LOVE this lil alley way spot. You'd miss it if they didn't drag the sanwhichboard sign out to the sidewalk, "21 Grand".
I've only been there 2-3 times, but loved each time.
The first experiences were via the Oakland Art Murmur crawl - I saw a crazy interpretive musical art show here a few months back - each musician was given a tarot card from which to gain inspiration to play - with about 10 musicians in the room, the sounds was insane.
More recently I checked out the Industrial Jazz Group there, which was like watching a high-talent low-brow freakshow circus high school musical kindergarten play with swear words, and a song called "I'm in love with your mother". They even got an 11 year old kid, Josh, to scream "Fuck the Muck!" into the microphone with his parents grinning uncomfortably on. More on the IJG: http://www.uglyrug.com/
5 stars for sound and cheap covers, very friendly management, and overall sweet ambiance. They also have a great news/events board, and all kinds of random publications and free magazines and chat books of tripped-out poets.

Laid back performance space in downtown Oakland. They schedule a lot of cool stuff.
Interesting features: the god's gym graphic next door is hilarious; the connected accordion / accordion supply store. -

21 Grand always has great shows, their current kinetic sculpture one [Feb. 08] featuring Sudhu Tewari and Michael Schippling is my favorite to date. Bring the kids, most of the pieces are all-ages delightful.
Though watch out for the keyhole box. -

Went here to see the beloved brother-in-law, AMK, do his excellent "noise" thing.
Nice "space".
Good "artschool" vibe.
Has a kind of "random" feel to it.
Like some thing "new" is about to happen.
Sometimes it "does".
Yep. -

There are just no genuinely weird performances spaces like this in the 415. You gotta head to the 510 to see the truly freaky shit. One of the fifty or so reasons why Oakland rolls harder than all y'all SF bitches. This and the gangs. I went to high school not far from this location and we used to REGULARLY have dead hookers in our parking lot. Match that, Lick-Wilmerding!!!

I wouldn't say that all things 21 grand are good for kids necessarily... I once saw a pregnant lady just straight up walk out of this place. I'm pretty sure she was attempting to prevent severe brain damage to her unborn child... This is a perfect place to just have some fun!

ya know how sometimes you just wanna talk openly about how noise muzik hurts your head, is not music, and scars you emotionally? well this is not the place.
everything else about it rules, including but not limited to: the bulletin board, the setup, kind people, and drinking. i do like drinking. -

Small gallery space that is neither on 21st nor Grand. Some girl that chatted me up while I was eating my dinner at Pearl (http://www.yelp.com/bi...) suggested I check out her friend's band there later that night as it would be their "last show EVAR". Um, ok.
I roll by. Small crowd outside. Ample parking in an empty lot across the street, so I parked and went in. Something was going on inside, and it. was. loud. I paid the requested donation of $5 at the door and move into the main, and only, room.
The gallery/performance space is basically the size of a studio apartment stripped of furniture and carpeting. Concrete floor, white walls. Fine by me. Chairs were placed off to the side for people to pass out in. There was a merch table giving away FREE shirts and pins, probably because it was the band's "last show EVAR!". 21 Grand was also running an "adult beverage" table and slanging vice for $2 a pop. Don't like Tecate, Red Tail, or whatever cheap-o wine they felt like that day? Not a problem. BYOB is not frowned upon here, as evidenced by all the people stumbling about with 40's of Mickey's and OE. 21 Grand is located near Koreana (http://www.yelp.com/bi...) which is open late as well, so beer/soju runs are not a problem. The alleyway next to 21 Grand serves as the smoking patio, and in between acts it's packed to the brim. And the music? It was LOUND. Angry, angry, and LOUD. Straight up "my friend's band is playing at this house party tonight" vibe going on at "the Grand".
So, skinny people in skinnies and hoodies, their lankiness stumbling about as they try to keep rhythm to the rhythmically challenged loudness being pounded out a mere 10 feet from them, while trying desperately not to spill any of the precious elixir of life that is cheap malt liquor. The second I walked into this joint and surveyed the scene, I heard the voice of my teens in my head, "Peezy, this some crazy white people shit...". Yes. it. is.
It's also a helluva lot of fun. -

this is a good spot for noise bands & weird art shows & there's always a nice, or at least interesting, crowd and um, it's cheap. usually.

this place is very cool, usually have interesting art and performances here regularly. however, sometimes "self-obsessed amateur crap" is interpreted as "experimental" and you end up watching someone on the floor rolling pebbles around with a contact mic or something while everyone else hears your stomach growl. i really hate walking in on stuff like that. or maybe i just hate really quiet music in general. BYOB. sarah and darren are both really friendly and they book a lot of different kinds of music here so you are bound to see something good. the god's gym graphic next door is also a highlight. then you can actually WALK somewhere like down the street to mama buzz or perhaps stork club.
