a space. The class time comes and goes and while there are mysteriously steps set up for people and the room seems full..they are no where to be seen. A 24hr team member person comes and picks up some slips from people I am assuming have reserved, but this is no where near the amt of step. hmmm

Then the guy next to me turns and sais.".it's hopeless..it's a catch 22 even for the next one. He sais yeah I wait around forever but people setup steps for their friends and the whole front row stays for zumba. If you pay extra you might get in.."

As if on que, a recruitment guy walks by and sais to the young lady and you get access to our "les mills" aerobic classes they are very popular. .... ARGGH.. I held my breath and didn't say anything.

So basically I can't get access to classes that I supposedly had access to as part of my membership or even if I did pay extra..or maybe I will..erh.. no one knows.. The last class I took at 24 was first come first serve and no one saved spots for their friends..and 24 hour didn't want extra money from me for the "chance" to take a class that is supposed to be included in my membership..This is awful, i feel totally cheated.

Do all 24's do this?? Why did they create such an easily abused policy ? They used to increase classes available if they were over booked I guess they don't and instead just want an extra 30 bucks..this makes no sense. I am so sad I can't take advantage of classes .. I need to find a new gym :( and maybe next stop better business bureau.. 24FAIL :(

It's a nice gym. The prices are GREAT and it's always clean and never smells funky.

Minus half star for *really* inconvenient water fountain locations.

Minus half a star for no wifi. Come on! What's it cost, $60/month? No wifi means I can't watch youtube or listen to my streams on my ipod while I'm on the elliptical.  I can go into a starbucks or Peet's or McDonald's and use their wifi for HOURS but not in my gym?  LAME!

Minus half a star for regularly not enforcing their no-cellphones policy. If they're not enforcing their no-cellphones policy, I have to assume they are't enforcing their no-cellphone-photography policy, either. Creepy!

Minus half a star for being small. It's half the size of the other 24 Hours in the area. This leads to overcrowding. This last one can't be fixed easily but the other three sure can.

So this 24 hour has become my new gym since I moved into Duboce Triangle.  A lot nicer than the facilities in Potrero Hill that I used to go to.

The downstairs is mostly just an entrance.  There is an odd stretching room in the front that faces market street for all to see and a cycling room in the back.  Most of the equipment is upstairs, although its a bit tiny.

The free weights area is a bit cramped and small.  My one pain point is there is no dedicated are to do ab work upstairs so everyone kind of sets up where ever there is empty floor space to do abs.

I also hate how this place has the old precor elliptical machines.   I hate those stupid swinging arms thing while you move.  I prefer the newer ones that don't have the swinging arms.

    Good amount of step/treadmill machines.

I only go early in the morning and it still seems pretty full.  I would avoid going here during peak hours around 4-8PM.

I started coming here when my usual gym closed for renovations. This is now my regular gym. I like the layout. The treadmills are in the middle of the room; it's nice not feeling like I'm going to fly into a window when running. There are no lines for the machines but I'm here before even the buttcrack of dawn. I know there are lines after work and on weekends. I love how there are never lines for the (female) shower. The downtown showers always had lines.

I like the music (pop, dance, Top 40) but it isn't so loud that you need to crank your headphones to lumberyard decibels. Fitness classes are good. Sometimes they are nearly empty and sometimes you are thisclose to each other. At least the person in front of my face had clean feet. There are two rooms for classes. It's conveniently located near the Church Street MUNI station. This place even has a parking lot, maybe.

Lastly, I love that this gym broadcasts Bravo. (Not that important, just fun.) There are a few TVs installed overhead with closed caption on. Choose your machine wisely.  A gem from Millionaire Matchmaker: "I'm more of an a** guy than an boob guy. My girl can buy her own boobs." Hear that, ladies? Remember, do squats because a**es like him enjoy a**. He may have actually said "I can buy her boobs." I was too busy laughing to remember.  Going to the gym should always be this fun.

I've been a member here since July 2007 but never thought to post a review until now.
I like this branch because I can go there early in the morning before work.  It's a small facility, but at 7 a.m. it's not crowded and I can use any piece of equipment that I want with little or no wait.
The men's locker room is also small and can get crowded, but I can shower and dress with very little trouble nearly all the time.  Aside from paper trash, the locker room is clean and well-lit
The gym has switched to a finger scanner for entry, but I often have trouble getting the scanner to pick up my fingerprint and have to use another scanner.  I liked it better when the gym used a card scanner.
The staff is friendly and helpful and will take time to answer questions or show how to use equipment properly and safely.
This gym suits my needs perfectly.
By the way, the photos are NOT of this branch.

Not a good time to use this location at this time.  The AC is broken and the ambient temperature registers at a range of 76-79F from the portable ACs which still don't resolve the problem.

Unless the AC problem has been resolved properly, which has happened many times before, I would not suggest that you sign up as a member here.  I don't have a choice as I have already paid for my membership and the gym is closest to where I live.

As of  Monday, January 9, the branch manager informed me that it could take another month to get the part before the AC can be fixed.  The unit has been down already for a month.

On the other hand, if you like working in a hot and humid environment, then you'll be happy here.

January 2012... New Manager (the 8th, or so, within 10 years), new problems: No AC. The gym is a sauna. Put that along with it's poor-to-non-existent ventilation and you have an incubator of sick brewing. The NEW Membership Manager, who is suppose to sell me on stuff, blew generic smoke up my ass. He told me that they were putting in portable AC units. Yes. They were. And they were not working.
1 Star for being convenient to my apt.
