I've seen the artisan bakery many times in downtown edwardsville, but never been inside. This morning I met with a friend for coffee and, arriving early, I purchased a turkey jack croissant. The pastries are gorgeous works of art and love and the turkey jack was delicious. Just right for breakfast! The staff was incredibly friendly and warm, but the coffee was what really blew me away. I will probably dream of their delicious house blend tonight: so smooth and rich. I'm used to the prices at kruta bakery in collinsville, so these were a little high for me (read: normally priced; kruta is super cheap). Delightful place; I will surely be back.

*Did you know that 222 Artisan was started by Matt H., the same guy who roasts Goshen Coffee, the area's only 100% organic coffee, which is poured at Pi, Erato, and several other fine dining establishments?
* Did you know that 222 Artisan serves up some tasty sandwiches with bread baked in house? I'm working my way through the "signature sandwich" menu, and recommend that you try the aioli or olive tapenade in place of mayo or mustard - both are very good.
* Did you know that 222 Artisan serves a couple of killer salads? There's the "House" - spring greens, croutons, and candied walnuts, or the "Spinach" - spinach (of course!), dried cranberries, blue cheese, and toasted almonds. I need to ask more about what's in the fabulous dressings. They taste like herbs in butter and bacon.
If you're going to try 222 Artisan, then you CANNOT be in a hurry. There is one line, one cash register, and one preparation speed, and it is not fast. I've tried phoning in my order. Often I still end up waiting in line to pay. But I keep going back because the product is memorably good.
When your yelp app map shows John H. @ 222 Artisan, you may think, "Geez, what's he doing chunking up on cinnamon rolls AGAIN?!" But, really, I'm probably picking up a sandwich, or drinking the best coffee in the St. Louis area. Moonstone should be called "John Stone": it's my favorite blend.Listed in: E'ville Restaurants, Down on Main Street, Bike Paths of Madison Co., Best Part of Wakin' Up, Lunch Lady Land

This place just keeps getting better. 3 new reasons:
1.fWeek-day breakfast special. Bring your own travle mug and you get your coffee for free if you buy a pastry.
2. Biscuits and gravy on Sunday - some of the best I've ever had. Bet you can't finish a plate alone!
3. Pizza Friday - Oh how I wish I had discovered these sooner!!2 Previous Reviews: Show all »

I had these AWESOME fruit pockets with a type of cream cheese stuffing. It was heaven on Earth, The coffee was incredible. Seating was limited. But I was able to grab a patio seat on a glorious fall morning in St. Louis.

I stopped in after practice Saturday morning, on my way to meet my travel buddy, new Yelper, Molly Z, in Hamel, IL so we could make our way up to Chicago.
Its these kind of places that really make me wish I was a sophisticated coffee drinker. I mean I like it okay, but I also like water and its free. I mainly reserve it for days at work when I went out the night before and drives where I find myself dozing, like this morning, thank you Circle K.
So what I did order. A cheese danish and an almond croissant. Both were delicious. The cheese danish was like none I have ever had before. The cheese blended in somehow with the pastry and I couldn't tell what was cheese and what wasn't but it was all delicious. I have no more words to describe it, it was so good. The croissant was nice and flaky. I didn't really get any of the almond, I don't think. It was for Molly and she said it was delicious as well. They have a little bit of a selection. I will definitely be making some trips back here. The quiche looked especially delicious. I'd like to order a coffee drink and have a seat in the store next time.Listed in: Halloween 2010

i spent 3.5 years in Europe enjoying the best pastries man has to offer. Since returning about 1.5 years ago, I have been searching for something/anything that could compare. Behold!
The sandwich and salad menu is rather uninspiring, but the coffee and pastries do more than compensate. Thanks goes out to another business that has put some passion into what they do. Artisan is indeed the correct label.
I can't stress enough how good the coffee is. -

Best coffee in all of Edwardsville and well beyond. Their bread is the freshest and best artisan bread around. Once you have bread from here you will wonder why you ever put up with that chewy garbage from the supermarket - you know, the ones in the artisan-looking paper bags. You'll never go back to those.
We also ordered a chocolate ganache cake, a carrot cake (during Matt-the-coowner's birthday month) and a chocolate sheet cake. All were to die for. The friends that had the cakes were beside themselves and had no idea it existed until then. One even had a wedding cake emergency and 222 came through for them, though I don't think they do wedding cakes per se.
Get the Tattoo Blend coffee. You'll thank me for it later.
And whatever you do, don't ask Matt if they have glazed donuts or sprinkles or something dumb like that. That crap is down the street. This place is for cherry birdhouses, almond pastries, those incredible salami and cheddar croissants, and Adam Bombs.
Go. And go early. I promise you will be hooked. -

Amazing. I agree with all previous reviews and will only add that you need to come for lunch as well. I am hard pressed to pick whether I prefer the everyday sandwiches and fresh made soup or Friday Pizza day. No matter what day you come you will be happy to have made the trip.
Obviously grab some coffee and pastries on your way out. They are never disappointing. -

Yes! Yes! Yes! The ONLY decent coffee, bread and pastries to be found in the Metro East. Outstanding coffee roasting, beautiful baked goods. I drive 20 miles to get their beans. Thank God for these crazy, beautiful people.

I was really surprised with 222 Artisan Bakery. I had the Ben sandwich, mainly because 222 was voted as having the best croissant in the St. Louis area in the RFT and the croissant is the bread for this sandwich. I had that, their 1/2 salad, and a cup of coffee for lunch. Everything was amazing. The sandwich was wonderful. One of them sandwiches that you eat in smaller bites just so it lasts longer. The salad was one of the best I had in a long time, and I'm not a huge salad guy. The coffee is top-rate! Quite possibly the best cup of coffee in town. This is coming from a guy that frequents another coffee shop in town, too. A little pricey, but well worth it.

The 222 Artisan Bakey is a fairly new addition to the downtown Edwardsville landscape. And what an addition it is! 222 Artisan Bakery is the home of Goshen Coffee which is making its way across the river and into our fair city slowly but surely. If you can find it, buy it, you won't be dissapointed in its delicious, almost buttery, goodness. Also, 222 Artisan baker offers just about every sweet treat you can imagine, and they are all also delicious. This store keeps odd hours, to make sure you get there early.

I had one of their sandwiches as a lunch special (I think it was called "The Ben) here and it was very delicious. The meats and cheese had a very distinct taste and texture to it, where other places have a very bland flavor to their food. I also had one of their chocolate chip cookies and its great since it has the perfect sweetness to it.
Compared to other sandwich chains, the pricing is very competitive, and the service really can't be beat. The people working there are very friendly. -

This five star rating is for the pastries. Friends, these are pastries like you'd make them at home, if you knew how, which you probably don't. Butter, fresh fruit, real cream. Delicious! Honest! Worth spending my precious calories on! I'm also happy about the increased seating, and about the staff that is mostly very nice and thus can protect me from the grumpy and slightly intimidating owner, with his crabby, exasperated, humorless ways. His calling is just not in customer service. But whatever. He brought real pastry and nice fresh crusty bread to Main Street in my hometown, and I'm grateful forever! The bread is very good. Espresso is also delicious here.Across the street you'll want to sit and linger, but this is a perfect place to pick up treats to go.
