there's nothing not to love about this store.  it's easily been one of my fav local produce stores for the decade i've been here & i've never had an issue with rotten fruit/bad service/long lines.

    random +'s
    - they always have an amazing tropical fruit selection
    - love their diverse cuisine, dried fruit & beans/grains, different cheeses, milk/yogurt section & everything is so well organized
    - their staff is friendly+ helpful & cashier-folks move the lines along nice & fast
    - the owners are Greek & they have the best selection of Greek cookies, oils, pastas, olives, dolmas, halva, toasts, feta, kefalograviera, total yogurt possible.

street parking is usually impossible anytime of the week, but luckily the N-Judah is just a block away & there's a Walgreens/different banks/Post Office all within a 3-block radius, which makes running errands all the more easy.

go in and stop by - Safeway ain't got nothin' on these folks!

I love me my Chinese markets: Asian produce aside (which is a necessity given the majority of what I cook), it's hard to beat the prices, especially when compared against your Safeways and Whole Foods. Convenience and efficiency usually brings me down to 99 Ranch in Daly City though, with Sunset actually being a longer drive, despite the shorter distance.

But, having found myself in the area this past weekend, my mom and I stopped in for a gander. And, holy crap, their array of produce is amazing. They carry many a thing I've never seen before in a market, or anywhere else for that matter, and not just of the Asian variety either. In addition to standard produce, they also carry a good variety of organic fare, with both being of fairly fresh quality - fresher than what 99 Ranch has to offer, I daresay.

Prices are certainly much better than what you'll find at American markets, for both standard and organic produce, though they may be a bit pricier than the equivalent down at 99 Ranch. And, sadly, they are JUST a produce market, and lack a meat section.

I still can't say how likely it is that I'll come out here often, given the difficulty in getting out here, but for those in the area, it's well worth checking out.

Okay, so I've been here a few times. Heres my rundown

+ BOMB selection of cheese.. a fatty like me likes variety
    + great strawberries from Watsonville
+ GREAT herbs mmmmm their basil is SOO good.
+ Random little candies that I impulse buy (little Greek fruit chewys are CHRONIC)
+/- Some organic produce, some not. Eh, no one is perfect
+ Produce in great condition- - - some excellent!

Conclusion: It is a tad bit pricier than other places, but definitely one of the best. I'd never feel ripped off. If your one of those people, "I've heard of this place from other's but haven't gone yet" ...... you should. It's worth it.

Passed by this place after having lunch around the area.  I was searching for Kaffir lime for my curry and tried this place.  Alas! I found them.
Checked out the place, not enough bread selection but they do have lots of great stuff  like dairy and nuts.

One of the only places in the Sunset that I know of that sells Guavas. Every now and then I have to have Guava, and this is the place I go to. There is also a very nice selection of other fresh produce. They have great sales once in a while too! Greek-family owned, and clean store!

Just a tip: the minimum for credit cards is $5. So bring some cash if you know you'll be spending less!

Great place for fresh fresh produce among other things.  They have a good selection of flours, cornmeal, etc, if you're the baking type.  I also load up on San Marzano tomatoes every time I come (cheaper than the typical specialty store).

I usually go here whenever I'm in the city, and I need to pick up some fruits and veggies before heading back to the East Bay. This is a great place for a nice variety of produce that's fresh and cheap. The staff here are also nice and friendly.

What's also great about about this place is the area. Dim sum, Asian Markets, restaurants, boba drink shops etc. The parking here does suck though, as it gets really congested. Street parking only, with metered parking in the area, though you can find regular street parking not too far away, if your lucky.

My mom and I have been coming here for years. Chris, the manager, is the sweetest guy you will ever meet, even though he always yells at me for being on my cell phone.

What i love about this place is that it's fresh, local, and affordable. not exactly an easy find in san francisco. i always need my fruit and veggie fix, and i can buy about four bags worth of produce here for about 20-30 bucks. The quality is always fantastic, the service is friendly, and the shelves/produce stands are nice and orderly (OCD bonus). Their non-produce items can get a little pricey, but i usually do that kind of shopping @ safeway. for fresh items though, this is where it's at. Support local businesses! yay.

so not only is this the best produce market on this side of town but, the folks here are honest as they come.
i was running around to multiple stores on the afternoon of a private catering event and had to make a stop here to pick up some goodies.
so just before making a final stop i noticed my iPhone was not on my hip.
without a second thought i used my FIND MY IPHONE APP on my iPad and located the unit to 22nd and Irving!
i called the store and asked about my iPhone and sure enough the honest cashier had it and put it away for me.
    OMG!
when i arrived to pick it up, they would not even take the small reward i offered to them for DOING THE RIGHT THING.
    Honest people, great produce!
    Shop here!

the variety and selection of fresh produce is by far the best in the area.
broccolini, organic beets, organic squash, and high quality dairy goods from Clover Stornetta are prime samples of goodies you can find here.
if you find a quality small business like this on a busy shopping street with at least one vegetable market on every block from 20th avenue to 25th avenue, you got to toot its horn loudly.  This is the best one by a long shot!

Ever since moving up to San Francisco, I've been just shopping at Safeway and sometimes Trader Joe's. I unfortunately became accustomed to low value produce due to the lack of quality and high prices I've had to face.... in the last few months. For example, $3.99 a pound for canteloupe? $2.99 for a pound of broccoli? 2.49 for a pound of zucchini? 3.49 for a pound of grapes? I wish I were exaggerating, but these things are pretty  much quoted from my last grocery store trip to Safeway.  Now to the part where I wish 22nd and Irving could replace all the produce sections of every Safeway in the city.

The produce is always fresh, the prices are always as low as they can be for the season, and the service makes you feel like you're shopping with family. I finally can eat the vegetables and fruits I like without worrying about breaking the bank! The supermarket is clean, orderly, well stocked and well maintained.  I feel like this place has the best prices in town, unless you fight the crowds of China town.

The only drawback is that the supermarket isn't open late into the evening and they don't sell meat. I guess I'll have to return back to safeway for those things. They don't carry too many conventional supermarket items, but for the value and quality of the produce, it's well worth a trip.

When I moved from the Richmond to the Sunset, I had to find a new produce store. Well, I've been going to the 22nd & Irving Market for a couple of years now, and I have to say, it is the best produce market I've been to in the city. The produce is always fresh, and I like that they have a lot of organic options at reasonable prices, unlike Whole Paycheck. I've never accidentally bought rotten produce there, which usually happens on occasion at other produce markets. I also like that there's no meat in the store. As much as I like raw meat being handled around fresh produce, I think it's probably more sanitary in the long run.

One of my favorite things to buy is the variety of baby mixed greens and organic baby arugula. Usually a clamshell box will set you back $6 at Safeway but here it's $2-3 a pound! Super cheap. They also usually have good specials on seasonal fruit and veggies out front. And generally, they carry most staples too: milk, butter, eggs, cheese, oil, vinegar, jam, what have you. They even have a surprising variety of dry bulk goods, everything from legumes and rice, to dried fruit and nuts.

As other reviewers have said, the one drawback is that they do close pretty early: 6:30pm. That makes it hard to pick up last minute dinner items after work. But overall, this place is really top-notch. In fact, I love it so much that it has become my primary food market. I haven't shopped at Safeway or even Trader Joe's in months!

This is an awesome produce market.  Fresh produce, reasonable prices, and parking isn't too terrible.  You can usually find something relatively quickly, although it may be a metered spot.

It's a really popular market and I've bumped into someone I know (and haven't seen in years) there almost every single time I've been here.

There's usually a line, but they move quickly and if you know what you want, you can be in and out of there before the time your quarter bought you on your parking meter has run out.

For my cheep produce in the outer sunset, this is my one stop shop. I prefer it over some of the other local produce places because they have other staples that come in handy as well.

The produce is very inexpensive and of a pretty good quality. I like the $.99 kale/collards/or chard. The fruit selection is also quite good. I was unfamiliar with all the different apples, but no more. I am always impressed by the things I find whether is be purple potatoes, bags of lychee, or a bunch of kohlrabi for $1.99.

What really sets this place apart, besides the selection of veggies, is the fact that they have a full selection of bob's red mill grains, pre filled bulk packages of nuts and snacks, hummus, tofu, amazing olives (the cured olives are rockin'), and fresh local sourdough baguettes.

While i don't find everything I need here, I get a lot. It also saves me a bunch of money, and I like saving money. Almost as much as I like fresh veggies.

I've lived in the Sunset my entire life and used to walk here with my Mom every Saturday. It wasn't my favorite thing to do. As a matter of fact I'd drag my feet walking to this place and hoped a car would hit me crossing the street. No such luck. I absolutely hated produce shopping and the misery showed in my face. I probably got yelled at more than a dozen times while my Mom picked vegetables. I didn't care that she was screaming at me in Chinese, I just piled up the sawdust with my feet and ignored her. Every trip seemed like hours, but I'm sure it was no more than 10 minutes.

Now that I'm an adult I love this place! It looks exactly the same, minus the sawdust on the floor. The produce is fresh and reasonably priced. The variety of Mediterranean items they sell is amazing. You can get all sorts of cheeses, jams, breads, nuts and cookies here. I've bought things not knowing what to do with it, but it just looked and sounded interesting and there was no harm in trying it.

I'm really glad this market has managed to stay afloat amidst all the other markets so close by.

Great place, good people, fresh produce, fair prices.  This place has been here for decades and I'm glad it's still around despite the changing flavor of the neighborhood. FRESH . . FRESH . . FRESH! I've been shopping here for years and finally decided to Yelp it.

Unlike other neighborhood produce stores, they do things that I like:

    1. It's clean, displayed nicely, well stocked and orderly.
    2. They don't sell fish and the place doesn't stink.
    3.  No flies in your face.
    4.  No cats running around.
    5.  Doesn't double as a day care center.
    6.  Signs are written in English. (Sorry, not being racist but I'm Chinese and can't read Chinese).
    7. 99 cents specials are the best!

The produce that is still good and it is a good buy at 99 cents are placed in their large vegetable bags filled to the top. Once I purchased a 99 cents special bag of potatoes, all sorts and types of potatoes and it gave me the chance to prepare the different potatoes in various dishes. A good buy! The 99 cents bag of Brussel sprouts, they were fresh but . . . well that's another story.

The turnover is high and this maintains the quality of the produce. I seldom buy the other items in the store (baklava is great however) so I can't comment on that. I came in today to purchase a few things and pick up some empty boxes. One of the guys went to the back and bingo, nice clean boxes for moving stuff.

Thank you 22nd & Irving Market. You are good neighbors!

I was pleasantly surprised yesterday when I ran in to get milk and discovered they now carry LACTOSE FREE ORGANIC MILK  :-O !!!!!

August 4, 2011 - the Lactose Free milk is gone!  Why?  I hate having diarrhea!  Soy milk is bland to me.  Wah.

The European waffles are back!  They where gone for a while.  They have syrup already in the mix so that is why the package says "ready to eat".

They accept credit/debit cards with a $5 minimum implemented just a few months ago.

Still the best produce around, wish they carried organic produce, but the produce I get here is fresh and stays fresh for a long time.

I've been a sucker too many times buying "rotting-in-the-bag" produce from Trader Joe's.  What a waste of money.  Never again, only buying from here.  Consistently good.

Thanks a lot.  Seriously, thanks in a good way.

The produce here is a really good deal, particularly compared to larger chain grocery stores. But this store really is good for just that, produce. They have a few pantry items, but no meat...so you won't do all your grocery shopping here.

You'll also want to check the quality of whatever you're buying. I picked up some cilantro that had no cilantro smell, and smelled more like parsley. I would have thought it WERE parsley had it not been shaped exactly like cilantro with a cilantro label.

This is a great stop along Irving to pick up produce while you're checking out the other markets and bakeries in the area.

This is the real deal, with a vast produce and dairy selection. The staff is knowledgeable and answers all of my questions promptly. The quality of the produce is always high.

Only one negative comment. When the bins run very low on something, say for example persimmons, they don't put the newer stuff out until all the old stuff is gone. When this occurs, as it does frequently on Sundays, you have to choose from just a few pieces. This results in a return trip the next day to select from hundreds.

Still, this is easily the best produce market in the Sunset.

In my opinion, this is the best local grocery store in the Sunset area - in terms of produce selection, cleanliness, and staff. They carry all the essentials as well as many unique products that you can't find at other markets. The owners are Greek, so naturally they offer plenty of Mediterranean/Greek foods. Like everyone else said,  they are very nice! I've been shopping here for years & they remember me and always say hello. Aside from the plentiful selection of Greek products, 22nd & Irving Market also is stocked with a large amount of Asian products, such as taro, thai basil, lotus root, & tofu. I love the variety of unique products that this market has to offer.

These are some things I frequently get here:
    -Semifreddi's croutons
-Squash selection - butternut, kabocha, & spaghetti
-Live butter letuce (with the root in tact to preserve freshness)
    -Kale
    -Fresh herbs
-Fresh fruit (aside from the basic fruit, they often sell more exotic fruit that you will not find at Safeway, such as Guava and Mangosteen)
    -Brick of Greek feta cheese
    -Medjool dates
    -Organic carrots
    -Large Hass avocados
    -Short grain brown rice
-Canned black olives, garbanzo beans, & artichokes
-Jarred artichoke pesto dip (SOO delicious w/ a sourdough baguette)
    -Tahini

Like I said before, this is the best local produce market in the Sunset area, if not one of the best in the city.

This is where most of my produce is purchased. As people have said before the selection isn't huge, but they carry basic stuff plus some extras when in season. I got a huge fennel bulb for a dollar a few weeks ago. Prices here are pretty low, but sometimes you can find stuff for nearly free! The food is always fresh too. Sometimes when I go to other random markets I end up with fruit flies hatching from the produce but thankfully that doesn't happen with stuff I buy here.

Since moving here I've stopped buying produce at the bigger chains and buy most stuff here.

I wanted to like this market because of all the yelp reviews... but when I came here I didn't find anything with great prices. I picked up some vegetables, fruits, eggs and milk and then during the week when I went to Lucky and Trader Joe's they had even better deals. For example, grapes at 22nd market were 1.99/lb while Lucky was only 0.99/lb!!

The market is tiny and I was hoping to find some asian stuff  but there really wasn't much. They have a lot of canned/jarred anchovies??? It's not very clean and the people working there seem dead but at least it didn't smell...

This is my favorite place to shop locally. I am partial because this is near to where I live and it is like home to me. I have been buying produce here for years. And, so have so many, many other people for generations.

Often there are sales and one can find some great bargains. For example for the past several weeks, strawberries have been priced at two baskets for $3.00.

And, blueberries and raspberries are on sale two baskets for $5.00. This is wonderful because berries are in season and when fruit is in season it is the best.

As said before in my previous reviews, I am a fan of the fresh bread they sell. It is so good. One brand they offer is called Semifreddies. My favorite loaf is the Ciabatta bread. See web link to the web site.

    http://www.semifreddis...

And, I have recently discovered a brand of jam and jelly sold at 22nd & Irving Market called "Amir."

It is so good and flavorful. The strawberry, peach and cherry jams are unlike any other jam I have had before.

Every once in a while I like to get the gourmet cookies in the round clear plastic tubs. They are really good and at $2.99 to 3.99 they are a nice alternative to the usual packaged brand one finds in supermarkets.

People often don't realize what a wonderful little market this is. No wonder it has been in business for decades.

Great selection of FRESH produce and awesome prices. It's really cool!

Not only is the produce fresh, but they also bag things like nuts, dried fruits, sun-dried tomatoes, and oats in their own weighed bags, which I thought was really cool! Never have I seen anything like that. And they sell turkish delight... the actual rosewater kind. AND THEY SELL ROSEWATER! And there is so much cheese! A big ol' brick (it might as well have been that big) of feta for eight bucks...  So much cheese! I didn't buy any dairy though, because it's all organic and everything, but a tad more expensive than if I went somewhere else.

    I made some awesome discoveries!

I made the ol' college call back home to my mom to let her know how I was spending the money she gave me. When I got all excited and told her how I got 99 cent tofu, she was like "oh, yeah all markets are like that." Well pbbt to you mom! Not up here!

Safeway can now officially suck my dick!

Are you still picking up your fruits and veggies at Safeway?  Andronicos or Luckys?  Well, you're spending way too much.  Seriously.  I started checking out this place when I would head downtown in the mornings and always saw folks outside with their little baskets checking out the produce.

I didn't really pay attention to the prices, just picked up what I wanted and went to pay. After switching back and forth between Safeway and this place, I started to notice not only the difference in price, but also the quality.  I went this Sunday and this is what I bought:

    mini baguette
    organic arugula
    green onions
    spinach
    asparagus
    apples
    1/2 gallon milk
    fresh thyme
    fresh rosemary
    bananas
    jalapeno
    bean sprouts
    potatoes
    flour tortillas
    ginger

Total?  $17.66!!!!!  Major bargain.  Kind of amazing.  If you love your veggies and fruits, be sure to stock up at this place.  Only drag is that they close early on Sundays at like 4pm.  I think during the week and Saturday it's 6pm.  Oh well ... taking Muni is better than finding parking in this hood.  It pays to go early too since when I went around 1:30 all the mushrooms were all gone!!

    Check it out!

Why pay an arm and a leg at Safeway/Lucky's when you can get fresh produce for MUCH cheaper at 22nd & Irving?!?!

I learned the hard way.  For some odd reason, I was craving rainier cherries, so I picked some up at Lucky's...went to the self checkout....holy begeeeezers...$7!!!!  Oh fine...I really wanted the cherries.  I get home and tell my roommate what I just spent, and he says..."Uhh...you could've bought that on 22nd."  Damn it!

So now I get my produce at 22nd.  So much cheaper and their produce is fresh!  The only bad thing is they close at 6 on weekdays.  So if I work late, no fresh fruit and veggies for me.  =(

This eclectic place carries so many different kinds of food items that is just pleasant. From organic wild forest bourbon coffee beans, to Greek mountain tea, to Kimbo Espresso Napolentano.

How about some baklava, delicious figs, cute lady apples, or great fresh sprigs of mint leaves or those French pastries that are also kosher, or some pistachio / almond / hazelnut mixed delight?

All here, all great, all great and fast service.

Traditionally, April Fools Day isn't so much about making an ass out of other people as it is about loving spring and its products.

Hence, 22nd and Irving, I love you. In honor of our love - and April Fools Day - I make you my 100th review.

Here is a list of the much beloved items I have found at this aptly and simply named establishment:

    -blood oranges
    -cara cara oranges
    -meyer lemons
-greek oregano, actually from greece, and not in a jar
    -european soda
    -salt cod
-uncured olives, ready for home curing
    -walnuts in shell
    -chestnut puree
    -very fresh sunchokes
    -excellent belgian endive
    -imported buckwheat
    -cipollini onions

Those are just the foods I love. You might love others, but that's your business, I suppose.

By the way, did you know that George W. Bush is dead?

Not to be confused, I repeat, not to be confused with 23rd & Irving, which is inferior. Not sure how these 2 stores with such creative names can co-exist peacefully! (things settled down after the great branding wars of 1974)

Even though this is a produce/grocery store with a wonderful variety of "ethnic" specialties in both the fresh and dried goods, my favorite thing about it is the BREAD. They must be the first drop-off point for Semifreddi's. Heavenly. When the mister brings home a loaf of Odessa Rye, I am satisfecho.

I will say they don't always have the best produce, like when tomatoes are already good at the farmer's market they won't have 'em for a couple of weeks or not at all, but it is cheap cheap cheap and you can find ingredients for asian, latin and middle eastern cooking as well as americano. Plus the owner and staff are really sweet.

Greek owned, 22nd & Irving is stocked full of fresh produce (not much is organic), some amazing deals, and hard to find Greek/Middle Eastern groceries (teas, cheeses, couscous, spreads, jams, legumes).  They have more than your standard fare (look for Jerusalem artichokes, broccoli rabe, gooseberries) though you won't necessarily find every obscure vegetable you want.  On the positive side, their produce is usually fresh.  This is a popular market (and the lines can be long), so turnover is quick.

I've liked the following things that I've found here:
    * Israeli couscous (round, larger than typical couscous, hearty in soups)
    * Tarmosalata (caviar spread that's nice on toast)
    * Harissa (Tunisian hot chili paste, I stir it into soups)
    * Avjar (red pepper spread that I put on everything)
    * Greek vanilla cookies (all their Greek cookies are good but I like the swirly ones)

They even have products from Iran and a large selection of Turkish delight.  Sometimes they sell a basket of berries for $1!  The herbs (cilantro, chives, tarragon, sage, etc.) go for 99 cents a bunch.  I like to buy my mushrooms, chili peppers, and bell peppers here.  Note, the dried fruits and nuts seem to be cheaper at TJs and the tofu is definitely cheaper at Chinese markets.

It's not a gourmet market but you can find some items I haven't found elsewhere and at fair prices.  They accept food stamps.  Random fact:  They are closed for Greek Orthodox Easter which is usually different from our Easter (in 2008, it falls on April 27).  Parking in this area is a big pain especially on weekends but you'll find Chinese people wandering around day and night.

FRESHEST produce possible. You won't have to spend an hour looking through their apples to find an unbruised, yummy, delicious one. Cut your grocery shopping time by 90% just by coming here! Where else can you occasionally find a HUGE bag of pricey portobellos for just one dollar? Yeah, that's right, one dollar! Where else can you find the ever so rare galangal, mangosteen, rhubarb, thai basil, thyme, and all the other fresh herbs you can think of, from greek to asian to whatnot, all under the same roof? And ohh their artichokes that cost so little but taste oh so expensive. It's quite the steal. Don't forget to pick up your whole wheat pitas for ONE dollar! And what other grocery store sells Fage and Almond Breeze on Irving? Can't beat that.

I just love 22nd irving! I'm currently suffering the effects of a crazy mushroom binge. Ouch, I think I ate waay too much.

I can buy pickles by the truckload!  $.69 /lb.  LOOK OUT VLASIC there's a new king in town!  My family always took pride in stuffing things in jars and eating them some time later.  I make great pickles thanks to my Father's secret recipe and spice collection.

22nd and Irving is reasonable for all produce (even ORGANIC).  Awesome international/Middle east/greek selection of foods.  Bulk items, whole grains, legumes, dairy.  NO MEAT.   But!  If you need a can of Octopus (Pulpo) on a rainy day, don't hesitate... They will have it!

And don't forget the constant stream of lite-rock/muzak to set the mood!  Up with people!

    I love my neighborhood!

Now this is my favorite place to shop on Irving Street.  I probably go here once or twice a week.  It's so convenient and the produce is fresh.  I'm so glad it's in my neighborhood.  They have all kinds of veggies here that you can't always find at a major chain store so it makes for an interesting dinner if you're willing to try different things.  The staff is friendly and they probably recognize me since I'm there all the time.

I would agree that they close way too early.  They close at 6:30 on the dot, and I mean on the dot!  I get off work late and get home around 6:25 sometimes, so I am physically running over to the store to grab some food before they lock the doors.  Definitely worth my exercise to get my food here.  It's the best produce store on Irving!
