2223 is perfect, perfection all around!
Location: Have a wonderful dinner and walk a few blocks and have drinks in the happiest place on earth, the Castro!
Food: Perfection, be careful though, they change their menu frequently, so if you fall in love with a particular dish, your heart might be broken next time you walk in and they say they are not serving it that night.
Ambiance/crowd/service. Nice decor, simple, elegant. The crowd is usually fabulous, no snobs and the service is always good.
Prices: Be prepared to pay around $100 for a dinner for two and drinks, but it's worth every single penny!
To be clear, my review for 2223 is actually closer 3 1/2 stars. Not to mention, I only had the opportunity to try two of the dishes here. I would definitely be willing to come back to try more of their menu, since my friends and other Yelpers seem to be a bit more enthusiastic about this place than I am.
For starters, my multi-cheese macaroni and cheese was excellent, if not a tad bit heavy. The oversized macaroni shells were cooked well, the many types of cheeses complemented each other well, and overall the dish tasted great. I would hardly call this dish a "side" though, since by the time I was through with it, I hardly had an appetite for my main course. Lesson learned: share this dish with a friend the next time around.
My butternut squash and sage ravioli followed. Now, I'm not usually one to pass up a good steak or salmon for my main course, but this dish sounded amazing on paper. In the end, it was pretty good, but not spectacular. There was a bit too much butternut squash, in my opinion, and the dish could've been cooked with far less oil than it was. One heavy main course after a heavy starter did not make for a pleasant feeling in my stomach.
Despite this, 2223 has a lot of charm. Service was good (although our server was a bit absentminded with my group's wineglasses on a couple of occasions) and the decor and ambiance was sophisticated, but comfortable.
In the end, I'll probably need to come back a second time to see if i truly fall in love with this place like others seem to do. My friends ordered the chicken and the salmon, and they all seemed to enjoy their dishes. So I'm not going to rule this place out just yet.
One of the best brunch I've had in town.
Took my best gay boyboy visiting from Ohio here, for the brunch and people watching ;-) The cocktails were beautifully crafted, and dishes were amazing as well. I had my usual salmon benedict, but his hamburger was just PERFECT! Juicy medium-rare meat, on a soft bun that just absorbs all the heavenly juice. The fries were good too! I hate fried food, but if I touch them more than twice, it's good!
Great service, everyone there was such sweetheart.
Seriously nom brunch. They take reservations for brunch which totally beats standing outside staring down diners while waiting for a table. The service was super friendly and attentive (came with coffee and oj as soon as we were seated) but didn't rush us at all. The food was delicious. We had the eggs benedict (light-ish hollandaise sauce, good amount of ham, perfectly cooked eggs atop home-made biscuits), biscuits & gravy (more in the spirit of the eggs benedict), hash (wow is all I can say) and the two egg breakfast. The portions were very generous, the prices were good. I would absolutely go back. Oh, and a huge thank you to the host for playing peekaboo with my kid for a good 30 minutes -- you are a rockstar.
I had to think about whether I could really make this claim and be serious. And I absolutely can.
This was the best breakfast I've ever had.
Warm, gooey, pecan cinnamon roll.
Strong coffee.
Spicy without being absurd bloody mary.
Eggs Benedict with a perfect hollandaise sauce, slab of ham, wonderful scones, fluffy poached eggs and amazingly dressed side salad.
A server that was there to refill coffee whenever I was getting low.
A new set of silver wear after we finished the cinnamon roll.
A check that seemed very reasonable.
To the guy from the post office store on Castro who recommended it - thanks. Keep recommending it.
Love this place! The Chef is self taught and she is amazing. The menu changes seasonally and you will always find something you love no matter what time of year. Service, staff, and ambiance are all terrific. I encourage all of my friends to check this place out.
Pros: Ambiance, Service, Wine
Cons: Price, Incorrect/ Dated menu pricing from website, taste of food, too salty crispy onions, wrong bill received at table (they gave us a $270 bill when ours was really $170)
This place is fast becoming a regular stop for me. Solid food, solid service.
The staff are great which makes it a pleasure to come back again and again.
That and the martinis.....
I went here for a friend's birthday party on a saturday night. She made reservations, but found out that night that a few people would be unable to make it. The staff fixed the table right away without any problems. We were also running about 20 minutes late and they were very nice about that as well. As we sat down in the back, private room, the waiter offered to take the cake and put it in the refrigerator while we ate dinner. Perfect! Our waiter, Patrick, was also very patient as it took us awhile to decide.
There were 9 people in our party. We started with a few drinks and the tomato tower and the artichoke. The tomato appetizer was beautiful and very flavorful. The artichoke dish was alright. The dipping sauce was good though..garlicky and lemony.
I ordered the pork chop dish as my entree. The portions were bigger than I expected and the pork chop was huge and well-cooked...just slightly pink in the middle. I also liked the polenta and arugula together. I always thought polenta was boring and bland, but this one had a bit of a bite thanks to the gorgonzola cheese...which was not chunky, but blended into the polenta. The nectarines were a nice touch, too. My boyfriend had the roasted chicken. So good! The chicken was tasty and juicy and the onion rings were crispy. I kept sneaking bites off of his plate! The green beans were cooked just right...not at all mushy. Everyone else seemed to love their food, too. Except one guy at the table said the flat iron steak was cooked medium instead of medium well. Other than that, everything was fantastic.
They put sparkler candles on the cake we brought and waited until everyone was at the table, turned out the lights, and we sang happy birthday to the birthday girl. We brought our own candles, but I'm glad they took care of that for us. Then they cut and served the cake and even left her a quarter of it to take home!
Patrick was very nice and very attentive. Our glasses were always full. Service was great. I would have liked to see more variety in the appetizer list...seemed like there were a few too many salads. Also, I'd suggest reservations even if you're not coming with a big party. The place looked full on saturday night.
Front door parking = serendipity. Which led us to be there half an hour early. No worries, cocktails to the rescue!
A round of beer and cocktails (mango tango http://www.yelp.com/bi... + citrus blossom http://www.yelp.com/bi...) to hold us over. We started discussing movies, and the bartender told us not to watch Gamer. So I didn't.
8:00, heading to the back room where a long table (for 11) with confetti lined across. It was definitely our party.
We had the grilled flat bread (http://www.yelp.com/bi...) and the heirloom tomato salad (http://www.yelp.com/bi...) to start.
I (along with a few others) ordered the chicken (http://www.yelp.com/bi...). The portion is huge, and I ended up taking half home for a late night snack.
The chocolate molten cake (http://www.yelp.com/bi...) was amazing. Soft, gooey, and flavorful. Mmm mmm good.
I just wish the table behind us would stop staring at us the entire time we were at dinner. Rude much?
Went here on a Tuesday night when they do their "$12 Tuesdays" dinner menu. We split the iceberg lettuce wedge salad which was really BIG and scrumptious. We shared two entrees: The Spicy Pulled Pork & Queso Papusa Black Beans & Vegetable Slaw, which was EXCELLENT! and the special of the evening which was Fried Chicken on a Bed of Greens which was also really good, generous on the chicken. One Comment: If your planning to go to eat cheaper on the Tuesday special menu and intend on drinking wine, bring a bottle. We spent more on wine that night than on the food. We were planning on bringing a bottle of wine and forgot, next time we won't forget!
2223 was all around spectacular!!
My wife and I were in SF for a night at the beginning of our California vacation and wanted to have dinner in the Castro. After searching countless online reviews, I happened upon the 2223 website and we decided to give it a shot.
There wasn't one thing that wasn't perfect!!
We just so happened to be there on a Tuesday night, when they have a $6/12 menu ($6 apps, $12 mains), so we got a perfect meal for an unbelievable price.
One of the apps on the special menu isn't on the standard menu, but it's not to be missed. It's a bruschetta, but unlike any other I've seen before!
I could go on and on, but just do yourself a favour and try 2223 ASAP!!!
Very good service, pretty drinks, $12 entrees on Tuesdays, and food that is not amazing but pretty good....all add up to 4 stars.
The service was what stood out the most. The waiter was very accommodating of one of our friends many needs, he even got her a toothpick when she asked for one. That's service! I think the service made the whole dining experience that much better. We had the chicken spring rolls and a sausage, mushroom, and cheddar pizza for starters. The spring rolls were tasty, and the pizza was pretty standard fare. We had some wine and cocktails, all reasonably prices at 7-10 dollars. We each ordered an entree from the $12 menus....and each was pretty standard. The food is nothing special, but the kind service mixed with the reasonable priced drinks, and cheap entrees made for a good night out.
If you go on a Tuesday, it is definitely worth it. Where else in the city can you get a $12 entree with great service? That's almost the price of one drink, and you're stuffed by the end of your entree. I think that's hard to find. Great value, lively atmosphere, and great service.
Will have to go back since I wasn't very hungry and hence, didn't order very much...which is why I'm only giving 3 stars and will probably have to come back and re-rate 2223.
Met up with the bf's friends here. The place is very swanky inside...almost too swanky for a restaurant. It looks as though it could open into a club, with the loungey music playing, warm colors and dimly lit interior. Service was a bit slow...in ordering drinks and then ordering our food.
Here's what was ordered:
-mint infused limeade ($4): like a non-alcoholic mojito. Was really, really good but the mint leaves were smashed too small that I felt like I had leaves stuck in between my teeth.
-thai chicken spring rolls ($10.50): standard spring rolls...it was okay
-tomato tower: slices of tomatoes stacked high with arugula and cheese and drizzled with balsamic vinegar...yum!
-herb roasted Fulton Valley chicken ($21): DELISH! Juicy and tender chicken with the crispy, fried skin served on.
-grilled maple cured pork chop ($23): didn't try it.
-salmon: didn't try it.
-tri-tip: tender and moist with au gratin potatoes
-mac and cheese side dish ($7): I've had better. It was soupy and a disappointment to a mac and cheese lover.
The food looked really great and the stuff I did try was fabulous. I blame eating a large lunch late for my 3 star review.
[Green Zebra Coupon: Grilled flat bread with rouille and parmesan on the house -and- sour cherry bread pudding, compliments of the kitchen -and- free, house-made Bloody Mary with Sunday brunch]
How can I describe to you how great this place is? In general, good food, great service, good atmosphere. In specific:
I was stuffed from eating the pancakes. For a restaurant well into the $$ and possibly approaching $$$, I figured $8.50 for a brunch dish would be a teeny bit of food. I was so wrong. My lemon-buttermilk pancakes came out with so much organic fruit (strawberries and blueberries) and sweet berry sauce stuff AND not-from-a-can whipped cream I thought I'd die. As if that wasn't awesome enough, the pancakes themselves were somehow almost crispy on the outside and soft and steamy on the inside. My guess is a lot of butter, but I've simply never had pancakes that good. My friend got the vegetable fritata and said it was good but I was way too stuffed to try more than a small bite of it.
-and-
Eric, our waiter (and the other guys walking around with water) was great. We came in and asked about how to use the Green Zebra coupon since it has all those "-and-"s and he first of all knew what we were talking about and didn't give us any weird looks. We couldn't get the flat bread with brunch because they just don't make it that early, which he explained with an "and should you want to come again for dinner" as opposed to a "when" assumption or a plain "you can't use it."
-and-
When I first walked in I thought it was kinda dark, especially compared to the warm, sunny, Castro morning outside. Once my eyes adjusted, though it was fine. More importantly, the volume (during brunch, anyway) was about as perfect as I could hope for. It was quite enough that I could hear my friend across the table perfectly, but loud enough that the table next to us wouldn't have to listen to us talk -- or really be able to.
Frankly it's a great place for a casual or fun-intimate brunch at the cloth napkin-level for the price of paper.
ok, so I branched out today and tried the Biscuits and Gravy (of course, this would follow the cinnamon roll).
Hands down, this is the best biscuits & gravy I've ever had. The plate actually looked good (there was color - peppers, spinach) vs the traditional version which looks like mush on a plate covered with pepper.
If you want a carb-loaded brunch give this a shot.

Rounded out an evening of drinks with coworkers with a final stop at the 2223 Restaurant in the Castro. What a great place! It was $12 Tuesday so we loaded up on $6 appetizers and $12 entrees. Our friend who recommended the place sweared by an elderberry cocktail, which was not on the menu at the time but the waiter sweet talked the bartender into making it anyway.
I ordered salmon with steam rice- I wish I could give a better description of my meal and others, but I had an alcoholic coffee drink for dessert and can't remember much after that except for "yum".
The fried calamari was so smothered in sauce I couldn't find the calamari. Everything else was mediocre. The only redeeming quality was the good service. I won't be going back there for awhile.
I can only speak for brunch... but it's fantastic! Service was great, which is important to me as someone in the service industry.
Careful with the pecan roll - it almost brought me to tears. I swear they had my grandfather (rest his soul) in the kitchen making them, because they tasted EXACTLY like the ones he used to make us at home. This is my go-to brunch spot for out of town guests!!
We dined here tonight as we were in the neighborhood. We were a bit hesitant to dine here given the bad reviews on Yelp recently. Our meal turned out to be really good. Perhaps they have a moody chef?
We ordered the Lamb with fingerling potatoes ($24) and the Herb Roasted Chicken with mashed potatoes ($21). We normally don't order chicken at a restaurant (blah... too ordinary), but the server raved about the chicken and told us that it was the signature dish. It turned out to be very tender and flavorful. The mashed potatoes was just out of this world. I could have eaten a plateful of the mashed potato and I am not normally a potato person.
The lamb had excellent flavorful and the red wine reduction sauce was just the right amount of sauce as it can be salty (as it often is). The fingerling potato was also outstanding (Is the chef from Idaho or what?). The only complaint is that the lamb was not quite Medium Rare which is what we ordered. It was more like medium. Since it was very tender and flavorful, we didn't send it back.
All in all it was a very good and satisfying meal... I would characterize our entrees as rustic/country French.
I will be back to check out their $12 menu on Mondays and Tuesdays ($6 for apps, $12 for entrees).
a great brunch spot hands down. i walked in with no expectations and left wondering how i had never heard about the brunch here before. just go and trust me on this one.
I love 2223!! We came here for a quick bite to eat before seeing our friends' band play @ Cafe' du Nord down the street. We were greeted with a smile & quickly seated. Fast, attentive, super friendly host & servers. Great lighting, and I loved the sexy atmosphere, decor, and the warm, reflective quality of the copper-topped tables. The house bread is wonderful - fresh & warm. We shared an AMAZING salad - arugula with butternut squash & pears, gorgonzola, and orgasmic roasted WARM figs ~soooo good. We also split the grilled flatbread with smoked salmon & lemon boursin (very good - but I'm still a fan of Wolfgang Puck's version). Great Ketel One martinis, too! The only downside were the unisex bathrooms - urine all over the floor around the base of the toilet, and a horrible, steamy urine smell -yuck (minus one star for that (please be more attentive)). Cool music & atmosphere. We will definitely be back!!
Came here with some friends to celebrate Grace K.'s birthday and absolutely loved it!! The perks about dining with a fairly large group was that we were able to order everything from the main course menu and shared with each other. I ordered the popular Herb Roasted Fulton Valley Chicken w/ a tower of onion rings and it definitely met up to it's reputation. The chicken was super moist and cooked to perfection!
I was also able to try the salmon, pork chop, flat iron steak, seafood polenta, & calamari salad and ALL were superb. Next to the chicken, I say the grilled maple cured pork chop was my next favorite dish. The meat was sooo tender and sweet and just melted in my mouth.
The service is excellent and the ambience was quite cozy and romantic. Remember, it's in the Castro district. So ladies, if you look across the room and see a man that can pull off eyeliner better than you, don't take offense to it. ;)
Had dinner on a Friday night with a friend. He ordered the Mustard Glazed Loch Duarte Salmon ($19.50) and the Butternut Squash Soup. I ordered the Herb Roasted Fulton Valley Chicken ($21). We split the Sour Cherry Bread Pudding ($8).
Atmosphere: Dark and swanky. I kind of expected that from the fact that the door to the restaurant is so nondescript and the restaurant is named after the address.
Food: Delicious. The chicken was juicy and just salty enough and the green beans, mashed potatoes and onion rings were a great combination. My friend loved his salmon and thought the soup was rather tasty. Though we were practically full, we still devoured the bread pudding...yum.
Service: Overall, service was fast and our waters were always filled, though I did feel a little pressured to order a starter with my entree or a drink to complement my meal. I suppose it makes sense...the larger bill, the larger the tip. I just got the uncomfortable feeling that our waiter liked our neighboring, 4-person table more than us. Oh well, still a good meal.
It was a decent, week night place for comfort food. Good service. A bit ho-hum, but if you're looking for somewhere to get some steak or chicken on a Monday evening, then you are all set.
Oh my god...
I've walked by this place a gazillion times without ever noticing there was a restaurant here, but some out of town guests suggested it on a recommendation in Fodor's.
Got here for an early dinner (6-ish) and had no trouble getting a table. The staff was super friendly.
Ordered beers and a tasty mint limeade to drink, and got the Heirloom Tomato Tower and Grilled Flatbread appetizers.
Presentation was great on the tower, and the tomatoes were meaty while perfectly ripe. The flatbread wasn't as great. Flavor was decent, but the red pepper dressing looks entirely unappetizing (think thousand island dressing).
I had the grilled chicken for an entree. It's an herbed, seared thigh and leg served atop garlic mashed potatoes and surrounded by lightly battered onion rings.
The darked meat in the chicken was cooked perfectly except a little higher up on the thigh it was a little grainy. The seasoning on the skin hit the spot as did the potatoes. They were whipped smooth and creamy with a generous amount of butter and just the right hint of garlic.
They make a mean onion ring too.
Several of the dessert items looked tasty, but we had full and content stomachs.
A delightful spot for Sunday brunch.
When a friend wanted a suggestion for brunch, 2223 came to mind. I actually hadn't read my review in awhile, and now that I look back on it, it seems it's time for a re-write. They've improved on their time-reading skills. In fact, the wait is next to non-existent if you get there before noon.
The food is still fantastic! The menu hasn't changed a whole lot, but that's not such a bad thing. That means they've got plenty of practice on those dishes. We ordered a cinnamon roll [size of my face!] to share, the corned beef hash + poached eggs, and the salmon eggs benedict. Giant portions. Perfectly poached eggs to soak the brioche toast and perfectly salted corned beef. MMmmMMm.
Coffee and water were refilled. Food came out at the same time. Watch out! Hot plates!
Good job, 2223! Well-deserving of the re-write.

Perfect evening. Absolutely perfect.
We were a small group celebrating my best friend's birthday Saturday. He and I met there early to sneak some cocktails before everyone else arrived. The bartender was so handsome, charming and friendly that he set the bar for my expectations for the evening: I just knew it was going to be lovely.
And it was.
We were seated in a little private area in back, making us feel special from the get-go. Our waiter was attentive to detail yet not overbearing; he anticipated and met our every need, giving us plenty of time, yet not TOO much, to enjoy our drinks and appetizers.
Oh, the appetizers. If you don't order anything else, order the calamari salad. Crunchy fried squid with crisp, bitter greens and steamed vegetables, topped with two delicious sauces...one tomatoey and the other creamy. I couldn't get enough.
The best part of my entrée was what was served on the side. I had ordered the rabbit and it was so rich that I almost couldn't eat it on its own...but once I cut it with the mouthwatering mashed potatoes and the seasonal vegetables, I understood why the chef had chosen that combination. I especially loved the fresh green peas...it's so rare that I get to eat them and I hated to see the last one go!
For dessert, the table shared the sour cherry bread pudding (with a sparkler for the birthday boy...cute touch), a death-by-chocolate-type dessert and an apple crisp. They were all terrific, but the bread pudding was by far the biggest hit.
2223 is unique in that it is worthy to be called both a "special occasion" AND a "neighborhood" restaurant. It's truly a little gem.
Time again for our Quarterly Dinner & boy, what a winner!
2223 was suggested by a coworker & we had been trying to get here the past few visits he made to town, but it was last night that luck finally shined on us
We were 12 in our party so we were placed in the back room for more privacy & it was great....even in the sweltering heat yesterday, the temp was tolerable. Waitstaff was incredible - very attentive & nice as could be
Food? That's a whole other level of yumminess & let's just say plates were licked clean & after whining about how full we all were, we somehow found enough room for desserts
Some of our group indulged in the $12 Tuesdays Menu & some off the "regular" & here are the highlights....
3-Cheese Chille Rellano - a huge, tender chille just brimming w/ gooey cheese that had just a bit of crunchy-crispy brown along the edges, which is just how I like it - paired w/ black beans & grilled veggies
Spicy Pulled Pork - nice & tender (so I'm told) w/ a perfect kick of heat to it - paired perfectly w/ its veggies & bread so that the Pork really took center stage
Grilled Tilapia, Flat-Iron Steak, Meat Loaf - we had it all & there was not one person who did not rave about their meal
Desserts were phenomenal! Sour Cherry Bread Pudding for me & it ranks among the best I've ever had...even in last night's heat, I couldn't resist the hot cobbler & it was chewy, caramely, & gooey
Others partook in the Angelfood Cake w/ fresh fruit - baked fresh & it was spongy, light & extremely tasty; Chocolate Molten Cake & it was 1 of the runniest, gooiest, chocolatiest molten cakes I've ever seen & I totally want to try that next time; and finally the Sorbet...a HUGE bowl of different sorbets which were creamy & pungently flavorful
Drinks were good & strong, beer selection was fantastic & it was the perfect way to end our Quarterly Meeting - absolutely cannot wait to come back!!!
I came here for the quintessential Sunday activity: BRUNCH.
Usually, there are hour long waits for brunch at any restaurant around the city, but since we got to 2223 around 2:15 pm (after peak brunch hours), we were seated immediately. Our hostess and waiter were both very friendly. They reassured us that there was "no rush", even though they were technically already closed for brunch. Our waiter was patient & did not try to hurry us through our meal, which my friend & I really appreciated.
I had their corned beef hash & poached eggs, my friend had eggs benedict & we shared some buttermilk pancakes with strawberries & "chantilly cream." I usually don't order corned beef hash because it always comes out too salty & too fatty, but their corned beef hash was delicious & very lean. The pancakes were more savory than sweet, which complimented the ripe strawberries nicely--i highly recommend the pancakes.
I do prefer Lime's upbeat, energetic club vibe to 2223's more mellow, relaxed ambiance, but I will definitely be returning- if not for brunch, then definitely for their bar food (silver dollar menu, Thai spring rolls), which several friends have raved about.
I came here last night with a very good friend from my university days. The company was fantastic, but the meal fell flat. We both ordered the grilled Flat Iron Steak with a parmesan & caramelized onion gratin
roasted asparagus & tarragon bernaise. The steak was a bit overcooked, tough, and full of grissle. The bernaise sauce did not have the right consistency and was lacking the flavor of tarragon (which is the main flavor in bernaise). Everything needed LOTS of salt and I am one that does not usually add salt to food once it has been cooked.
We had coffees after the meal and the first cup arrived and it had obviously been made long before it had been served and reheated.
All in all, a very mediocre meal. Thank goodness the company made up for it.
We went here for the first time last night, on halloween. It's a good neighborhood restaurant with good food and services. All the employees were dressed in costume (as were many of the patrons), and the service was charming and cheerful. The food was good, if not particularly inventive. We enjoyed it.
Festive, hip, delish, nice atmosphere, prompt service... what more can you ask for?
Great food and good wine selections, yet another treat the Castro area has to offer. One of the best to rant about!
Asian, American & Mediterranean influence. The benches seating is plush and cozy. It's upscale yet still casual and a great place for a date, group or brunches. It's not much of a family with children scene, since it can get loud so leave the kiddies at home.
Reserve ahead of time if you're in a group especially for dinner (this place is very popular yet not overrated and worth every moment of bite).
Deserts will wake your taste buds like it's never been before.
FYI. Parking in Market street isn't that bad as many would say. In this area, if you are mobile just park and hazard wait a couple minutes... cars come and go. So spare extra parking / waiting time if you refuse to walk blocks after blocks.
Enjoy Yelper's!
Sometimes I think that eating at 2223 makes me unoriginal and beautiful, mainly because I always feel like it might be trying too hard. But time and time again, it proves me wrong... except about being beautiful.
I recently went here for brunch, because a friend of mine said that it was really good and decently priced. Since I'm a die-hard fan for brunch (I sometimes eat breakfast food for every meal in a single day), I had to check this out. I already loved their dinner and bread pudding; how could it hurt me? I guess I could love it so much that I eat there everyday until I'm fat and have no money left (at which point, I would beg for the left overs after every Sunday brunch in the back before they threw it out.)
Basically what I'm saying is that the brunch is amazing. Speaking of being homeless, this food is so good, that if I were homeless, I would constantly raid their trash to savor the yumminess of their breakfast breadpudding, cornbeef hash, lemon pancakes, and especially their sour cherry applicious French Toast, which I had yesterday morning to orgasmic glory.
Eat here. Love here. Go homeless here. Peace.

I normally hate poached eggs but WOW their South Beach vegetable benedict was soooo delicious! It had some type of sauce and eaten with the vegetables was perfect. We ordered the humongo french fries served with no dipping sauce. They don't have ranch?! But the french fries were pretty delicious by themselves. The friend got some time of mexican tortilla tower. It looked overwhelming but he said it was really delicious! I would come back here for the same benedict!
I have been here many times for both brunch and dinner and must say that the food is some of the best. The fried calamari is the best I've ever had; the herb salad and sauces drizzled on top make it addicting. The entrees are all very simple and straight-forward, yet they are executed perfectly. Even the simple roast chicken becomes a new experience. Brunch choices are great too. They are all your familiar choices, yet all with a slight, delicious twist. The decor is San Francisco neighbor elegant, with a feeling that makes you feel comfortable the moment you sit down.
The only reason I didn't give five stars is the somewhat lacking service several times I've been there. It can sometimes be very slow and frustrating and some of the staff can be a bit mediocre and boring.
Overall, one of my favs!
I've frequently belittled the Castro as being not a real "foodie" neighborhood, but 2223 single-handedly makes up for the rest of the mediocrity. This has to be one of my top 5 brunches of all time. The piece de resistance was certainly my root veggie bread pudding, but I also sampled the eggs benedict and the sausage-n-biscuits and they weren't far behind. My only regret was eating so much I had no room for their famous dessert bread pudding. Anyway, I'd go into a rhapsodic description of the flavors, but words do not do it justice. Plus I'm lazy.
As for the scene, it's positively tame compared to the non-stop party next door at Lime, but despite the ample seating there can still be a non-trivial wait. Of course, you can just take a seat at the beautiful bar, where the friendly bartender will be happy to give you a shot of Sambuca in your latte (really, a brunch of this quality deserves a sophisticated drink).
Whoever thought up the birthday brunch for my friend on Sunday was brilliant, but whoever decided to have that brunch at 2223 is a genius. I lucked out and got seated next to someone who likes to share, so I got to try the biscuits and gravy w/house made sausage AND the Mushroom, Butternut Squash & Parmesan Bread Pudding. Both were delicious. I can also vouch for the Warm Cinnamon Roll w/ toasted walnuts, that someone from our party ordered for the table. Finally, I will say that while I did not try the Housemade Chorizo & Pepper Jack Scramble, the waiter mistakenly put someone's order down in front of me for a second and all I could think was, "Next time chorizo...next time."
GA GA GA GA GA GiGGIDY GOOO!
Wow. I had the roasted chicken dish. That thing was cooked to perfection. tender, not too moist and a sauce that complemented the potatoes and chicken at the same time.
With Onion rings cooked with a flavour akin to Indian crackers.
The place was freakin awesome. Add the Vagina/Flower paintings and we are having ourselves a good time!
Table spacing was appropriate where it was comfortable but completely isolated. Service was OK. The waitress was grand, put up with all my shizit. But the kitchen F'd up the appetizer so that came out late, then our main course came out WAAAY late. Like where is my freakn food mang - late.
But still 5 stars because the chicken was an excellent pairing. Also tried the pizza with chicken and arugulla. NOw this really isn't a pie as much as it is snooty toppings on crap bread. But the crap bread mixes will with the very aromatic goat cheese and arugula. The Potatoes give the concoction a good foundation.
I definetly recommend this place to anyone. DELISH!
