I haven't experienced this place on a weekend, but I can imagine that it's as crowded as the other reviews say. I find that this is a beautiful after-work weekday place to go, and suggest the outdoor rooftop rather than staying inside in the lounge, which is a bit kitschy, but I'll still take it with its large window views.
The drinks are overpriced, but that's really to be expected from the location and view. We ordered the Veal and Pork Meatballs (simmered in curry sauce). They were delicious. The sauce is like a mix between curry and marinara, so the flavors are kind of layered. Mm! We ended up asking for spoons to polish off the sauce. (Faux pas? Who cares as long as it gets in my tummy.) The fries were crispy, but not overcooked, just the way that I like them.
The bathrooms (at least for the rooftop) kind of crack me up. They're like airplane bathrooms, but very efficient in that they are co-ed, so you never get lines, etc.
Outside, they provide red robes and blankets to beat the cold, but if you can score a seat next to one of the heaters, you're set. ((Hopefully they will change out their fall decorations soon because there's a couple of rotting gourds. And whomever thought to decorate the place with dried corn stalks, hay, and real fire in lamps is just asking for trouble. I really was just waiting for my girlfriend to drop her cig on accident and watch the flames go up.))
Just remember that you're paying for the view. If you have out-of-town, first-time-to-NY visitors, I'd definitely recommend 230 Fifth. Heck... if you just feel like enjoying a nice view, I'd recommend it.
I think this is one of the biggest rooftop bars in New York. There is a regular bar/lounge area downstairs. Although this bar is not my scene, it is a good place to take friends who want a touristy night out in Manhattan. The view is beautiful and on weekends it's packed full of people.
The regular bar lounge is very cheesy looking, plush velvet seating, and hardly any area to dance even though there is blaring pop music. If it's not rooftop weather, skip this place entirely.
The door staff is strict about dress codes, especially for guys so don't even try getting in with sneakers.
I personally don't like this place, but I'm not going to throw too much hate because I can see people from out of town enjoying it. There's no cover & the view is really nice so you have nothing to lose except the time you spent waiting in line to get in.
Except for the rooftop of the Met, which is hard to compete with, 230 5th has one of the best views of any rooftop bar in the city. That being said, in the summertime, it gets super-crowded so definitely try to reserve one of the tables on the rooftop if you can.
For a more low-key time, the multiple lounge rooms downstairs are comfy and the music is cool. (I appreciate places that don't play ear-numbing hip-hop or Top 40 garbage.) I believe the chef here is the same one who created the Fatty Crab menu because the food is excellent, especially the sea bass over rice.
Love this place, no BS at the door, great views of the city, spacious and reasonable prices. For more reviews visit my blog.
Quite possibly the biggest rooftop bar/lounge in New York. Its massive and the view is amazing. If you ever wanna get laid, take your girl here, then ditch her and hire a hooker.
I like it here when its not too crowded. First time I came, it was packed, could barely walk around on the rooftop. The lounge area downstairs also has a great ambiance. Huge windows overlooking the city with a lot of seats and a dance floor in the middle. They play a lot of pop joints here. But I seem to remember a lot of pink. Pink lighting, pink furniture. The last time I came here, it was a bit colder and misty outside so the place was semi-empty. Not a ghost town by any means but definitely not even half full. I enjoyed it a lot more.
The main draw-back of this lounge is that its expensive. Great view and a good atmosphere. Just sneak some alcohol in, they won't check your anus at the door so don't worry. Oh and free coat check.
Completely New York -y and an amazing place to take visitors. I think it's crazy that you can just walk up and go on in. We sat basking in the artificial glow of the skyline basically alone, sipping our bevvys and smoking cigars (well, I didn't but my companions did).
Kind of has a slight tackiness, that I can't put my finger on, but whatever. The view is amazing.
Some times you just need a plan C. 230 Fifth was our plan C Friday and third is always the charm. Perhaps it was the weather Friday night (light mist), but there were no lines and no hassle at all. Took the elevator straight up to the top floor and proceeded to the rooftop area. There are plenty of seats with waiter service on the rooftop and of course the star of it all is the spectacular view. After a long night, we settled in, ordered our drinks and munchies and chilled the night away.
The weather wasn't particularly cooperating that night, so we migrated down to the lounge area. It's very spacious with lounging area all over with a big open space in the middle. Music was popping and folks were dancing, ya know, the usual scene. While this might not be the hottest spot in the city (what is?), it was still a pretty cool spot to chill.
Ok, I have never lived in NYC, so I can't say how it actually compares to most of the place. However, when I walk onto a rooftop balcony and I instantly think I am in a scene from "Eyes Wide Shut" I have to say that I am impressed. It was a chilly night and I got to wear a red snuggie and match all of the cool cats around me. The view was amazing and the hot cider was perfect. Yes, those dang heat lamps are killing our planet, but they felt so good! Loved the loung-y atmosphere and the red glow all around. I would go back in a heartbeat.
This is the tourist must go place.
Meaning basically if you just moved into the city for the first time I'm sure you will be going here. its a big rooftop bar/lounge with pretty cute bar tenders and you basically just sit around. You can see a pretty straight view of the empire state building and all the random plants and lighting they put up on the roof.
In the summer it gets ridiculous since normally you can just walk in the building, take the elevator up, and sit around with your friends after work. In the summer it is filled with tourist and the line goes all the way around the block and they start asking for bottle service which is ridiculous. Its the biggest turn off to locals and they end up going else where while you will be stuck on a roof with really loud picturing taking tourist. Thus I would avoid it if you can when it looks like its packed.
Free admission, free coat check and free night view of NYC. I like this place although the drinks here are a bit expensive.
Music here is more chill and loungy. I like coming here to hang with friends on a low key night.
So I am reading these reviews and I am not sure what is going on. I came here for my friends company party last night and the place was amazing. I am not sure if they are reviewing the same area that I witnessed. I was only up on the top floor and roof top deck - which was sectioned off for the private party. The top floor was filled with amazing decor - tons of swanky lounge areas. The bar was of course fully stocked and there was appetizers floating around. The food was pretty good - we had pigs in a blanket, mini hamburgers, shrimp tempura, pizza's made with truffle sauce and a couple of other things that I didn't get to try. The roof top deck had an amazing view - but it was really really cold out - good thing they had nice plush red robes for people to put on. They sure did think of everything!
Nice, but not amazing for some reason. The decor on the inside is trying to be modern, but kinda ends up looking like some low budget drug dealers house in the 80's.
The drinks were no bueno also, i ordered a martini and it came in a plastic martini glass with tons of scratches on it. ehhh wtf? if I'm paying 16 bones for a drink, the whole package better be amazing! not to mention the drink tasted like juice.
now don't get me wrong, this place definitely delivers on the view once you're on the rooftop. you get a straight shot of the empire state building.
oh and i love how they give you big red robes with hoods whenever the weather isn't so pleasant.
So.....not........my........type......of.....place .
Yes it has breathtaking views of the Empire State building (an absolutely stunning sight on a clear night), and sure, the music's pretty good and the people are all interesting and beautiful, and the drinks are great..but this is such a "cool kid" scene. This is the type of place I would of dreamed to have been invited to..oh I dunno, when I was 20 and wanted to fit in with the cool kids....
I don't give a shit about that anymore. I wanna hang out with my fellow lame hot messes and make fun of the cool kids.
When the weather is so-so like right now (windy and cold)...it's OK to come to the rooftop. I promise!!! They give you lil red snuggie robes that keep you warm, along with turning on the heat lamps. It's pretty funny to see so many adults wearing red robes (kinda makes you think everyone belongs to a cult). That was my creepy thought of the day. I'll keep that to a minimum. Anyway, another plus about this place is that when the waitress accidently spilled a drink on me, the manager quickly came over and said to bring the dry cleaning receipt and he would cover the cost. AWESOME.

Review on the rooftop:
Expensive but great view of the Empire State Bldg. Mixed drinks cost $15.… Read more »
A few years ago, it used to be a good place to hang out with friends. Now it became overcrowded with tourists and out of town-ers who think they are getting "authentic" nyc experience.
The views of NYC are nice, but the drinks are very "so-so" (kind of bad to tell you the truth). Before the place used to be an upscale lounge... now when you combine it with tourists, you get this very cheesy impression of 230 5th.
Sad... Time to move on.
Nice large lounge. If I want to impress a client I may take them there. However at a networking event it doesn't quite work with the awkward seating arrangements; some of which require you to be a contortionist or maybe I am just too dang old for these places and need to keep my butt at home.
Drinks are pricey. The drink menu is quite amateur for the prices they demand. Great views, so I suppose the mark up is for the 270 degree view of Manhattan. I have never eaten here so I won't make any assumptions. I do admit that I've met some really great people here and would definitely attend another networking event. Sans loud music and just check my coat and pray with some personal training I can manage the couches. Wish me luck!
Hands down, the best view of the Empire State Building I've ever had.. Especially with that creepy fog that was lurking around the tower that night, gave me the freaking chills.
Let's get into details: the service was absolutely WACK (considering we were sitting at a table with reservation), the food was beyond crap. Really, I never knew a mini burger could be so salty and unflavored. It's a mini burger! How can one really F it up! I can't recall what the other hors d'oeuvres we ordered, but I can tell you that I remember wanting to not eat it (but we were starving so we did).
We spent the beginning of the night on the roof top but once the rain came (and no we were not game to put on those ridiculous TWILIGHT lookin' red hooded capes on) we scurried indoors. Low and behold it's a room full of grown ass people looking like a bunch of drunken college kids, or worse, high school kids pretending to be college kids. Every other fucking group was a bachelor/bachelorette party covered in boas, tiaras and glitter. No lie. Majority of the "men" looked like underage creepers and I don't think that the women that night got the memo of the chance of rain because I saw titties for days.
My experience as a whole: Saturday night at 230 was a memorable one. I've never had a server blame her other tables for her shitty service and expect us to reassure her. The view was breathtaking, the booze was overpriced, all in all I probably won't go there again.
I really fell in love with this place! Went here on Friday night with my cousin visiting from out of town. He really wanted nightlife without any obnoxiousness, so a friend suggested this place. There was no wait (went around 1-130 am), no cover, and we were ushered into an elevator and whisked away to the top floor.
The view form the rooftop bar is amazing! It was really awesome for my cousin too. Our drinks were fairly expensive, but I wasn't expecting anything cheap. It was a bit cold outside too, but they had plenty of heat lamps AND soft red fleece robes that you can bundle yourself up in. It was kind of humorous to see mid 20s-30s ish people bundled up like that.
The music inside was fun, seem like they had an 80s thing going but it was fun. The inside lounge area was also very nice- not too crowded. No one exceptionally douchey either- always a plus. Perfect for the 25+ crowd. Had a great time and will probably go back next time in the city.
Went here to amp up for a longer night and found that while the drinks were great and the atmosphere gorgeous (several views fo the Empire State and the Chrysler buildings), I still don't like paying $14 for a martini no matter how good it is. And if the DJ is going to be rocking dance tunes, I want a dance floor. This place is carpeted end to end.
There's a rooftop garden complete with snuggie esque red robes to keep you warm in the brisk Fall air, and the heat lamps do help a lot. They had it decked out in harvest fare with jumbo pumpkins and corn stalks, so kudos for decor.
People were older. The night I went (early ish on a Saturday) there was a party of Swedish married men trying to find girls to hang with. . . not my thing, but if it's yours, this may be your new fave spot.
Basically this place is cool to look at, but much like your mom's white living room, totally not functional.
Like all the other reviewers wrote, the view is beautiful!
My friends and I decided to go after having dinner, and I expected this place to be empty because it was Labor Day weekend. The lounge was empty but the rooftop was very crowded. There were tables there, but you have to reserve them. I don't know how much they cost or what but I think having a table would have made this experience a 4 star experience.
There have been reviews on here about race and clothing, but that was not an issue when I arrived (not saying that it is not an issue) There were plenty of minorities there. You should dress up, I mean that's just the nature of the party scene.
I would 100% come back here for a birthday celebration on a non busy day with a reserved table!
Good view, but it gets way too crowded. The music is umm interesting. I had a nice time on some summer evenings at the roof top having hilarious conversations with friends. I didn't have any food here but i recall the drinks being a little pricey.
A friend of a friend suggested we come here for the night. Low and behold we soon discovered their ridiculous strict dress code policy as described from their web site:
Dress Policy
Casual smart are the key words. We encourage our guests to 'dress up, not down.' Nice dress jeans, sneakers and a collared polo shirt are fine, but torn, ripped or baggy jeans and plain t-shirts are not permitted. Also not permitted are flip-flops, athletic wear (sneakers are fine), any bold or brightly colored shirts or other brightly colored or boldly striped clothing, any shirts with writing on them, and any other attire that is not in keeping with an upscale environment.
A very good friend was rejected for admission due to wearing a plain t-shirt. He inquired with the obnxious bouncer as we saw other male patrons with sloppy plain t-shirts and torn or ripped jeans who gain admission. The bouncer did not wish to continue speaking to my friend which he turned his back away as a sign the the conversation was over. What ever happened to etiquette in this day and age when communicating with someone? We turned around and walked away without ever stepping foot inside despite of admission is free for no cover charge.

Went here for the first time with a group for Halloween and had an amazing time. Crowd was fun, music was great. Drinks were expensive, yes, but the view and the atmosphere justified the price. I had an awesome time and I will definitely be back.
Went there on a Tuesday night for a friend's birthday. The weather was great so most people were on the rooftop which does have some fairly good views. The drinks are "normal Manhattan prices" at around $12-15 for standard mixers and cocktails. Don't expect anything special if you go on a normal weeknight.
Oh and ladies, the rooftop has some sort of rubber-foam-like flooring in some areas so you might get a little wobbly in your heels.
Great news. 230 Fifth serves brunch, so if you want to go there during the day, there's no need to worry about the "scene" you find at night that's described in many of the previous reviews. There's totally a mixed crowd, young and old. In fact, there was even one woman sitting alone with a newspaper. The brunch was reasonably priced, and all around decent, not pretentious with good service. Oh, and the view during the day? Still amazing!
perfect view at sunset
warm blankets
delish hot chocolate
pricey, but definitely worth trying out once
This place is enormous. It is a lounge that features Malaysian snacks and a packed rooftop bar.
I came here for an event a rep I work with and they invited my company to attend for free drinks and food!
Honestly, it's a pretty cool place. The rooftop is great, a great view of the city, and fun atmosphere. But the crowd is kind of mixed and random, some with attitude problems (snottiness). The indoor lounge looks good too. Too pricey for what it is. The drinks are really expensive but that's the norm in NYC. The price of the drinks compensates the no cover charge to get in. Great place if I go for free drinks and food. Otherwise, I think altogether I'd rather just hang out somewhere else, but it was nice to experience.
Very nice setting, decent music, interesting crowd...open all yr long =]
pretty crowded, but the view is very nice!
The drinks were weak and tasted blah. The food was mediocre and the service was very shoddy.
About the only good thing about here is the view of the city which honestly you can find in much better locales than this. You can definitely skip this place.
Scene:
Business crowd happy hour. Great views, great people.
Value:
Expensive for a plastic beer ($14). We were pitched bottle service as actually saving money, low and behold it actual would have. 2 rounds of beer for our table of 6 came out to more than the vodka.
I was pretty damn pleased after coming to this rooftop bar.
Maybe it was the jaw dropping view? The sprawling amount of seats (w/ only a few vacant)? Yummy raspberry mojitos? Crazy fun guys we met while there?
Its gotta be all of the above.
We came based on the recommendation of one of our bartenders who told us 230 Fifth would be poppin' even at 8 pm. He was right on the money.
I would love to come back here again. What a lovely place to sneak up to on a warm summer night!
Came on a rainy-but-stopped night, so everyone was pretty chill both upstairs and down. I'm not a sucker for views, but if you are, then you'll appreciate it here. Older crowd, more mature, less sleezy.
Excellent, cute, and sweet bartenders made great drinks. Extremely friendly bouncers, which was quite strange, yet refreshing. Wish they had a wine list, the place has potential.
I don't know what was going on with the music, but I was tripping out thinking I was at my cousin's wedding reception listening to 50's swing and a jump straight to "In the midnight hour...... she cried MORE MORE MOOOORE!"
-2 for the crowd, and awkwardly mixed music (1 Michael J. song is acceptable, 5 in a row is obsessive and no longer cool )
I usually don't bother with negative reviews since there are so many places to love in NYC, BUT.....this place warrants a lower rating. If you're brown and want to be rejected because of your skin color, this is a great place to go. If you're brown and like being treated like a human being, please avoid this place and tell all your friends who actually care about these things to avoid this place too.
Heard bad stories from friends, but experienced it myself when a friend had a b-day party here. White people in line breezed in without question and every brown person in line was given a "are you on the list" test. A friend of mine who actually made it in somehow came out to get us and the bouncers who saw her come out gave her a really hard time to get back in.
Anyway, just had to vent. There are plenty of friendly places in NYC for people of color (most of NY), but this ain't it.
This place is everything that is wrong with NYC nightlife. Ridiculously overpriced bottle service, check! Tired 80s-and-today-dance-hits playlist, check! Packed to the gills, check!
Two stars for a pretty impressive view and no cover charge. I can't imagine why I would go back, though.
LOVE IT!
Again, the weekend consisted of my friend's quarter of a century birthday and she wanted to go to the city.... this was our second stop (except that I left after that) and I was sooo impressed. Gorgeous view of the Empire State Bldg and the surrounding buildings, gorgeous setup of the entire rooftop, and the main room down below wasn't too shabby either. I felt like I was in Miami for a bit.... haha, okay maybe not, but the palm trees really helped!
We didn't do brucnh, we just went as a group for drinks.... Got a pitcher of the sangria for $45 and we thought itd be enough for 2 but it was enough for at least 4 people having 2 drinks each if not more! The thing was huge!!! I checked out the menu thinking I want to go back for brunch one of these days (perhaps for my own birthday next month) and the prices were quite decent. Omelettes with smoked salmon and something else were only like $14! That's how much they are here in Westchester! I was very excited to see all this! I'll have to try the food and report back!
A definite must visit if you're here in NY or in need of a great rooftop!!
230 5th is an interesting place. The crowds vary from cougars, wall street financiers, to young party goers. I love to take people from out of town to this place, because the rooftop has an absolutely gorgeous view of the Empire State building, as well as the lounge. The bottle service here is sub par, I don't really recommend it, though I do recommend that warm apple cider drinks during the winter time and any drink on the roof on a warm sunny day. Cover=Free, Guys traveling in large groups should get bottle service, or should get some dates, Ratio here is about 1:1
Being rooftop, the weather plays a huge factor on how the night will play out. Turns out the night I went was cloudy and kinda of cool for a summer night since the rain was coming in. Overall, the night view alone gives this place at least 3 stars. It's real pretty to be up there..unfortunately, there were tall trees everywhere which kinda blocked the view and made it hard to get some pics.
The food there was $$. Got 6 curry tarts/balls for like 12 bucks. Being in the city, you know you can get the street equivalent for cheaper which didn't justify the order but we were hungry...
There are lots of variety of drinks and mixes and they tastes yummy. no complaints there.
Overall, pleasant experience.
Did somebody say crowded?? This place is a madhouse on the weekends! I can't believe how many people they managed to stuff in one double decker room. The rooftop is great for those sunny days and perfect for a drink after work. But once the evening sets in, everyone (of all ages, sizes, and colors) can be found in this bar turned meat market.
I couldn't handle the crowds but I can appreciate a place that delivers an eventful evening with good house music on any given night of the week. There are always people here.
Yes, it's a beautiful place, but it is also has an extreme American Teen TV show racist theme going.
The first time I went to this place I went looking for a friend, who ended up not being there but I stayed with another friend and the place was beautiful. The reason I believe it was beautiful was probably because there was almost no one there. The weather was kind of chilly so not many people were up on the rooftop so we took advantage of that. We enjoyed the night away from everyone there that time so I decided to do it again as a surprise birthday party for my girlfriend.
After planning this for about a month, and finally getting a few people to go, we get there and half of the party is inside, and the other half includes me, my surprised girl, and four friends. Once we got to the front the bouncer explains to us, rudely, that we either have to get a table or buy an overpriced bottle starting at 250 for the cheapest one. He obviously looked at us and figured we would say no to that offer. I tried to explain to him that we were all buying drinks and probably food because it was a birthday party but he ignored me. After seeing a bunch of people going in I attempted to get the real reason out of him. I asked "is it because it is 6 of us here that we can't go in and the others are 2-3 at a time?" before I could finish I was cut off by another rude bouncer who said "we don't have to give you a reason." I attempted one more time to explain that I had more than 10 people inside and out buying drinks and I was just cut off then ignored. Of course this got me really angry and after punching the bus stop stand I decided I will never come to this place and would never recommend anyone who is not an a-hole to this place. After a while I was told that they have to meet a certain amount of minorities in this rich white kids only place, which by the way, let a bunch of obviously under aged kids in. I will never come back, and hopefully YOU wont either.
And yes, I am not white. I am Dominican.
I have mixed feelings about this place.
I came for their famous Champagne Party Brunch on the rooftop.
Let me just get the obligatory praise out of the way: YES! The rooftop is absolutely gorgeous and you'd be hard pressed to find a better view of the skyline in all of NYC. The deck itself is very beautiful, with lots of plants and lush greenery as well. It is this rooftop and this view that have people coming back.
That being said, everything else about 230 Fifth is just OK. Their seating (unless you're calling ahead and making a reservation for bottle service) is awkward. We were, literally, seated 3 inches away from the next table. And, for some reason the tables are really low, so I felt like I was all hunched over while eating.
The food itself was alright, but generally nothing special. My Mom ordered the beef rendang, which was alright if you don't take into account the one massive, honking piece of fat that they tried to pass off as meat. I ordered the oyster omelet, an alleged specialty that had a whopping total of only 5 tiny oysters in it. Both dishes were served on cheap plates, plastic plates that you'd expect to find in a cheap, Chinese food restaurant. The waitress was a ditz, and kept disappearing. Tired of waiting for her to return, we finally just got up and handed her our money and check so we could finally be on our way.
And the place is expensiveeee. Food is reasonably priced, but drinks are not. A small pitcher of sangria is $45, their cheapest bottle of champagne is $125, and regular drinks by the glass are $12. Make sure to pre-game or you'll be broke before you even get tipsy here.
Still, I'd be back because the view is breathtaking and the atmosphere is swanky. The DJ they had that afternoon was on point too. I was feeling almost every song he played and was dancing in my seat.
