216 reviews for 24 Hour Fitness
This is an update of my 2005 review. I suppose 4 years is enough.
I'm more and more impressed with this place, and not for the equipment (they took over a month to get replacement 25 lb weights once) but the people.
I don't know what it is about this location, but I have gotten more workout tips, given more workout advice, gotten more people willing to ask for or provide a spot at THIS 24 hour fitness than all the others in the city combined.
People even bring their own equipment to this place. Some stuff I've never seen before. And most are amped to show you the ropes (in some cases, literally).
the guys who hit this place up are there to work out, nothing fancy, just work out. We all have our routines. You don't see a lot of people resting on benches between sets. Few waterbuffalos at the fountains. And helpful staff.
Favorite thing about this place is that they make an announcement at peak hours to have all staff re-rack weights and plates. It's in code, but it's obvious. and guess what, they ACTUALLY DO IT. I've never seen this sort of collective effort at a gym before. And it's refreshing.
Sadly, they don't have any medicine balls floating around anymore or a bosu ball, but there are usually enough mats and room to do abs and stuff.
There is tons of free parking (although it can fill up in the afternoon) and street parking is available.

The only good thing about this 24 location, and the only reason I find myself there occasionally, is the enclosed parking lot. During peak hours it's difficult to get a spot, but if you go at the right time it's very convenient to drive right in, park, and enter the elevator. The parking lot is also warm - during the winter you don't have to step out into the bitter cold to get to your car.
The selection of machines is limited, and the Turbo Kickboxing classes are generally more crowded than comfortable. The front desk staff is hit or miss, and the women's locker room is cramped. I do enjoy their music, and TV station selections though. Three stars for parking and a decent environment (at the right time).

If you are thinking about getting the membership because of this club is close to your place, forget about it. This gym is depressing and stinky all around. The locker rooms and restrooms are the worst. Staff is exactly the same or worse.
The only good thing of the gym is the pool. The only bad thing about it is that is has no water but 100% chlorine and you won't be able to use it anyway, since it is always really crowded.
I only go to 24 Hour on Ocean because I live close by and because it's cheap - $50/year for me.
Let's just say that if I was recession proof, I'd probably stay away from this place for the following reasons:
1. 1/3 of the cardio machines are usually broken.
2. Patrons are sweaty and sometimes leave a strange, unidentifiable film on the handlebars of the elliptical machine.
3. The prison basketball that goes on in the court.
4. The naked ladies that use the hand dryer as a full body dryer.
One star for 1 TKB class on Saturdays - I do really like Andre, who always has packed back to back classes. He's a fantastic instructor, I just wish 24 Hour gave him more flexibility to mix up the routines.
They were so deceptive over the phone and kept trying so hard to get me to come in for a visit to the club. I went to their club once over a year ago, and they were not very well organized and I didn't feel it was the cleanest gym I've been to. But what did it for me is that they stopped staying open 24 hours 7 days a week. Why call it 24hr Fitness then???
I had to ask around but I found out that they try very hard to sell you on their three year $640 membership. If you go month to month, God help you! It's about $70 and that's not including all the fees they get you with in the beginning.
Still Yucky......
Aren't the employees at this facility not ashamed of this environment ? Filthy. Smelly. Very thrid world.
The manager doesn't seem to care. You see him just walsking around. Working out. On the phone. Never seen him inspect or at least have the staff clean something up. Just plain LAZY. Scary to think how his apartment might look like.
There is always something broken everyday. Sauna, equipment, showers, bathrooms, lockers. The weights are all over the place and pose a hazard.
It is like an abandoned public facility where nobody is in charge. Yet the continue to solicit memberships........
This facility needs to be closed.

This place is a gym, not a spa! Its not bad at all and I really like that they have free garage parking. The turnover at this place is good so you'll always get to the equipment you want.
It's a gym. It's not that bad, but it's not that great. Go at the right time and you wont have to wait. It does it's job and that's about it. What more do you really need to know about a gym?
A review of the free weights area and men's locker room.
The dumbbell rack area is a total mess. Actually, the whole free weights area is a mess. Dumbbells are everywhere and not placed properly. I don't see many people putting back their dumbbells, and, if they do, they place it not in numerical order. But I can't blame them for not putting it in numerical order because usually the 100 pound dumbbells are placed where the 15 pound dumbbells are supposed to be.
There also seems to be a lack of benches for flat pressing, incline pressing, and upright pressing. There are zero for decline pressing. There is one for barbell decline pressing, but this is also a sad piece of equipment. The benches are all pretty dirty with sweat stains all around the head area. When they say bring your own towel, they really mean it! I usually end up using the paper towels and the sanitary spray to clean anything I need to rest my head and back on, though.
The dumbbells are also quite dirty. They have a grimey feel to it, rather than being grippy as they should be. I also spent most of my time looking for the dumbbell weight I needed, rather than actually using them. Quite sad, indeed.
As for the weight plates, they are also everywhere. The tree weight holders don't have any of the weights on them. 5, 10, and 25 pound plates lay everywhere and people leave their weights on the barbells or machines. I have some decent etiquette though, so I put mine away as best as possible... but it's quite hard when people place the plates at the wrong places.
Now, for the men's locker room... Small and musky. Actually, the whole gym is musky. It's quite disturbing how terrible the place smells and feels. I was pretty disgusted with the whole place and wanted to shower... but the showers looked pretty gross... as well as the men staring at you as you change..........
I wouldn't recommend this place for someone who likes a clean gym and nice members.
Mannnn... this place stinks..literally. My bf and I constantly come here for their basketball court and it's not even a good one! It's tiny and dirty! Every single time we work out ,we are there for 2-3 hours, close to midnight and it's still HELLA packed like it was 6-7! My other pet peeve about this 24 hour location is: No cell phone service! WTF!? How am I going to check my social networking sites without service? GAWD! I do want to try that Pho place next door, though! Has anyone been there? LOL
Since 24 Hour Fitness is such a large venue, I will break this up into parts so you can read the category that is most relevant to you.
Parking:
Parking is extremely difficult during busy hours. There's usually a line that builds up in the parking garage . . . no joke. Luckily, I have the option of riding in my motorcycle.
Staff:
Seems like 24 Hour Fitness recruits their staff from people who worked at McDonald's or Burger King. Yes, they are not too bright. When I first signed up for a membership, I was charged twice from my checking account in the amount of almost $1,000.00. I had to go in and get this issue resolved. I must say, if you want to sign up for a membership, I recommend Max as he's probably the most dependable and responsible guy there. Plus, he's one of the few smart guys/girls that work there.
Locker Room/Bathroom:
GROSS!!! What can I say, I avoid the locker room like the plague. The locker room is disgusting as the guys just lounge around naked like it's social hour. There's this one Asian guy that sits on the bench and watches the naked guys . . . I wish I could say I was kidding. He's always there. On top of that, the bathrooms smell horrible like people urinated on the walls.
Treadmills/Stair Masters/Ellipticals:
During busy hours, you might have to wait, but no longer than 10 minutes. 90% of the people who use these machines do not wipe the sweat off after they use it. Therefore, make sure you have paper towels handy to wipe off their sweat before you hop on. Most of the equipment are pretty up to date, but they do have some "old school" machines.
Free Weight Room:
If you need to use the bench press during busy hours . . . forget about it! The weight room gets extremely busy. Most of the weights are free except the bench press. If you don't care about asking, just see if you would be able to work in with whoever is using the weights/bench. Most of the guys are really nice.
Machine Weights:
I really don't use machines unless I'm working out my triceps. I just noticed a lot of sweaty people don't wipe after they use the equipment. Just keep that in mind.
Basketball Court:
There are two half courts available and they are usually packed. The courts are in pretty good condition. If you want to play, be prepared to wait for a long time.
Spa/Jacuzzi/Pool:
One word: Cesspool.
I usually hate coming here but I had two training sessions with JC and he is AWESOME. I still don't come here to workout. Just for training sessions. So dirty here. Feels gross =( But JC Is aweseome!
This is basically a pool review. I usually go to the Van Ness 24 Hour Fitness, which has a nice enough whirlpool/sauna/steam room, but no pool.
What I want in a pool is simple: enough room to swim around in circles, not just laps, I want to be able to swim with the fishes, but warmer and inside. This pool is TINY! It's got 2 lanes and there were a minimum of 4 people in the lanes while I was there on a Sunday afternoon. I can't imagine what it looks like after work. Everyone was polite and tried to share lanes, but I couldn't let lose in the pool and take up a lot of space :(
The sauna and whirlpool were OK. Again, a smelly steamroom.
I work out here about 2 to 3 times a week if Im not running the Lake. I think the machines are in pretty good condition and its big enough to facilitate a lot of people. I like how they have the better Precore treadmills and a lot of TVs.
For all of the people who say that this place smells funny and there is a lack of ventilation... ITS A GYM! DEAL WITH IT! Man, what do you people want? Your own personal work out space with fans and vents everywhere? Just get in and get out, easy as that...
Dude, this gym is fucking GHETTOOOO. I once walked in the locker room, to find a chinese guy doing his fucking laundry in the sink. The locker rooms stink!! I hate you STINKING fucking 24! and yet I still come back here because all of my friends are asian and live in the area. If you like the asian "scene" and asian "talent", I could see how you might like this place, but seriously the place is pretty effing nasty. Also, this gym gets really really packed. Waiting in line for 20 mins for a cardio machine is so weakk! I wouldn't swim in the pool, that is just nasty. Parking can be a bitch during peak times, but atleast it's free. This 24 also has an indoor basketball court which is decent, but tiny.
Let me just say, I should have trusted the reviews on Yelp about this gym. They were sooooo accurate. Of course, giving the gym the benefit of the doubt I decided to give it a try. Bad move!
I called ahead, confirmed the hours and inquired about a day pass. I was told I could buy a day pass at any time ($15) and try out the gym. I was aware of the on-line 7 day pass for free, but was pressed for time.
I arrive at the gym at 5:15 am, yes, a.m., ready to work out and in a good mood. I was met by a surly, tired looking and obviously burnt out employee (Franco) who was not the least bit interested in my desire to purchase a pass. He promptly told me he was not able to take my money or credit card because he was unable to open the computer or register. Furthermore the manager would be there in a hour (6:30am) and I should come back.
Are you serious?? Come back?? I just got here and it's 5:30 am. I proceed to negotiate with him..."I will leave my ID and Credit Card, go workout and come back to the counter in a hour". He was not interested and would not budge. When he was done speaking to me, he summarily dismissed me with a "I'm done with this conversation, you can't go in...I'm not talking about this anymore".
Customer service, what's that? I will never go to this gym, even if they give me a 1 year FREE membership. I still can't believe I was turned away, even though I offered the employee several options to make it work for both of us.
This gym is not worth anyone's time! Trust the reviews!!
Eh. This is the one closest to my house, so I choose to go sometimes, but I much prefer the Mountain View location.
This one is fairly dirty and crowded- people aren't very attentive. The one thing I can say for it is the Yoga class I had there was good- instructor was friendly and well in tune with the class. Otherwise, probably not worth bothering unless you live super close, like me.
AWFUL! AWFUL! AFUL!!!
This gym TRIPLE charged my card, causing a series of over draft draft fees. Its been over 2 weeks of me calling every single day trying to resolve this problem. They've admitted to their mistake, and are doing little to nothing to resolve it!!! This has cost me SEVERAL HUNDRED DOLLARS. and they offered me a "free month of membership" as compensation? HA. What a joke.
Stay away people! STAY AWAY!
UPDATE 6/20/09
So I've been coming to this gym consistently for the past 2 months.
What I've noticed is that :
They've hired some new staff, the white girl who wears the denali actually says " Enjoy your workout " and she smiles and says bye when I leave! They need more staff like that.
The guys here are friendly, if you ask, they'll usually let you work in between their sets so that you can both use the machine/weights.
Benches are sometimes hard to get, which is exactly why I do my chest days during 2-4PM or 8-10PM.
Who's that guy with the black shirt/pants and beard? Told my friend he couldn't work out in jeans |:
-They need to have people wipe the mats after their classes, I was looking for a mat one time right after people finished the Pilates(I think) class, and either they were all taken or they were all covered in sweat, YUCK.
+I enjoy how the people here treat a 14 Y/O teen with much respect.
Treadmills are always awkward. Either they're all filled up and a lot of people are waiting in line, or there's like 6 open at the same time.
Oh, and I ALWAYS avoid coming here between 5-8PM. Much too filled up.

Two and a half stars, but I'll update to three because of one thing: they offer more dance classes than any 24 in the bay. Being an avid dancer, I noticed dance classes that are FUN are hard to come by at 24. I'm a big fan of Monday morning dance with Angela. She's just a do it all busy bee that not only excels in teaching basic dance, but her pilates class is pretty good. A bit intensive, but you're guaranteed to leave feeling empowered.
When I don't go for a dance class, it seems like the whole floor is chalk full of people no matter what time of day you go. Most of the time, you go into the garage with your fingers crossed in hopes that someone leaves as you go in. I remember one day, I had to wait 15 minutes just for a weight bench to open up! Nuts...
'm also not too keen on the divide in the basketball court. With two half courts, the competition is divided into the better, taller players closest to the glass, and the short scrubs towards the back. I guess there's not much one can do about it, but if you're middle skilled such as myself, where do you play?
Overall, not the worst 24 I've seen, but certainly not the best.
This is the nastiest gym I have ever been to. The pool is filled with chlorine instead of water, the showers are gross, I would recommend wearing some kind of footwear at all times. It is packed all the time, the equipment is from the 60's and they never have towels.
It's bigger than the gym on Church but it's much dirtier. My favorite are the ladies in women's locker room using hand dryers to blow-dry their hair and dry their shirts that they just washed in a gym sink. I looooove long hair all over the sink counter! The equipment is usually dirty also. The free weights don't get stacked, or get stack all out of order.
There's a 2-lane pool and a whirlpool. The extra strong smell of chlorine, low lighting, and abundance of chubby middle-aged men have been keeping me away from the pool room.
They have parking shared with Rite-Aid and it's usually full, especially between 5-8pm, expect to wait in line or drive around the block until you find something which can take as long as 30 minutes.
24 Hour Fitness is a sorry excuse for a gym. It's even sadder that there's virtually nothing else close to Outer Sunset.
I signed up for my membership over 3 years ago at this gym.
Back then it was dirty, but I dealt with it. Since Millbrae opened up a 24 hour fitness last year, I have been frequenting that location even though it costs me an extra $20 a month.
I now know why I go to Millbrae, because its way cleaner. I have been back a few times this month to the Ocean location and it is honestly really dirty. The women's locker room is more often than not, really filthy, I have to wonder what the men's locker room is like. I refuse to take a shower here.
I'll be back because of location convenience after work, but not because I really want to. yuck.
First of all, how many of us ever really get the burning desire to go work out at 2 in the morning? 3 am? 4 am? I don't think so... Charging members $39.99/month to use rusty, uncleaned equipment is outrageous and degrading. I only signed up because my friend was a member, ended up being charged for an EXTRA month because I didn't give them a 15 day notice of cancellation. This place is dirty, way too crowded, and none of the staff cares about the facility- and it clearly shows. The parking lot is ALWAYS full and Rite Aid will TOW you if you park in their half of the garage. The locker room is awful, the bathrooms are dirty.. I didn't get the memo to bring your OWN towel and soap... even finding a paper towel was too much to ask for. It smells like intense body odor.. but I guess if you get off on that, it works..
Honestly, no matter what you do... don't sign up for this gym. They treat members poorly and the price is just bizarre. I wouldn't be surprised if they have outbreaks of MRSA. Not saying they do.. but you know.
Friday: 10:30PM.
Saturday: 9:30PM.
This particular 24 Hour is packed up the wazoo both times I was here. I was on a guest pass and came here solely to play some ball.
Two half-courts = 3x3 games only. The wait isn't as long as I thought it was going to be. Courts are a little worn down and definitely dirty.
Weights and machines showed their age and use. It's all good though because it's all about function.
Final Call:
*Friendly staff - if they recognize you, probably don't have to show pass/ID
*Pick-up games are better elsewhere
*Functional enough to come back though!
I work out between 7:30-8:30AM on weekdays, alternating among the 24 Hr on Ocean, Market, and the FitLite on 24th Street. (Potrero is just kind of gross.)
During this timeframe, parking on the street along Ocean or around the corner on Dorantes is really easy. If you're done by 9AM, you don't have to feed the meter.
I usually do 30 minutes of weight-related exercise, and then 30 minutes of cardio. The weight area is moderately crowded; however, I've noticed many of the machines aren't working quite right and you're unable to adjust them, etc. The equipment is definitely older, but generally functional.
The treadmills are usually all busy, but the elliptical machines and bikes usually have some openings. The stretching area is pretty sizeable and not too crowded.
I've found staff to be decent, and the gym to be relatively clean.
Of all the 24 hour fitnesses, I have never had a more difficult experience than this one. I use to live in Sacramento and the membership was very smooth and understanding.
At this place, however, they make numerous promises to sign you up and then tell you that you're on your own when you want to cancel. The manager, Megan, was not helpful at all.
The place is overcrowded at all times and lacks the equipment that is in high demand. I wish I had checked yelp before I signed up with this branch.
Typical 24 hour fitness gym--only worse.
I've been to several 24 hour fitnesses in LA and I kind of get the sense of their standard. One 24 hour fitness gym may slightly be better than the other, depending on management, but still the facility can't get as good as the higher end gym like, say, Spectrum. After all, you get what you pay for.
I don't have a high expectation for this gym at Ocean when I go. I get used to the crowd and the wait, especially at peak hours, so I won't be complaining. And yes, it's nasty---sweat all over on the workout bench, and chewed gum on the cardio machines. I've seen it all before in other 24 hour gyms...so I wasn't too surprised.
My biggest problem for this gym though is the extremely poor ventilation. It does smell really really bad, especially in the area in front of the group activity room (the room for steps, yoga, etc). It has this really sour, sweaty and nasty smell, which has been there for forever. I've never seen any staffs or any persons cleaning up any areas in the gym at all. And so I figured the poor condition of the gym will last for a long, long time. This alone could be the reason I started thinking about going somewhere else.
For some reason I still allow them to extract $29 from my bank account each month for the privilege to suffer in this dungeon.
When one of the drinking fountains broke and was removed, I actually had a bet with one of my roommates on whether or not it would ever be replaced. Well, it was at last, but took about 3 months.
The bathrooms still often smell like piss. Seriously in a gag-worthy way.
A show that I wanted to watch was coming on while I was working out, so I asked the employee at the desk if I could use the remote to change the channel on one of the tvs. He shook his head 'no'. Wow, really? When did this start? Apparently we gym-goers aren't trusted enough to even choose what we have to stare at from our elliptical machine.
Le sigh. I am so glad for the change is season so I can exercise in the park in lieu of this joint whenever possible.

I can only assume that the reason this place is constantly packed with people is because of its convenient location. Or, those people have never been to any other gym in their lives.
Examples of this gym's extra-lameness:
Today, I counted no less than four pieces of chewed gum stuck on things inside the building... one of which was my water bottle. Ew.
I arrived at 9am for a nice, long workout, but the sign on the front desk said the women's locker room would be closed for maintenance from 10-11am. So, I tried to monitor the time carefully, a task complicated by the fact that none of the clocks in the building agree with one another.
I generally can't get the workout I want in because none of the weights are where they should be. I don't think they have anyone organizing them.
The showers still don't work and are still littered with hair clogs, empty bottles, and used maxi-pads. Yes... used maxi-pads.
This last one makes me wonder if it's not partially the crazies visiting thing gym that make it so nasty. I mean, come on. Leaving your used maxi-pads in the shower? Who DOES that?!

I call this gym "24 Hour OPP," as in every time I go, there are DISGUSTING PILES of OTHER PEOPLES PUBES everywhere! Do they EVER clean this place? IT IS SO GROSS! Half or more of the cardio machines are almost always broken. There is usually a not-so-thin, glistening layer of sweat on whatever machine I want to use- has no one heard of using a towel?
The last time I was there, I was doing a work out by myself in the all purpose room. I try to never make eye contact with ANYONE while I am there. Some freak came over, started critiquing my "plank" position, then actually grabbed my hips without asking me! GROSS! STAY FAR, FAR AWAY!!
I would give negative stars if I could
Whoever runs this placed must be a complete tool, luckily he proudly has his picture at the front desk so we can all see who this incompetent person is.
The staff upfront are rude, mostly the high school girls working up there. I asked a question about a spin class and felt like I was interrupting their busy day swiping cards.
I kid you not when I say that there has been a broken water fountain there for over 1 month (they have a red towel over the broken pipe, and a blue bucket to catch dripping water). You would think that with all the memberships they crank out (hence the overcrowededness) they would be able to pay for something so essential to a gym.
I think there are about 12-15 treadmills, and everytime there are ALWAYS at least 2 broken ones. But, one time there were 5 with the out of order sign on.and like 10 people waiting in line -- ridiculious!!! They have eliptical machines with rust on the joints of some of them, which really defeats the whole purpose. This place is gym hell, and counterproductive to any fitness regime.
There are other nice 24 hours in the city, but this is the only one convienient to my house. However, it happens to be the shittiest gym I have ever been to in my life. I am going to start circuit training, and I know it will be impossible to accomplish at this dump.
I am cancelling my membership, the management of the ocean 24 should be embarassed and fired. What would their corporate office say if they went there? In fact, if people call and complain, I'm sure change might happen.
24 hour fitness on ocean avenue really is not as bad as everyone makes it out to be. MOST of the staff is friendly, and the equipment is fairly new. There are so many people that go to this gym, of course the machines are going to be a little beat up..
here are my pros and cons about the place..
cons: parking CAN be a little crazy, but hey, in san francisco, free parking is a luxury that we should all appreciate. people here do not re-rack their weights. pretty dirty. oftentimes paper towel dispensers are empty. their cardio equipment is a little beat up.
pros: free parking, friendly staff, inexpensive membership, tvs, music, showers. enough room, heavy enough weights.
you just have to be selective about the time you come in
If I viewed my body as a temple, here's what I would see:
-- a bright neon "Open" sign at the entrance (like the ones of my numerous 24 hour eateries).
-- a couple of shrines dedicated to my gluttonous enjoyment of beef and dessert.
-- a bar in the back that served Hangar One Vodka and St. George Whiskey as well as having Kona Brewery's Pipeline Porter on tap.
-- the walls would be draped with drink, dinner, and dessert menus with highlighted items indicating what I recommend.
-- a souvenir shop that sold t-shirts with my picture saying "Me Love Food and Drink."
-- and at the spiritual marshmallow center of my temple, there would be a banner that read: Eat, Drink, and Be Merry. Repeat as needed.
Is it just me or does my temple look more like an amusement park?
It's time to close this place down for some serious renovations.
I'm looking to improve my place with a little help from 24 Hour Fitness.
I like this location mostly because it's a single floor with a lot of treadmill-type machines. Parking can be tricky but still manageable.
What I really appreciate is I'm usually in and out of there in about an hour -- my ideal kinda workout.
I can't wait to see how my temple is doing in six months from now.
Do I hate this gym... No
Do I love it... No
Why do I come here you ask? because this gym is full of college students. I come in the mornings at 8. unlike others gyms this place is not packed. I can always get a bench, weights, and aerobic machines I want. No wait. I cant say the same for other 24hrs in the city.
Yes its true, a lot of things break here.... and they stay broken.... for a long time. Sometimes its not so clean. Mostly the staff is friendly though. This isnt as bad a gym as people make it out to be. Its ok. Ive been to worse gyms and better.
Just when I thought the Richmond facility couldn't get any worse, this one takes over the throne.
24 Hour Fitness on Ocean Ave makes Richmond look like the rich man's gym. This place is similar but way smaller, way mustier, and NO parking.
Its a pain in the ass just to get to and from here. The parking lot is shared with Rite Aid and its ALWAYS packed. Dont even bother driving into it unless you go at weird hours. The only other options are to park up nearby residential hills. Did I mention the traffic here sucks? Ocean Ave has to be the one of worst places to open up a gym. Just to get out of here and back on the main street is a pain in the ass.
Inside the gym: Tiny and PACKED. Everything single cardio machine is always taken. The only other ones that arent taken are down for maintenance! The weights are all misplaced but I expect that now from 24 Hour because people are so uncivilized. And of course, there are the occasional douches that need to grunt inexplicably loud while bench pressing.
It has a basketball court but its downsized to 2 dinky half courts. What a crappy deal! Games can only consist of 3 on 3's.
Think about it this way: 24 Hour Fitness on Ocean is like any other facility except that its half as big and twice as crappy!
This place is like trying to work out in a comical representation of what a bad gym is like. You'll have plenty of time to stretch those calfs as you wait for a machine to open up! And when one does, it's probably because it just broke! Rest assured that it will stay that way, in a memorial style, for a while. Flowers at its feet. No one seems to wipe down a machine either, so it's Mad Max: Beyond GrossSweatDome.
