Speaking from the perspective of a past sponsored athlete, (and on behalf of the other athletes and serious gym-goers at 21st Century) I've been a satisfied member of this place for a long time, and will continue to be as long as I live in the area. Here's why:

    1. They have great hours.
    2. They have a helpful, down-to-earth staff.
    3. They don't bug me to buy their stuff.
    4. They have top-notch equipment.
    5. It's a local business and tries to help our local athletes, etc..
    6. (AND MOST IMPORTANTLY) They have the right mixture of what it takes to actually get the body I want.

I know there are gyms out there that are newer, bigger, etc--but I don't go to a gym because it looks good (which this gym does). I go to a gym because I care more about ME wanting to look good, feel good, and perform well. 21st Century gives me that, because it has the right floor layout which doesn't make me feel like I'm working out in a Costco, it has tons of hand-selected equipment that target the muscles I'm trying to work, and this gym doesn't break the bank like the other gyms out there that charge three times as much money. That means I can A: spend more time in the gym because I feel more comfortable there. B: I can work my body more efficiently because the machines and equipment were selected BY Athletes and fitness professionals. And C: I can save money and use it to invest in gym clothes, gear, and in my diet and nutritional needs ( Diet is 80% of the effort to get in shape).

The result is me both looking and feeling the best I can, and that's why I love this gym. Bottom line--this gym gives me what I need to actually get something out of being a member at a gym.

    Update pending:

Before you read this: I spoke to David, the office manager on 4/26/12. He stated that my cancellation was not input in to the system and they would be cutting me a check for the mis charge, mailing it to me, and sending me a cancellation letter. If and when I get this check and cancellation, I will be changing my review to a more positive one.

This is an edit of my last review. After quitting this gym in writing they charged me another month's payment more than 30 days after my written cancellation notice. I called and asked for the office manager, David. He took care of business and cut me a check. Hopefully I won't be charged anymore monthly dues. If you have a billing issue talk to David. He gets 5 stars.

However, the reason I am giving three stars is due to another reason. Once a year this gym has a 19$ "improvment fee." Its assesed in March in addition to monthly dues. When I signed up and signed my contract, the fee was crossed out on the contract by the girl who signed me up. She waived the fee for me. Guess what...I was still charged for the fee. I went by the gym and they stated they "would review" this. I took a photo of the contract with the crossed out annual $19 fee to cover my rear. No refund for the $19 from the club. I actually had my cc company chargeback the bogus fee becuase as part of my contract the fee was waived.

So in conclucsion-David gets a great review. He is the one person at 21st century who has taken care of things in a straightforward, no BS manner. But I am docking 2 stars because I was billed for charges that were clearly not in my contract.

One more suggestion: Get an automated pool sweeper. Put it in the pool during closing hours (weekend nights etc.) It will do wonders to clean up the mini debris in the pool. Although I never got sick in the pool...the chemicals are maintained etc., It could be cleaner.

I know there are a ton of gyms around nowadays, some equipped with state-of-the-art, fancy-pants machines, but they just don't compare. I've been a member at the 21st Century for about 15 years now and I have never had anything but a positive experience. People go there to work out, not to "peacock", the staff is amazing, both friendly and very helpful, and the members are like a family. It just makes me feel good going into a place I know I can be completely myself and feel totally comfortable working out!

I have no problems with this gym.  Yeah it is a little run down and old, but who cares! I'm not going to a gym because its pretty, I'm going because it has what I need to get my lazy butt in shape.  As for a review I read about a smell coming from the cracked cushions, I have yet to smell anything rank at this gym (Other than a few smelly people)  I'm pleased with my decision to join this gym. The people are friendly, they have what I need, and I like that they are open 24 hours most of the week!

I enjoy going to this gym. After an injury, my doctor suggested swimming and gentle arm movement, so I joined (paid the first and last) and have been swimming several times. I have only once had to wait for a lane to open up, usually it is not crowded. When I choose not to swim, there is a little upstairs work out room that is perfect for me, all the equipment that I could want (and some that I have no idea how to use). I did not find this gym to be stinky or dirty like some of the other reviewers - it is just not new, but it suits my needs just fine.

The customer service here is horrible and has been for some time apparently (see the review below from a customer who specifically quit this gym due to her mistreatment).  All I have to say that if you care where your hard-earned money goes, try one of the many, wonderful, other gyms in Cotati/Rohnert Park, there are MANY.

Like any conveyor belt style gym, this one stands par.

Except I only signed up for 3 months and they keep trying to debit my account.

Letters telling them to stop go unanswered.  Telephone calls are not returned.

    Assholes.

I am a swimmer and it is the only gym around with an indoor pool that is open for lap swimming 24 hours a day most of the time. The pool is a bit dated as is the gym and it does need a good thorough scrubbing but it is a  pool that is maintained fairly well though it is frequently below the advertised 80 degrees. I enjoy my swims there and go as often as I can manage. The staff have always been VERY friendly and I believe it is owned by a local man who is NOT a gangster nor trying to cheat everyone!
The new outside paint is nice, now lets see some work on the inside!
    thanks....

This place is ok...it has a slightly grungy feel, and when you use the workout machines you get a sweaty whiff coming from the cracked padding (yuck)...It is in a really convenient location. The people a the front desk are usually very nice, but that can only take you so far.

I've been a member of this club 3 times: once when they first opened, and I got suckered into the highest possible member rate; I was 21 or 22 years old. But, I used the club and loved it until I moved. Moved back, rejoined. Better rate, because I was older and not such a suckah. Let the membership lapse.
Joined the other day; I'm getting really old now and so is the gym (not really, but I am almost 50). I let the gal run through all of the scenarios and politely declined to comment much until she showed me ALL of them. I now have the best rate ever, in all of the 20 yrs and 3 mmbrshps. Also, for the first time, I actually did that little intro thing with a trainer; the one that comes with signing up.
I had an "uh-oh" moment when this young man walked up for my session. How would he know how to assist an aging woman with her modest fitness goals? Lou Ott (the trainer helping me) was great and if I had the budget to sign up for the 3 visit deal; I'd do it in a heartbeat because he didn't sell me short on the intro and paid attention to my specific problem spots (but was kind enough to let me point them out). As it is, he helped me figure out machines and settings. He demo'd how to use them and then had me try. Then he pushed me to try 10 more. You can't beat that. I have a goal to get 3 sessions in the future, once I use the gym for awhile, just to keep me motivated.
So far, so good. My legs feel like cement everytime I stand up and my arms are a little sore. I know I got a good, healthy and balanced workout today. I just wonder how that's gonna work out when I go to my pole-fitness class tonight...!

I love this gym. The equipment is great, classes are fun and staff is super friendly.  Its a place where everyone knows you by name. Its open pretty much 24 hours- even the pool area! And its a local business, definitely the best gym in sonoma county.

I signed up for a membership here after taking a tour and feeling like the price was a good deal. Well, I was wrong. The staff was completely rude and I was SERIOUSLY pissed when they charged my bank account and extra $9 a year for absolutely no reason or without any consent of mine. I went in to talk to woman who worked at the front and she was the biggest bitch. What a way to treat a customer. After speaking with her I decided about a week later to cancel my membership. I couldn't stand looking at that woman when I came in anymore. She completely ruined the whole experience for me. I would never recommend this gym to anyone I know.

I have been a member at this gym for about 5-6 years (off and on). I have mixed feelings about this gym though.
The gym has everything you need to get a workout. Weights are sufficent, lots of free weights and machines. Nice mix of cardio machines, they just added 8 new machines. There is an areobics studio and they have some good yoga and step classes. There is also spin classes (the bikes are not the best quality). One of the main reasons I go to this gym is because it is close and convienient. The dues are about $39 bucks a month ( average I would think). Also I have met and maintained a rapport with a lot of the members. I also share this gym with a few of my girlfriends. Those are all my biggest perks of this gym.
But....there are some things that I really don't like! The place is dirty, the floor looks like it needs to be cleaned all the time, the restrooms are in need of a major renovation, i probably will never ever take a shower in there shower, shoes are a must! The papertowel dispensers in bathrooms and throughout the gym are always empty. Sometimes equipment ( like weight balls & floor mats) really need to be updated. Sometimes the gym gets really busy and when ur lifting weights it feels like you are standing on top of one another if you want to use the mirrors.

I have tried to leave here but the other gyms haven't worked out. I was at University of Sports, Stan Benetts before it was planet fitness. U of S had great spinclasses and circut training/bootcamp. They have an indoor soccerfield which everyone played on. Planet fitness is cardio central, not many choices for weights and they actually discouraged heavy lifting.

It's just 'fine'. Plenty of cardio equipment, and the weights are functional. The problem? DIRTY. Much of this place needs to be torn apart and cleaned under. Staff was friendly, music had a good variety.
