Review from Mireille M.

I purchased the Groupon deal of 10 classes for $35 -- it was an awesome deal!
Pros:
* They have parking available nearby (around the corner, validated) or in the back.
* Classes start at a reasonable time for people who have to commute from work. More gyms should have 6 or 6:30 classes. 5:30 is a bit too early and 7 PM is too late for me.
* The instructors and classes are great. I enjoyed the 2X2 with Heidi (she's got great energy), Kangoo & G3 classes with Jesse (you will hurt for a few days afterward), TRX with Eva (hard work out and the hour passes very quickly).
* The equipment is top notch. You don't see Kinesis machines in the "big box" gyms.
Cons:
* They need a water fountain downstairs. If classes are going on in both rooms upstairs, you have to take the elevator. Seems a little silly in a gym to take the elevator to get water or hit up the women's restroom.
* Unfortunately, the gym is a bit too far for me to really commit to the monthly membership otherwise it would make total sense. They do offer some class bundle purchases, which I will look into once my travel schedule gets a bit tamer. Those expiration dates really get me in trouble sometimes.
P.S. -- Because I bought the Groupon, I TOTALLY understand the hard sell. The whole purpose for a business to offer a deal on Groupon (or any deal site) is to get people into the doors -- it's up to the business to sell their services to the potential returning customers. Groupon or any deal purchasers should expect a hard sell! Memberships are how these businesses make money!Comment from Matteo B. of 220 Fitness 4/26/2012

I really like this gym! They had a lot of uncommon cardio & weight training equipment to use. If you are in Santa Monica or Venice and would like to find a gym to workout I recommend this place. The ambiance is uplifting feeling. The staff is very friendly and there is a lot of interesting things to keep your mind busy.
The only bad thing is that it is small so if there are to many people working out it would get a bit crowded. It was not crowded while I was there from 630am-1030am on a Monday.
It is also right next to the beach. Go have a great workout shower and hang at the beach :)Comment from Matteo B. of 220 Fitness 5/18/2012

How the hell does this place have almost 5 stars?
The gym is cramped. Main studio is small and stuffy.
There always seems to be a buttload of employees desperately trying to sell you something so they can keep their jobs.
I would rather go back to Equinox where they leave you alone to work out in peace.
Women's locker room is small and doesn't have much ventilation. The showers are located in front of the main door so whoever is walking by could probably get a good view of you getting out of the shower. -

I've been a member of this gym for 2 months and I love the small, neighborhood feel. It's definitely the smallest gym I've ever joined but thats where it's charm lies. The small class sizes rock (there been times where I'm 1 of 3 students) and you get a lot of attention from the instructor.
Awesome juice bar across the gym that's a great ending to a hard workout but that's a whole other review!Comment from Matteo B. of 220 Fitness 4/26/2012

My husband and I have been members at pretty much every big chain gym and have also tried out several boutique fitness joints. We're in between gyms at the moment, so I bought one of the Travelzoo deals to 220 Fitness thinking we'd add it to the rotation. We'd seen the gym many times before since we frequent the Main St. area and always thought this little gym was a bit odd with the DJ blasting music and the Kangoo jumpers running around town. But, we thought we'd give it a shot!
We met Matteo the owner and he showed us around the gym, some of the highlighted equipment, etc. We took one of the circuit training classes that night and it was pretty fantastic! The trainers and class instructors are the best around, you really can't get more top notch, highly qualified than here. It's kicking our butts. Literally. After we worked out, we ended up signing up for a membership and I'm glad we did.
Their equipment, while limited in quantity, is truly the best you can get even at the high end gyms. Even though it's a small gym, we've never had to wait for equipment, even in the major January rush season. The locker rooms are a bit small, but have steam showers and great products.
Everyone is super friendly, and we love the personal touch when the whole staff remembers you. That's the type of service you get a at a place like this! Major props to Matteo and his partners for establishing a fantastic gym. We're enjoying our time here and highly recommend anyone looking for some good workouts and attention to join!
Oh, and there is plenty of parking, we've never had an issue!Comment from Matteo B. of 220 Fitness 4/26/2012

I also purchased the Deal on Groupon...but had a much different experience. Instead of the 10 classes I was supposed to get for free, I was told it was better to get signed up for a month free pass. After taking a couple of classes, I realized this was not the place for me. The space is way too cramped and the classes were just OK. I notified them I wanted to cancel and they informed me I had to appear in person. I showed up in person and they told me I had to talk to a representative. I talked to a representative who told me he would cancel my account. 5 months later, I am still getting charges on my card from 220 Fitness. Unbelievable. Recently, the same guy I canceled with called me to tell me he could not process my card this month. Long story short....this place is a total scam. Apparently once you are sucked in you can never get out. There are much better gyms in the area, I suggest you go find one of those. If you do decide to sign up with them, do not, under any circumstances, give them your credit card information.

I bought a Groupon for 10 classes for $35. No question about it, this is a great deal. But what I didn't intend to buy was the hard sell that came with it. I've gone about 6 or 7 times now, and twice they have cornered me and tried to sell me monthly packages. That's not what I thought I was buying and it's really annoying.
Other than that, it's a nice gym. The classes are good, but not really conducive to my workout schedule so the combination or that and the annoyance of the hard sell will keep me from buying a membership. -

BEWARE!! The extreme hard sell is tough to take, but what's worse is that one of the managers of 220 Fitness was the manager of Powerhouse gym on Main street years ago, and they took membership money from people and disappeared suddenly, never refunding a cent. When I saw him walk in, that was it for me.
even when it's in writing that you'll get your money back, don't believe it. Month to month might be ok if you like the facility, but don't pay ahead.
The facility is small, with interesting cardio equipment and newfangled machinery. I'm kinda old fashioned, so it's not for me. -

This is a great gym. Its never packed, the equipment is rarely broken, its in a great location, the people who work there are cool and it has the best personal trainer ever (Evan Russo).
I had never worked with a real trainer before but after this experience my mind is made up. If you have a clear cut goal Evan will get you the results you need. His experience ranges from beginning stage medical rehabilitation to athletic performance enhancement and everything in between. He is great at putting together a work out that manages to include cardio, rehab, strength and lengthening in one circuit.
With only a month of steady sessions with Evan I met my goal, gained strength, flexibility and burned fat. Plus he isa really cool dude with a great future in the health and wellness industry.
If you go to get a free session ask for Evan!

This is a superb fitness facility. Their classes are well-thought-out, challenging, and seriously enjoyable. All of the instructors/trainers I have worked with have been really encouraging and truly interested in my well-being. I wish there were more classes in the afternoon and weekend evenings, but other than that, I have nothing but unrelenting praise for 220 Fitness.
Their facility is very neat and clean - they definitely make the most of their square footage, and the gym is designed for maximum creative use of the space. Gravity pilates classes, Kangoo, Boxing, Spinning, TRX - it's all here, and the trainers really know their stuff. There is no sadistic drill-sergeant attitude here, no weird side-eye from fellow clients, and NO gross pickup scene. I have thoroughly enjoyed the classes I have taken here, and all of the gym equipment is first-rate. TVs in the treadmills, YES. It's pretty amazing. Parking is in a lot about a block away, and the gym is right in the heart of Main Street Santa Monica, just a stone's throw from the beach. I love the atmosphere and style of the gym.
1. Parking: Good for its location. Easy to ride a bike or walk too
2. Atmosphere: Great
3. Workout Equipment: Innovative. They have some cool toys
4. Staff: Good. Knowledgeable and attentive.
5. Classes: Never taken one but I heard they were fantastic
6. Price: Good, considering the quality of the trainers they have its great for the area
7. Location: Amazing
Overall, I would definitely recommend joining the gym and taking advantage of some training sessions.
Hope to see you there.. -

I'm increasing the rating I gave them because Matteo (the manager) contacted me and addressed my comments. He also offered me a massage to make up for the one I had and told me that they have since created a newer and better massage environment. He also offered me a training session and a trial membership... I'm a little iffy about those last 2 because well I'm just not an "Athlete" or "trainer" type - so we'll see. I'm looking forward to the massage though - hoping to find a "go to" spot on the west side.

I passed by this high end center, looked around, and talked to a few members, when I was down south, looking to relocate. Nice fitness center, I have worked for and with some of the best, and this "gym" has the location and energy to go big. Wish I thought of it lol...I encourage anyone interested in a high end fitness environment to give it a shot, If I am lucky enough to get a place near by, I know it would be my training place of choice.

I've worked out at (and worked at) many of the high-end gyms in LA. Fancy equipment, towel services, great classes and experienced trainers are somewhat common. But the others lack one crucial component: FUN. 220 is fun. That's why I joined.
They've got an outdoor boxing area, huge tires to flip and plenty of space to have a fun, creative workout.
There's a sense of community here. They're constantly reaching out to locals, and you're always happy to see a familiar face. The staff, in my experience, is attentive, enthusiastic and responsive. I've made suggestions and they've actually been implemented. Imagine that!

This is a great gym. The owner, Matteo and his staff are second to none. I've been working out all my life and I can say for the 1st time, that the majority of the instructors and trainers look and act the part and will push you to your limits. It's not perfect, and does not have enough free weights, has only one beach press, which serves as a squat rack as well. But that isn't why I am here. If you want to pushed in a class environment, join. Don't be intimidated if you are not in the best shape either because the trainers are there to help and get you to your fitness goals. I trained with Wes for my free training session and he's solid. I've enjoyed some instructors more than others. Here is my list of favorites: Heidi, 2x2 Conditioning. Eva, TRX, Allie's spinning class, Jessie Spinning on Friday's and Dan's Boxing Class. Karoake spinning is held once per month and it's a must do!

Let me count the ways that I love this gym. I have worked out on and off for a large part of my adult life (and for high school sport too many years ago) but haven't had a similar 'gym' experience to 220 Fitness ever, and have been a so-called executive gyms.
- The staff is amazing in that they get to know your name firstly but secondly they love to see you successful in realizing your fitness goals. They want to transform you personally. Whatever the hiring formula they seem to only bring in the best in fitness pros and in personalities. You are not a member number here, but a member.
- This gym isn't just a big weight-room and in fact the actual weight lifting area is small. They help you reach our goals in two primary ways - fun classes and one-on-one training (they do have cardio equipment and weights too of course). The classes are excellent, full body, core focused (not body-building focused) for true strength and always at a pace that is heart pounding so you mix cardio in each workout they offer. (Spin is the exception to full body here, but man are the spin classes first rate, fun, and uber-challening if you want it).
- It wasn't long before I had to get personal training because this could only be as good based on my early impressions. They will work you and care to help you reach your goals with a constantly evolving mix of exercise and challenges. Workouts are never stale and is just helping me in so many ways (lost lbs, better tone, way stronger core, etc). They give a damn that you are your best. Thank you CC aka Charlene.
- Unique types of classes that can sound daunting, but are cool and the best of what exercise physiologists agree are currently the best for true fitness. Boxervate, Kickboxing, Rock n Roll Spin, Krank, Gravity, Kangoo bootcamp just to name a few. AWESOME workouts all.
I have had classes and interactions with Jen, CC, Saori, Aimee, and a few others and I can't say enough about what pros these folks are. If you live around Santa Monica, Venice, etc. give them a shot or you know what, don't - more space for the rest of us. Ha. -

It's not open yet, but LOVE, love their concepts and promotional classes that they are offering. Just too bad it's 30+ miles away from where I live :(
I tried the Kangoo Jumps Bootcamp/Run. I'm so happy that I've finally tried the class and the shoes. I'm almost ready to put the $$$ to purchase a pair of those shoes. That's how wonderful they are, but I digress, I am here to review 220. Aimee and her staff are wonderful. They're friendly, knowledgeable and just plain wonderful. I had a wonderful run, workout, and just plain fun. After the hour was over, I felt like we had just started and wouldn't have minded another hour...
Yah, I felt was on display, people were taking pictures of us, heckling, asking us what those were, and we were just making waves. But the workout was WONDERFUL! Email Aimee for their schedule and promo classes! I just signed up for another class! Can't wait.
Can't wait to see what the gym looks like. It's just too bad the gym is Santa Monica, and plain far for me! :( But you work out 2 blocks from the beach/Venice Beach. That is really FTW! Someday, I will live near you and will join the gym.... -

220 Fitness is an incredibly swank gym. This place is equipped with everything your typical fitness guru would love. It's like a miniature disneyland for the fitness nut. They have these crazy cable machines I have seen no where else. Punching bags, Kettle bells, spinning cycles with the arm spinners right next to them, rotating ladder machine, cute front desk staff and 220 branded weights for icing on the cake.

Awesome neighborhood gym. It's got the upscale quality of a corporate gym - think steam showers and high tech equipment like treadmills with televisions, mixed with the friendly, everyone knows your name feeling of your neighborhood Cheers! The staff is super friendly and the gym is clean. Downstairs you will find weights and machines, all bright and new. Upstairs is the spinning studio where you can try your arms at kranking, and a separate studio for all other classes. As mentioned bathrooms are clean and include steam showers and lockers. Outside downstairs you will find boxing bags and mats to spar on. The gym boasts 90 classes including the new kangoo jumps (and on a sunny day this class is held at the beach) that are all the rave. Matteo and company did well to make me feel at home here!

I have to share my experience of what turned out to be one of the best kangoo boot camp classes I've had so far at 220 Fitness. It starts with the instructor, Jesse. She's truly fantastic. All her classes are so rewarding especially her kangoo and core classes. She's imaginative and pushes you to do your best. She's tough but so much fun. She's got a great spirit and I often find myself smiling in between drills as she adds her own brand of humor to the class.
Today, after some great drills by the beach, she had us do an obstacle course of sorts where we ran around trees and up little hills. I've never experienced a more creative fitness instructor EVER. I've been a member of a gym for over 15 years at places like Golds, NY Sports Club, and Equinox. 220 Fitness is my favorite. EVERYONE is super friendly in a genuine way and the classes are fun and effective.
220 Fitness is worth at least a trial run and while you're there, be sure to take one of Jesse's classes. I'm hoping she'll teach spin soon!1 Previous Review: Show all »

my sister took me here while I was visiting. we went to the All Terrain class on Saturday morning. the class was fun & challenging (hamstrings still sore...) & small (8 people), so the trainer was able to check everyone's form, give encouragement, etc. would have loved a full hour instead of just 45 min, tho. the facility itself is great- clean & modern, lots of equipment for such a small space, but it does not feel cramped. tons of classes. it is a little "beautiful & fit young people's club," with everyone decked out in head to toe Lululemon, but I'll definitely work out here whenever I visit!

Dropped my membership here - for the cost I really expected the customer service to be better. My trainer was (and still is) fantastic and the only reason I stayed as long as I did. Was amazed that at one point I tried to park in the lot in a spot in which I had observed people parking previously and one of the management refused to let me, saying I had to park in another lot around the corner that would validate, but all he did was wave his hand in a general direction, not saying which lot, I ended up having to pay $7 for an hour at the only lot that still had spaces a couple of blocks away. In the meantime, management were parked in the lot adjacent to the gym, along with a huge truck belonging to the maintenance guy. In all the time I went there, the only thing I saw the maintenance guy take out of his truck was food so not really sure why it was so important for him to be parked there, pretty much taking up two spaces. Hint, during mid-day, employees shouldn't be taking up the parking in front of a business, forcing paying customers to go to other locations, it's not like there is a security issue as there is for late night or early morning employees - corporate businesses know this. It also didn't help that when my trainer was working with me, time after time another trainer would plunk his client down in the narrowest part of the gym for a full session, making it impossible for my trainer (or any other trainer) to give me access to multiple machines he wanted to use for my training. All in all, a good idea, but poorly executed.

I joined 220 Fitness in April of this year and have to say that this is the best gym I've ever been to equipment, class, and people wise and I've belonged to some pretty exclusive gyms previously. The facility is always clean and the locker rooms and showers are pristine. The classes are amazing and you will not find a better combination of cardio and stretching classes anywhere, whether it's Trent's All Terrain, Dan's Strengthen & Lengthen, Spin with Amber or Anja, Bike Pump with Saori, Yoga with Fountain and the list goes on and on.... Since the club is intimate, you can always provide feedback and comments and Heidi the group class director is super responsive and really listens to what members have to say about the classes. The personal trainers there are amazing as well and Liz, Matt, Tiffany and company will work with you on a one on one basis to set your goals and achieve them. One of the best perks of 220 is the amazing staff and owner that make you feel welcome from the moment you step into the club where Matteo, Randi, Bethany, Henry, etc make you feel right at home. But the most surprising to me and the X factor that I never experienced in any club before are the members themselves... you get to see the same people in the classes or the gym and I have made friends with people that I truly like and enjoy working out with. This makes the whole experience of the club facility, equipment, and classes even more fun and challenging at the same time. All in all 220 is "my gym" and I'm proud to be a member and spread the word about it!
