I must admit that I'm a little biased because I have the honor of hosting GetSet, a happy hour that goes down here every Friday from 7-10pm, BUT I think 222 Hyde is one of the most awesome spots in the city. It's a versatile venue: you can chill at the bar, grab a drink, and nod your head to some great beats or you can head downstairs and boogie to your heart's content.  On Thursday you can even check out the hilarious open mic comedy cellar. But what really makes 222 stand out from the crowd is, of course, the soundsystem.  As a soundsystem snob I'm pretty hard to please in this department, but being planted in the middle of the dancefloor at 222 is an incredible experience for your ears and mind.  The sound is so crystal clear and loud without being overbearing - you can easily have a conversation with the person next to you and your ears won't ring when you go home (priceless!).

All in all, you can't go wrong at 222.  Sure the neighborhood is a bit on the sketchy side, but its very close to downtown/BART and I don't feel unsafe...basically its like the jungle - don't mess with the animals and they won't mess with you :)

And now for some obligatory self promo: please come grab some super cheap drinks ($3!) and get your boogie on every Friday from 7-10pm at GetSet at 222 Hyde! :) http://facebook.com/ge...

This venue is good because of the funktion one sound system. The vibe is usually great and I have had fun memories that I will never forget.
The reason I am not a huge fan are because when it gets crowded the bottom level
turns into a sweat box and is not enjoyable.

One of my favorite kick it spots in the TL! It's dark, yet friendly and the music is always pretty kewl (early evening- i don't know what they play later). Katie uses fresh ingredients on the pizza and fresh mint leaves in the mojitos! Talking to Grant over a drink is always a good time, he gets you what you ask for and doesn't try to sell you BS drinks.

This place has character, strong drinks, a nice ambiance where you can be there with your buddies, a date, or a casual meeting. Plus, there is pizza. And it is good my friends. I wanted to try the Bombay pizza, with garam masala, but I was stuffed from dinner, and the fat devil on my shoulder was too full to talk. Next time.

My friend Dheeraj (DJ Siren) was playing there that night. I've heard from several of my friends who are djs and big on music about how great this venue is. The sound system is great, and it just has an overall nice character and ambiance. Very chill, midly divey, but overall a great vibe there. Will definitely be going back there, this time with a beer and pizza on my mind.

Oh, and also, happy hour is great there. Pizza + Stella (or well drink) $8,
    amongst other deals.

I still head back to 'The 2' every once and a while, but every time I go I find myself slightly depressed. Since the original owners sold it, a lot of good has been done--they fixed the bathrooms (sort of), put in a massive sound system, and stopped the leaks in the ceiling.

But something intangible also changed--something I can't quite identify. It's not nearly as friendly as it used to be, and not nearly as diverse either. Perhaps I'm simply missing the familial vibe that once existed (the proprietors were good friends) but I feel like the thing made me fall love with this place has faded.

That said, Scott who works the door on the weekends is still the jam.

Great vibe. Intense thump from the speakers downstairs and friendly staff at the bar. A very nice hang out where one can pick up the latest in the city techno scene.  DJ rotation can be hit or miss. Anything from German dark techno to euphoric happy bounce of liquid drum-n-bass with some gibberish of 'uprising' label in between.   I even witnessed a long forgotten acid house of the 90's that brought back those last century memories of midwest rave scene.
No matter what branch of techno tree you sit on triple 2 is the venue  that shares the love of this ever expanding artery of Electronic dance music (EDM).

There is something strange and mysterious to me about the genres of music played here - I really don't get it - but it makes my dude happy and I like it when he's happy.

It's a small place with a dance space that I can sort of imagine being someone's converted basement. I don't know why that appeals to me. It just sort of does.

I met some really nice and friendly people here. I'm not quite sure if that's attributed to the music or the space (or both), but I'll take it either way. Meeting friendly people makes me happy.

On my last visit, I was starving, so I ordered one of the pizzas to share. It's nothing particularly fancy: It was thin but fresh, cheap, and sustained me until the next day.

So. This place has been under new ownership for a year now.
There are 2, count 'em, TWO dismal reviews during that entire new block of new Yelp reviews.
One sap, complaining about complimentary water, & the other crying about the drink prices.
Advice to them: Go home and drink from your faucet, and, you, cheapo, go to the Brown Jug and order yourself a 2 dollar can o' Pabst....!
My point. There are a bunch of great reviews, for this new-ish spot.
    Try it.
    Decide for yourself.
    It is.

An other great reason why I LOVE the tenderloin at night!!!

There was a cover here when I came but oh well, it made up for the cheap cheap PBR tall cans and cheap well drinks. The bar area is super tight but then you go to the end and take a few steps down and there's a big open dance floor with some hot DJ's spinning some dancey tunes.

We met a couple of friends here and spent the whole night in on the dance floor spilling our drinks and getting shitty.

    I love this place.

yeah well, this is the kind of place that i like to be myself in my wifebeater and jeans and get down.
All i want is to dance.
I don't want to worry about the cover, what i look like, what the crowd is like or what the music will be.
I ALWAYS feel happy, content, free, and maybe if i danced, exhausted when i leave.
the pizza looks and smells great, adding to the safe cozy bar sanctuary feel of the place.
    the barkeeps are great.

I had been meaning to come here for a long time due to the fact they have a lot of techno playing there and I love that. I had yet to actually go and make it happen though because there is always some other event going on that is more promising or safe or something.

Until last night, that is, when I stepped foot in there for my first time. I was going there from Nob Hill so I caught the 19 Polk bus there luckily. Once inside, I could not believe how tiny it is in there! I mean I thought it was small, but not that small. It is also ridiculously hot in there! I felt like I was going to die once I did any dancing at all. Drink prices, not good at all, especially for all of the other issues going on in there, please give me a cheap drink option. The staff, nice to me because I knew them, but very rude to the rest of the party who were the group holding the party. They were yelling and cussing at everyone at close time. I mean, I can understand them trying to get people out, but literally telling people to get the fuck out as they turn on the lights was a bit over the top, methinks.

Then, the worst case scenario possible happens after leaving the doors. Bums are begging for nickels right outside, people doing crack and all kinds of bad things. Not even safe at all and especially not when you are leaving a bar and not sober. So, you think any cabs will stop for you? No. Not a single cab and they were empty and said "for hire". The group had to stick together and ride the N Owl bus.

The sound system was the best part of the bar and their beer was cold, I will give them that much. It would take a really good night of music to make me go back there and that probably would not even do it. Not with the heat and the drink prices and not being to get a cab afterwards and being in the worst neighborhood in the city.

I went here for my friend's birthday party (her boyfriend's friend owns 222 Hyde) on a Thursday night. It's a really great spot given the sort of sketchy location, I wouldn't have gone in here otherwise. I love the exposed brick, and the downstairs dance/lounge area is a good size and has clean, accessible bathrooms.

The sound system here is also really amazing, and the DJ set up is nice. It makes for a fun, intimate environment.

However, I will say that they need to update their Yelp advertisement for happy hour. The special on Yelp reads: "$8 Pizza and Draft Beer Combo for Happy Hour 5-9 PM Tuesday - Saturday!" which is a little bit of false advertising. I ordered 2 pizzas and expected to get them both for $8 plus 2 free beers. After ordering, I was told that the only kind of beer I could get on draft was budweiser. Meh, but okay, I'll give that to them.

I was then charged full price for the pizzas because the bartender didn't tell me that the $8 special ONLY applies to a plain cheese pizza. Which isn't even on the chalkboard menu. There is nothing on their website or Yelp that gives this detail... it was only an extra $2 so I didn't make a huge deal out of it, but I was a little annoyed.

The only other reason that this place loses 1 star is because it charges $6 for a beer. Come on. In the tenderloin I expect to pay a little less ... but it was fine because I was in good company :)

I think I'm a reasonable man. Probably more reasonable than most people out there. But when the first thing you hear when you walk into a bar is:

    "AAAAAAAYYYYYYYYY.........HEY YOU!!!!!! AYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!

    The shit hits the fan.

So I get to Club 222 around 11:30 on a Friday night w/ a friend. Security checks ID and I'm let in. Then I hear this wretched screaming in my direction.

    *aforementioned screaming*
Rude Screamer (RS): There is a cover. *blank stare*
Me: ....well what is it? (am I supposed to guess how much to pay or is this guy going to tell me)
Rude Screamer: $5, your friend just got in free.
    Me: (So what?)
    *contemplates leaving...pft..grudgedly hands over a $5*
Rude Screamer's friend: Your the BEST doorman ever :)

W.....T.....F?!?! No really...how would a bad doorman act, if that constitutes the "BEST"?

Ok, a few things about the scenario:
    1. The place didn't have that many people there, so I was definitely not trying to "sneak in" w/ out paying a cover. I just didn't know there was one, especially since my friend just walked right in w/ out paying.
    2. There was no music at the time and the bar chatter was not too loud. There was no need to scream at me...that is unless you wanted a shitty review :-\
    3. What screaming can do, a tap on the shoulder and a "Yo dude, there is a $5 cover." can do better.
    4. RS was not seated at a table by the door as most cover collectors are. He was seated at the bar talking to his friend w/ his back to the door. So I'm supposed to somehow know he is collecting a cover?

Aside from flakers/laggers being my pet peeve, getting yelled/screamed at is a very close second. -4 stars.

Management of Club 222, if your contemplating a "downsize" I came there on 1/9/09 at 11:30. I suggest the doorman that night gets 86ed quick.

On that magical morning I moved to the TL I could not believe my luck. A mere 0.7891 blocks from my favorite bar/club ever, 222 Hyde. I recall walking there on my first Friday out, full of glee, just to find that 222 had closed for good. Epic fail. Epic, epic fail.

Like a tanked relationship, I moved on. Well, I tried to. I went to other bars but I always remembered the sweet times I shared with 222. I made sweet love to other clubs, but in the heat of passion it was 222 that crept into my mind's eye. Would I ever recover from the loss?

Walking home the other day, passing by my old lover 222 Hyde, the door was ajar.... What??? I walk in and inquire, could it be?..... Lighting struck me, the news was that 222 lived once again.

I made contact just the other night, if only for a drink. To slowly rekindle my old affair, but the cover was $10? The door man JB Rap was having none of it, he let me in to have my beverage, to acclimate myself to my old home. "Ahhhhh" I sighed, just like old times. The music thumping, the drinks strong.

Something about this establishment makes me want to stay forever. I never wanted to leave in the first place but it closed on me, a friend struck down in their prime. The door man JB Rap, was a sign of the good times to come. He was funny and knew how to take care of a customer. I really only wanted a drink, it was late, so he let me slide on the cover. He was well within the bouncer code to tell me to get lost if I didn't want to drop a $10 on the door.

Word has it the pizzas are still on point. You can still purchase highchairs and VHS tapes on the block. The sound system pounded at my skull louder yet clearer than I recall. The plumbing in the bathroom now works!

If you're a possible stalker of mine this is honestly the best location for you to lay your trap. Now that 222 is back in business I don't really feel the urge to go anywhere else.

    Awww yeah!
I was sad when The Top closed down. I was sad when the Sunset Party guys had there last party of the season. What happens if I get the urge to throwdown on a Sunday night?!?

Enter 222 Hyde. It's an old down and out bar in the TL. You can tell there is a lot of history in there. Back in the day, it used to be the Blackhawk, a sick jazz club in the 50's and 60's. The new owners bought it in April 04'. Downstairs in the main dancefloor space  it feels like the downstairs of Deco- tight and cozy;) I liked the crowd and I liked that fools danced. Not just sat around posing.

Bionic is every Sunday. Go, these guys have been throwing this party for years.

I wanted to go dancing last night, and the DJ at the Transfer was abysmal; I couldn't even work up a hip shake.

I was drunk enough to brave the yawning hell mouth outside 222.  Despite the crackhead gauntlet, I really like this place; it's set up really well, and the dance cave is both intimate and spacious.

A cautionary note:  maybe you hipster kids shouldn't roll in the Tenderloin.  Amused as I was by your glow stick antics (and I don't care what you say, we KNEW how to party in Ohio), you have to leave by 2.  So, you're still feeling all happy and loving and the next thing you know, you're spooning with the naked homeless guy while a hooker brushes your hair.

And then there's a blurb in the Chronicle about some unnamed kid (they have to notify the family first) in a dumpster on Hyde Street.

    Stay off drugs, mmkay?

Not necessarily situated in the best of locations, 222 is nevertheless an excellent place to meet for drinks (and now with a full bar, woohoo!).

They have some basic but creative and very tasty food you can order at the bar (I am a big fan of their pizzas) or eat in the back dining/party room.

Ask for Joe or Bianca when you go, and tell 'em Nish sent you!

I really wavered as to how many stars to give this place: on the one hand, I wanted to give it one star just to mess with the emotions of Aiden B. (scroll down) who bought me and Ed here and who loves it so much OF COURSE I can' t resist wanting to give this place a bad review.

But, I must be true to my heart and honestly this is actually a really cool bar and gives me serious NYC bar cravings with it's mega urban location (smack dab in the middle of the TL) and dark, fantastically lit, sexy interior.  And lest you think you are living in some hipster version of Sex and The City and get too pleased with yourself, if you get rejected by the object of your affection, you can eat away your emotions with their cute little gourmet-ish pizzas made in a convection oven. Luckily, that didn't happen to me. But you know, it's nice to know that it's available.

I was a bit wary of this place as we arrived at the door.

    A. It wasnt on the dive bar crawl agenda (which was the purpose and theme of this particular night), and it wasn't a dive....but being as I am a group consensus type of gal, and everyone seemed pretty jazzed to check out a new place and break up the monotony of the dive bar atmosphere I decided what the hell, lets do this!

    B. I needed to bust out my Mexico haggling skills for the first time since college because they wanted to charge us $5 a head to have one drink at their all but empty establishment. When I said no they tried to bargain me down to $25 for the group of about 20 of us. I said no again before they realized it might be good business to let us in.

Once we got past these minor details I came to find out this place is pretty cool. Bar upstairs, reasonable drink prices and what appeared to be food service of some sort. Further back, past the bar was a staircase to a back lower level complete with DJ, dance floor and some cozy seating.

I will be back to see what this place is all about when I have more time than the one drinks worth I was able to devote to this establishment on this particular evening.

    1. Only 5 dollars for a mixed drink
    2. PBR is $2
    3. Tab minimum is $20

Lights Down Low happens every 2nd and 4th Fridays, which is indie electro fusion with a bit of disco beats on the side. The overall lay out of the 222 is lounge style with a bit of grime thrown in. Be warning,  the bar area is a bit of a squeeze but the service is definitely on the better side. Drinks are made quick with a no nonsense attitude from the bartenders. Dance floor, seating and bathrooms can be found on the lower level.

In my book, 222 is a full of potential. It's good place to kick back with my friends when I want to indulge in good conversation but still has the ability to handle my fancy footwork when I want to dance the night away.

Best fucking bar in the Tenderloin!
I loved every second I spent here.  I remember it was pretty small and crowded, but the bartender was pretty chill.  They were holding some sort of charity and were giving out free shots for anyone donating towards their cause.

It may be hipster central, but everyone was pretty nice.  No bullshit pretention that I expect from most hipster hubs in LA.  Cool people, cool music and super fucking strong shots...no wonder I can't remember any more details to yelp.

Morning. I walk to where I left the car.

A particular pedestrian lane, their naked trees with leaves falling are crispy as I step through. I hear them crunch. I wait for my chest to loosen up, fill with fresh air. I had Parliaments last night-- and I do not smoke.

    I had started at 222.
Where a fellow said, "I like your red cardigan."
I said, "The lighting in here is red. It's an explosion of red-colors."

It could have made me uncomfortable but I felt like dancing.
And I do not usually like dancing or all the attention.

The couple times I've been here, the crowd has been so awesome. Cool,  easy to get along with people that want to drink and dance and NOT grind on your ass.

It's super small and gets hot FAST. It's also near impossible to get a cab after last call.

The DJs play eclectic grooves, and I think they make pizza behind the bar or something. Serious booty shakin!

I stumbled into 222 Hyde for the first time on Friday night, and I have to say it was pretty fun.

Warning, it was a super super hipster crowd. Mind you, I am not a hipster, but sometimes they are fun to watch, and by golly, they sure were on Friday. Like, it was so hipster that there were two guys wearing the same outfit, of riding pants, suspenders, and mullets. But it was great people watching (There was also a glittered, spandexed, and blond wigged tranny complete with full beard), $2 PBR, and Bloc Party Remixes. I liked dancing in the basement in the back, it reminded me of the east coast for whatever reason.

It's totally in the ghetto, and you can't smoke a cigarette (not that I do) without getting harassed 15 times, but  all in all it was good times.

I have been to 222 several times and its a cool spot to chill out, listen to local DJ's, and catch a drink. Really, if it were not for other friends, supporting their events, and so on. I probably would not spend too much time here. To me it is pretty much a average location and great for a few drinks and then moving on to other spots.

Don't get me wrong, this is a cool spot. I really dig the setup in this place. However it is rather small and it does get super thick in there. I am not one to complain about small bars but sometimes it is overwhelming and navigating between the bar and back room, both super small, is a bit of a cluster fuck.

However, that aside, this place is a avg spot to chill out and peep local talent.

new owners: they are charging $5 for a CAN of TECATE.

    FIVE DOLLARS

    FOR A CAN OF TECATE

    really?

part of the orignial charm of the old 222 was that it was slick & clubby, but it had elements of your favorite dive bar.  It was a successful experiment in alchemy.  now they're messing with that combination and I fear it's goal is a different clientel.  not excited.

    What a great spot!

It looks like a little dive bar, but then you get inside, and see that there's a dance floor a half-flight down.  2$ PBRs are good too.    And they make REALLY good pizzas!

I accidentally had one of the best nights of my life ever.  For real.

UPDATE:  went back in and had another good time!  Bianca, the owner, rules.

I was in here last night(8/26/11) with my friends and it wasnt crazy crowded, music was good and we piled all our stuff on the sofa and danced next to it, sadly I left sight of it for 2 mins to use the restroom and some a%$#$le walked out with my bag!!!!  and neatly put my jacket on top of the other bags making it seem everything was the way as we left it, what a jerk! that bag had my school book, reading glasses my wallet and then he went on to civic center bart station and charged$600 on my cards for clipper..I would never return to this place ever, cause who ever walked out with my stuff looked like a decent person. so watch out ladies, there is creep hanging out in that place!!

Bar, long narrow might have to move folks out of the way before making it toward the end of the bar. Small quaint good place to put away a couple of drinks.

Dance floor...is this what they are calling it now? Picture a low ceiling garage in any average San Franciscans older styled home.  Uneven pavement , awkwardly placed wood/ cement pillars, dirt exposed floor, small encloves used for seating.

I could imagine this place for small meet ups with drinks for a couple  folks, but for the way it's  dance party utilized nowadays... bring your own oxygen mask. No Joke.

Bar=Yes, Dance Club=No, unless you are into dancing in small confined no bigger than your average sized San Francisco bedroom with 25-35 other people, and furniture.

When you enter 222 it looks like a seemlingly normal bar. At the back of the room is a red light.

"Is it the bathroom?" you muse.

You wander over and discover that no, that red light leads you into a underground necropolis-like dance floor!

222 is wonderfully dirty, the music's just fine, and the gender ratio seems to favor everyone. The only downside is that it sits in the TL.

$6 for a greyhound ("my" drink these days) and I can't complain.  In my experience, SF greyhounds tend to run between $5 and $8 so at 222 Hyde they are on the lower end of the cost continuum.  This is favorable.  The door dude and bartenders are uber friendly.  This, too, is favorable.  I love this place already.

When you enter this venue, it looks like a regular bar and a cramped one at that.  The space between the bar counter and the wall is enough for 2 1/2 people to stand shoulder-to-shoulder.  This means that when it's poppin', you need to be ready to slither through the crowd if you expect to get from one end to the other in a timely fashion.

Now that you've slithered through the crowd with quick twists, turns, and squats, and the front door is now a distant memory, consider yourself warmed up for the sweat fest you are about to encounter.  These mysterious stairs you see take you down...into a dungeon?  We'll find out! Step, step, step...and here we are...a basement party!  A basement party is the best way to describe this small dungeon deep in the hollows of 222 Hyde.  When I was here Friday, it was packed and the sound system was pretty impressive.  I'll definitely be back to boogie.  222 Hyde is my new favorite place.

I had to perform some massive pizza surgery when I got home. A little too much cheese, way too much oil. Lots of paper towels were sacrificed in the procedure. Don't worry Gavin, I composted.

But I don't fault 222. They made it just as the menu board promised. And when I couldn't choose between two good looking pies (the 222 with pears and walnuts and a standard margherita), the friendly bartender offered to make one half and half. I appreciated that.

So not exactly a healthy yelper's preferred destination for pizza, but still plenty to like.

I like the concept, I like the decor, the basement space rocks and the musical events are creative and interesting.

Sadly however, the bar service was uninterested at best. After a long wait (yo, I'm a patient chap, in no hurry & I empathize with a bartender's FridayNight workload), my mojito was 5 minutes into preparation when the bartender lethargically ambled over to announce that there was no more mint. *sigh*  11:30pm on a FridayNight, outta mint in a littlearsebar maybe 1/3 full ... hmmm.

    otherwise, we're cool. 4 stars!
