The team that works here are super nice and courteous.

The gym is small but not tiny. Plenty of equipment & full length heated lap pool. Lockers & bathroom are clean!
    Nice local place to workout!

    No complaints here!

I dont get the negative reviews. Don't complain about having to park far, you're here to work out. Don't complain about it being dirty (it's not), when you're here to sweat.

The machines work, plenty of space, big locker room, friendly staff. No problem, works for me.

    Take a shower, germophobes.

What is up with the gyms in San Diego? I've been to LA Fitnesses and 24 Hour fitness and they just seem to be a level lower than other areas I have been in. This 24 is considered a sport, but it's definitely small for a sport. It has many cardio machines and weights and everything, but it's just very cramped.

There are no basketball courts and all of the machines are just so squished together. However, they still have pretty much everything I need for a gym, so it will make do for now since it's one of the only gyms in La Mesa area.

I don't understand all the ultra-negative reviews.  Some of these reviewers make it sound  as if they are entering a prison yard to workout.

This is my regular club and I've been going here for about 2 and 1/2 years. I usually try to avoid peak times just so I don't have to worry about waiting for equipment, so I usually show up during the early afternoon or late at night.  The staff has always been nice and respectful to me and I've never had an issue.

The equipment for the most part is functional with the exceptional out of service sign on one or two machines, but usually they are fixed within a/the week.  The biggest offender of hardware malfunction is the cardio machines (treadmills etc.) but for the sheer amount of volume those things see, I'm surprised they aren't completely demolished.  Populated treadmills have kept me from doing cardio far more than non-functional ones have.

As for cleanliness, yeah it can be a little messy just due to a few irresponsible people not cleaning up after themselves, sadly this happens everywhere, and I guess they just need to have the staff walk the floor a little more often to clean it up.  Other than that I usually am too busy getting dirt with a workout to worry about dust or a little dirt on the floor, I'm pouring sweat anyway so at that point, until I hit a shower cleanliness is not really a factor.  Sometimes you end up next to someone who just doesn't understand the concept of deodorant but I don't think that is specific to this gym only.

They have a pool but there are usually a lot of seniors wading back and forth during the day and it usually occupied, so I avoid it unless I feel the urge to swim late at night when nobody is in it.

Parking is kind of an issue, but only when it gets really busy, then there is nowhere to park, there might be a lot to park in further up the street but I honestly haven't checked, the below parking lot usually fills up pretty quick during the day since there are other businesses there.

Honestly I like this gym because it's local and it has all the equipment I need to get a great workout going.  I'm sure there are better ones but honestly, I'm very comfortable working out here and due to its ideal location I don't feel inclined the need to venture further out when everything I need is right here.

Nice facility.  I'm a little bit of a germaphobe, and would like to see more disinfectant spray bottles, but the one's they have work.

Equipment all over the place.  Weights, bikes, steppers, more.  No pool.

when people complain about "old" equipment it really gets on my nerves. The facts are, (that is if you are an avid gym goer and have been one for years) most of the really good machenes and free weights have been tossed out due to there fear of hurting people. (take gravity boots for example). thats why you see all these new things come out and personal trainers teaching people to roll on a roller like they are dough needing to be cut and baked.

old is one thing, but not being able to do its job are two different things.. i just get a little teed off when a group of people complain about something like this and people have to come up with new and "inventive" ways to get things done.... bring back gravity boots and that machene i could sit down in and twist my top half of my torsoe.

i have been to mostly all of the 24hrs around this area and there are 3 i go to on a regular basis. it is this one, the colege grove location and the one on terra del rey in chula vista. when it comes to the "type" of equipment and what i want to work on i pick one of the 3. also if you play basket ball the style of game play is different from college grove and chula vista.

the parking lot is small.... that is why they have an over flow parking lot as well

there is always a guy there cleaning stuff, when most gyms they have a group come in at like 4am

the water fountain is cold (esp the new one), when most gyms have just warm ones

i love 24 hr gyms in general because with everything in my life i have to plan, it is nice to know i do not have to plan my work out time as well.

the only complaints i have about this gym is the channels they have in the front entrance, every one of them is either news or sports, the fans are snuggled up against you when you are jogging (just move them off a little, it gets a little chilly some times with the ac), and kick all those people that want to get on a tred mill beside me in the mid day and walk really slow with no incline, out and tell them there is a mall across the street they could walk at, or walk at there home in circles around a couce or something (who does that)

This 24 hour is "decent" compared to a few others in San Diego.I go here because it's near my house and the mission valley location isn't offering the classes I want that day. The gym itself is pretty small...and should really be considered an active instead of a sport. The ceiling is very low so the air circulation is not very good. The parking lot is small so peak hours are a little hard to find parking sometimes. The room for group classes is small too. I noticed that they don't hand out passes prior to the class to make sure the room does not get filled past capacity. This isn't safe because the ZUMBA class I attended felt like it was a major assembly because there was so many people it it.

I've tried the Advanced Step with Paco and this class description was not kidding when they say ADVANCED STEP! Before coming, I was thinking they meant high intensity/impact step workout, but it's more of a cross between a dance class and a step class. The moves are not challenging, but the routines are VERY complex. The instructor is very nice and cool but it's the type of class you have to attend for weeks before it becomes close to feeling natural. I am a dancer so picking up choreograph comes pretty easy for me, but my first day at this class left my mind spinning HAHA The teacher goes over like 5 mini routines which has many steps in it and then at the end of the class you put all 5 routines together as one. It definitely seems like a great workout and I really commend Paco's creativity, but this is a major heads up for any first timers to his class!

I also gave Zumba a try on Tuesday night. It was a REALLY packed class and was so much fun. I've tried Zumba at a different gym before when Zumba was new and wasn't feeling the cheesy moves, but the teacher on Tuesday has sexy and fun moves where you don't feel ridiculous about what you're doing haha it's also a great workout! I highly recommend it!

Overall this gym is alright, but not the best 24 hour to go to.

i seriously don't understand the bad reviews ... it's a gym with equipment that works and a very friendly staff ... i swim a lot and the pool is never overly crowded and most people don't mind sharing a lane when it is.  all the equipment i've used has worked perfectly fine. the daycare facility is nice as well.

Equipment well maintained, clean facility and staff have done a good job recently of being more engaged and friendly. :) It's an older "Active" club and would be even better if they at least offered free wifi like the Carlsbad location, for example. Being right on the Green Line, it's an awesome location, too!

I work out here because its close to my office. Thing I don't understand is that 24 hour has so many nice clubs and this has got to be the worst that I've been too. All that money they have, they can fix this one up? the men's locker room is DISGUSTING. And old dudes have not mastered the wrap the towel around my waste technique yet. The club stinks pretty bad too. Come on 24 fix it up

Not a bad gym, but definitely not great. It's small, the equipment is old, and the parking lot is small and difficult to maneuver in - and many patrons drive big lifted trucks that they double park. If you want to lift weights or do cardio, this gym is sufficient. I go there 4-5 days a week and the only things I'm disappointed by are the crappy indoor pool (I'm a swimmer, so I'm kind of a pool snob) the crappy run-down spin bikes, and the overcrowding. However, I get a good workout in so I can't complain too much.
Oh, and many other yelpers have noted the low ceilings above the stair masters - I am 5'9" and occasionally hit my head if I'm not careful. Anyone taller should beware!

A quarter of the machines don't work like they are supposed to. The place is clean and the staff at the counter has gotten better over the years. My only problem is the machines are all outdated. They won't go as fast as you want and sometimes they just stop working all together. I would think that it would be as nice as the santee location, or even the el cajon location on main street.

This place was always crowded, yet all of the equipment was available.  It was definitely weird coming here because it looked so crowded but there was always room to work out on anything you wanted.

I did a lot of circuit training here and used one of their newes torture machines on my legs, needless to say it helped my cardio.

And the coed sauna?  Well, more cougars than anything were in there and yes, they were on the prowl.  I loved going there because these women had no shame and gave you the lustful look with their too short shorts and too low cut tops.

Really, 24 hour, you need to update your equipment.

While prepping to taking a class here, I, and those unfortunately behind or around me, were plastered by a cloud of dust each time a weight was placed on the barbell! Eek!

If that is not a sign for new equipment or displays the cleanliness of your location I don't know what will!

The only reason I go to this gym is because it is close to my work and offers a couple of classes that I like.

My biggest gripe is the ladies locker room...it is DISGUSTING!! I feel dirtier as I shower and I wear sandals and try my darnest not to touch anything! The floors are awful and it smells nasty...if I could wear nose plugs I would.

I am only going to this gym until April when the new Total Women's Gym & Spa opens up in Mission Valley by my house. I will forgo lunch workouts once I cancel this membership...and will be happy to do it!!

I guess you get what you pay for...but you would think they could make a little more of an effort. I used to go to this gym when I was in high school and that was 10 years ago...the locker room has never once been remodeled since then.

I think that 24 Hour Fitness all together sucks!

Even though this location needs a major overhaul, the bright spot this morning was the sub, Rock.  He made a point of walking around the gym, making friendly chit chat w/quite a few members and seeing if everyone was doing alright.  As the cleaning crew came in, he made sure to make contact w/them.  It was great to see that Rock went the extra step to oversee what was going on in the gym even though he was a sub.  It makes a difference between someone like Rock and other persons that just sit behind the desk reading or . . .
The music really needs to be turned down a notch or two at this gym early in the a.m. (4am-6am) as it is difficult to hear your own music.

The gym is a dungeon.  It's small, dirty and not staffed too well.  The downstairs has the usual pool, sauna, jacuzzi.  Unfortunately, if you go at the wrong time (i.e. 5 pm) you will be bombarded by fat hairy naked men in the locker room that don't understand what a towel is for.  For f**k sakes, please stop standing on the scale wet...and naked.

Other than that, it's a gym.  Go there to WORK OUT not to socialize...you're interrupting my set.  Oh and I agree with the guys on this one from YELP...It's cougarville.

    Eh...  Just eh...

I went to this location this morning because I was meeting a friend and it was convenient for him.  In general there weren't a lot of issues... but here we go.

-Front Counter Guy - I have never been here before... when I ask where the locker room is (In the dungeon of the building btw...) don't act like raising your arm to point is such a chore.
-Organization - Unless you are on the front row of machines, good luck watching the news or any other tv during your workout.
-Cleanliness - The locker rooms are not horrible, but it is evident they do not get cleaned often enough.

Like I said, it isn't the worst location... BUT if you have another location closer I would recommend trying that one first.

Overall it worked well for what me and my wife were looking for, a clean and nice gym that was close to our house. However,  like everything in La Mesa it is on the small side. This wasn't a problem for me since I mostly went late at night after work (I taught mathematics at Grossmont college) when nobody was really there. I think that if I went at a different time I wouldn't be as happy with my experience. YMMV.

First of all, the parking situation here SUCKS!  It didn't take long to find a spot since I came pretty late in the evening, but the spots were soooo small and hard to get in/out of (even in my teeny little VW Beetle).

Once inside the building, I found the layout to be pretty confusing - I wandered around for quite a while before I was able to locate the locker room...

I don't like doing the typical workout machine things, so I only come for the classes.  I took Amp'd Abs with a frickin' CRAZY guy named Paco... and let me just say, 30 minutes is WAAAY too long to do ab stuff!  Now I know why most of those classes are only 15 minutes...

Next was supposed to be the "24Dance" class, which I was excited about... but then some guy showed up to teach the "Hip Hop" class.  There were only 6 of us there, so I don't know if the regular class had been canceled and this guy was just filling in... but it was disappointing because I have done the Hip Hop class before and was wanting to try something different.  It was still pretty fun, though.  I don't remember the guy's name, but he was very good at breaking down the routine to ensure that everyone knew what they were doing.  And I am the most "un-funky" whitest ballerina you have ever seen, so you know that when I get moved to the front of the class because I "get it", the teacher must be doing a good job! :-/

Overall this club is pretty good. It's got a pool,  some great work out equipment, and lots of classes. My personal trainer Godfrey deserves five stars. He is super patient and always makes sure I'm using the equipment properly to get the most out of the work out. Overall, the staff are friendly and courteous, but the parking is a nightmare. They do have an "overflow" lot up the hill, but I've heard from other gym members that cars are frequently broken into because that lot is remote, isolated, and equipped with poor lighting.

This is the closest 24 hour fitness to my place. The staff is friendly but I try to avoid going here whenever possible. It's not the gym or the staff but the people that go there. It's always hard to get a bench or on a pulley machine because people take forever on them. They take a ton of time in between sets to flex and pose in front of the mirror so it takes twice as long to finish at the gym.

Why is this the worst 24hr in east county but in the nicest east county community? I don't understand why it's such a run down gym.. Not run down but just not nice. I live right by here and never go. When I lived in Santee I was at that town center location daily. This one has a bad parking lot set up, ok i'll get over it. But can't they make the parking lot a little brighter? So creepy at night. The ceilings are so low inside, I'm 5'3 and almost hit my head on the ceiling when I do the stair climber. I guess the taller people are screwed or just need to stay low on the machine. This place just needs some simple upgrading at the least to make it a little more pleasant, would help a lot.

This is where you go if you want to get a decent workout while trying to get a date. Nothing too serious is going on here, and the atmosphere isn't conducive for a hard-core workout. If you're female or a feminine looking male prepare to be hit on and assaulted by the personal trainers, who roam the gym with lust-filled eyes. Downstairs you'll find a pool, sauna, steam room and jacuzzi, which is the highlight of this facility. Sometimes late at night middle-aged couples will show up in the jacuzzi, drunk off champagne, laughing hysterically at the world.

This gym is adequate. There's lots of equipment, a pool, jacuzzi if you are into that - they appear clean, but I don't use them. Count on it being busy enough on weekday nights that you might have trouble getting on a treadmill or other aerobic machines even though they are ample in supply. Also note that it gets stuffy, particularly when crowded on those weekday nights. Overall the gym is not "dirty", but it ain't the cleanest place in the world either. The men's bathroom generally isn't that great for cleanliness. This building was once a bank, so the inside feels a bit confined due to low ceilings and smaller spaces. Despite all this, I've been going there for years because it is close to where I live and most gyms seem to have at least some of the same types of problems. On weekends generally I go to the Mission Valley or Santee 24 hour fitness gyms which are a bit nicer.

so i decided to join a gym.  the fact that my work will give us money back for gym fees, i couldn't resist.

my roommate started working out here as it is just a few minutes from our place.  i joined a couple weeks later.

i took a star away because the general cleanliness of the place could improve.  replace old stuff, scrub the pool every so often.  the equipment isn't that bad though.

i usually end up there after i am off work, so 9p-11p ish, which i like, because i don't like people.  it's not too crowded at that hour of night.  right after most jobs get out there are a lot of people there and parking can be not so fun.

i got the jump start trainer program thing since i've never worked out in my life ever, and my trainer rocks.  she calls me granola girl because i like organic foods.  and she said i was chilligans island when my roommate was stressing about her heart rate (mine pretty low and hers, she feels, is high).  puns always win me over.  A+ for her.

there are cute people around, and i guess some people would use it to troll the scene.  personally, i think flirting when my face is red as a tomato, panting and feeling quite gross, um, yeah, no.

what is cool is that i actually enjoy working out.

One of the few 24 hour fitness in San Diego area with a pool.  It's on my way to work, so I frequent it often.  The pool is indoors, which is nice for cold mornings, but not so nice on hot afternoons, where the profuse smell of chlorine is almost unbearable.  Writing this review, I swam in the pool five hours ago & after a shower, I can still smell chlorine.  Another downside is all the walkers that arrive an hour before their aqua fitness class. Most are cordial, but don't adhere to the 30 minute swim time while people are waiting, and there are a few snarky old ladies who won't even share the lane b/c they don't want to get their hair wet. I try to get there extra early to avoid these people - if you want to use the pool for a decent swim workout, I would advise you to, as well.

Staff is friendly. Haven't used the upstairs gym area that much.

Just barely enough equipment to satisfy; however, Monday nights can get a little frustrating when looking for a treadmill or cross training machine.  Everything you need for you exercising pleasure, can be found here around the corner from Grossmont Center.  Only sad thing is that the exercise machines facing Fletcher Pkwy have a nice view but not for long.  There is a building in construction that will crap out the view.

My gym membership is so cheap so I keep coming back but the gym is dirty..period. Too many machines broken at once. One of the machines had a piece missing for over a year. Staff too young and does not seem to give a hoot about concerns that are expressed. Its good that we here in La Mesa have Lake Murray and Cowles mountain as other options. I just wish 24 Hour would get it together and make the gym more appealing.

I do not recommend 24 hr fitness at all!!! Not unless you don't mind getting phone calls at 6am! Their call center is located in the Caribbean and have called me for the 3rd day in a row between 6:30 am and 7 am. My husband and I will be going and canceling our membership and not recommending this gym to our friends or family. Their prices are not even that great either. There are plenty of other gyms in San Diego that have better equipment and better prices!

For the people saying the lot is always full there is 2 lots I have only seen both lots full once but by time i got out there was a lot of empty spots. The second lot is on the same side of the road just up the hill from the 1st one. And you are going to get the naked old dudes in any gym you go in. I'm not sure what their deal is but they are in every type of gym in every state. You only see them in the locker room never out on the floor and they are walking around naked carrying the towel.
I gave it 3 stars because it needs more free weights in the 15-30 pound area there is only one set of each and they are the more popular sets but 2 of 35+? It is also time to replace or fix some of the ellipticals. This is the 1st gym I have been in without a towel service.
Overall the staff is nice and they have a varity of machines I would just like to see more of the more popular ones, but they are limited by the space in this location.
