San Francisco is the cradle of craft brewing in America and it seems appropriate that 21st Amendment should create such fine beers and have such haute cuisine (by brew pub standards).

I pretty much sampled their entire offering of ales from the Blonde all the way down to their darkest IPA and was extremely pleased with their balancing act of malt, hops and other flavors such as rye and coffee. These guys really know what they're doing with the brews.

I also had the vegetarian gumbo which was quite tasty and really went well with the red IPA.

So to be honest I had high hopes about this place. We went on a Saturday night and were joining a few friends. The atmosphere was good, but the service, food and drinks left something to be desired.

Being a brewery I was expecting to enjoy me a tasty hefeweizen. Unfortunately they only had strong beers and IPAs. So I fell back to my tried and true standby, scotch.

12 year old scotch on the rocks: easy... glass beaker... 1-2 reasonably sized ice cubes... a few sips of scotch...

What I ended up getting was a small shot glass filled with ice otherwise used for only margaritas and soda and a little scotch filling the voids...

I also ordered the Reuben, but somehow ended up getting the veggie burger delivered to me. My friend's jerk chicken was on the verge of still clucking in some areas.

At this point I was too tired to fight.

Got some in n out on the way home. At least they greeted me with a smile and a "have a good night" as I pulled away.

Beers here were really good and I liked the sunny, open atmosphere. We sat on a Sunday, at a little table near the window and had a great time sampling all the on-tap brews. People nearby were ordering brunch and their plates looked pretty good, although we didn't eat any food and I've heard the food here is mediocre (not surprising - that's usually the case I've found, at brew pubs).

I'd definitely go back for beers. I especially enjoyed the Big Bear Black Stout and the Fireside Chat seasonal.

I would like to try again but not sure if I would make it a destination spot.  The food was good, but I got the fish and chips and was very surprised by the small size of the fish pieces, probably the smallest pieces I've ever had at a place, especially in the city.  The taste was ok, nothing that knocks your socks of though.  The calamari was pretty good, but lacking the POW seasoning that so many places have in the city.  The fries are very good and I def would like to try the pizza since I kept seeing many of the customers eating it.  If you are in the area i would suggest going, especially if you want to watch a game.

Had to resist pulling a Larry David and bussing my own food to my table. It was twice as tempting because my table was 3 feet from the counter, and I was sure it was our order, getting cold. It's still an interesting question, is it rude to do so? I mean, you're only helping right? Well it didn't turn out so well for Larry David, I thought it'd be different here since we are far far away from LA and those types of people, alas I resisted the temptation heh

I had the reuben. Our waiter-who was very nice-said it was one of the better sandwiches (recommended over the roast beef). Was kinda dissapointed then, since it was suppose to be one of their best. It wasnt bad, it just wasnt an amazing reuben..I guess it looked/sounded better than it was. Was at least glad they did not pour thousand island dressing on like there was no tomorrow.

Had the blond straw beer. Very mediocre. Dunno why their watermelon wheat which I've had at other places wasnt offered, maybe seasonal. Rest of beers are ultra hop rape. I agree with Dave S, why cant american microbreweries make some nice balanced beers like the germans or belgians? For some reason feel the need to add a buttload of hops to make a good beer...not necessarily true.

In another review, I wrote about starting off my weekend by picking up the young New Yorker and finding myself on the bathroom floor. That was just the beginning of the weekend, and the result of getting way too comfortable with Jose... yes, I'm talking tequila, or as I am now fond of calling it, ToKillYa.

So the middle of this story contains a lot of wine, one eyed driving, crabs, a mansion, Russians, models, hot tubs, hotel rooms, pantries and panties, mysterious friends, late morning parties, etc. Yes, it was one of those weekends. I'll save the gory details for another day, but by the end of this wild weekend we needed grease, so off to the Ramp for burgers we went. And just to level off the haze we all ordered drinks, which we all drank, except one. Yes, the New Yorker left his soldier standing and for that we would all have to pay.

That is how I found myself at the 21st Amendment at the end of a long weekend finishing with how I started. Taking shots of tequila.

Place use to be great when I was regularly there (about 2003 - 2008). Great beer, great burgers, great apps.  Definitely 5 star material.

Unfortunately, I was there tonight for their annual strong beer month.  Paid $9 for beer and $11 each for average buffalo wings and below average calamari. Some poor sap asked the bar tender if there was any happy hour specials and was told "no happy hour during strong beer month."  I walked out dropping almost $50 on two beers and two apps.

It's a shame...strong beer month use to be a celebration of great beer and community.  Now it's just a celebration of greed.

Beer was decent so I gave it two stars instead of one.  Got the triple crisis, which was an imperial IPA.  Not too hoppy, which was surprising for a triple that's 11% ABV.  Not worth $9 though.

    Likes:
The crowd, which is mixed along various demographic axes.
     The location.

Not dislikes, but not likes either:
The beer - again with the super hoppy stuff.  Why can't just one American brewery brew beer the way they do in Belgium, Czech Republic, Netherlands, ... ??  (And don't say "New Belgium" they seriously don't get it.) Still, I liked their Back in Black - good flavour and finish without having that punch-you-in-the-head hoppy bitterness.  Still a little on the bitter side for my liking but drinkable.
The food - pretty average for the price.  If you're in the neighbourhood and don't have any better ideas, then this place is fine.

    Dislikes:
Service.  I sit at the bar, right in plain view of the bartenders.  They see me.  I see them.  The whole time.  It's not all that busy.  Still, service is really really slow.  It's almost like they're ignoring me on purpose. Which is weird because when they do stoop to my level I usually end up spending more money.

Overall, this is one of those places that I would go to when we're all standing around trying to figure out where to go.  As in "well, there's always the 21st Amendment".  But only if it's really close, like on the same block we happen to be standing around on.

I'll admit, I feel bad with the A-OK review here.  I love breweries.  I especially love microbreweries.  I really, really love beer.  Why wasn't this place so great?

We figured it would be ridiculously packed before the Giants game, so we arrived 90 minutes early and the place was still annoyingly busy.  It took a few to get seated and then our server was sketchy.

The beer was good... and that was about it.  I guess that's all a microbrewery needs to do well, but still.  The food was subpar and kind of pricey.  Again, the service was annoyingly slow.

The beer definitely made this place a good go-to for a few drinks, but nothing more.

I have really mixed feelings regarding this place.

The things I like:  most of the beers are passable, a few are really good.  Love the Watermelon Wheat -- it seems like it should be gross but it's actually perfect, especially on a warmer day; the upstairs seating (which generally has nicer/chiller staff) with its own separate bar; the large windows that open out into the alley and keep the place feeling breezy and bright through the afternoon.  I wish their beers didn't taste so much better on tap than bottled, or I'd never go here at all.

There are far more things I dislike than like:  bland, overpriced food; the incredibly miserable dbag crowd that fills the place after work and before/during Giants games; the evening seating policy (you cannot have a table - no matter the size of your party - unless you're eating - even when they're not busy!); and the way the staff avoids you if you're not dressed in business casual or better.  Actually, overall the attitude of this place is that if you don't look like you have money, they'd rather you didn't come there at all. A pretty silly attitude to have in SF; my tech company eventually took our no-limit corporate cards to friendlier bars.

This is a San Francisco gem.  Brew local!  Drink local!  Support local!

Some absolutely great beer made by these folks.  Fresh, on-tap in a cute neighborhood.  And there's good bar food if you are into that sort of thing.

Most of their beers err on the side of 'softer,' with lower alcohol contents than other microbreweries.  But that also allows for some of the best session beer on the West Coast.  I'm a sucker for Back In Black, a rich dark IPA (yes, an oxymoron, but not everyone has taken to the phrase 'Cascadian Dark Ale' yet).  Hop Crisis, a true IPA, is a kick-ass take-no-prisoners beer that is anything but a session beer -- rich body, crazy hops bitterness -- a bit of heaven in a can, when you find it in the stores.

Fireside Chat is a bit too prissy for my tastes, but I know dozens of beer snobs who would drink this by the gallon, given the chance.  Which leads me to another important facet of 21st Amendment:  'something for everyone.'  Yes, this brewery has something to offer any serious beer drinker.

My personal faves right now are Allies Win The War and Monk's Blood.  Rich beers, to say the least.  The week Allies hit the bars, it was such a success, it sold out almost immediately ... and that includes Zeitgeist AND City Beer Store.

Kudos to all the beer makers and beer staff at 21st Amendment.  You make all of us proud to be San Franciscans.  Your creativity is refreshing!

I want to love this place because I really like the beer, but seriously, they should just stop serving food.

I came here on New Year's Day for Sunday brunch with a party of 6 people. The food took forever to come out. It took about 40 min from the time we ordered our food to actually get it. The people who sat down after us were almost finished with their food by the time we got our order. I understand 6 people is a lot of mouths to feed, but the party isn't THAT big.

Apparently they WILL NOT serve the food that is ready to be served until the WHOLE ticket is done. My potatoes and bacon were cold. They also left my friend's Belgium Waffle on the counter for about 20 min. Who makes the easiest thing first leaves it sitting on the counter with the whip cream on top. We asked the waiter if we can have the waffle first since the warm waffle was melting the whip cream and making the waffle soggy, but he didn't let us have it since the other items were not finished cooking. I just don't understand why he couldn't just give the waffle to us. So, we just watched the whip cream melt for 20 min until he served us the soggy cold waffle.

They also forgot my other friend's huevo ranchero, so they had to make it when we  got our food. My friend got his food practically after everyone else was done. They were nice enough to comp his meal, but still, I think that is expected.

Honestly, they should make this place just a pub. I think they would do better without the food since it is mediocre anyways.

Decent bar and brewery. Kind of expensive, a little crowded. Definitely not the best food option in walking distance.

Had a belgian, baby horse, which was sweet, malty, lacking a little depth but delicious.

Also had some gumbo containing squid, mussel, and sausage. I suspect it is a way to dump the end of their stock, but it wasn't bad. Quite fishy, has a light roux and maybe file, but no okra.

Everything you want in a brewery restaurant: great beer, great food, friendly service and a lively atmosphere. I've been here several times and never had a bad experience. Try the upstairs for an intimate sports bar feel, or the downstairs for the SoMa restaurant feel. Either way, you'll have a great time.

A good place to grab a beer with a friend, but the food is not that good.  They've completely changed the way they make their onion rings, which was a big draw for me after the beer.  I usually don't drink dark beer, but I like the Fireside Chat.

Recently stopped in again for beers and a quick bite. Really enjoyed their Allies Win the War brew.

Wasn't terribly hungry, so just went the apps and 'zerts route (shout out to Tommy Haverford).

The fried cheese curds were everything that batter-fried cheese should be (crispy, melty, season-y). Paired very well with a kind of sweet marinara sauce.

For dessert, went with the pear and dried cherry crisp, topped with vanilla ice cream. Warm crisp with cold ice cream. Yum. Yum, sir.

All-around awesome, 21st Amendment. I'm hoping to make this a regular thing.

Took a break house hunting in SOMA with the boyfriend to grab lunch with friends. Great, refreshing stop! We had been here before and weren't impressed, but after today I can say we will definitely be back. The service from the hostess to the server to the busser was great. Plus we asked tons of questions and our meals with many mods came out perfectly. Sad the watermelon beer isn't on tap until the summer, but that just means we get to come back!

This was recommended for a friend's birthday celebration. Not a bad choice.

Setting: San Francisco, in general, is a hard place to navigate if you have to drive. There are one way streets, aggressive drivers, and few parking spots. With that being said, we apparently came at the right time - ample parking, no lines, empty spots at the bar. This restaurant is basically a bar/restaurant although it feels much more like a restaurant. None of that grungy dirty feel of a typical bar (smelly, sticky, etc.) although plenty of beers on tap.

Service: Definitely not a strength. Given that there was low traffic, imagine what it would be like after a game or during a tailgating session. Even though there were empty spots at the bar, I still waited about 10 minutes before anyone even acknowledged that I was standing there. What does a guy have to do to get a beer? Actually 2 beers. I can envision this place packed after SF Giants games. However, we only waited about 15 minutes for a table for 6. But, the "good service" ended there. We had to constantly wave down our waitress to get our orders placed, drinks refilled, new beers ordered, etc. Like I said, not something to brag about.

Food: Maybe we were hungry. Maybe it was the beer. Probably because we were hungry. The hamburger was pretty good, surprising given that this was nothing special. I love hamburgers and was excited to try one here. I ordered the regular burger with pepper-jack cheese, bacon, and sliced raw jalapenos.
    1. I could NOT taste the pepper jack cheese
    2. I COULD taste the bacon. They did not skimp. It might have been slightly overcooked as it was dry as a cracker.
    3. Never order raw jalapenos on your burger. Make sure they're cooked because the heat extracts some of the flavor. I felt as if I were biting into a radish. With that being said, I am a fan of texture in my meals and this provided it. Offsets the lack of flavor.

Drinks: Had the IPA. Forgot the name but it had a Z in there somewhere. My friend had an "Allies win the war" which had a good amount of alcohol in it. Tasty, dark, rick. A must for anyone visiting the restaurant.

Recommendation: If you like beer, definitely a YES. If not, there are other SF restaurants.

This place is NEVER quiet and always jumping with activity.  It doesn't matter if it's a Monday night or a Saturday night, you're going to have to wait for a table at joint 8 out of 10 times, which is testament to the following:

    - Great Beer,
    - Superb Service
    - Delicious Food

I split a Reuben with my man and it was mouthwateringly good and the salad wedge we had on the side was equally scrumptious.  I was surprised at how good the food is because the beers were so wonderful.  Typically you find bars either do an adequate to poor job with food, but not 21st Amendment!

I've taken couple friends here and each time their standards did not fail!

I have been back to 21st Amendment a couple of times for lunch since my first visit.

I had the Patty melt with salad on one visit. It was really good, and a good portion size. I also had a bite of my friends fish and chips. The fish was cod that was beer battered, it was delicious. Even though it was deep fried it still tasted light.

On my most recent visit I had a cup of their Chili and a half house salad.

The chili was amazing, it was super flavorful and was topped with cheese, red onions, a cilantro sour cream (it was so delicious) and fresh cilantro.

I also tried their seasonal Fire Side Chat beer on tap. (I had tried it in a can previously) It comes out a super dark black color, but it tastes like an amber ale.

I am in love with 21st Amendment's beer and their food is also pretty killer, I highly recommend that anyone who loves beer and good food check this place out!

As much as I love breweries, I am sort of ashamed to say I accidently stumbled on 21st Amendment on the way to a game.  (In my defense, I did know this brewery existed, but I didn't realize it was on the path between my hotel and my football game.)

All the beers in the sampler were really good, but I have to say the highlights were the Conventioneer, the An Cat Dubh, and the Fireside Chat.  Conventioneer was nice and malty, I could drink a lot of it on a warm summer day (or a warm winter day as it were), the An Cat Dubh was tasty and carmel-y, and the Fireside Chat was lightly spicey and flavorful.

Note on the food:  I wasn't that hungry so husband and I shared a salad and the rib appetizer.  The ribs were AMAZING!  and the salad was very large (and cheap), light and fresh - very unexpected.

    Food = 3 / 5 stars.
    Beer = 5 / 5 stars.
Their home-brew 21st Amendment beers are great. They are an above average California craft brewery.

    ***Bad***
Nothing really; the food and venue are just not super amazing, but its definitely worth coming back to again and again.

21st Amendment is a small location in the SOMA. They can get packed quickly on game days and with the usual flow of after work drinkers.

Allies Win the War - Dark red in color that has the usual nice bitter taste of a typical IPA.

Watermelon Wheat - This is the main attraction when they have it in season. On tap, they serve a nice pint with a wedge of watermelon that just worked oh so well.

Generally, their food is decent at a higher price.
I tried their burger (medium rare) with blue cheese and bacon, and a side of their chips. Burger tasted a-bit dry but was complemented well with the added blue cheese and bacon albeit the additional prices. Their homemade chips were tasteless and only acted as a crispy item to munch on while I drank my beer. The salad's vinaigrette was sparse but overall was a nice finish to a greasy meal.

I tried my friend's Jerk Chicken wings and fried cheese curds, but they tasted like typical bar food.

Although the food was not outstanding, their brew selection is good, and the place is always lively. I'll be sure to swing by during summer time to catch watermelon wheat. I give this place a 3.5, but will round up to a 4 because I have fond memories of that Watermelon wheat.

    Love, love, love this place.
Not only is the beer SUPER tasty but the food isn't half bad either!
The watermelon wheat changed my mind about wheat beers.  I never really liked them, but when I walked in and saw there was a watermelon beer I had to try it.  What a beautiful beer it was! If only I could find it in Chicago.  Also - the Brew Free or Die IPA... yummmmmm.

The food was alright here.  The portions were decent.  My friends and I ordered the veggie sandwich, pulled pork sandwich, and the mussels.  The veggie sandwich was gross, dry, and lacked any kind of taste.  This was a very disappointing plate.  The pulled pork sandwich was good.  The pulled pork was marinated/seasoned well.  The mussels were good.  I really enjoyed them, however, I was annoyed that I didn't get a separate bowl to place my emptied shells.  So, I had to creatively place the emptied shells around my place, which I thought was just wrong.  I also had their fries and they were soggy...

Our server seemed like she was high or drunk.  She just seemed woozy.  She didn't know the specials of the day, she literally read it off her cheat sheet or something.  The beer selection was disappointing...  I also asked our server about the beers they had and she just seemed unsure about everything.

I wouldn't come back here on my own...  just not worth it to me.

Great beer, great food. I am always pleased. Went to Strong Beer Month last year and it was lovely. Can't wait for it this year!

For a Wed night place it had great service, was packed, and great for groups.

My group ordered some beers and fries in the upstairs area and it was a great little hang out spot.

    Highly recommended.

One of my favorite breweries. Only second to Lagunitas. Food is ok. Beer is great.

This review is 1 of over 1000 but I think it is worth reading but I may be biased. This review is specifically for the pregame offerings 21st has. I think the use of the beer garden is perfect for a pregame meeting with friends. They have quality beers that everyone can enjoy. It is hard to beat their Watermelon Wheat on a hot afternoon.

The place always looks packed especially on game days but it is worth running in there even if it is only for one drink. Their prices crush the prices in AT&T and are definitely better quality!

Great beers, albeit a bit pricey. Super-crowded at dinner time (especially Friday and Saturday), and the food is good, but not amazing (there are a number of places that you can get better pub food in SOMA). But, yeah, come here for the beers. There's always a good rotating selection of local brews, plus some fixed house beers. There's also hard liquor at the bar, but I have no idea why you would go to 21st Amendment and not drink beer.

I've never had any trouble with the service, although I've heard horror stories about getting attention at the bar; I guess I'm just good at inserting myself in folks' field of view.

Rude staff.  Mediocre food. Out of featured beer.
I would not recommend this establishment.   There are many restaurants that are much better.

Food is great. Meatload sliders are amazing. A great beer selection though sometimes I feel like they're missing some solid middle of the road beers everything's kind of off the wall.

Environment is nice but it's kind of isolated out there if you're trying to go bar hopping. There are a few places in the area and if you're prepared to walk a bit it's fine.

Service is snobbish and sucky however. Also gets very crowded

Gimme a pint of Double IPA and I'm a happy gal.
Gimme a pint of 21st Amendment Double IPA and I'm ecstatic.

This place has a solid menu with great beer "pairings". I wish that the portion sizes matched the cost...and that there were more specials for those who are choosing to have a sit-down meal.

I didn't feel like the food wowed me enough to want to come back for it...but the beer is another story - I will be coming back for the beer - often.
